it's located inside of a house, tons of seating and a great patio but can fill up really fast. this place isn't going to be for everyone, you have to enjoy the certain vibe of this coffee shop to like it. it's very homey but you can tell it's mostly ran/operated by college-aged students because it definitely gives off that vibe. the coffee isn't great imo, but this is the kind of place that has tons of funky & unique flavor combinations and specialty drinks (very sweet lattes). if you're a plain americano or drip coffee person, i would recommend something more low-maintenance in terms of the menu & location (parking is very limited/hard compared to a parking lot) like stellar or the coffee bar. for me, i like to come here when i have work to do & want to get out of the house but still get a homey feel where i'm working. the food is also pretty good, would recommend breakfast over lunch! read more

Love their coffee, always quick and the barista with black hair and tattoos is the bomb. She always knows my order and asks how I am and genuinely cares. I've always liked the other people working here also until recently. There is a new girl who my first time coming in was very rude, corrected me over my order that I come in and get almost everyday. I thought she might have just had a bad day. But every time I have come in since and she's here she gives the place an awkward, aggressive feeling. She's constantly talking and complaining/ cursing very loudly to friends, customers or coworkers. And kind of rude when I order. I miss my old, happy coffee shop. read more

Heard good reviews about this place: tasted good and bang for your buck. Had to try it out. First and foremost, had the house blend and it touched all notes necissary for a good cup of jo. Fit the breakfast platter too. What struck me was that they actually could cook. As opposed to other places around here that have no business cooking food. Price: honestly, it felt a little over priced. Yes the food was very good, exceptional in my opinion; but $6.50 for 2 eggs 2 bacon and some potatoes, let's be real. I've been living in San Marcos for over a month now, and have been here around once a week. The quality of the food has been pretty good, but the service is fucking atrocious. I don't care how cool you are or how many faux hippie tatts you have. You're there for the customers, and you're supposed to do your job. I have lived in Melbourne, Australia for 33 years (hipster coffee capital of the Southern Hemisphere), and I have rarely seen nonchalance as brutal as this. The first time I had an issue here was as follows : I went in with 3 friends. I had stuff to do back at the house so I got my order to-go. AT THE SAME TIME as them. My 3 friends got their orders in about 5 minutes. They were literally finished eating outside when mine came up about 20 minutes later. Interesting magical ticket issue you have going there. The second time was at lunch today, and was the catalyst for this review. My girlfriend & I ordered a reuben with an egg. About 10 minutes later (totally acceptable), the kitchen guys put it on the pass and extremely audibly said "ORDER UP". I heard this. My girlfriend heard this. One of the 2 girls working FOH just kept on counting her tips, even though we could see our lunch a foot behind her head. The other girl working, who was outside disposing of a trash bag at the time, came back in, walked RIGHT PAST our lunch, and straight to her phone which was plugged into the wall on the far side of the counter. We both watched this happen, and laughed in disbelief. She then left her phone, went into the kitchen aimlessly, came out, casually noticed our lunch that had at this point been sitting on the pass for 3 minutes... and slowly brought it over to us. Then she went straight out for a much deserved cigarette break. We gave them the benefit of a doubt during this entire spectacle, but in the end, nope - it was just plain old arrogance & ignorance. It takes a lot to get a bad review out of me, having worked in retail for 15 years and knowing that sometimes shit just happens. But this was just too bullshit silly to go unnoticed. It blew our minds. I don't care that most of our friends here seem to know all the employees. That doesn't give you the right to act so casual that you're literally not working any more. ABSURD. 3 stars off a 4 star review for this nonsense. read more

First disclaimer: I'm biased - my daughter works there and I love the owners. However, those biases aside, I love Jo's cafe. The toddy is forever perfectly to die for cold brew, the cookies and muffins are fresh made and amazing. The tacos and burritos from the kitchen are sooo tasty. As a veggie lover I die for their egg, sweet potato, and avocado (or cheddar or quest fresco) tacos. Weirdly they don't have breakfast sausage as a taco ingred (hubby's fave) but I love everything they make. If you're in the mood for a real caffeinated treat try an overdrive or a shyster. Let me start off by saying I want so, so badly to love this place. The atmosphere, it's cute, cool vibes, etc. I get what they're going for but honestly I don't see how they have so many great reviews. These other people must go in on certain days or are just blind to bullshit, I'm not sure which. We live in the neighborhood and have been here many occasions, mostly we try to always call ahead with our order so we can just get in and get out of the way and come home with our breakfast. Today I did just this, and I called at 10:50 am. She said it would be about 15 minutes but I personally already knew better so I didn't leave my home til about 20 minutes later. When I arrived I walked up to the counter and it was almost as if the order hadn't even been placed yet but I paid and added on our coffees and took a seat. I then waited over ANOTHER 30 minutes before I finally walked up to the counter to check on things. There's the girl that's always there and she's pretty nice, you can tell she does a lot that the other employees couldn't care less about doing, and not to mention the very hateful older woman who just kind of shuffles to and fro, scowling like why do you even have the audacity to give this place business, and she is about as helpful as the warm drinking water by the coffee. So as I approach the counter I asked about my food and notice there's an order sitting off to the side on the counter. The girl running the register continues to act like I do no exist and the first girl mentioned says "oh did she not call your name?" I said no she sure did not. I grabbed the food and left. My boyfriend and I opened our food at home and pretty much everything we had tasted and also looked like it had been scraped out of the bottom of a burnt and dirty skillet. We will more than likely not be back after this. We've tried too many times and all it does is almost ruin our day with every single encounter. Let me also say that we have both worked our fair share of service industry jobs, kitchens, bars, catering, etc. and we usually are extremely patient and go easy on the staff but this is just ridiculous. I understand the whole "hipster, let's pay more to look poor and chill" vibe but in the real world it's a joke. read more

Jo's is conveniently close to my sorority house and the Texas State campus, so I'm definitely a regular at this place. Coffee is great, food is great, and the people that work there are very cool. I've never had a bad experience at Jo's. Only thing I would complain about is it is more pricey than your favorite drive-thru coffee or food place, but everything is made with fresh ingredients and you get great service & free wifi. I also love to come here to study. Last thing, the owner comes in and works as well. She made my coffee and brought it to me once. I like knowing that the owners are hands on and care about their customers. read more

The coffee here is really tasty! The sandwich I ordered would've been really good - except the fried egg was raw in the middle...clear, runny liquid spilled out of it as I bit into my sandwich. I bought a pound of Jumping Mouse about a week ago and I just can't get enough of it. It is the perfect coffee. Another expert recommendation: Hibiscus Mint Iced Tea. They make it every day, there's no caffiene but Good Gracious that vitamin C does just about everything you need it to. Best for hungover brunch dates and summer afternoon enjoyment. Moreover, every single person that works at Jo's Cafe is a sweetheart. All of the cooks make fantastic tacos (and everything else too! I've had most of the menu and it is all amazing) but, on top of that, several of them are also celebrated Unicycle Football players! Talent all over the place. I can't recommend it enough. read more

Great little coffee shop near campus in an old home. It's amazing how they can produce so much good food from such a small kitchen. The atmosphere is vey laid back with a guitar hanging on the wall if you feel like playing. The cappuccino and lattes are excellent although I'd like to see them use insulated paper cups instead of styrofoam. The breakfast tacos are large and delicious. You'll feel right at home. read more

I've lived here for 5 years and didn't know about this place! It isn't advertised and tucked away on the street it's on. The Reuben and the turkey sandwich are great! You can sub the chips for a freshly made salad with their homemade honey mustard dressing. The sandwiches are huge and can easily be shared as well. This local business won't disappoint read more

The food is great and the coffee strong. And I love the equality and inclusion and progressive vibe you get from the bumper stickers and flyers. But I guess that inclusion stops with family's of babies. I had to change my baby's diaper on the floor of the bathroom. So they have high chairs and promote acceptance of every one ... but you better hope your child doesn't need a clean place to change their diaper. read more

Jo's Cafe is conveniently located near the university and has some of the best coffee in town! I am something of a coffee snob, but both their drip coffee and espresso has a full-bodied flavor, yet wasn't obnoxiously strong. The food takes a while, so make sure you're there for a leisurely lunch date, but it is well-worth it! I love their creative and fresh taco ingredients and their toasty sandwiches. Their tacos especially are a great deal. They give you one taco, but the ingredients are enough for two. I usually eat the taco, and then the rest of the ingredients with a fork. I came here to work on a class project, and I was very glad we met here. The location is very nice. It's on a corner, very clean and very appealing on the outside. Inside is very calm decor, and very hip. The staff was very friendly and fast. I ordered the Caprese panini and OMG it was sooooo good. Very flavorful and toasted just right. I also ordered the nutty irishmen and the berry hibiscus mint tea which was so refreshing and very good. The ambiance here is very nice and quiet, you can definitely meet up here for a study group or to study by yourself. Music plays but its not distracting or too loud. There is also nice patio seating outside if you want to get fresh air while you are at Jo's. I highly recommend trying to get to Jo's if you can for coffee or food:D read more

As with most places in San Marcos they close unfortunately early (Yelp said they closed at 9pm and I was told they were closing round 8pm so not sure what's up there). One of the top 3 San Marcos coffee shops. It's my go-to coffee shop on days I want a quiet, well-lit place to study or read. Their parking is on the side of a steep hill and they never have spots during rush hours (2pm-ish) but they're totally worth it and I appreciate their abundance of decaf versions as well as their turkey club that shames typical cafe food. Their staff is always charismatic and friendly and I love that they have plenty of herbal hot tea bag options. read more
