I'm always down to check out a new sub shop and when hubby told me about Jon Smith Subs we quickly planned a lunch date. We ordered a 12" Italian on white bread, grilled without tomato and split it. The bread was fresh and soft. I really liked the grilled Italian meats, Italian dressing, mayo combo. The lettuce, pickles and onions added a lovely freshness and crunch. I remember when this place opened I got a number of coupons for it and kept meaning to go, but never made it. Actually, I think the one time I went when I was already in the area, they told me the coupon I had had to be used at dinner time. So, I ended up leaving. I finally tried this place over a year after it opened and I didn't find it to be anything too special. I like the fact that they had a number of chicken subs and I was torn between the chicken teriyaki and the steak bomb. I ended up deciding I wanted to try sort of a Philly cheesesteak and so I got the steak bomb without mayo. We also got a half tuna sub and a kids turkey sub combo. I was very disappointed by the cheesesteak. I'm not exactly sure what "bomb" means, but I was expecting it to sort of be bursting with flavor. It really had no flavor, despite visibly having onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, and cheese. There was oddly a strip of bacon sitting on top (not chopped into the meat) , which was really the only component that added any seasoning as it was a little salty. I ended up having to put both ketchup and barbecue sauce on it at home to give it some seasoning. The tuna sub fared better, although it was a bit liquidy so the bread was soggy. The kids turkey sub combo was just that, turkey and white bread. The portion was very good though for a kids meal as it appeared to be an entire 6-inch sub and a small order of fries with a drink. that was definitely a good deal. If you haven't been, note that they only offer white bread, no bread, or sandwich toppings put on a salad All in all, this probably wouldn't be a place I would return to unless I wanted to try the chicken teriyaki sub. But I will say that the worker who packaged my order was very friendly and the restaurant was clean. I was a little concerned about the fate of this place as nobody was in there eating, but hopefully they are doing well. read more

Stopped in today for a late lunch at this sub shop located in a Publix shopping center on Hodges near JTB. The small shop offers counter service and has about ten tables (mostly 4 tops) was mostly empty when I entered but they seem to do a brisk carry out business. Their menu is an assortment of hot and cold subs in 6 and 12 inch (some of which are called bombs and come in like a cheesesteak but with different proteins). I opted for an Italian sub which is a cold sub that had pepperoni, capicola, salami, and ham along with provolone. I opted for lettuce, tomato, mayo, oregano and oil and vinegar on mine (oil and vinegar is on the side). I also added fries and drink to make it a combo. A short time after ordering the young lady at the front counter brought my sub to the table and it looked great and they gave me so many fries I could not eat them all. My sub was well prepared but the pepperoni overpowered the other flavors. Also, my fries were crispy and well salted. There is ketchup on the table along with Tabasco if that's your jam but I had to peel the protective cover off my ketchup to get stuff out. Hubby and I decided to meet today at this sub shop for a quick lunch. This is not our norm as we usually do table service spots, but he was intrigued by the fries at a sub shop and it was next door to my nail salon. I will say the place was clean, the service was friendly, the fries were really good and the sandwiches were good, though falling a little short. My husband ordered the Cuban and thought it was good but it was a little greasy he said. I ordered the cold veggie sub and it was good but I wished they offered more cold veggie toppings like cucumbers, black olives, banana peppers, etc. Now let me tell you, we love fries and one order is more than enough for two people. We could not finish our two orders. They are seasoned perfectly! This is a fast casual, order at the counter, minimal restaurant. It seemed more people chose take out as opposed to eating in. Sure, moments sitting in the Jon Smith Subs café were dominated by mouthfuls of tasty steak, peppers, and mushrooms mingling with Philly flavor. Yes, I took my time dipping the skinny, salted-just-right french fries in the ranch that was readily available in the condiment zone. But between giant bites into the Steak Bomb sub and the Cuban oozing Swiss, I got to know the owner, Solomon Jones. Solomon recommended starting with the Steak Bomb or the Gator, which has all the meats - including kielbasa! I sampled the Steak Bomb (a Philly extravaganza) and the Cuban. Some Cuban sandwiches have minimal proportions, stale bread, and are pressed to paper thin. Not this one. Tons of ham, roasted pork, and Swiss oozed out from the very fresh bread. I was waiting for my fries to finish and I was watching the employees. The lady that put the toppings on the subs kept very busy keeping things in order such as emptying cardboard boxes and placing them in the back of the store. The only problem is that she kept the same pair of gloves on. I can't tell you if the sub was good because I could not bring myself to eat it. She might as well have not worn gloves. I feel bad writing this because she was a hard worker, but she needs education on changing gloves. read more

Service was friendly and I was greeted as soon as I walked in. Decided to go with the Italian. It was a big sandwich, and the Italian meats were quality--I could taste the difference. Bread was fresh and soft, loved the seasoning they added to the veg, and that they had green lettuces! I know that seems minor, but I feel like the norm is iceberg at most places. My third time here and always a good experience. The subs are delicious and everything seems to be made to order. Very filling subs for a reasonable price. The Gator and teriyaki subs have been my favorites. Fries are made to order and they have a few sauces available. Parking is easy in the large Publix parking lot. The interior is clean and pleasant with three TVs. What really sets this place a part though is the service. The manager has always been so genuinely nice and helpful, a rarity in this day and age. Great visit to the brand new Jon Smith Subs location on Hodges Blvd off JTB next to Marco's Pizza . Was scrolling my newsfeed last night and saw their grand opening was Monday. Rolled in around 2:30 pm for a late lunch and was greeted very politely and quickly. There are menu boards but I sat with a paper menu. I picked three sandwiches to try( certainly not finish) and made one a combo with fries. First was the Steak Bomb Grilled onions peppers mushrooms bacon tomato provolone and mayo. The hoagie is a sof white 6" roll. The sandwich as you can see from the picture is loaded with meat and toppings. Second was the 6" Authentic Italian Cold Cuts with Genoa Salami, smoked ham, pepperoni, capicola, provolone and oregano. It's also topped with lettuce tomato pickles and onion Finally the headliner was the 12" Gator (only one size available) Sirloin steak, chicken, kielbasa, bacon onions provolone and Swamp Sauce. I scurried to unwrap each sandwich to try a bite or two while fresh. The Steak Bomb had tons of flavor and great portions of meat and veggies. Reminded me of a food truck steak sandwich, not a Philly, but a good flat top grilled steak and pepper sub. The Italian was also a big hit. Several layers of salty cured meats topped with crisp fresh veggies. It was easily 60% more than your average chain Italian sub. I wanted more than two bites but there was a Gator lurking. The Gator was obscene! It was even double wrapped to contain this prehistoric carnivoral merry go round. The hoagie, like a corset in a burlesque gig was struggling to contain all the flesh. Kielbasas popping out like hernias through my fingers. At one point there was Swamp sauce all around me, like Artex in the Swamps of Sadness! "Aaaarteeeeex!!!!" I barely got out of there alive. This is clearly their masterpiece and the rock upon which Jon will build his church . The fries were hot and crispy but needed some S&P. I'm a sucker for seasoned fries. I also grabbed a huge homemade Macadamia nut Cookie. I counted 8 staff in the back cooking, prepping and wrapping. At least three young ladies checked with me throughout my meal and provided me with to-go supplies. Something about the paint scheme reminded me of Bubbakoo's Burritos . Think it was the green. I'm not saying you have to drive across town to "experience" this place. It is definitely good quality, great portions, and friendly service. The restaurant and bathrooms were clean and i got all that food and drink for about $40. I recommend trying the Steak Bomb it's one of my favorites and if you don't eat steak don't worry they offer it with chicken as well. Worst Cuban I ever wasted my taste buds on. Bland soggy over flattened door mat. Wife's Classic was an onion sandwich with a little flavorless sirloin on it. Salad was gross had some wilted lettuce mixed in with a pile of onions on the side. My son did like the Bomb sandwich, but he was just starving so would have eaten anything. Delicious food, kind and customer service focused staff, very clean restaurant. Stopped by on Labor Day afternoon, after a weekend of partying and eating crazy, I just wanted a sandwich. I think I read about this place opening through the local newspaper and bookmarked it as a place I wanted to try soon. I was greeted with a warm welcome and walked straight to the counter to browse over the menu and order. I settled on the Gator as all of the other options were sandwiches that I could've ordered elsewhere. The Gator includes: steak, chicken and kielbasa with onions and bacon bits. My only gripe here is that if you choose the Gator you're forced to get a 12 inch which I don't understand at all, I've never ordered a 12 inch in my life and they cut it in half so why not serve it in a 6 inch option? It was way too much sandwich for me. I hate wasting food. I took it home but we all know that subs never make good leftovers. The fries were shoe string style and very tasty. We were so stoked to see Jon Smiths finally make it up here from WPB!!! It's been 10 years since we had a JS sub! It tasted the same! Perfect! Prices have gone up, but that's everywhere. We no longer have to go to two different places when we go out for subs. Our girls always wanted fries with their subs :) now we can finally enjoy our sub with a side of fries at one place! We tried the Hodges Blvd location this past weekend. My husband and I both ordered the Hot Pastrami sub. Based on this sub alone, we would not eat here again. As a pastrami lover, I had high hopes for this sub, sadly it disappointed. I bit into the sandwich and there was zero flavor. The meat was stringy and tough and oddly did not taste anything like any pastrami I am used to. The onions on the sub were cut way too large. The only discernable flavor to this sub was the mustard on it. The bread was fresh and soft, but also had zero flavor. This location was clean. The staff was so-so and not very welcoming. I grew up in South Florida and loved going to the original Jon Smith Subs locations near Boca, West Palm Beach, etc. That was over 20 years ago, but I never forgot how good a Jon Smith tuna sub was with a side of their fresh, made-to-order fries. Well, after waiting two long decades, I can finally enjoy Jon Smith Subs again! Took my family to the new Hodges Blvd. location and had a great meal - the "Bomb" steak sub, tuna sub, and, of course, a couple orders of their signature fries. The location was clean, staff was welcoming and friendly, and the food was just as I remembered: fresh, filling, and a great value! I hope the new Jacksonville Jon Smith Subs locations thrive as they bring a significantly better sandwich experience to the area vs the existing options. My husband and I stopped here on a whim before our Mayo appt because it was close to our hotel and we didn't have a lot of time. It was great! I would definitely come here again. It was very clean and the staff was nice. The prices were good. The total for 2 combos (one fries, one chips) was about the same as our subway the day before with just one combo. My husband had the Italian and said it was great. I had the steak bomb without tomatoes. I felt it lacked a little bit of flavor and that's why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Honestly I probably would have enjoyed a cold turkey sub more and if we were in town longer I would come here again! The bread is so fresh and really helps make the sandwich. I love a good order of fries, and I have to say these fries were the best I've had in a while. The fries were freshly made and had great flavor. I used the online ordering system, and I had no issues. When picking my order up, the ambiance seemed nice. The staff was friendly and helpful. A few things stood out Tasty Meats and toppings with really good ingredients Good variety of meats , not just sliced cold cuts Had the 12" pastrami and 6" steak bomb sans onions So why only a 3 star ranking? The bread! The only choice is a white fluffy hoagie style roll Whilst technically nothing wrong with the bread ( it was light fluffy and fresh tasting) It just added nothing to the sandwiches Maybe more options in the future !? Took some friends visiting from California there. First visit for all of us. They split a hot pastrami.. they said that it was extremely flavorful..a little dry.. they were both ecstatic about the fries..as was I. I had the special. It was a little over seasoned but good..next time I'm getting extra onions and cheese.. I wish that I had taken pictures.. they've only been open a few weeks.. they are still working out kinks.. customer service was fantastic. The eating area is simple and pleasant.
