We were on a mini getaway in Carlsbad and wanted some authentic delicious Mexican food. We found Jorge's, a little hole in the wall in a strip mall using Yelp. The food didn't disappoint. Our kids loved it and so did the we. Felipe, the manager, was warm and hospitable and made sure we were well fed and happy. We highly recommend Jorge's. Ok...so I've been going to the place for years - and it's turned into a very popular episode from Seinfeld, "The Soup Nazi". Pros: The soup is fantastic, hence the reason why I wait for minutes upon minutes while nearly regretfully not going to Ricos, Robertos, Cotixans, etc. (all imo better aside from the soup). Cons: 1.) What business takes phone orders, then gives your number when you arrive while others with walk in orders are immediately placed in front of you. Don't even bother calling, half the time they will rarely pick up their phone bec of their lack of customer service. 2.) Make sure you know EVERYTHING is extra....i mean EVERYTHING. 3.) Like I've said before, nothing there compares to Ricos, Juanitas, or even the "fast food" Cotixans when it comes to anything but soup. 4.) They don't take Amex...really? What year is it?? 5.) Their kitchen is shady as F*ck...you go for the soup to get sick and peer over and i'm not sure if the stuff makes you feel any better in the actual long run. Try the chili verde, chicken enchilada, soup and chili releno....though the chili verde can be a little inconsistent, all of the above are worth a try. Being going to local place for years.........always great Mexican food. Local and low key. I always call in for my order to go. Does it take awhile sometimes, yes, 5 minutes or so. However, calling in today, I was on hold for 22 minutes. Hearing everything in the background. People ordering and then sometimes no customers. The food is really good. Would be five star but They use a little too much salt on some items and the employees are really rude when it comes to the salsa. They are really stingy with it. Ordered two burritos and the guy asks me if I want "one or two salsas?" I can use 3 on one burrito easy. Don't mind paying more just quit being salsa nazis. read more

I was super hungry before I ate, so you would think my biased review would be tilted towards 4 or 5 stars... I ordered the world famous chicken soup and the #7 (2 crispy tacos). The soup was good, but over hyped. It appears as though it should be packed with all sorts of flavors, but it is actually rather bland for being so famous. The crispy tacos were large, fresh, and loaded with cold, but fresh guacamole. Nothing about the tacos were all that fantastic. I'm glad I went to check it out, but I won't go again. read more

I have been going to Jorge's for over 15 years....this is by far the best Chicken Soup I have ever had - It is the Holy Grail of Holy Grail soups.... Jorge (the original owner runs the location on Santa Fe) and his son runs the original location (on Encinitas Blvd). Both establishments are incredibly friendly and over accommodating to your interests and needs. All the food that they serve is great but the Chicken Soup is something that you will never forget and will continue to crave and drive to get this soup when it is cold out or if you (or your children who also know Jorge's soup as well as I do) have a fever, feel sick - you WILL drive to get this. I am sorry for the less than favorable comments - as I couldn't disagree more. I live in Carlsbad and use to work in Encinitas, which is where I originally was shown this fabulous establishment. Cold day? Got the sniffles? Craving soup? You've come to the right place!! Jorge's has my favorite chicken soup hands down. It comes spicy or regular, and option for chips, corn, or flour tortilla on the side. I prefer the flour tortillas! I love that it comes with avocado and it always tastes fresh whether it's raining out or not. I usually take my soup to go because it gets pretty crowded, especially during the colder days since Jorge's serves everyone's favorite chicken soup, obviously. The spicy isn't too spicy, and if you need an xxxxtra kick, they offer a container of spicy goodness on the side. I also enjoy their california burritos, and their rolled tacos which stay crispy even on the ride home! Tip: Ask for condiments (i.e. avocado, guac, sour cream) on the side so everything stays fresh! Showed up tonight and it took about 15 minutes to place my order, but even worse, it took 40 minutes to get a single serving of soup. PLEASE...don't judge the place by the appearance of the establishment (hole in the wall), or you will miss out. Their food is off the chain! I could eat the chicken soup every day if I had the opportunity. The prices are reasonable, and the service is very accommodating. I had the soup, 2 tacos (one beef, one chicken) and they are very generous with the amount of meat in the taco. They even put quacamole on the tacos with no extra charge! Nobody does that! THEY DO! Did I say how fantastic the soup was? I will say it again, I don't care...THE BEST! I love chicken soup that has real pulled chicken in it like Mom used to make...not strips or chunks (which can be purchased pre-cooked). This is the real deal...like someone's Mom slow cooked a chicken all day and it fell of the bone, and they put the meat in the soup. For years we have been blasted with the message that when you aren't feeling well, have some chicken soup. Well the flu has certainly made its way around the office and just when I feel a little on the downside, I drive over to Jorge's and get their Texcoco style chicken soup. I haven't been sick yet this year despite everyone around me getting the flu. Is it because of Jorge's - I can't say, but I will say that it certainly doesn't hurt. It is a very simple dish, a good broth, chicken, some rice, some spicy sauce and topped with avocado. Adding a quesadilla to it is almost like the being home in the fall back east with some soup and a grilled cheese sandwich (but I digress). Taquitos are good and have a large helping of guacamole on them. I've had a few of the burritos and they are both delicious and rather inexpensive (which makes my budget happy). There are only a few downsides, it is small and there aren't a lot of seats but you can get everything to go as well so it isn't that big of a problem. The food does take a little while to get to you, but they are a small place and there is always a line. If you plan on taking it to go - then phone in your order. read more

yes the Mexican Soup is a standout. I had to see what all the fuss was about. Nice chicken pieces; the broth is fresh, clear and not overly mucked up; the rice is just enough; and the hunks of fresh avacado float around the top begging you to dig in and try to catch it. The place itself is very spartan...a few metal seats and tables adorn the place. At least it was clean, but by no means is the decor and setting as stellar as the food. I also had the chicken flautas and plan to grab a California Burrito next time I visit. And yes I said, the next time...so this place is on my radar the next time I'm in this fine city.
