The previous owner had dropped the motorcycle more than once, cracking the plastic fairing near the gas tank. John said that it's not a big deal but took the time anyway to look up the part and give me an idea of the cost. John is a big believer in using "Spray Cleaner & Polish," to clean the bike versus washing it directly with water. This is the second time I've heard this belief. I was told the same thing from a sales rep at Cycle Gear in Lake Forest; noted. John showed me the particular brand he uses and then offered to sell me his last can. How cool is that? (John said that he just placed an order for more.) John is a down-to-earth, upfront guy and I'm very happy to have been introduced to him by my friend, DC. I asked John if I had any questions or concerns about my Honda if I could call him - "Sure, anytime." John cares about the work he does and will do a thorough job. John cleaned up the bike, the wind shield, rear view mirror, oil change, checked fluid levels, he even touched it up with a shot of paint on the alternator cover from when the previous owner dropped it. John also was able to re-secure the muffler shield that was rattling around due to a bad bolt. I had previously tried to tighten it up but the bolt was frozen. John had to replace the bolt due to thread issues. I have used John several times and have always been happy and his prices have been fair. I took my barley grid in to do an oil change and install a spark plug. I took in the oil, the filter and the spark plug. John charged me two hours of labor amounting to $180. To change oil you remove the plug, drain the oil, replace the filter, and put in the new oil probably shouldn't take more than 20 min. The plug was easy to get to. 2 blots had to be removed, the old plug removed, the new plug out in, the bolts out back. At the most 10 min. I show John where the drain plug, the filter, and where to fill the oil. Two bolts were a little difficult. John removed one with vice grip and the other with a socket No estimate was given and two hours of labor was unreasonable. He doesn't have the fanciest shop, and he's not the lost and confused babe you typically find working the counter of most motorcycle repair shops, but he can fix your bike without ripping you off. I've taken three separate modern-day sportbikes to John over the past few years and he's always got me back on the road in good time. When my wife's Ninja 500 wasn't turning on, he found the disconnect in the electrical system, repaired it, and made a simple modification to keep it from ever happening again. When we picked her bike up from John's shop, my wife noticed a funny odor coming from the engine. I tried to assure her that it was probably nothing to worry about, but she still felt uneasy, so I mentioned it to John and he came right out. Immediately upon recognizing the odor, he went inside and returned with a can of WD-40. John explained to my wife that it was nothing to worry about--that a little bit of lube had dripped onto the exhaust system and was now burning off. He proved it by spraying a little more WD-40 on the exhaust for her to smell. Satisfied, she was happy to get back on the road. I like going to John's because the work he does on your bike isn't a secret. He'll show you! Whereas some mechanics seem to be afraid to put themselves out of business by education their customers, John is happy to share his wealth of knowledge. I've learned a great deal from John over the phone and in person, and I've often considered submitting my resume'. He's not too old to entertain the inquisitive young rider, and he's not too young to seem like a dumb punk in front of the older riders. John's just an honest guy who loves working on bikes. I took my old 1984 Honda CT110 to John's Cycle to get tuned up because it hadn't been ridden in years. John personally took the time to show me how to order the parts I needed to get the bike back in good working order. When I received the parts, I returned to John's Cycle and left my bike with John. John is the Best ! I had some issues with an older Honda XL250R dual sport bike, the bike would be hard to start occasionally. I was told by a friend that John is THE expert on these kind of bikes, so I took the bike there. John had the bike for a week and replaced two tires, cleaned out the carburetors, adjusted valves and did some more other minor adjustments. Now the bike starts first kick and runs like clockwork! And, his rates are very reasonable, he will call you regularly to tell you his progress, and any additional work he might need to do on the bike. I've been searching in desperation for a qualified Vespa repairman and have finally found one here. I should note that most motorcycle shops don't have repairmen that have been qualified to work on Vespas, which is apparently quite a big deal. Anyway, although the new management that's taken over the Newport Beach and Oceanside Vespa dealerships has vastly improved the caliber of personnel and service, I needed a more local guy near San Clemente. Having installed a new carb on my LX150, I finally got it running right except for some lag when first accelerating. Since I couldn't fix it myself, I took it to John and he found a solution very quickly. The scooter now runs perfectly, his price was fair for the work done, and John's a really nice guy to boot. So if you need a qualified guy to get your Vespa running perfectly, give John a shout. read more

I have nothing to say but GREAT things about John. I have a 1971 Yamaha mini endo that was mine as a kid. It hadn't been run for about 7 years and I wanted to get it running again. I cleaned the carb, put in new gas, oil, etc. I got it running but it ran terrible. I called John to see if he could fix it as many places don't work on old bikes. He knew all about my bike as he has one in his shop. I brought it in and he made some adjustments to the carb and got it running like it was brand new. He also made some other adjustments. John is very knowledgeable, cares about doing the job right and truly likes interacting with his customers. It was a pleasure getting to know him and working with him. John is an extremely honest and conscientious mechanic, meticulous in his work yet very efficient in his time. He does all work himself, works on just about anything with two wheels (he services my Honda Helix scooter). He could no doubt charge more for his work but doesn't, I suppose actually treating his customers as he'd expect to be treated. He is a true enthusiast of riding bikes and one hell of a nice guy as well, the type you WANT to give your business to. I'm going to be brutally honest: the place is an absolute mess. Boxes of old parts are strewn around what constitutes 'the waiting area' and the repair area is chock-a-block full of bikes, equiment and God knows what. Yet he's the sole repair person, "chief, cook and bottlewasher" as it were, and it absolutely works. It's not about 'show', it's a REPAIR PLACE and his time goes into fixing things rather than making it nice and pretty. Overhead savings on 'nice and pretty' are passed along to John's customers. read more

Then he fixed my 1989 Kawasaki ZX10 when no ne else would touch it because it was " TOO OLD" (per the dealer).. the latest project is a 40 y/o old go-kart with multiple issues.. He will work with you on the bike to figure out what's wrong, never rushes you into things, and gives you sound advice. I trust him completely. Very possibly the most honest, genuine, and reasonably priced motorbike mechanic in all of South OC. John works on everything from scooters and Vespas, to ATVs and motorcycles, old and new. This guy knows his stuff, let's you know what he plans to do every step of the way, and is extremely reasonable in his pricing. Had him work on my 150cc scooter that most mechanics I've spoken to wouldn't even touch. John had it sounding like a different bike altogether, idling so quietly, was able to eliminate all rattling and clattering coming from anywhere on the bike, and even went as far as to put some gas in the tank so I wouldn't have to worry about it on the ride home!
