There's a small menu board up on the wall behind the counter that is pretty hard to read, we had better luck reading the hand written paper signs taped to the showcase. A Ham and Cheese and an Italy's Best (Genoa salami, Proscuitto, Cappicola, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, roasted red peppers, hot cherry peppers, and oil and vinegar) were $8.50 each. As we waited for the sandwiches to be prepared I, walked around the store and checked out the aisles of canned goods, and groceries. We also saw a small freezer with raviolis, gnocchis and sausages My Italy's best was pretty good -great flavor with an average portion size of meats. Customer service was odd - neither sandwich was cut in half and I don't think I've ever had a sandwich on a hard roll that wasn't cut in half. We popped some cash into the tip jar and that was met with either silence or indifference, and that always grinds my gears. read more

1st time walking into John's Imports Deli in Winsted today. Place had an "Old School" feel to it, had high hopes what i ordered would be decent, but honestly, I was underwhelmed with my grinder. Went with Italy's Best -- capicola, prosciutto & salami. Sandwich was very large, seemed like a great value for $6.75. But the bread had a "spongy" texture to it, and the deli meat was extremely salty-tasting. Wasn't able to finish the whole grinder, I just lost interest. With all the deli's in the area, can't see a return visit to John's Imports. A weak 3 Star rating, IMO. read more

I really do not see all the hype about this so called "Italian" deli....it's really not that good nor is it clean. I had a prosciutto grinder and the meat was dry from sitting in the case too long. The bread did not taste fresh either. They carry Italian groceries but very few selection. This place can improve itself by spending some money on interior renovations and using fresher products. Called order ahead while on route to lake George.... totally disappointed... ordered 2 cheese and veggie sandwiches, but instead got some cheese and about a pound of shredded lettuce on bread with two small pickles, some soggy onions and two pieces of peppers. One of my favorite spots for lunch, I love their sandwiches. Go here multiple times a week to get lunch on my lunch hour, BUT the customer service is TERRIBLE. It's soooo upsetting. Hey, it was great 40 years ago when I was getting my first degree at the college, and it's great now. They haven't changed a thing, like Brooklyn....and madonne, the provolone, the turkey breast by the pound. The gabagool, the prosciutto...Oh! This is easily one of my favorite delis anywhere, we're so lucky to have it here in Winsted. The Italian combo has sopressata, not salami, which says it all. Great bread, friendly people, huge selection of drinks, try it if you haven't. read more

Nice little deli. Stay away from the pre-made salads though (macaroni and coleslaw were stale). Also sells convenience items. I give it a 3 star because of the salads were not fresh, it's really small inside, gets packed quick and you have no idea where the line starts and the store itself is dated looking.
