Utterly horrific. Never again. Dropped a winter coat and 2 pairs of pants off in March 2022. Spent the next *7 months* going back and forth with the tailor on when I can pick them up. No joke, 33 phone calls back and forth. I picked them up today -- December 3, 2022 -- and they aren't complete. To boot, The person working the shop today could not communicate in English. I was looking for a no-frills, inexpensive and quick tailor in the area for a small job (a cut off tag from my shirt accidentally ripped a part of the shirt by the seam). I went to Joseph Tailor based on the good reviews from Google Maps and proximity/convenience of where I was. The shop is located in "mini mall" of suites, like doctor's offices, and one floor up. The man is very straight forward and candid (traditional Italian culture), and, from the couple of times I've been there so far, quick and does solid, good work. He took me in pretty much right away, and when the quick closing up of the seam was completed a minute or two later, he only asked for whatever I wanted to give as a tip. Very fair to me, especially given the area he's located in. I plan to return to this tailor for any and all related jobs (including anything more complex) that I need done, based on the price, quality of work, and efficiency. The only minor issue to me was that I arrived right at 9am when they're supposed to be opened, to accommodate my work schedule, but no one was there until around 9:15. read more

Joseph is a quality guy who runs a very good business in a great area. He charges very fair prices ($10/shirt, $14/pants) and has a friendly attitude, and his shop is very nice. I found Joseph on Yelp, and have to admit I was slightly skeptical based on the mostly good, some great, some not-so-great reviews. I decided to split my clothes between him and Perry, another tailor nearby. I brought Joseph a shirt to be taken in and a pair of pants that needed to be hemmed. He gave me unsolicited (but appreciated) advice in typical Italian tailor fashion, and told me to come back in a week. Did exactly that and the results were perfect. I wish i could rate it lower. I've brought many things to Joseph over years. Ive always forgiven his consistent lateness and learned to factor that into my trips downtown, because he's a bit of a character and at one point offered great tailoring. My most recent experience was quite different. I brought in a few jackets that fit perfectly, but need to have the sleeves taken up a couple inches. He suggested raising it from the shoulder to preserve the original sleeve. When i came to pick it up (the first time) instead of raising it one inch, he raised it about 7 and refused to acknowledge it even looked bad. I then left it for him to fix, came back and it was the same. Left it a third time and he tried to remove fabric form other parts of the jacket to make up for his initial mistake which he still refuses to acknowledge. Three other tailors were shocked by how bad it was. Because he cut the fabric on the first go, the $4000 jacket is ruined. He did something similar to another $2000 jacket and to a third $900 jacket. Not sure what has happened to his work but he has lost his touch and worse is unwilling to acknowledge his mistake--see photos below for the worst of them. read more

Like the previous Yelpers who posted here, I also was referred here by Century 21 and brought two suits over for alterations. Unfortunately, there aren't many reviews for great tailors on Yelp so take heed. The shop is a single room with plenty of orders hanging on racks. The staff is nice and friendly, but undoubtedly, they are overwhelmed by the traffic from C21 which brings me to my low rating. They clearly are cutting corners and are scraping by to meet expectations. I was also promised a delivery time of a few days, but having read the earlier reviews, gave them an extra two days to get the job done right. When I arrived for pickup, the staff was welcoming as usual, but the work was just subpar. Tailors are supposed to fix clothes so they fit BETTER on you, not worse. Basically, the work was shoddy and seemed rushed. Where my slacks were to be taken in, new stitching was added while original stitching was left in place leaving them to bunch and not drape properly. The same went for my jacket where sides weren't taken in as much as originally marked and, like Noel C., I still had the roll of fabric on my upper back. The gentleman who helped me with my suit, presumably the owner, told me that they would make the adjustments, which meant additional days. He remarked that I was focusing on the "details," as in these are minor details. Not for nothing, but when it comes to tailoring I'd expect that it's ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS. Two weeks, all in, and I had to take my suits to another tailor to rectify. Why didn't I just go back and demand new alterations? Well, if you've been burned twice, why go for three? read more

Long story short: do not bring expensive stuff here. Recommended by a friend, I brought here two brand new suits. Different modifications for each one as they were different brands. Let's put aside the fact that, being disorganized, no deadline has ever been hit, with this process needing 5 times for me to be able to pick up one suit. They ended up modifying exactly the same way both suits, resulting in ruining completely one of them. After taking full accountability Joseph claimed it could fix it. The discomfort was already huge for me, trying on a suit I saw on me only one time at the store, now irremediably ruined. Nonetheless I agreed on giving a second chance for him to fix it. After several other visits, politely giving him time to put a remedy on it, the result was a semi fixed suit extremely tight on both sleeves (only part he could not save fabric for). I did not have the heart to ask a reimbursement for the full price being them a mom and pop store, I asked to have my money back at least for the modifications of the other suit since this one was ruined. Needless to say (as I read also from other reviews) excuses like "no it looks good trust me it is the style" or lies like "we did not touch the sleeves, it was already tight" were the only defense Joseph had. I decided to leave, with a suit I won't be able to wear, after spending money on a tailor that was not honest. Everyone makes mistakes, but trying to swipe them under an imaginary rug will never be the answer. read more

Joseph's Tailor Shop is a true tailor in every sense of the word. For one Joseph is Italian, and you get the full experience of a tailor. He talks to you, he measures you, he makes jokes, and he waves his hands when he speaks like a true Italian. It's awesome. It was here I was introduced into the dapper world of gentlemen. I haven't been to many tailor shops, but from what I've read the customer service here is stellar. He gives reasonable time frames for completion and his prices are competitive and fair. Once, there was an imperfection in having a blazer taken in, and he corrected it for me for free. In the course of planning for my recent wedding, I checked off a few items on my bucket list, one of which was to buy a fancy Italian suit. Alas, I still haven't achieved my bucket list goal of becoming a millionaire, but thankfully there was Century 21. I ended up getting a $1500 suit for less than $500. Joseph Tailor Shop is next door to Century 21. When it's open, there'll be a little placard set up outside the door inviting people to go up. You make your way up to the fourth floor. In a world where it seems all the old-school small businesses from hardware stores to flower shops are being taken over by nameless, faceless conglomerates, walking into Joseph Tailor Shop was like walking into a wonderful, nostalgic past. In the corner there's an ironing board with an authentic old-school iron that they use to press clothes (I'm talking one without a power cord). And this isn't a kitschy prop--Joseph still does his tailoring the old-fashioned way, which for my money is by far the best way. Joseph could not have been nicer to my best man and me as we brought our suits in. I'd had suits altered by department stores before, which always seem to make me feel like I'm in an assembly line. Joseph was friendly, warm, and had a wonderful sense of humor and a wonderful zest for life that only could come out of Italy. He had me stand on a platform, did some measurements, did some stuff with chalk and pins, and that was it. I came back on the date he promised to deliver my suit, and he had it ready for me. He had me try it on. I was amazed at how good it looked, felt, and fit. He pointed out some little details he'd done I would never have thought of which really showed his many, many years of expertise. I don't know tailoring terms, but bottom line everything from the sides of the suit to the shoulders to the pants were done to absolute perfection. As he showed me the details, he spoke with obvious pride in his work. Like I wrote in another review about Peter Luger steaks, someone who doesn't appreciate fine craftsmanship might not appreciate what a very good deal they're getting with Joseph. As for me, I was glad I went to him. During my wedding I even got compliments on how great it looked. Joseph is a throwback to how business used to be done, and how I wish it were still done. Mistakes and rude customer service. I bought two suits at Century 21 and was sent next door to Joseph Tailor for alterations. In our first meeting, Joseph seemed pleasant and was friendly. However, he did not do a good job on the back of one of the sports coats -- leaving it bunchy and caved in. He also shortened the sleeves on the same coat too far. As I was picking up the suit a second time, Joseph was short with me and demonstrated to his store full of people that he couldn't care less how the jacket looked on me. I told him I didn't appreciate his attitude and that I was back because he had made mistakes. He told me that I was a Century 21 customer and if I wanted more service, I'd have to come back with a ticket from Century 21. He had to make a living somehow. Well, how about making a living by doing a good job and treating your customers with respect? New York is full of tailors, I'm not sure why I'd ever go back to someone who did such a below average job and who treated me so rudely. read more

This place was referred to me by a salesperson at Century 21 right next door. I guess there is some kind of kickback going on. The alterations are okay, pretty standard stuff. I've only asked for hems. The only problem is that his work is always late. If he says it will be done on Tuesday, don't count on it. It will probably be done a few days later, and that is only if you visit and reminded him that you're still waiting. Otherwise, he is very amiable and friendly.
