My girlfriend and I were visiting Philly from LA and had just disembarked from Norwegian Cruise Line. This was the first cruise out of Philadelphia in about 15 years. Anyway, a pretty good cheesesteak with Provolone if I remember correctly. I have to say, Uncle Gus' Cheesesteak was next level insanely delicious in comparison. My girlfriend and I visited John's Roast Pork during December, when the chilly Philadelphia weather made a hot roast pork sandwich sound absolutely perfect. John's has occupied the same South Philadelphia corner since 1930 and is still operated by the third generation of the Bucci family. Despite its reputation, we only waited in line for a few minutes. I ordered the namesake roast pork sandwich, while my girlfriend chose the cheesesteak. After ordering, you wait for your name to be called and then pick up your sandwiches, drinks, and chips. Seating is available in a partially enclosed indoor-outdoor tent, which thankfully had heat during our winter visit. Our sandwiches arrived piping hot--you could see steam rising from them as we unwrapped them. The roast pork was incredibly juicy, flavorful, and tender. My girlfriend normally does not care for pork, but even she loved it. She was equally impressed with her cheesesteak. We both ordered footlong sandwiches but could only finish about half. The portions are extremely generous, so arrive hungry or prepare to take leftovers with you. This was hands down one of the best sandwiches I have eaten in quite some time. Our lunch also included a brief culinary crisis. An out-of-town visitor approached the counter and demanded a "Philadelphia-style hot dog." The employees politely explained that they did not serve hot dogs but offered to prepare something resembling a roast-pork-sandwich-style hot dog. The man became offended, declared that he would never return, and stormed away. As we were leaving, we saw the same man getting out of his car wearing a fake mustache. Apparently, his hunger had defeated his pride, and the disguise allowed him to return for the roast pork sandwich without technically breaking his vow. Visiting Philly had to come here.10 years since I've been here this place still is delicious. They have changed to a window which I think is better with outdoor seating. The staff were so kind and welcoming. While they are known for the roast pork, I always get the cheesesteak with onions and cooper sharp. Prices have gone up since I've last been here but it's around the same prices as any other spot in the city. Philly is also known for roast pork place so I tried one of their most well known spots: John's Roast Pork. There's only like 3 actual parking spots, most people just parallel park on the street and walk over. They have a little patio if you would like to eat there but I think most people just take it to go. I got their roast pork sandwich with cooper sharp cheese and spinach. They don't have the broccoli rabe here that Philly is known for. The sandwich was so juicy and the pork was tender. It actually goes very well with the spinach. I got the large Roast Pork sandwich - you can see from the attached picture the 'preferred toppings' (Dad's Way) are: Mustard Raw onions Hot seeded pepper American cheese I had only the Mild Provolone cheese on mine - no mustard, raw onions or seeded pepper. I would have had cooked (caramelized) onions - but they had only raw...and American cheese was not a choice for me (I was raised on it). The pork is supposed to be 'slow roasted (7 hours) pork shoulder (pork butt)' - and it may very well be, but it reminds me of the meat that's carved off the large vertical rotisseries for gyros. It doesn't look that appealing - it's like a large sub sandwich. The pork was soft, tender and seasoned well - the roll was very good - John's had been getting its bread from Carangi Bakery. However, the bakery closed due to a fire so I'm not sure where the bread is from, unless it reopened. I finally satisfied my curiosity about John's and went to see what the sandwich was like. A bit further out of the city, this place boasts one of the best roast pork sandwiches in Philadelphia. Fortunately, I had a car rental so this place was not too long of a drive away, and there is plenty of parking. We got the large roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and spinach, and honestly liked this a bit more than Tommy Dinics. Yay, time for a revisit. Because cheesesteak on a Saturday afternoon is awesome. Cooper sharp is now an option and it's a delightful addition. The seeded roll was crisp with plenty of melty cheese and a ton of meat. Sadly, had to lose a star for my beloved crinkle cut fries that were way over salted and a bit cold. Portion size was way smaller than my last visit. My favorite parking spot is to pop over to the IKEA shopping plaza and park behind the Home Depot garden center. After ready the reviews I was prepared to wait in line for a while. But...they crank the orders so quickly! We probably only had to wait in line a few minutes before it was our turn to order. After ordering, that did seem like a while - but it was probably because I was starving and watching everyone else eat their delicious looking food. Surprisingly it wasn't as cheesy as we thought it would be despite ordering it with American and mild provolone. The bread is somewhat firmer than a normal cheesesteak which helped to hold everything together (also it was a sesame roll). The roast pork sandwich was also huge and flavorful. Honestly though, the meat was such a show stopper that everything else almost took away from it. I can see why they sell the meat by the pound. And the onion rings. Very crisp but were room temp when they called our number (still good though). I especially liked the batter. It was more like a hush puppy batter around the soft onions. All were delicious, and we would definitely go again if we are ever back in Philly. After trying roast pork at Tommy DiNic's at the Reading Terminal, and absolutely hating it, I thought maybe roast pork wasn't for me. So I kept pushing John's Roast Pork down the priorities list of Philly cheesesteak places I wanted to try. I was a fool. We were in Philly to see the Deftones at the Well's Fargo arena, and the weather forecast had said rain, so I decided to find a cheesesteak place that was 1: accessible and 2: had indoor seating. I wanna go to Angelo's but they're not accessible, which means I'll have to find a park or someplace nearby with a table so I can eat. And I'm not doing that in the cold, or rain. The weather was fine, but the decision was made and I don't regret it. Not one bit. We got a cheesesteak, American cheese and grilled onions, which was absolutely incredible. And the house recommended Pop-Pop's Special Roast Pork sandwich. I was under the impression that broccoli rabe was an essential ingredient to the Philadelphia roast pork experience, but John's was either out or just doesn't use it. Our sandwich had hot pepper seeds, sharp provolone, mustard and raw onions. It was outstanding and a real joy. The meat was tender and moist, and the toppings work so well with the rich pork flavor. The seating situation was alright. Most of the tables are round, blue ones, with benches that don't move, and no room to park a wheelchair. But, inside there were a couple of booths and tables that I could access. Most were in use, but there was one table just magically waiting for us, so I could properly tuck in and tuck in. I was visiting Philly recently for a short trip and John's Roast Pork was the main attraction. I had pretty high expectations coming in because of their reputation. Place wasn't too crowded when I came (weekday lunchtime) but it took a while for my order to come out, which seems par for the course here. There's no place to sit and eat at this place FYI. I ordered a cheesesteak w/ swiss and onions ($14.25) and also got a bottle of Mountain Dew ($2.25). Total was $18.12 including tax. I had a good first impression when I got my steak because it was pretty huge. The wrapper of the steak had a good amount if grease as well. Upon opening it up, it was hot, steamy, and definitely seemed freshly prepared. First bite was pretty amazing and I can see why there's a lot of hype. The steak was messy as hell to eat but it hit the spot overall. Bread was really good too. The only criticism I had was that the meat seemed slightly tougher than it should've been. Overall, I'd give 4 stars. I don't think pricing is fantastic here but you definitely get a lot of food for your money and the steak hits different for sure. read more

These folks know what they're doing not just from a steak standpoint but from an overall operations standpoint bc it runs likes a well oiled machine and the folks are friendly (despite the reputation some Philly jawns have). Menu is simple and I went w the steak with both American and sharp provolone cheeses and fried onion (ketchup and mayo on the side). Sandwich is a nice size and stuffed with steak, cheese and a perfect balance of onion and the bread is chef's kiss!
