My husband and I have been going to John's Bar in Canton for almost 40 yrs.. We loved it. Great food, great atmosphere, great service...no complaints! After they moved to Oakwood Square, of course, we tried it, it was one of our favorite spots. We were dying to be able to go back again, so we did. We wanted to give them a little time to get set up and to get some reliable help during this time of covid. We went the first time around the end of January. The service was horrible, which we could have expected, but to our surprise, not only was the menu cut in half (at least) but we were told that there were NO sandwiches at all, just burgers and NO wings. So we put it down to bad planning on the owner's part, except they should have expected this being in business as long as they had been. So we went back last night (3/5/22). Things went downhill, I'm sorry to say...not up. The menu was just as small. There were STILL too many things they were out of (bad planning again). Our server was slow. Slow-moving, slow ordering, slow putting in our order. We thought at first that he forgot to put in our order...UNTIL, we saw a table with a girl who was still working there with a boy who might have worked there get one dish after another being delivered to their table while ours and some others who were still waiting on their food, CONTINUED to wait while other girls who were still working and waiting tables come to that table and pick up their orders and take them back to the room next to the kitchen exit, while others didn't bother to take it back somewhere else and just sat at that table to eat what was either part of the boy's food or food they ordered for themselves. While a fourth girl sat at the table and continued to vape on a pen (we couldn't tell what she was vaping, we just saw huge puffs of vapor coming out of the pen she was very poorly trying to hide). At this point, we were FINALLY served our food and were not only sickened by the vaping, the loud talking and yelling at this table, the fact is, they were sweeping around our feet, all around our food dust and other crap was billowing up off the floor and onto our plates. Truly, I couldn't eat another bite. The truth of the matter is, you can skimp on the food, you can skimp on the service, you can raise the prices, but you can't do all three and expect to servive very long. There was another person who wrote about the acoustics being too loud to hold a conversation, back on 1/12/22. As of 3/5/22, nothing has been done. It is STILL horribly loud! My husband still gave a 20% tip, because he believes you can't hold problems with management to be held against the staff, even though in this case, the problem was every bit as much the managements fault as it was the staffs...just super poor service all the way around. Our was service started off okay but it was like time being wasted. This place had a very lazy attitude about itself in the atmosphere was not good at all it was a real dull look in the dining room and kind of oldie 1970s and the food was prepared too fast and just like thrown at you. Maybe years ago this place prospered but now today I was not impressed but this just may be my opinion and someone else may have a good time there but I would not recommend it. read more

I can't believe all the good reviews for this place. I hadn't been for probably 15 yrs. because the food got do bad. Went for lunch and ordered a burger because someone told my hubby they were the best-Wrong! Bland, over cooked. The only thing good on the plate were the homemade chips. Another person at our table got a slider and it was even worse- looked like a burnt hockey puck w/ absolutely nothing on it. And so small the bun dwarfed it! I stopped in for Lunch. I know that John's is famous for their burgers but I thought I would try the lunch menu. It was extremely busy for lunch with a mostly older crowd. Since it was just me I sat at the bar and there was no wait for that. The bartender was friendly and polite and brought a menu over. The bar space that I had was a bit tight as the bar was nearly full as well. I ordered the chicken piccata. You get two sides and I think I may have chosen poorly. I ordered a salad and homefries. The salad came out first and was essentially the iceberg lettuce mix with carrots. They did however put a beet slice on it. Rather a meager salad altogether though. The piccata came out and looked good. The chicken was lightly breaded and was thin but looked delicious under the piccata sauce. The only presentation complaint is that they put the lemon wedges on before the piccata sauce so you're picking them off slathered in sauce. Once I tasted it however it was so incredibly salty that I almost winced. I couldn't believe how incredibly salty it was. I didn't expect that. The capers were probably salty enough on their own but I don't know maybe not having so many in the sauce would help. I don't recommend the piccata. Home fries were fine and the ambiance was also fine. All in all a decent experience. I will go back but I will try something different. read more

The night before we came here, my wife and I went to Bender's Tavern, a fine dining establishment. However, it was not our cup of tea. John's Bar & Grille is more toward our liking. Have been going there for years and the food has always been adequate to very good. They recently entered the fourth generation of ownership. Last week we were introduced to the " new" (confusin)g menu. Prior menus have contained more choices, probably too many. Perhaps that is why the menu was reduced? Our meals were noticeably poorer from others we've eaten there in the past. Based on this occasion it seems that quality is slipping. Hope this was just a bad day. read more

Taken here by my former landlord when I used to live in Canton. Good staple of the NW side of Canton and right near school. Their burgers are pretty good. Their drinks are heavy on alcohol. I never leave here empty. Definitely miss this place when I think of Canton. read more

This place is great. I am not local and was in town for business. All I wanted was a burger and a beer in a comfortable atmosphere. This place is totally full of locals. It is a no frills, comfortable bar/restaurant where you could bring your mom or your kid and it would be fine. It might not be the best "date" establishment, as it is not particularly romantic, but if you want some food and to watch sports or stare at your iPhone, this is ideal. it's been 15 years since I was at John's. I always loved the food. Well now its a bunch of food out of a box. I got the ribs for the Hall of Fame Football Special. They were Nasty! I'm a big guy and I love to eat, I ate 3 of them and passed on the rest. My wife who usually could care less about how something taste, couldn't stand them. She did get the signature steak, it wasn't bad, much better than the ribs but not worth the money. DO NOT order the Calamari, it is garbage. When you come to Canton for the Festival, stick to the "Strip" in North Canton, just better service and food. read more

If your looking for a casual atmosphere and great food you found your place. I actually almost always eat the same thing but my husband changes it up every time. I personally LOVE the grouper there so thats what I get. Hes had a bit of everything. The steaks, burgers, and paninis are all awesome. As far as pricing goes Id say it the middle of the road... lunch is anywhere from $5 to 8 and dinner 8 to 18. Drinks are really reasonable. Top shelf drinks even are only like $4.75. I keep coming back to John's because I like the atmosphere and had some great times there back in the seventies. I keep forgetting how predictably substandard so much of the food is. It is almost laughable how many standard, stock items: lasagna, Greek salad, etc can be botched to the point where most of it is left on the plate. Here's the thing, if you order a steak or a hamburger, fries, a cold beer, you will most likely enjoy yourself - they do that really well. It's true, the staff are generally friendly, and the service is usually pretty good. But salads, pasta, fish - buyer beware. read more

The staff always goes above and beyond every time we visit. They are also so knowledgeable about the items on the menu, and are ready to help you make your perfect selection. Last night I ordered the Saturday special of Crab Stuffed Scrod, and I could not believe how delicious it was! The fish was perfectly flaky and moist, and the crab was a terrific addition!! I ordered the sweet potato fries for one of my sides, I definitely suggest this combination! The fries had a slight sweetness that paired well with the seasoning of the fish and crab. My Fiancé ordered the black and blue burger, and lets just say he didn't talk at all once the food was put in front of him! He said it was the best burger he has had! the hamburgers and French fry and the standard on how to make the classic Americana meal. I would always get the burger and fry. its amazing sometimes good most times. however the problem isn't the food. for me its the bad servers. I feel like the servers are not as nice as they should be. the wait times are long and the prices are high. everytime I go I know the service is spotty. and it is. I will go once in a while its a shame I know before I even go the service is bad. I wish they would fix it with this review. I don't think they will. because of the good food bad service I wont go here to much. read more
