I found this place randomly while walking downtown with friends during SXSW. It was pretty chilly outside, so we decided to make a quick pit stop for some nice warm coffee. There was a long line inside, but there were two little windows outside convenient for placing to go orders. I ordered a plain latte and an Iced Turbo (I know I came in for warmth.. but the Iced Turbo was calling my name!). The Iced Turbo came out immediately, and I really enjoyed it! It was very sweet, which was perfect for my sweet tooth. It contained coffee, espresso, hazelnut, chocolate, and cream. The latte came out 10~ minutes later, and I enjoyed it also. For seating, there was a patio area in front with bar stool seating and table seating which were convenient while we waited for our drink orders to come out. It was definitely a good place to people watch and socialize. Overall, I really enjoyed the coffee and would definitely come back to try their food menu items next time! read more

I usually drop by Jo's for quick tea or live oak as I walk downtown taking pictures. Sometimes I try to study on the patio, but I quickly find myself distracted with the scenery and interesting people that pass by to get anything productive done. Finally tried the grilled cheese, and yes it's pretty darn good. Grilled sourdough with creamy havarti cheese, along with a kick from cheddar and swiss... and a huge helping of herbed mayo or "aioli" which is either a really really good or bad thing depending on who you are. Live oak 4 bucks, and a small-ish sandwich with no sides for 6.50, worth the price? Considering that you're just in for a tasty bite, and not looking for a huge meal. And that you're dining in what I consider the coolest part of downtown, then yeah it's definitely worth it. read more

Supposedly there's a "spicy" sauce on it but I didn't taste anything all that spicy. The coffee was EH. I ordered a large iced cold brew and wasn't all that impressed. However, my friend ordered the iced tea and was very pleased. Downtown Jo's is a order first, take a number, have a seat (or leave) type of joint. The staff brings your order right to you. Came here just for the iced turbo but ended up getting the mushroom patty melt too. It's definitely not worth the $10.50 I paid. Shouldn't a patty melt be melted? I opened my sandwich to find a whole slice of unmelted cheese slathered with mayo. This was pretty much a hamburger on toast with a few mushrooms. 4/10 would not eat here again. Easy to walk to, but hard to park. Free Wifi. Food - DELICIOUS. The Veggie Chili Dog has the sweet Hawaiian type bread, but it is very messy. The Grilled Cheese is like a cheesy party in your mouth with melted havarti, swiss & cheddar. The Vegetarian BBQ was also good, but a little too sweet for my taste. Ambiance - Cute downtown location. The South Congress spot is more my style. Perhaps I am nostalgic about it because of the good times I've spent there with friends. The Downtown location is not your classic Austin Jo's experience, but something its own. The development of downtown has driven off many of the classic Austin spots that helped define Austin as a weird, or at the very least bohemian, sort of town. Anyone remember the cinnamon coffee at Las Manitas? So now we have the tony and the antiseptic. A true Austin vibe has been drained away, the brambles and overgrowth of non-conformity have been cut back, and the whole place has come to feel very much like a generic downtown in any American city. Jo's downtown location inside has preserved a bit of the old Austin feel. Independent. Understated. Clean. Not for the Biff-and-Buffy crowd. The coffee is quite good. The breakfast tacos -- the potato, egg and cheese is the best of them - are the size of a three egg omelet wrapped in a thin flour tortilla for easy, grease free stuffing of said omelet in your face. One taco is enough at the downtown location. Two will be required at the South Congress shop. The have the craziest, most delicious cinnamon rolls. (Yes, they are from Quack's . . . but no matter.) You should try one of them. They are chewy to the tooth but tender inside and coated with a layer of cinnamon and sugar. If you squint your eyes, you can pretend that the tony boutiques across the street aren't there, that time and progress have not swept away a lot Austin character. We stopped coming here a year or so ago because the food and customer service had declined so much, but we had a coupon for a free burger/sandwich (that I won at an event here) and were going to an event around the corner, so we stopped in to see if anything had improved. Quite the opposite, unfortunately. First off, the guy taking orders at the counter was very clearly on a mind altering substance and kept, I'm not kidding, starring off while we tried to talk to him, to the point that I had to call his attention back several times. The place was slow and we were the only ones in line to order, so who knows what kept stealing his attention. Ordering was extremely awkward and took a lot of effort. For a veggie bbq sandwich, a regular bbq sandwich, fries, and 2 drinks from the fountain. Not a difficult order. They brought out the veggie burger and took away our number. 10 minutes later a waitress was wandering around with a basket. I asked if it was mine and she said "it's for 27." I said that had been our number so she handed it to me. It was a bacon cheeseburger, so I walked up to the counter and told another woman that I'd gotten the wrong item. She just stared at me. Thinking she hadn't heard, I repeated myself. Then she rudely said, "um, well, I'm busy making an espresso right now, so I'll have someone take care of it." I sat down and a few minutes later another person came and swiped the burger off the table. A few minutes after that the espresso-maker slid a salad in front of me and mumbled something about the wait as she turned away. I guess that was on the house as an apology? My "pulled" pork bbq sandwich came a few minutes later. It was a cut of meat, un-pulled, on a bed of sliced cabbage. No bbq sauce, no vinegar or dressing on the "slaw." Then we noticed the vegan sandwich didn't either. I guess because we used a coupon, our food doesn't come with dressings or flavor? The fries were good, at least. What used to be a cute local hangout for us is now just a sad reminent. The staff must be extremely underpaid for the atmosphere and food to be so bland. I guess the owner is too busy chumming it up with celebs at her hotels to pay attention to quality control at Jo's. What a shame. read more

Stumbled onto this place on the way somewhere else & was very pleasantly surprised. I ordered a vanilla latte & The Cubano; the latte was hot as was the spicy brown mustard on the pork sandwich. Toasted sweet bun was soft & delicious but slightly over-sized for the meat. My hubby had a tea (no sweet tea; scandal!) and a mushroom burger & fries. Now with this gem, the bun was perfection. The herbed dressing made this now standard menu item something to write about. I was tempted to order another latte to go, but my waistline is thankful I chose a bottle of water before continuing our stroll around the beautiful Capitol of the greatest state in the union. We missed actual breakfast by about 15 minutes so our only options were lunch or the breakfast Sandwich. The sando was good but super messy (not a bad thing). Casual spot, decent coffee, easy place to post up and work in a booth if you need to. Breakfast menu looks way better than the lunch menu. read more

Ordered a hamburger but they gave us the poblano chicken burger instead. It was good, just not what we had ordered. We also ordered the turkey sandwich with sprouts, avocado and spicy mayo. It was very good but BEWARE that spicy mayo has a lot of kick to it! Would've gave them a 5 star review but they got the order wrong. Also, we were looking forward to the breakfast menu but got there at 1 instead of 12 so remember that breakfast ends at noon on weekends and 11am on weekdays. P.S. Parking around the area is horrible but if you're from or live in Austin, you probably already know that. If you're visiting, leave about 30 minutes in your schedule to find parking. This was actually my first time ever being to a Jo's (blasphemous, I know)! It was crowded for a Thursday at 10:30am, but when you're a well established Austin joint, I guess that's to be expected. The wait was not long at all and I was greeted with a warm smile and offered to get my latte going before a few others ahead of me in line - that was really nice of them! I ended up ordering their Fall Spiced Latte and it was delicious ! I take a spin class right around the corner from here and I'll definitely be back! I want so badly to give this place at least four, but I just can't! The food is good and I think they make the best iced vanilla latte in Austin...BUT the it takes f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to get your food. Don't come here when you're hungry, come here when you're almost hungry, so that by the time you are hungry, your food will be ready! The employees are sometimes friendly depending on how busy they are (but they're usually always busy) and the food is "pretty good." It's nothing to write home about. I will say they're pancakes are really good. I think the food is a little pricey for just being okay. If you choose to dine outside, do your fellow man a favor and clean up your own table. No one wants to clean up your mess after a hundred birds just picked at your leftovers. They usually leave a cart outside to dump dishes in - use it. read more

However, she could have started with a Hi how are you, how can I help you. She didn't. I forgot to order a drink with my breakfast and asked if they had ice water, she pointed to the other end and said the have a water station. It was room temperature. Being in Austin where it close to the temp of the sun today, I would think she would be a little more accommodating. The best thing about this establishment is the inside atmosphere and decor which is nostalgic and hip all at once. You have to order at the register and then go sit. Because of the floodwater contamination issue we couldn't have any espresso drinks. So I got their regular coffee which tasted ok. Their cream pitcher was basically empty. The hub got iced tea which was fine. They have a bunch of swag you can buy but since we aren't from Austin we weren't convinced that it would be recognizable to buy our omiyage from here. They do have a dog day where they bring adoptable pets every Sunday so I give them props for that. I ended up tossing my coffee - I guess I really wanted espresso so it just wasn't hitting the spot. Also it was $6 for a cup of regular coffee and an iced tea. read more

This is a nice little coffee spot with a full breakfast menu. It is kid and dog friendly. They have a nice patio outside. We came here for morning brunch. You order inside and get a number.They offer omelette with your choice of what you want inside. I had my omelette with ham, mushroom, spinach, and cheddar. Potatoes on the side and a bagel. You could also have toast if you wish. The butter with the bagel comes with a small amount of strawberry jam swirled in. This was a nice little touch. We sat outside. It was nice but there were a lot of birds pooping around us and I was a bit worried some droppings may end up in my plate! None did thankfully. The coffe was okay. A bit weak. The food was good and I would go back again. Nice little spot downtown. They also gave us some Jo's stickers for the kids. read more

The menu is small, but the location is great for people watching and the wait staff and bartenders are always friendly and willing to top off your wine glass. I came in here cause it was raining and needed a place to wait for it to stop. I ordered a iced turbo and it was ready very quickly, so I'm not sure if it is sitting there pre-made and poured to order? It was however very good and reminded me of a Starbucks beverage. They had a trivia game night going on that I didn't participate in but seemed really difficult. I think those playing were having fun. You could win prizes though which was cool. I didn't order food but looking at what others did get made me tempted. Unfortunately I was not hungry at the time. Nice cafe with ample seating, large menu, and good coffee. read more

I am a Jo's groupie through and through! I love this place and everything about it. The Belgian Bomber is the most delicious iced coffee (next to the Iced Turbo, which is its "full strength" cousin) that's not TOO sweet, but still hits the spot. For breakfast, the migas taco is always fresh and delicious and for lunch I love the Greek salad, which is overflowing with fresh ingredients and lettuce you know was chopped 5 minutes before serving it to you. I love how they mix the dressing on the salad already (though I am sure you can request it on the side). The atmosphere is fun and cool, with bar seating, tables, and an outside patio. Went here for breakfast because it was in walking distance from my hotel. Colleagues have great reviews because they felt that the coffee was better here than many other places downtown. The ambiance is really cool. It feels trendy and informal, and also very clean. You walk in and order at the counter and then food is brought to your table. The oatmeal and granola looked amazing- def getting that when I go back tomorrow. I had an egg white taco with bacon and spinach- very good as well. Good iced coffee too. Just found out about Jo's downtown location.... and LOVE IT!!! After the final night of ACL-2015, my wife and I woke up late in search of a breakfast spot. We were told by the folks at the 'W' Hotel that Jo's had a few things. I ordered the spicy bacon sandwich which is an excellent sandwich I recommend. It has thick pieces of spicy bacon, fried egg, avocado with a spicy sauce all on a sweet bun!!! I also got there Autumn Late that was really excellent as well. On our recent visit to Austin, we were looking for a good place to eat breakfast and Jo's Hot coffee Good Food was recommended to us by a friend. The outdoor seating was very nice so this was a big plus as we love to eat outside! The line was fairly long but went by quickly. I ordered the huevos rancheros which the flavor was good, however when it came out was cold, so this was disappointing. The fried corn tortilla was still nice and crispy and the salsa tasted fresh.
