I've been taking my BMW's to John's Foreign Car Service since about 2004. I also had a Porsche that they've helped me maintain and keep in great condition. Both Russ and Christian have always done very good work on my cars. Besides being a good and well trained mechanic, Christian has also been very helpful over his consistent 20 years of service as he also sets appointments and regularly provides all details regarding the work that he and Russ have performed on my cars. Christian's great demeanor, good ethics, polite and respectful manners, and his helpful tips on how to best maintain my cars have been a real plus over the years. And I don't think that Russ's high level, long term, mechanical experience and skill can be matched anywhere around. I'd say the main advantages to using John's Foreign Car Service are the many decades of mechanical repair experience that both Russ and Christian have to offer, their consistency (they've both been there forever), and the unusual personal touch they bring by their direct communication between the mechanics and the customers when necessary. I've been a customer for so long that they've moved their business three times! (Yeah, 30+ years). Russ the owner is super knowledgeable as is Christian and the rest of the crew. You name it, we've thrown it at them through the years. Everything from the ordinary (oil changes, tune ups) to the challenging (weird noises, odd occurrences, just plain trouble). Not only is their expertise on the level of the dealerships, and their pricing is very, very reasonable, but their honesty rules the day. We had an issue with our BMW diesel engine, which we took to them. They called back and said they could fix it, but they discovered it was covered by a BMW secret warranty! They are a small shop with limited parking. And they are in demand so patience is needed. But totally worth it in every way. ** Something BAD has happened to Russ. I have been bringing my car to him for about twenty years and never encountered him being so nasty. Russ damaged the paint on my car when he replaced my driver's side view mirror and refuses to pay for the damage. Russ must have had something on his hands when he touched the side view mirror housing, because the paint is flaking only in that specific location. The damage looks to be in the shape of fingers and the palm of a hand holding onto the housing (which would be required to replace the mirror inside the housing). There is no other spot on the car where there is this damage to the paint. The day after the repair, I noticed the damage. I called Russ to tell him, and I was told to bring in the car so he could see the damage himself, which I did. But Russ refused to look at the damage himself. Russ also refused to speak with me. Instead, he had his new receptionist look at the damage and go in the back to report to Russ. Without evaluating the problem himself, Russ refused to correct the damage he caused to my car when I asked him to have the side view mirror housing painted at his cost. I then told him I was very disappointed in his approach to solving this problem, and to look for my YELP review. Russ then informed me via email that I am not to come back to his place of business. I am incredibly disappointed in Russ. Terrible attitude and terrible treatment of a long time, loyal customer. read more

Kevin turned me from unhappy to super happy. My mechanic sent me here to get tires and an alignment which finished up a bushing/suspension project that the referring mechanic started. When the tires eventually wore out unevenly I was a bit fired up, but Kevin worked hard to resolve my predicament. Making customers happy isn't usually a difficult task, however turning a negative situation into a highly positive one happens only when the business is filled with people who really care. Additionally Kevin identified why my airbag light was illuminated after 2 other mechanic shops couldn't figure it out. Left the lights on overnight on my 2004 BMW, called Triple A for a jump. They got the car started but it wasn't running right. The car would not accelerate past 10 miles per hour, hesitating and stalling out. I thought the electronics, engine or transmission were damaged. I was so sad. When I called my regular mechanic he recommended I take it to a shop that specializes in BMW's. Enter John's Foreign Car Service .... Turned out the prior owner had sold me the car with the wrong size battery and that new battery had not been programmed. The condition could have fried the electronics of the BMW. John's solved my problem with a new Interstate battery and programmed it to the car. BMW runs beautiful, like brand new! I am one extremely happy and greatful customer. First let me state how difficult it is to find a shop who will even take an Audi in South OC. They are extremely difficult to work on. This review is for Russ, the Audi mechanic. I have an S5 that has been quite problematic for the past year. Check engine lights every couple weeks. This car was being cared for by another very popular, very reputable independent Audi VW repair shop, who could not seem to diagnose the problem. Russ got to work on the car the same day I dropped it off and found the problem within a few hours. He called me and offered a very detailed description of what needed to be repaired and why it needed to be repaired. The price was fair and the work was great. I've since had another check engine light, brought it back to Russ who identified a faulty o2 sensor, installed a new Sensor and fixed it right up. If you got sticker shock from the dealership repair service center, and are looking for a shop who knowledgeable and highly adept in Audi repair, look no further, Russ is your guy. read more

I don't write many reviews, but I have to for these guys. For the past 5 years, I've been bringing my Porsche Panamera GTS to Russ at John's Foreign Car Service. He has been so great to work with and is really focused on ensuring any repairs are done correctly and to spec and that you are a happy customer. I initally found this shop when I was looking for brakes. Not only did they do an excellent job, but they were considerably less expensive than the Porsche Dealer (duh), but also considerably less expensive than Hergesheimer Motorsports (not a knock on Hergesheimer, they were just very expensive). Russ used the very same materials as the other 2 were going to use. Russ earned my trust and I've brought my car back for several more repairs (A/C compressor replacement, more brakes and most recently an irritating issue with the suspension). Russ has been nothing less than outstanding does excellent work and provides excellent customer service. An HONEST mechanic is difficult to find. If you know nothing about cars you always wonder if they are charging me for something I do not need. I use to work for Roush Racing/Protofab so I know auto mechanics in and out. I've never told Russ/Christian or Kevin that just to test them. Every time they have fixed our cars correctly, have NEVER charged me for something I did not need and their prices are very competitive. You can trust these guys. One time I blew up the turbo in my 335i. That is usually a $3,500 repair. Russ remembered that BMW extended the warranty on the turbo and suggested I contact the dealer to find out. Sure enough he was correct and it was fixed for free. He could have easily just fixed it and charged me. That is honesty folks. Another time we both thought the rear differential was bad, instead after further testing Russ discovered it was just a bad wheel bearing. The job went from a couple of thousand dollars to around a hundred and something. I get my alignments done there, Christian is a genius at alignments and I buy my tires from Kevin. This review is long over due! I came to Russ.. "the owner" to service my Audi.. Russ replaces parts guessing.. he had me replace one axle than arbitrally replace the other.. he and Christian are poor customer service.. I spent thousands of dollars at his shop... I had valid concerns and Russ would not have the decency to come out and talk to me.. Brakes he used cheap pads .. I have soo many complaints but the one that compelled me to write this.. My audi smelled like gasoline inside .. unbearable.. went to the dealer.. yes I paid more but It was corrected properly.. and no attitude.. They found a fuel leak from deteriorated aftermarket hose from fuel line .. I have seen other women being taken advantage of from Johns foreign car..
