I have been eating at John's for years but now I have had two bad experiences with the breakfast. My omelette was watery and not cooked done. My hash browns were not cooked still hard. My breakfast was horrible. They bought us some more hash browns they weren't any better. I will not be eating there anymore. Just saying. I didn't want to give them one star rating read more

I don't eat at your Mom and Pop coney islands too much these days. I was doing business on this side of town last week and did wind up having breakfast here last week. I figured what the heck, why not give it a try? I had the Corned Beef Hash omelet while the wife had a Vegetarian Omelet. Both came with a side of hash browns and toast. My omelet was surprisingly decent, not fantastic, but it was solid. She said hers was okay, but not memorable. The omelets were both a pretty good size, especially for both being around $6 each. The hash browns were just okay. I have had better. They definitely needed seasoning, as in a lot of salt and pepper. I get that their clientele typically might not like too much seasoning, but these were kind of bland. Not good, not awful, but very bland. I had the Texas toast, while she ordered whole wheat toast. The toast was toast- what else can be said? Well, other than her toast was just average wheat toast and definitely not whole wheat, but that's okay. The coffee I had was terrible. It was typical diner coffee. It was not good. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it. It tasted cheap and bitter. Maybe it was just the pot, but I'm accustomed to drinking higher end coffee and this was just not good. If you are picky about your coffee, you might not like it and should opt for hot tea or cocoa rather than ordering their coffee. I really didn't like it. The service was fine and our waitress was very friendly, though she didn't check on us throughout the meal much. She seemed pretty busy and it looked like she might have been the only one waiting tables that morning. Despite that and the fact that many tables were being seated at the same moment, the food came out of the kitchen quickly. The menu was big, mostly American-style food, burgers, fish and chips, salads, club sandwiches, etc. The prices were distinctly on the cheaper end. To be honest, I haven't had a breakfast that inexpensive in ages. We walked out the door, after tip, for only $20. read more

There's always debate about who makes the best coney's. Someone wrote a book about it ("Coney Detroit") and MLive did a series of articles trying to find the best coney dog in Michigan. I am not lying when I tell you that John's has been making the BEST coneys since 1975! I should know, I've been enjoying them since the place first opened. AND I have had many other great coneys from all over the State to compare with. These are the best. What makes them so awesome? John's coneys have all the traditional ingredients of a Flint style coney (koegel's dog, steamed bun, meat sauce, mustard, onions). The dogs are cooked on the grill. I believe they use spanish onions and do not chop as fine as many other places. The real difference is in the sauce. My guess is there's a little extra cayenne pepper and/or paprika. It definitely has a red hue to it and just a little spicy bite that helps the sauce stick out vs. the stronger onions. If you are a coney aficionado, you need to give this place a try. Super friendly wait staff, fast service, good coffee, crispy fries. read more

I had two coneys.my daughter ordered the kids pancake..in the description it said two small cakes..she received two small Mickey's which was nice because I was disappointed when i read the description. So extra bonus there. Alright now I didn't like the coneys..i felt it tasted off. I'm not sure though maybe that's how it was supposed to taste? I like to try coneys at all the places I go to.this was my least favorite. That's not to say you wouldn't love it. read more

My wife and I stopped in to try it out as several friends have raved about the food. We both had fish and chips and water to drink. It took longer than I would have expected to get our order and it consisted of 3 5"x 1.5" pieces of fish and a ton of fries. The fish wasn't anything special flavor wise and just as I was going to comment about the fish to my wife, she asked me if I thought the fish was extremely oily. The food is good but you never know what to expect on a Discount. The owner will give a Sr or Vet discount the wife told me only if you spend 5 dollars the daughter says you have to spend 7 dollars then next time i go in she says they dont give a discount anymore. I was told by a few waitress that the daughter is always rude to customers she was me they said she runs a lot of them off. I go in there a lot not any more. Good coney dogs, precisely the way a Genesee County coney dog is supposed to be. Breakfast is always good and the waitresses are so nice and chatty. Feels like I'm eating at home but I don't have to cook the food. The pancakes and fried potatoes are the best I've had anywhere and much better than anything I can make. read more

This is the only place where I found a palatable steak after three summers of searching. Watch out however that they don't cheat you out of your dinner roll, If you don't ask for it they will conviniently forget it. In every other way this is a fine family restaurant. The coffee is good and keeps comming, the staff is easy to get along with and it never seems to be too crowded. read more
