The whole process for haircut and balayage took 2.5 hours. I have been to other hairdresser and it would take twice as long and I end up with over processed hair that I'm not 100% happy with. I can not believe I have never written a review for Joe! In a nutshell, he is a kind and fun hairstylist with a deep knowledge of his craft and an intrinsic understanding of what will work for his clients. I was lucky enough to find Joe through Groupon in 2016 or 2017 and I haven't looked back! This summer, he also did my hair for my wedding, which was a fun full-circle event and he did a FANTASTIC job. First, about his general hairstyling: The first time I went in to see Joe, I came for balayage and a haircut. Joe did a gorgeous cut and hand balayage which looked completely natural for the full six months between appointments (and I could have gone longer). He looked at me, listened to what I wanted, made suggestions and collaborated, and then gave me the best cut and color ever! I recommend him to everyone, and I think he is the best! It also says a lot when you can spend hours chatting with someone the first time and have it feel natural and easy and fun. He is a truly good person and a wizard with hair! For wedding styling: I asked Joe if he would be willing to do my hair for my wedding, knowing this is not his specific area of expertise. He asked me if I was sure and I was! I wanted a hairstyle that was low-key and easy, but very me. I ended up doing a style based on Maria Menounos' Oscar 2014 look - two french braids that lead to a braided bun, with wisps of hair pulled out on the front and sides. I showed Joe the photos of my inspiration, and he did a trial which I LOVED - he just totally got what I was looking for and was willing to work with me to make sure it was perfect. He also did half up- half down hairstyles for three others in my wedding party and they all looked gorgeous. I am so lucky to know Joe and to have him as both my regular and now wedding hair stylist. Joe is awesome! I got a cut and balayage here after seeing it on Groupon. I recommend you buy it now, since he mentioned he's on the tail end of the deal. ~$160 for balayage and cut? You can't beat that! The studio is located in a cute little building, very conveniently located to Montgomery bart station. I would recommend taking bart if you live further, since parking in this area is a pain. Joe was really patient and knew what he was doing, and very caring. Asked if I wanted water, how the water temperature was, etc. I got a little nervous since the bleach was in for a while, but he noted that he used a slow developer since he didn't know how my hair would react, and it turned out the color I wanted. I needed to blend my line of demarkation from previous dyes, and it looks SO much better now. (See before and after pics!). My hair did turn out a little orangey but I think it was already orangey before, so not his fault. Some toning/blue/purple shampoo should hopefully help! It was definitely a little hard to get an appointment, and he is very busy so be patient! He might need a few texts from you to get back to you, but he will. read more

I had a great experience here. Let me begin by saying that after a hair mishap a year or so ago when I asked for a balayage ombré and got 90s highlights (AND paid 400+ for it and the salon refused to fix it), I had very little trust left. It took a lot of courage and research for me to book an appointment with Joseph - and I'm glad I did. First of all, you'll be spending many hours in the chair, so it helps that Joseph is super chill and easy to talk to. Second, he respects your decision and will consult with you about your desired final result. Finally, well, he's great! He's young but has been cutting hair for more years than I can comprehend how so he's experienced and versatile. I initially wanted a lob and balayage. I ended up chickening out and getting a long lob (long long bob anyone? Lol) and it was all thanks to Joseph's handiwork. He knew the general direction of what I wanted (a more blunt cut with no layers) and delivered. The color was good too, an ashy blonde that took advantage of my previously growing out highlights. My initial qualms about him were over the photos here and on his other social media. Most of the customer photos were super old, so I think he can do better than what you see online. My other qualm is about the products he uses to bleach and tone - didn't really pay attention when he was mixing but I don't think he uses olaplex or any bond builders but I could be wrong. I'd like to see him incorporate that into the future. EDIT: I'm a fool of course he uses olaplex 10/10. All in all, check him out, I don't think you'll regret it. This review is waaaay over due! I've been going to Joseph for the last 4-5 years. He can practically style my hair exactly how I like it with his eyes closed. But even after I first started going to him, I would show him pictures and give him some direction on what I wanted, and he actually listened. If you say you want to cut off two inches, he'll make sure you mean two inches, because usually, you're only ready to cut 1.5 inches I typically go for long layers with a natural highlight that looks great on day 1 and day 100. (For the record, I have long, dark, Indian hair). I'm sooo glad my mom found Joseph many years ago because he's my go to guy now too. I highly recommend him for all your hair needs! Ps. I called initially to book an appointment but did not get any response so I texted Joseph instead and was able to book my appointment thru text. The place is in downtown, beside the ritz carlton residences, and is easily accessible from bart (powel/montgomery). Don't make the same mistake I did driving and ended up having to pay a fortune for parking. You'll need to ring Joseph up once you get there to be able to be let in through the door (weekends only i assume?) Joseph was really friendly and offered drinks when i got there. Amazing balayage from Joe! Since having a horrendous experience a couple of years ago, I've been reluctant to try new hairstylists other than my go-to in LA. Jo and I become friends after a few visits, and it's been 2 great years since I started having him take care of my locks. The images I have posted are the transitions within the past couple of years. What he had done for me is to always help me transition into different colors and lengths. He is very considerate of his client's budget and situation, so you don't have to worry about walking out of there feeling like you've been depleted. Jo is an artist, not a salesperson. Now, to address a few things I see repeatingly on the yelp review: As a small business owner/designer who manages his own schedule and business, he doesn't have the time to answer every single call and text within 3 minutes. That's just how people keep themselves sustainable in this business. And truly, any good designer in SF would make you wait about 2-3 months before first visit. So ladies, be patient! I waited 2 months the first time I visited him as well. It wasn't until we started building a rapport then I was able to schedule him within a short time frame. However I still work around his busy schedule so he wouldn't be too burned out. He is very personable, sincere and honest. Long overdue review, but I love how my hair turned out! First, Joseph is very busy and always has a packed schedule! I texted him asking for an appointment and was booked all of October, and so we set up an appointment in November. Joseph takes sometime to text you back but he eventually will! He's really flexible and accommodates your schedule. Fast forward to the day we did my hair, Joseph's studio is located in the financial district! Very close to the bart station. When you first get there, you enter this old looking building. It was locked when I got there but luckily someone was exiting out the building. Then you make your way up the elevator to his floor and his studio is at the very end of the hallway! His studio is small but yet cozy :) As I sat down, Joseph asked me specifically what I wanted to do with my hair and I had an idea of what I wanted but wasn't so sure. Joseph really explained to me what would look good on me and how he would go about my hair and I loved his idea so we went with it! I was at the salon for about 5-7 hours but Joseph was super chill and always starting a conversation :) The end results was A M A Z I N G. I was searching on Groupon for a balayage + haircut and I stumbled on Joseph's salon. The reviews were amazing so I decided to try it out. Scheduling the appointment was super easy online. He also called in person to confirm the appt. I came in with damaged and brassy asian hair hoping to fix this problem. He bleached once and toned twice. We also added Olaplex to the service. Olaplex made my hair incredibly soft and protected my hair from getting more damaged. He spent a whopping 4 hours on my hair. We did a lob and blonde balayage highlights. Joseph worked effectively and knew what he was doing. The salon is absolutely beautiful and is in a prime location. The moment I stepped in, I felt welcomed and comfortable. Voice-mail is available but texting is best & most prompt. I told him to let me know if anything opened up anytime before then and he said he would, but (understandably) nothing opened up before my appmt. Location: Beyond accessible by Montgomery MUNI/BART, and located on the 2nd floor of the building right next to Ginto. I would highly discourage driving/parking. The Groupon: Balayage & cut (regularly $230 but Groupon was $125) - don't recall if it included a blowout or not but he was beyond nice and did that for me too. I communicated my color preferences (burgundy balayage on black hair & very modest trim/addition of a few layers) ahead of time, so he was set by the time I arrived. Time: I had a 5:30pm appointment and walked out closer to 8:30pm. The results: Fabulous, stunning, sexy, sleek, elegant, and oh so freaking professional.
