Took my son's baseball glove for repair and the fix appeared to be fine, no issues. After a few weeks it broke again, not sure why but needed a fix again. (Even if it was at my expense). When we went into the store we explained it had just been fixed and before I could get anything more out, he started yelling at us and telling us "he didn't fix the glove, that's not his work!". I explained it WAS fixed there but either way, we just needed to get it fixed again. He insisted we were never there, wasn't interested at looking at his records and refused to fix it. I understand if you don't want to fix, but telling me I was lying and yelling at us was completely unacceptable. I tripped over a curb and fell and I really scraped up and damaged a brand new pair of leather loafers and my leather handbag. I brought the items to Johns Shoe Repair. He explained that it would take a few days. I was not sure they would be able to be repaired because they were really scraped up pretty bad. Took a nice piece of luggage to John's because the pull tab on a zipper on an outside pocket was pulled off. I had the new slider with new pull tab and John was able to remove stitching, open up the end stop and replace the old slider with the new slider. He then reapplied the end stop and manually re-stitched the leather surrounding the zipper. He did a great job and the luggage is like new. Two people worked on it for 2 hours and he charged me $40.00. A great bargain for the work done. Work was done promptly and with skill. I highly recommend. read more

I brought in an older pair of Cole Haan shoes and John was honest enough to tell me that the sole is not sewn, only glued, and not worth gluing back on to the shoe. Few people are honest enough to turn down work in order to let the customer it makes more sense to buy a new shoe than to pay him $40 to glue back on a sole that is in poor condition. read more

I went back today with both and the price he quoted for the 1 shoe was much higher today. Oh he couldn't resole a shoe for that price. I just want my shoe resoled and agreed on the higher price and now he wants a deposit. Why didn't he mention that yesterday? Didn't have my purse with me but told him I'm leaving my shoe with you. Brought in men's boots to be repaired, Original soles and heels lasted 2 years. After this hack repaired them, they lasted 2 months. Avoid this place, unles you want to get ripped off and throw your money away. Time for this man to retire, or close the doors for good. Excellent shoe revitalization! I've brought several pairs of shoes there for shine, heels, etc. The owner is great, but not named John by the way. Old world value and great services. I also recently had three dog leashes (two leather and one fabric training lead) repaired there. Very good value, excellent, quick, and durable repairs. I'll always bring my shoe and leather repairs to this shop in Wheaton. Just for the record, the owner/operator is "old school", so expect great craftmanship, but kinda "by his rules". If you're a "delicate flower", perhaps go somewhere else; but if you're a solid mid-westerner who doesn't cringe if your delicate feelings gets bumped a bit, go here for "old world craftmanship" at fair prices. John was able to tighten the strap and add a new piece of elastic to keep them comfortable, and it only took him a few days! Highly recommend! read more

Absolutely love John's Shoe Repair. I had a pair of leather boots that he punched extra holes in for my laces and it took him less than 2 mins to get it done. I also recently took in a pair of leather sandals that fit loose because the heel strap had excess material. So he cut the leather to my exact specifications and sewed them back up and also punched an extra hole on each sandal so that they can fit a little snugger. This man has been in business before I was born (he opened in 1982) and truly knows what he is doing. I am a bit upset with some of the negative reviews, especially the vulgar ones. Treat him with respect and you'll get respect, period. Y'all. Lets just get something straight. Don't come to a shoe repair shop owned by a shoe craftsman asking to get a pair of flip flops from Walmart repaired. This is not your place and the owner will tell you he can't and will not do it... because he just can't! John was extremely helpful, nice, and direct. I brought him a pair of flats that cost me a couple hundred and that I care about so much I really want to make them last. They were the first nice pair of shoes I bought myself... But, they have a lot of love on them. The sole was so worn there was the beginning of what looked like a hole. The tip of the sole near the toe area was busted, and all around... my flats did not look pretty. Right away John told me he could fix my shoes by placing a rubber sole on both the heel and the top part (see pictures!). He is very talkative, but in a very endearing way. He and his wife run this whole operation and every time I come to the shop he is working on something with his goggles on. He is very direct and kind of a no-funny business guy and his wife is very sweet. He asks for a deposit, because according to what he told me, people often leave their shoes there for repair and come back weeks later or just not at all. My sole repair cost $45 and I just paid it up front. You get a little ticket with your order number and how much you paid. I dropped them off on a Tuesday and he had them done by the time I came by Friday at 3pm. This is a local, family run store, so they do things their own way. Cash or checks ONLY, so I had to run to the ATM (there's one 3min away) to get some cash. This is not your typical megastore so don't come expecting an Apple Pay option. I kind of really liked that, and I loved supporting a hardworking and nice couple like them, so I was glad to give a local store my business. He's a master at his craft and you can tell he takes so much pride in his work. He's honest and upfront and won't yip you: so if he can't do the job or your shoe is not fit for that kind of repair he will just tell you that. When he handed me my shoes he looked so happy and even more so happy when he saw how excited I was! He was even more happy when I asked to take a picture of him with the shoes! Overall, 100% recommend all around for excellent cobbling work. Can't wait to bring in my beat up Birkenstocks next week to get them new soles! (Disclaimer: in my pics you can see the suede on my flats is worn... That can't really be fixed and I didn't ask him to, he just did the soles!) read more

I have a pair of Victorian boots that periodically need to be reheeled; he takes good care of me. The shank(?) in the sole had broken and my last shoe repair place couldn't figure out what the problem was; John figured it out, fixed it, and my can't-replace-them boots are now no longer floppy and looking good. This place is a bit off the beaten path for me, but it's worth the trek. Not very many shoe repair people can do the quality of work that this place does. If you don't want to pay to have your shoes fixed, don't buy cheap shoes.
