The cost was much higher than I typically pay for dry cleaning and unfortunately they shrank all of my clothes. So much so that I can't wear 2 sweaters and a pair of pants anymore. I'm out $75 for the dry cleaning and $200 for clothes I can't wear anymore. All of these items have been dry cleaned before at other locations and didn't have this issue. read more

I love this place! The service and convenience is top notch - they have their own parking lot right out front, I've never had a wait, and the turnaround times are quick. I came the first time for some minor alterations - I brought in a few pairs of work pants that I'd stopped wearing because they didn't fit right, and I was thrilled with the price, how easy and fast it was, and how great every thing turned out. Steve does a great job. If he knows you're in a pinch, he can often negotiate an earlier pick up. He does well with dry cleaning my suits and laundering my dress shirts. We even brought in a Pendleton blanket and it came back brand new. Value wise the price of services it is pretty comparable to others in the area. read more

Steve seems to have a photographic memory. I get basic alterations done here on a regular basis and my regular dry cleaning. You can negotiate a bit on the return date if you're in a hurry. Every once in a while I get a shirt back with a wrinkle or something, but y'know, that's life. Price increase between when I emailed for a quote and showed up to have my clothes cleaned.

I have always appreciated Steve's friendliness and the way he will rush an order if needed. Today's experience was astounding, however. I had taken a sweater in that had gone through the washer with a vitamin in it= big stain. I tried to remove it myself and made it worse. When I took it to him he told me that he didn't think they could do anything with it, that there was too much damage. I was so sad and left it in their garbage can. When I went today to pick up other items, he had a big smile on his face and said he had a surprise. He had actually taken the sweater out of the garbage can and worked hard to get the stain out. It looked pretty great. What a nice gesture..this is the type of thing that only happens when you support local business! read more

I've been going to this place for years and have always had a good experience until this week. I dropped off a few things, and when I came back to pick it up he charged me double. I showed him the receipt and he still insisted I pay double the amount. I had an item sewed and it was not done correctly at all. Really disappointed in this place and won't be going back due to this terrible experience. read more

I just moved to Portland from San Francisco, and this place is close to where I live in the South Wterfront. I have been going consistently for a few months. There were some times where things were done incorrectly and I had to bring them back, but I enjoyed my rapport with Steve which made it worth it. I figured it's all right that they weren't done super well because I knew they would get it right the second time, and I like that Steve knew my name every time, so I let it slide without really thinking twice. About a month ago, I started bringing in my boyfriend's clothes to clean and to alter. Ever since then, Steve have has been short and curt with me on each trip. Cold, compared to how friendly he was. Going in used to be a better part of my day because of how cool and fun he was. On two separate occasions, I asked them to replace a missing button, and they didn't. Steve said he didn't charge me, but since I didn't see the receipt I'm not sure if that's true or not. He seemed unsure of it himself. I asked why he didn't bother to let me know he couldn't do the button, as I would have fixed it myself by the time my boyfriend needed to wear the pants for work. All he said was, "you can bring them back in and we will fix it for you." To that I responded that I will find a new place and thanks. I wouldn't recommend this place. As I said before, they didn't do a great job and I often had to take it back a second time. I even had a beautiful designer silk blouse that I paid $300 for with a stain on the back. I asked if he can remove that, he said it looked like sweat and yes. When I went to pick up the shirt, the stains were still there but he still charge me for the shirt. Dishonest people... Steve and company do great, customer-centric work, and they do it with a smile! I had not visited the business in nearly 2 years, and Steve remembered me and my name on sight. Impressive, to say the least. They have always been willing to rush (read: overnight) cleanings if necessary; otherwise, their standard 2-business day turnaround (e.g. drop off Monday, pick up Wednesday) works well and is at the very least industry standard around Portland. I'm not exactly a dry cleaning frequent flyer. I wash and press my own shirts, and people never wear suits in this town (at least not where I hang out). But when I needed my tux cleaned for my wedding, and a few other suits cleaned, I gave John's Landing Cleaners a shot. They did a great job with all of my items, and the price was right. The folks here are friendly and they launder and press women's and men's shirts perfectly well, if you do not object to their using a permanent marker to write your name on the label. I brought in a boiled wool coat for end-of-the-season dry cleaning. They cleaned it satisfactorily but also pressed it with a hot iron, resulting in a total loss of the wool's loft. Conclusion, whoever did this doesn't know nearly enough about treating wool. I would never take anything to them again that I care about. In addition, the coat was returned to me on a skinny wire hanger - the type that's fine for a cotton shirt but never for wool. Professional standards, anyone? read more

They obviously cannot press linen to save their lives. My shirt and slacks came back in the same condition that they went in (although they were cleaned). This used to be a good place - now, not so much. And $26 for three slacks and a shirt? I'm searching elsewhere - even if I do have to drive a little farther. read more

Broken buttons and poorly pressed shirts. When brought to their attention I was told, "sorry", with no offer of correction.

Had a burn mark on my shirt after they cleaned it and my wife brought it to the owners attention. Said that he didn't do it. Fine. So my wife had an idea that they could hem the bottom of the shirt higher to hide the burn. She went back in to ask them to do it with the intention of paying for it. When she walked in the guy went off on her saying it wasn't his fault. Almost had her in tears. What I would like to do to him would get me in trouble so this review is my only recourse. I used John's Landing cleaners about 15 times and was generally pleased with the service. It's conveniently located, only a block away from where I live. However, they lost a pair of my slacks. Although I fully understand that accidents happen, what was displeasing is that the guy who manages the front desk did not express any type of apology or course of action, but rather acted like I was bothering him. He was never all that friendly in general, but the last time I went in, was the last time I'd ever go back. If you use JL Cleaners, be sure to keep your receipts. This is the second dry cleaners in Portland that I have bad a bad experience with, so now I've resorted to doing my own ironing and pressing at home. read more

A good friend recommended John's Landing Cleaners as I was looking for a reputable place to clean my 10'X13' wool handwoven rug and not get charged an arm and a leg for it. Other places were quoting over $400 for the privelege. JLC quoted $280. I dropped it off in Feb and they told me it would be ready March 10. Come the 10th, it wasn't ready and I was told it's taking longer than expected and they'd give me a call when it was ready. The 1st of April rolled around and no call, and I was getting nervous because this is a cherished rug, but I also realized that it's a big freaking rug and well used with some coffee stains and dog rawhide particles that needed special focus. Finally, by the 7th I called to find out what was going on. I was told that there was only one guy working on it (JLC contracts out that kind of work) and it was just taking a long time. I envisioned a ruined rug and told JLC that I wanted to pick up my rug on the 14th whether it was done or not, and I was told it would be done by then. Sure enough, I received a call the afternoon of the 14th that it was ready and I went in the next morning to pick it up. The man at the front desk was very apologetic and did the right thing by giving a steep discount for my worry. The work on the rug was well done. What could have easily been a one-star experience became a 4 star experience. It would have been 5 if it was done on time. read more
