We were on a road trip on 10/21 and this seemed like a good place for a late Saturday breakfast. Had about a 10 minute wait for a table which wasn't bad at all. Waitress was very pleasant, if a bit quirky. Started off with coffees which were extremely bitter, way too much for my liking. We both ordered eggs over hard with home fries and bacon, along with cinnamon buns. Main entrees were served quickly and were on point. Good home fries! Always a sticking point for me, I like mine to have some seasoning. These were great! Cinnamon buns were huge, hot and delicious. We'd definitely return. Much like other reviews, I was disappointed. I know they are still new but it's a diner and they don't serve breakfast all day? Which is literally half of their 1 page 2 sided menu! And like others have said, their drinks are weird knock off brands. Our server was so quiet I couldn't hear anything she said over the rest of the noise, so there was a lot of awkward moments - just speak up lady! To start off I got some hot chocolate (my boyfriend got their knock off rootbeer). Their homemade marshmallow is good, but huge. The hot chocolate itself was meh at best, definitely made with water. My boyfriend WAS planning on getting breakfast but nobody informed us until we were in the process of ordering that they stop breakfast at 2. Okay, so he changed his order to the Chicken Platter (or whatever it was called). I got a Bacon Cheeseburger (which I needed to add on both bacon and cheese because they only offer regular hamburger?). They don't offer provolone OR american cheese for the burger, they only had mozzarella, swiss, and maybe one other thing. Which I thought was weird but okay. Pretty sure my burger was supposed to come with lettuce tomato onion and pickle but my onion was nowhere to be found. My burger also came with fries that are easily topped by fast food joints. Now onto my boyfriends chicken platter, which I almost got myself but we wanted to try a mix of things on their menu. Simply put? GROSS. I love chicken, I get chicken almost everywhere I go, chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, chicken patties, I love it all - but not this! The mac and cheese was okay, and the biscuit tasted like corn bread? She didn't even bring over butter with it - which by the way once we got was cold. Not normal butter cold, like so cold it couldn't be spread cold. And because the biscuit itself was cold, it just tore up the bread. When we were done we had thrown napkins and other trash on top of the food but the server still put it in a to-go box for us?? Kinda gross. Alright... let's move onto dessert! Brought over a very small list of possible things to order, which had just as small a list for a kids menu on the other side. Boyfriend ordered the apple pie, and myself the banana split. About 5 minutes later our server comes over to let us know that they haven't got any apple pie only pecan. He switched it to cheesecake. He seemed to love the cheesecake, and my banana split was good. All in all, we spent $41 for two drinks, two meals, and two desserts. I might go here again to give the breakfast a try -when they're actually serving it!- but otherwise I don't plan on stopping again. read more

We were in Hadley from Florida and stopped in to Johnny's Roadside Diner for a meal to start off the day. The service as soon as we entered the diner was excellent. We were sat at a table in less than 2 minutes and then we were greeted by our server, Nate, within a minute. Nate was courteous and professional and very attentive. We ordered and received our food very quickly, and my wife and I were both very pleased with our meals. I had the steak and eggs and a "small" side of biscuits and gravy. All my food was awesome and the "side order" of biscuits and gravy was huge and enough for a meal itself. My wife had the complete breakfast with pancakes and she also loved every bit of it. I would recommend this place without a doubt; and, ask for Nate and you won't be disappointed. Nate made the great food and environment even better by providing us with superb service. This place has some potential. We understand this is a new restaurant but there is a lot of work to be done. 1. The portions are small. I left hungry after having a meatloaf dinner. Also, the nachos had about 10 chips. Every other restaurant that serves nachos gives you a mountain of chips. 2. The soda is off brand as mentioned. Why not serve the sodas everyone knows and loves? 3. Food came out wrong. Asked for no mayo, not hard to comprehend. 4. Service was extremely and unreasonably slow. The waitress never apologized. Silverware wasn't ready and on table. Spare napkins were not available. Also, when splitting the check the waitress was careless and gave identical checks. 5. Pro: hot sauce is amazing. Please bottle that. 6. Food in general is very average. Why isn't there white bread - that's so basic. Also, no American cheese to be found. It costs extra to get cheese on a burger. Meatloaf was not as expected. It was so over seasoned it hurt to eat. I was expected a classic comfort food but they were trying too hard to make it unique. Again, I ate the entire plate but left hungry. Burger was still good. Omelette was ordered too. Staff was not educated on the options available. It was very expensive for an omelette just to add 1-2 things. Staff also did not know anything about baked goods. They guessed when I asked. I hope the diner really takes reviews seriously. I was there the night they opened! A little hectic - but that's to be expected. One couple ahead of us left - they were expecting the large menu the old Route 9 had - this is NEW! Lots of changes and lots of paring back. Lots of renovations to the interior; that tack-o bar that was added to the front counter is gone - new floors and new rugs. (What would Chef Robert says about rugs in the dining area? LOL!) We ordered our old diner stand-bys - meatloaf for my friend and a Reuben for me. My friend found the meatloaf with mashed (real) potatoes tasty but felt the side of spinach was a tad small ...could have used a few more leaves in the portion. I thought my Reuben was excellent! The meat was sliced thinly and was not fatty or gristle-y, the sauerkraut and dressing were great, too! An excellent sandwich! We decided to split a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream - the whipped cream was sooooo thick and rich - never gonna get that out of a can, folks! Yes - some of the waitstaff seemed a little confused and there was a slight wait time - but this is opening night, diners! Give the cook & waitstaff a break! No One in the dining room was starving to death! Our only dissatisfaction was the Men's Room; with all of the great lamps and sconces in the dining room, new menu, new rugs, etc .... the Men's room looks like no one thought about it during the reconstruction; same old floor, fixtures - same old mirror with people's initials scratched into it ... a little facelift in there wouldn't hurt...even if only to have replaced the mirror. read more

It's really exciting to see this location back in business. The Route 9 diner was a staple of the 5 college area, and was often frequented by grandparents and inebriated students alike. It was open 24 hours and there was always something to order off the expansive menu. The diner closed in early 2015 after allegations of sexual harassment of staff members came to light and the owners attracted the attention of the Attorney General. Local restaurateur Andy Yee (of Johnny's Tavern fame) bought the location and did extensive renovations. The new diner just opened in November of 2015. A friend and I, long late night denizens of the old Route 9, decided to check the new place out. The most notable change is that the hours and the size of the menu have been significantly reduced. While the old route 9 had pages and pages of different choices, Johnny's Roadside Diner focuses on a pared down menu of nostalgic diner classics made from scratch. My friend got a boozy shake that took a little while to come out, and was more like boozy coffee cream by the time it arrived at the table. The lemonade, I felt, was a little over-sweetened. We got the poutine to start - the fries could've used a little more time in the fryer, but the gravy was very savory and obviously did not come out of a packet. For dinner, I got a scrumptious french dip. A very simple classic on a kaiser roll, the cheese was perfectly melted, the beef sliced thinly, and the jus had an incredible depth of flavor. The side salads looked great - amply sized, house-made dressings - but the greens in mine weren't very well washed and tasted like they were probably better yesterday. My friend got the Roadhouse burger, which had raw onions, a poached egg, and cheddar cheese. He was skeptical about the idea of an egg on a burger, but by the end of the meal he decided it was fantastic, and said it surpassed the burgers over at Local in Northampton. Their dessert special was funfetti cake, which I had to try because hey, we're all secretly 4 inside. The buttercream was awesome. The rest of their desserts are house made and look exceptional. This place has only been open a couple of weeks, and, in some ways, it showed. It was packed and the waitstaff kept bumping into each other and forgetting things (my friend's milkshake, the fork for my cake, asked for a container of jus to go home with my sandwich and still went home jus-less, etc). They have a great menu, awesome location, and everyone I saw was enjoying their meal. In a few months I'm sure they'll be running a tight ship. Don't know whether to be glad they're not as crowded as they deserve to be, or be worried that Amherst can't support solid restaurants. Review a place on basis of what it wants to be: Johnny's Roadside Diner is perfect for its aspirations - true to diner experience and design, with food that rises to "cuisine" without getting haughty or hipster. The diner menu is pared down to a still-rich variety of essential diner faves, forgoing pages 6-8 in favor of really well-made dishes, with just-right touches of flair and fun. And the pare-down process stops before becoming a limited fried-food "Johnny Rockets" playground-food joint - though they got your onion rings, baby! Music always good. Decor surprising in good-judgment, again hitting that perfect midpoint. Doesn't feel like token-nostalgia, and still they nailed it. Wait staff is super!!! Always. Always. So, peeps, go there. Eat good food. Enjoy the ride. Keep them in business. I promise not to whine about the crowds when y'all come to your senses ;-)! read more

I'm giving it 5 stars for potential. ( So much for the 5 stars)! My husband and I went for dinner tonight. The service was superb. My husband loved his meatloaf dinner, with fresh cooked squash and yummy whipped potatoes. I had a BLT and would have loved it on white bread - I just don't like sour dough bread. What really made us love it , as mentioned above, was the service. Can't wait to go back for breakfast - but without the sour dough bread (how about running into Stop and Shop and buying nice fluffy white bread? Sour Dough Bread tastes funny! For those complaining about no all day breakfast, there will be all day breakfast but they're still figuring out the process! read more

Johnny's Roadside Diner is doing pretty well. Their food quality is better than expected and service is very friendly and attentive. A few things that need improvement: their juice is not real, it comes from a soda gun, and they are using creamers and pre packaged butter pads. It's the little things that make a difference - getting higher quality staples is essential to attract the customers they are reaching out to with their stylish and delicious menu. Ive had both breakfast and dinner here. Breakfast is suburb! The waffle was lovely and fluffy. My salad at dinner was not as fresh as it could've been, so hopefully that can improve. Overall, pretty good so far. They will be more likely to see me during breakfast hours. read more

We decided to give this place a try, since it's now under new ownership. The experience was not as positive as we had hoped for. The menu has drastically changed and is now mostly filled with breakfast items. The rest of the menu is a few burgers, sandwiches and a few salads. The service was mediocre as our server never came back to check on us after our food was delivered. It seems they have too many people in the process, as our order was taken by one person, delivered by another and refills of beverages by yet another. When we told the person delivering our food about a missing order of onion rings, she seemed to have cared less. It wasn't until the check came, when our server asked if we had received them. The burger patties definitely are of the frozen variety and had a stale flavor. The lettuce served with the burger was the white portion of the iceberg, that should never be served. After paying our check, our sever gave us a dollar as opposed to the .53 cents owed to us. Not sure if there is no change in their registers, or what, but that's also concerning. Overall, we were very disappointed and hope that there is more attention to the quality of service and the quality of food for improvement. read more

This place has really gone downhill in the last 3 months. Service has become much slower and they are much cheaper with the proportions of food that they give you. For example if you order a side of bacon they now only give you two slices instead of three. But they don't charge you any less. My family still seems to like to go here for some reason. I'm not sure why but I will not go back unless it's because of them. read more

We ordered the pancakes, which were decent, the Irish Benedict which was a confusing mumble jumble of cold hollandaise sauce, generic corned beef and an overwhelming biscuit which overwhelmed all the flavours and the potato, egg, and bacon which again was generic. Great service but as far as diner food goes, I'm not impressed. Pretty bad pancakes (well cooked but the pancake mix they use sucks) and the "home fries" were just HUGE wedged chunks of potatoes, not the beautiful crispy little potato slices that every single other diner uses. On the other hand, my sister enjoyed her waffle and her egg sandwich. The wedge French fries they used for her meal were the same thing they gave me as "home fries." I feel that calling this place a diner is a misnomer. They do no serve breakfast all day long. The menu is two pages long and quite narrow and selective. Having said that, if you are looking for a nice restaurant where diner for two is around $50 for an appetizer and two main dishes. This is the place. The food was really good. I've come here twice, both for breakfast. The first time was with afriends and it was okay- we were seated quickly, fool order took a bit longer than I'm used to for a dinner, but the meal was good (I had an omelette that featured salmon) and the home fries were seasoned to my taste. House coffee seems to be a dark roast from Rao's. Our server forgot about my bacon, but I asked about it and it was brought out. Came here a second time, this time with my parents, who were visiting. The server brought out an egg salad sandwich instead of tuna, which my mother had ordered. When we mention this, the server insists that my mother had said egg (definitely not the case). Mom settles for the egg sandwich, so as not to cause a fuss. My home fries are forgotten, and I have to remind the server again about my side. The waffle I order tastes fine and is standard waffle size. Not exactly overwhelming in either quantity or flavor. My dad's chocolate chip pancakes look a bit pasty, and he mentioned not being too keen on the taste. Overall, the food here is fine. It's priced at IHOP levels, I guess, with servings on the smaller side of diner standard. The flavors are fine- again, not really hitting either the "wow" factor of hip-bougie-gourmet or the heartiness of standard greasy-delicious diner/Waffle House fare. The hosts were friendly enough, but I really don't understand how the servers I've had keep forgetting bits of our orders/bringing out the wrong thing. Johnny's definitely has room to improve in that regard. I'll be looking for somewhere else to find good breakfast food. read more

This diner is great, and the food is good classic diner food. However, the home fries used to be big wedged roasted yummy potatoes, and now I am disappointed to report they have switched to small, tiny, crumb-like pieces of potato (I might have gotten a batch with smaller pieces by chance) but I miss the old home fries and I hope they switch back or it's just a matter of I visit the diner later in the morning! I'm happy to write this review today, especially in response to negative or apathetic comments I've read recently about this place. Yes: it is, in some ways, a traditional diner -- but in some ways, they are so much more. Yes: when you order eggs, toast, and home fries, that's what you're going to get, and by nature, that meal is not going to change your life. But all of them were exceptional at Johnny's, on my first trip there this past weekend. I had read in 2015 that the executive chef of Johnny's was going to be someone with excellent culinary training, which was a fun concept; cut to today, when I guess the chef is someone else; I was admittedly a little skeptical, but man did my wife and I have a great meal. I'll also say this: we love great food; we seek it out, read about it, all that. But we are also happy to keep it simple, and appreciate the basics done well, no matter what the environment. Maybe this is best as bullet points: - They have beer, wine, and custom mixed drinks. My wife and I both ordered Guinness, and it came in a can, so we can open it at our table, which is the right way to do it! - My wife's scrambled eggs were perfect. Not dry pieces of rubble and not runny at all; smooth, flavorful, perfect. Meanwhile, the home fries had crispy edges. The perfect marriage! - My breakfast burrito had guacamole with cilantro on top of it. What diner has cilantro? - They're open for 7 a.m. until 9 or 10 p.m. depending on the night. This is perfect for a trip to Hadley for errands or a movie. Typically we'll wait until Noon or so and go to the Hangar, or Chili's. See ya never, Chili's!! - Ample parking outside, ample and comfortable seating inside. They had a number of booths for two people; we sat in one. So nice. They also have a diner-style counter in the front for quick and easy seating. - Super friendly service. I wish I caught our server's name. She was excellent. - I asked for hot sauce; our server asked me, "Frank's, Tabasco, or Sriracha?" Come on! What diner has those options? Love it. - Immaculate bathrooms. What else can I say? I typically try to have one meal at a diner when I am traveling in the Northeast. This place looked cool both inside and out, but the experience was underwhelming. Place was freezing and it took complaints by 3 tables before they turned the AC down. I had the Roadside Burger and it seemed more like a fast food burger than a diner. Patty was bland and didn't seem fresh. Fries were good. Service was decent, but very rushed. I finished 50 Minutes before closing and felt like the server was rushing me and several other tables. It was hard to rate this place because it was a spotless diner with a great atmosphere. The food was delicious - that aspect was great. The front of house staff was terrible. The server at our table was disorganized and walked by us a half dozen times without asking if we wanted more coffee or needed anything. They dropped the food and left without checking back and their tables don't have jelly etc. while we were there they sat these very large people at this tiny little table - and it felt like they were understaffed by at least two servers. So. The food was great but the service definitely left something to be desired. Went here on a trip out of state and absolutely loved it. The inside looked really nice. It was like your typical diner feel but more updated. Prices weren't bad and they gave pretty large portions. I had a BLT sandwich, my boyfriend got the Glazed Ham entree, and we split their Mac n Cheese between the two of us. The Mac N Cheese was much bigger than we expected and could have served as a meal. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and very courteous the entire meal. Our meals also came out much sooner than we expected. The only complaint I have is that I wish they had either raspberry or sweet tea like most restaurants do. read more

Went for an early dinner on a Monday night, so the place was mostly empty an service was attentive and friendly. Our server was very helpful in addressing our questions, including consulting the kitchen when he wasn't sure. I had the fish sandwich, which contained a nicely sized, and well fried piece of fish on a toasted bulkie. Other orders at my table included a bowl of clam chowder, which was pronounced good, and a Cobb salad, which was huge, with a generous serving of shredded turkey, a waffle with local syrup, and a stack of fluffy pancakes with strawberry sauce. The menu has been changed since their opening last year, and contains much more traditional fare - it still isn't the huge multi page affair of a NY diner, but everything we had was generous and well executed. read more

One of my favorite places to go for a yummy breakfast. The prices are reasonable and the oldies diner feel makes the experience that much greater! The wait for food is a little long, but it's worth it when you leave stuffed. My favorite is their buttermilk pancakes with whipped cream. Incredibly fluffy and melts right in your mouth. Perfect for a Sunday morning brunch out. They also serve breakfast all day which is awesome! I haven't tried a milkshake yet, but all of my friends say they're super yummy. read more

I always wanted to try this one as I have been to other restaurants in the same group-- today was the day. Well, it is diner like building in the middle of a parking lot and it is an island; whatever its location lacks for calmness the product inside the building is fine. Most surprising was the portion size for I never expected it to be that large. Both of us went with omelettes and I knew we had a good experience because they both disappeared with nary a word said. The hash browns were good and I thought our upgrade of a bagel was ok. The bagel seemed process but the grilling was perfect. Price point was wonderful. The person who took our order was cheerful and should be lauded. Overall, it is a diner and it was fast and efficient. The portion size was generous, The number of mushrooms was ridiculous and loved the cheese. Need to come back when I need brunch food once again--- definitely will return hungry and expecting great portion size and a satisfying experience. read more
