My friend recommended this place, so we went here for a late morning coffee, and at just the right time. We only had to wait behind one person and there already were a few people at the tables/bars drinking their mornin' jo. We made our order (latte, stroopwafels!, and a mimosa) and sat at the bar (all outside obviously). There were quite a few people that followed, and not many with masks; also, the tables were very close to each other (not us - we were in a fairly separated spot), and lots of dogs in a small area, so lots of close contact. I'm not sure if outdoor seating qualifies as requiring masks, or when they need to be worn, but given that the tables were very close, it seems like at least that should have been adjusted a bit. I've heard great things about Jo's. It was a relatively hot day when I went in. I was shopping around the 2nd street area and needed a cold drink. Decided to stop in and grab a quick drink. When I walked in, it was empty. There were a couple tables with one or two people but otherwise empty. The counter to order was also not attended to, so I had to wait a couple minutes which gave me time to look at the menu. I decided on an iced tea since it was a little late for caffeine. I ended up ordering the hibiscus tea - unsweetened. When I first got the tea, it was, I kid you not, full of ice. If I took out the ice, I'm sure that it would be only half a cup of actual tea. For a $3.00+ tea, that's pretty hefty. The tea itself wasn't the most flavorful, and I had to add some honey and sugar in order to make it taste better. Holy. HOLY. Best veggie burger I've ever had. Wtf. My mind was blown. A coworker recommended it to me, and y'all my life has been changed. I didn't know I could love a veggie burger this much. I may be overhyping it, but I am a person who loves meat and great burgers. I very rarely venture off-meat when eating a burger and even then, the last non-meat burger I ate was the impossible burger. Which is supposed to mimic meat. Let me tell you...this veggie burger is FULL of flavor. My coworker advised against adding mayo, but mayo is my fav condiment so I couldn't go without it. I don't regret my decision. The mayo added just the right flavor imo, and damn, this burger is big. I was stuffed. The fries are good. Thick cut and just crispy enough on the outside and retained a ton of heat on the inside. Go my order to-go and the meal stayed warm during my 15 min drive to my destination. Service could've been faster, but that may have been due to not enough people working the front end. Coffee at Jo's is very good. We all know that. I had heard the burgers were good but I don't think I have had one before. I would remember. Look at the picture. A big, juicy, perfectly-cooked, beautifully dressed burger. Swiss cheese, bacon and mushrooms. It was excellent. Full of flavor, crispy fresh lettuce and tomato, a bun that adds flavor but does not overpower, perfectly cooked mushroom, and not too greasy. Just great. Not great at all. I ordered an Americano, which was above average. My friend got the less sweet Iced Turbo (I believe it's called the Belgian Bomber) which was extremely sweet. Can't imagine how sweet the Ice Turbo is. Since the Belgian Bomber is pre-made you can't substitute for a non-dairy option, so no oat milk, almond milk, etc. Other standard specialty drinks (americano, cappuccino, latte) can be ordered with alternative milk. They run out of their tacos fast (which by the way are also pre-made, so they come in foil wrap, they're not made upon ordering), so I wasn't able to try some of their popular ones. The bean and cheese (black beans) was not bad. We also got another breakfast taco with bacon egg and cheese. So-so, but nothing to write home about. Also, each taco is $4, and they're small so it's recommended you get two. Can easily spend $10-12 on breakfast, which is a bit pricey considering the food and coffee is just average. Salsas were okay. On the plus side, they do have a really nice seating area with an overhang (in case it is raining which it was in our instance). Plenty of seating, and if you care about your Instagram feed, you can get that silly picture of the "i love you so much," text. Overall, I wouldn't come back here. read more

It turned 12 as I was ordering food and they bluntly stated that we could not order breakfast past 12. I understand restaurant rules but I will never understand being rude to customers. Came on a Wednesday late in the morning like 1045am and had the house specialty iced coffee and an iced chai latte. Really liked the chai! My fiance had the breakfast burrito add bacon, which he liked, and I had the turkey sandwich but subbed the grain bread for sourdough bun. OMG, the sourdough bun was so soft and sweet--just delish! Dude, I cannot speak. I've lost my voice. Speechless AND redundant cause the espresso they've got here is so bold and delicious, I'm lost for words. The breakfast tacos were very good. For once, spicy was actually spicy. Got the roasted chili taco and build your own (chorizo, potato, egg) and it was pretty good. Coffee - ordered their summer special which was a blackberry honey latte. I didn't care much for it. Watered down and tasted like it was trying to do too much. Here's the problem with Jo's: I want to like it. Really, I do. That's why every few months I give it a try. And each time, it disappoints me. The issues other reviewers have shared are spot on: the service is beyond slow and the staff treats you with a general feeling of contempt. And while the food is good (their burger rates in my top 5 for Austin), it doesn't justify the exorbitant prices - which feel even higher because the service is so terrible. The pros: 1. The food, like I said, is good - just be prepared to pay too much and wait too long for it. 2. Jo's also deserves kudos for their community events - they host drag queen bingo, and viewing parties for RuPaul's Drag Race and other premium cable shows like GOT and Dexter. This has always been one of my favorite spots when visiting Austin in fact we go out of our way to search for parking and wait in line. We haven't been in a few years but I was craving some of their delicious steel cut oatmeal... I have ALWAYS been a fan of Jo's Coffee, not just the establishment but their actual coffee. I've been going to its original location on Congress close to 18 years and have never been disappointed with their fare. The downtown location is just as good but it is an indoor restaurant with a full menu. The breakfast tacos are great and delicious, but I really come here for the coffee. It has a very unique taste due to its roasting standards, and although the roasters have changed the flavor is still the same. The Iced Turbo is probably the originator of the craze before the big Seattle conglomerate started doing it. It's summer. I sought out a place with wireless and outlets to catch up on some studying because sometimes Starbucks and I need some time away from one another (y'all can stop hating, it's reliable and everywhere, all right?!). A quick Yelp search yielded this place and it seemed pretty legit . . . Drip coffee is around $2 and unlimited refills, which is as fancy as I get lately. Also this being Austin, thank you Jo's for offering a soy milk thermos with the various cow milks. You usually have to specifically request soy from the barrister at other places and worst yet, sometimes pay a nominal $.50-ish fee for a mere splash of the stuff. Vegan options are a plenty (more so if you're vegetarian) - wheat roast, veggie chili, veggie dogs, and a whole hoard of others. I've only sampled the fries twice, because there's nothing more well-rounded than fries and coffee to start off your day. The first time they were a bit soggy, the second time - delightfully seasoned, crispy and fresh from the fryer. A rather generous portion as well for around $2 - mmm healthy! I was informed the veggie dog is pretty tasty as well from a reliable source. As far as noise volume - well it's certainly not the quietest here. I assume this can be mostly explained by the high ceilings, bustling lunch and in-and-out crowds. hence not the perfect five stars. Bring earbuds if you require concentration, but the music selection is usually pretty stellar. I'd have to say the staff is pretty rocking. I think they are used to people who linger for hours on end, leaching off their wifi for study or work purposes, so they don't harass you in the least. Requested services or orders are fulfilled quickly and without any sass. So yeah, highly recommend this place. WIN! read more

Coffee wasn't acidic and service was quick. My friend ordered the Belgian Bomber -- very tasty, sweet, and original. There was plenty of seating inside when we came Sunday morning. I was in Austin for a quick weekend, but I managed to visit Jo's twice in just two days. Located conveniently close to the W downtown, it was easy to walk over one morning for breakfast and the next morning for coffee... My first visit, I had an egg white omelette and shared a large plate of their whole wheat pancakes with the others in my group. Both were delicious. And my party was lucky enough to score a large table despite the place being pretty crowded. The next morning, I met a friend for coffee. I went for a cappucino and it gave me just the caffeine buzz I needed! The service isn't the speediest, but I'm still a huge fan. Their bathroom is clean too, which isn't always the case with coffee shops, so extra points for Jo's. If I lived in Austin, I'd likely be a regular here. read more

There is a section that says "Plates" which usually designates that each item comes with hash browns or fruit or something, but that's not the case. There is no breeze at their outside patio. I think because both sides buildings are too tall and blocked the wind. The bacon was also good, albeit a bit bland. The walk-up service was efficient and practical. My friend had the iced Belgium Bomber, which she said was refreshing and delicious.
