    The baby

Girl who answered the phone and took the order was rushing to get me off the phone. I have worked at quite a few restaurants and when a person says " is that it" after each item ( after you say that you have a few things to order and they are special order) it is clear that the food isn't going to be made correctly. Which it wasn't . And they were not busy at all because she told us to come in 15 min and sure enough the food was out! But not right

Pasta that was supposed to come with meatballs

I was visiting my sister in Winsted and asked her where we can get a calzone and a pizza. She suggested this place. They have only ever gotten pizza from here so, their opinion was good. The pizza was good if you like a thick crust. Plenty of cheese and pepperoni and it was cooked to perfection. Now, the reason for only 3 stars. Ordered a pasta dish with meatballs... they did not add the meatballs!! We also ordered a small calzone with spinach and bacon and they put pepperoni instead. Not only that but the calzone was pretty small with little to no cheese inside. Not what I am used to from ordering calzones at countless other restaurants in the past. The bread around the calzone was pretty good so, that says something I guess. Dipped it in marinara and finished my son's pizza cause I was still hungry. Next time, cause I am willing to give them another try, I will check my items before I leave the place. Although, not sure how I would have noticed there was pepperoni instead of bacon.

Had a steak and cheese grinder and a side salad. Was expensive:$23 for lunch with a bottle of soda. The grinder is awesome though.

One of the best meatballs I've ever had. Steak and cheese sub with peppers and onions was excellent too!

Seriously the best pizza we have had in Connecticut and the waitress was a doll. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you're in the area.

To be clear, I doubt people think "Winsted CT" is a foodie destination, but if you stop at Mario's Tuscany Grill, it will be from that point forward. Starting at the top, there is plenty of parking on the street. This area of Main Street Winsted is actually ok for a little walk on the sidewalk. Once inside Mario's, the staff is very warm and friendly, showing you to a table quickly. The dining room has ample space, you do not feel crowded. The menu is amazing, on previous visits the Seafood Combination and Chicken Milanese is simply perfect and delicious with an ample portion! Here's where it gets even weirder and BETTER. If you visit their Facebook page, you see pictures of amazing platters of food. YET!, that isn't on the menu. So I asked the very friendly waiter, "how do we do these platters?".. He simply said, tell me what you want! My friend and I collaborated, and said "start with steak gorzonzola".. Ok, then what? "Well Some Clams", "how many?" Me: "I dont know,a dozen?" "that enough?", Me: "No of course not" Waiter: "What else?" Me: "well, some scallops, some shrimp, and more clams".. Waiter replies, "Ok, we'll make it nice" .. "Nice" has to be the understatement of the year. This platter comes out, Steak Gorgonzola, flanked with 18 clams, half a dozen scallops, grilled shrimp, asparagus, Caprese tomato salad.. it was unbelievable.. Everything was cooked to perfection, the presentation was absolutely outrageous, and it was incredibly delicious!! Not sure how far Winsted is from your house, but it's an hour from mine and worth the ride!! You have to visit this place..

If comfort had an address, it would be Mario's. We always kick things off with a small pizza for the table, because that's the law here. The bread and tomato relish? Should be sold by the gallon. I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for it. If you know, you know. Last night's table lineup was elite: * One of us ordered the veal Neapolitan -- fresh, tender veal in a vodka sauce so good it should have its own fan club. * Another went for the penne alla vodka with shrimp and scallop, which was hands‑down the best dish of the night. The seafood takes an already top‑tier vodka sauce and somehow makes it even better. As a Jersey boy, I don't say that lightly. * I decided to go rogue and step outside my usual penne vodka or steak. I wanted veal parm. I've never had anything fried here besides the calamari (which is amazing), so I figured: why not? Here's the plot twist: The veal parm was the only dish I've ever had at Mario's that didn't hit the usual Mario's standard. The veal itself was totally different from the fresh, delicious cut in the Neapolitan, and the breading had a little... funk. Almost like it had been prepped ahead and picked up a freezer‑burn vibe. Not bad -- just not Mario's‑level magical. But here's the thing: One imperfect dish doesn't change the fact that Mario's is one of our all‑time favorite restaurants. The atmosphere, the people, the consistency, the warmth -- it's all unbeatable. We love this place and will absolutely be back, probably embarrassingly soon. Mario's is home. Even when one dish misses, the experience never does.

The salt in chicken dish almost gave me a heart attack. I arrived with my cousin early and there was another table with four people and just us. I overheard that the people couldn't get the drinks they wanted. One of them said he waited all week for a good drink and they didn't have the right stuff to make it. The waitress made him something else but he didn't get his first choice. The flavor of my chicken tasted like it came from a smelly rancid refrigerator. So I couldn't finish it or take it home. I didn't have the heart to tell the waitress, who was trying her very best to please us. And she did a great job making suggestions. I heard someone else complain her Chicken Florentine was so salty they couldn't finish it either. So much potential for a local riverside restaurant. With changes and more arts happening in Winsted, this place might not survive the demand for better quality and a new trendy vibe like Sassos or Hanqs or Foxtails. My pasta sauce was good, but the pasta broke and fell apart. Whether overcooked or not boiled properly, or re-boiled, if you cannot cook pasta at an Italian restaurant you might consider fixing that issue, stat. They need a bartender, and to get out of the 80s with their menu. Better knowledge of drinks and wines is also important. If you're not training your staff on the latest drink trends and the names of wines, you will fail. You always have to be leery of an Italian place that spells Cavatelli wrong on their menu. "Cavitelli" can't even be found in Google. It doesn't exist. Something is not right with the way the food tastes. I hope they read this, I was going to post 2 Stars, but their affable and accommodating waitress saved them.

EXPERIENCE; What did come as a surprise to me was the popularity of this rural tavern on a fall Friday evening and the quality of food and service experienced. Jason P. had reported excellent fish and chips, noteworthy wings, and selection of local beers at the tavern in his review. I ordered the fish and chips alongside the server's suggested Norbrook Farm-brewed Mount Pisgah IPA. The fish and chips dish ($20) was as Jason had described -- "TOP TIER". I look forward to exploring the menu further (although it will be hard to pull me away from the fish and chips). Kudos to the tavern's Head Chef Austin Ouelette and his crew! AMBIANCE: There are three dining areas -- an outdoor patio, a newly renovated, modern dining room, and the original dining room filled with colonial-inspired furniture. TIP: Parking lot size was insufficient the Friday evening I visited, necessitating parking on the shoulder of State Route 20 . This possibility may be circumvented via a visit on an earlier weekday. The service is great, but since it's a pretty small place the waitresses might be pretty busy so just be patient. With that said, seating is fairly limited on a busy Friday/Saturday night or if they are having a special for dinner, so definitely make reservations! We came for late lunch on Saturday and it was fairly quiet. Needless to say, since it's off the beaten path we sometimes forget this gem is here but when we remember we never regret it!

In fact, it was common in the 80's and 90's to see multiple generations working to provide their customers the best... I had that experience yesterday. Upon walking into the spotless dining room, I saw Nonna/Mom/Great Aunt in the first booth looking over the operation while the next generation was busy in the kitchen - and working in concert with the youngest family member who was working the floor. Fantastic. So friendly, so heartwarming. I also watched as "regulars" came in for their dinner. They ALL stopped by the kitchen entry to say hello to all employees and each employee greeted them by name. I hope to one day achieve this status. The food was good. I had a side salad, fried calamari, and a small pizza (half plain, half pepperoni and ricotta). Everything was fresh, tasty, and really well cooked. I was very happy to be a part of a dinner service there. I am looking forward to trying an entree - I have a craving for veal... maybe later this week. My only knock on my experience is that their sauce is very simple, and, in my opinion, lacks a little tang to stand up to the pizza cheese and toppings. But the crust was almost clinically perfect. My half pepperoni and ricotta side was slightly floppy in the middle - but I have to take responsibility for that as it was a tough order. Each half of my pizza cooks much differently. The plain cheese side was perfect. I can't wait to go back.
