Once a frequent stop for myself and the better half as an Outback, this newly opened Mexican fiesta that trancends the other options in the area, has unleashed a potential addiction. You want flavor? This place has it! Gluten-free or not, there are a lot of options on the menu that will make your tonsils tingle with fervor. This salsa is the bomb-ski. It's fresh, balanced, and replinished without question. Grab some to go on your way out. The chips are in the cast, too. Thin, crispy, and served warm they make a superb compliment to the garden salsa. The food is solid-- from fish, chicken, and classic takes on Mexican grub one can't go wrong. At least I haven't yet. What I love the most is you don't have to leave with a 10 pound burrito in your stomach. They have entrees that are light and still deliver. Ambiance is fresh, clean, and staffed with a concious crew that is clearly proud of their place of employment. Decent outdoor patio- but, don't anticipate a view. However, there are bubbly fountains and a competition grade garden that grows the needed veggies that make for a five star salsa. Glad Jose decided to land on the Northshore. After my third visit thus far, I can't complain, but throw a recommendation out to anyone looking for Mexican while in the area. read more

Recommended by a co-worker, this place is a luxury for lunch. The few times I sat in for dinner, it's always been a huge disappointment. Jose's is a comfortable, perhaps slightly trendy Mexican restaurant located right off the freeway where Fox Point, Brown Deer, and Bayside meet. Parking is incredibly plentiful. The decor is perhaps a bit strange, it feels a bit like a cabin, lots of furniture and surfaces made with visible wood and lumber, but colorful and bright. It's the first time I've been in a Mexican place that decorates like so. I've sat in with coworkers for lunch, up to a party of four people, and lunch service is always phenomenal. Service is prompt, and they are always looking to top off your beverage or your chips and salsa. The food is good too, plus healthy portions of beans and rice with your entree. There is a lunch menu; some of the entrees don't appear on the regular menu. My current lunch favorite is the fried chicken with cream of jalapeno sauce... a steal for lunch for less than 10 dollars. Freshly fried, crisply breaded bits of tender, juicy chicken, covered in a heavy, spicy cream sauce that smacks of cheese and jalapeno. I made use of the leftover sauce for my rice, also. Based purely on my lunches there, the place gets five stars. It might not be incredibly authentic or the best value around, but it's a pleasant and quick experience. However, based purely on dinner experiences, the place would barely manage two stars. I've been twice for dinner service, and the waitstaff takes 10-15 minutes to check in for your order (if you're seated in a reasonable time frame). I've sat with empty drinks and chips, and staff are often walking past and serving other tables while ignoring mine. Nothing is refilled (soda or chips or salsa), food takes way too long (despite still being pretty good), and we get "pushed out" (plates taken immediately after finishing food and waitstaff mentioning they'll bring the check). You must intercept your waiter for service. It seems understaffed during dinner service, which doesn't make much sense, there's always many more people during dinner than lunch. Needless to say, I will likely never return for dinner unless it is take out. I'll continue to come back for lunch if it remains excellent. Oh, and never order the "stacked enchilada." Horrible menu item. It's an atrocity that I can't describe. read more

We arrived about 7:45pm and was told it was a 30-40 minute wait for a table, but we could be immediately seated and order at the bar which we chose. The bartender greeted us, got us drinks and said she'd be back with menus. After 25 minutes with no menus we ordered online and at that time, she dropped menus and came back 5 minutes later and asked if we wanted to order food. We told her we ordered online and would wait for our food. After seeing multiple people seated at the bar and served food, after only being there for 15 minutes, we asked for the check to pay for the drinks and to check on our order. She rudely said that the check was there the whole time and walked off, coming back about 5 minutes later to settle the check. Our food arrived about five minutes later...an hour after we were seated. Unacceptable! read more

I normally don't leave bad restaurant reviews, but I am in this case in hopes the ownership might benefit by the feedback. The owners of this restaurant also own The Chancery, a restaurant I've been going to for nearly 30 years and still love. This meal was not a good. I have to say I did really enjoy the horchata. It had enough cinnamon and was not grainy like some I've had elsewhere. I also did enjoy the salsa, however the chips appeared to be poured from a bag rather than freshly fried. Not a big deal for something free. I ordered the pick two option, and paid the premium price for steak and shrimp chimichangas as my two options. Seeing that I was choosing my protein, I didn't expect them to also contain refried beans. I don't ever recall eating meat chimichangas before that had beans. The pastiness of the beans was an unpleasant texture with the meat. Even worse was the stringy cheese in the chimichanga. It wasn't melty stringy in a good way. It was clumpy type stringy, which is an indication of being heated too far beyond its melting point. The meal came with rice and refried beans, as is standard. I'm not a personal fan of refried beans and do enjoy when a restaurant gives an option of black beans. These were filler items, fine if you like them. I ordered churros for dessert to go. The waitress indicated the churros were filled, but didn't know with what. I requested she find out, as that would impact my dipping sauce selection, plus I was really hoping for caramel filling since that wasn't listed by the waitress as a dipping sauce option. She came back telling me that normally they are filled with caramel, but today they sourced from a different supplier and we're not filled, however they had caramel dipping sauce. I requested the chocolate and caramel sauces. She came back with three sauces, which I regret not checking at the restaurant. I did try one of the churros, and it was hard and crispy, nearly burnt. I asked that it be either remade or refunded. They remade it, and it was better, although not good enough to be worth ordering again. When I got it home and dipped in the sauces, I got a chocolate, a vanilla, and a honey. I didn't get the caramel, but fortunately I do have a homemade toffee sauce that I made the other day. The honey was an odd combo. The chocolate sauce was mediocre, like a cheap grocery store chocolate sauce with a strong flavor of cocoa rather than chocolate. The vanilla was ok. The waitress, other than not knowing the menu items, was pleasant and attentive, and the rest of the staff was welcoming, so no issues with service.As far as food, I really wanted to like this restaurant, but I will not be dining here again, despite it being close to my home. read more

Ignore low star ratings, people don't know how to review Mexican or manage their expectations or demands; learn this: 1. mocajete with the works, a bit expensive, but great to take home with extra tortillas 2. micheladas, made very well. 3. Korean tacos, because an order of two is too is tasty - I can't do just two, who am I, Charlie Buckets? Say, two hundred... 4. Table side guac, if you don't mind employing manual labor at your table; I do. 5. I rated it a 3 for the service. We wanted to order to table side guacamole after we placed our meal order, but the server never came back until the meal was completed. The kitchen staff brought our food and the other waiter brought us more water. I guess the table side guac is something they don't try sell. No idea why there are such poor reviews for this place! We were in town for a wedding and my family ate here the day after-there were 23 of us and they were able to accommodate us in a private alcove. The guacamole was awesome and they had a really creative curry queso app that was a little sweet but still super interesting. I ordered the three lakes tacos and they were delicious. Crispy fish, cabbage toppings with a white queso sauce. Lots of rice on the side. Everyone in our group was really happy with their meals. We had two toddlers with us who were well-received and not scoffed at. Overall it was a great experience. I tried it for the 1st time and it will be my last! Shrimp soup was devoid of flavor - most bland thing I have tasted. Fish fry was okay but potato pancakes were bland and dry. Potato skins were actually gross tasting and inedible. My husband thought that the fajitas were okay but very little meat (big price tho) and way too many veggies. Use to come here often last summer and loved it. Not sure what happened but the last two times I've been here the service has been horrible. They have definitely disappointed us big. My husband and I went here with two other couples for dinner. When we checked in both the hostesses seemed like it was their first day-or maybe they didn't know where they were. We then went to the bar to grab some drinks while waiting for our table-the bar tenders were very nice but seemed confused. Then we sat down and ordered the table side guac which was amazing! Highly recommend. We ordered our meal and they forgot my husbands dinner so he sat there for 15 min waiting for his meal. And they still charged us for it. They brought me something different from what I ordered. They also gave my friend beans when he said no beans and gave my other friend her meal without any of the sides she ordered. Another one of the group ordered a margarita and it took at least 20 minutes to get. I would not go here, it's pricier for a Mexican restaurant with bad service. read more

Our menos were placed at the edge of the booth so it was clear that we didn't place our order. Finally we decided to leave. We walked back up to the hostess area, handed her the menus and told her that we will not be dining here tonight that we have been waiting 25 minutes for the wait staff. And all she said was, "oh, ok." I responded with a "Really? That's it." Then she came back with a, "Oh, I'm sorry." On may 16th I Ordered three meals for curbside service. When I went inside to let them know where my car was for them to bring me my food I was met by a very unprofessional young lady She gave no greeting at all, she didn't even look up or give eye contact but she was busy chewing her gum like a cow chewing cud. Man, y'all are crazy. Jose's good by me! It was packed, but our wait was not long at all. Was hoping for a patio seat, but that was a no go, hopefully next time. Service: Our server was fine. Not outstanding, but not characteristic of the service complaints noted here in the least. Atmosphere: It was busy but did not feel crowded or too noisy. Typical music and decor, I thought it was nice. Oh, and the tables are pretty. Drinks: So I have a drink like three times a year, so I would be a pretty poor judge of drinks. We had a mojito and margarita, and they were both good. Food: Chips and salsa were good. The salsa was not bad, but was missing some heat. We ordered green sauce and got red on an order of enchiladas. Whatever, it was still good. The enchiladas had a little kick to them, which was a nice surprise. I ordered some food for Cinco de Mayo from here, and while I did wait around a bit to receive my food, it was obvious that the staff were doing and trying their absolute best to help everyone get their food. Yes, the set-up was a mess but overall we have to remember that this restaurant is not set-up as a normal take-out restaurant. They are typically a sit-down restaurant with a maybe a couple of take-outs a night. And during this whole COVID situation they have had a steady flow of takeouts through out the day at a rate that was easily manageable for the staff. NO ONE could have predicted the sheer number of orders that this location received on May 5th. i was able to witness the encounter from a previous reviewer "Billy". And while what he said was somewhat true, he was the one that started with the aggressive comments towards the hostess. Yes, it was her day off, but she came in to help out her bosses and at the end of the day to help us as customers navigate the set-up to receive our food as quickly as possible. It was fantastic to see other customers stand up for this hostess and tell this 'gentleman' that he was in the wrong. Overall, the take-out set-up could use some serious improvement to help us out as customers and the staff too. But I have nothing but praise for the staff who worked yesterday. Not one of them that I observed even came close to losing their cool when dealing with overbearing customers or the constant interruptions with their workflow, other than the instance mentioned above (and even then she handled it was far more grace than the reviewer mentioned). Stopped in at 1:00 on Friday for some shmexican lunch. While they do have a "lunch menu", it doesn't seem that the portions are any smaller, and the prices certainly aren't. I ordered [can't remember the name] tacos that were vegetarian, a mix of peppers, potatoes, carrots in a soft shell. They came with the side of black beans.My companion got salmon with beans and a salad. I also tried a margarita. My margarita came and it was fine - tasted absolutely 100% like a mix, and that should NEVER be the case at a Mexican restaurant. The veggie filling in my tacos was utterly tasteless, but the black beans were good. My friend's salmon was probably about a 3"x4" piece and seemed frozen. She ordered off the lunch menu and her entree alone was more expensive than my tacos AND margarita together. Our server was very slow, and after our checks were dropped we didn't see him for about 10 minutes. We actually had to get up and hand deliver our checks to the bartender to run, and we saw him standing next to the bar texting when we went up there... not cool man. I saw a huge garden out back when we were leaving, and granted it's too cold now, I love the sustainability of growing your own herbs and veggies. My lasting question is that if you are in the habit of growing your own veggies in the middle of the city, how hard would it be to create your own margarita mix? read more

I've only been here for happy hour, so there is great potential that this review could go up. Jose's Blue Sombrero took over the old Outback Steakhouse next to the Riverpoint strip mall. I've hear good things, but never had a chance to really go. That is, until I heard about their amazing happy hour. 3.50 Margs and Sangria, and FREE taco bar. Nothing ever free, huh? Well this is. The Margs went down like wata. Not sugary at all- I was super suprised because usually at places like this, its like asking for sugary gut rot. They were smooth and cold and everything I could have asked for in a marg. The taco bar was not bad. I had the chicken, which I thought was pretty good! I wish there was any sort of a vegetable selection though. I know that 's being picky of a FREE taco bar, but beans can sometimes be so much cheaper than beef or chicken! I'm suggesting this to help em out. I'll check em out and try out some of the real food. We did get guac when were were there and it was 8 dollars. yeeeesh. It looks like I'll echo a lot of the reviews that are already here, but I suppose that there is nothing wrong with a little repetition. I've been here three or four times now. Chances are pretty good that I'll be back again at some point. Here are the four reasons why: 1. The location is convenient. 2. The service has always been well above average. 3. The chips are good and the table side guacamole is more than serviceable. 4. It is an extremely family friendly establishment, which is admittedly the real clincher and bumps my review to 3 stars. (a) There are 5 or so kid menu meal options, which are each $3.99. (b) chocolate milk is readily available. (c) The hostess supplies an entire solo cup full of crayons for the kids to use on their kids menus (no standard three pack of boring primary colors here). (d) Kids (at least the ones descended from me) really appreciate that cup of after meal mini-cookies that the server brings with the bill. Now for that repetition part that I promised at the start. Fill up on the chips and that guacamole, because the entrees are average at best. If the chips aren't enough, maybe add a margarita. They offer a wide selection of margaritas and tequila options. The margarita that I tried was, like the guacamole, decent enough. In short, this place is certainly catering to a certain demographic. I happen to be a part of that demographic, so I'll take it. If you're kid free, don't waste your time or money here. A drive to the near south side really can't be THAT inconvenient. Today's visit started off a little rocky. We were told there was a 15 minute wait only to be seated 40 minutes later. Once seated it took a while for our waitress to come over but once she was there the service was awesome! She took our order without writing anything down and we were a little worried it would be messed up. Everything we ordered came out perfectly and quickly. I will definitely be coming back to this location. I think that the hostesses could use a bit of training but our waitress Trina was the best. read more

I have been here many times since I moved to mequon as I haven't been able to find anything better in the area. Overall Joses is usually pretty decent. The food is pretty good overall, margaritas are good, it's the service that is hit or miss. Whatever you do do not sit in the bar at a table, done this a few times and service is always bad as it's the bartenders who are the servers and they are usually busy making drinks for tables and others in the bar area. As for food. I'd stick with the tacos, the other items just aren't great. The only exception is the lobster enchiladas. They are good, just not my cup of tea but my wife LOVES them. While the food was ok, I was so disappointed with the total lack of social distancing protocols in this restaurant I ate in the bar and there was not even a seat spacing...let alone 6feet! I have been to this restaurant on multiple occasions but my last 2 visits wasn't great. The only time I enjoyed my visit because there was a really nice waiter who made sure everything was excellent. I always get the fried avocado tacos. They are really good ( just in case you're looking for a vegetarian meal). Anyways, I went in September 2020 and I had a great experience, the food was delicious; I paid and tipped using my credit card. 3 months later I started getting charges from the restaurant so I had to report it to fraud. Some how they didn't process the charge on their end so they charge my card for the amount twice plus tip. I'm thankful for my credit card company who returned my money back to me. ( my advice use cash) Today was the first time going back because like I said above the fried avocado tacos are really good. But today we received poor service. Our waitress took a while to come over but every time we asked her a question she said it should be on the menu. Maybe she was new. After taking our order we didn't see her again. A different person started to wait on our table. The food was ok, not as hot like it was sitting before being brought out. When it was time to pay, the waiter just took the payment and never returned. He didn't ask if we needed change ( even though it was pay and tip in the case) or if he could assist us with anything else. We just sat amongst ourselves until we were ready to leave. Just visited this restaurant. Seating was quick and Waitress was kind. Salsa was a puréed type of black bean salsa. It was definitely tasty but too salty. My girlfriend ordered a plain (lime) house margarita on the rocks. She enjoyed it (was a bit sweet and could have had more tequila). I ordered baked tilapia served with rice and a yummy lemon butter sauce. I really enjoyed it. My girlfriend had beef enchiladas with red sauce, rice and beans. The rice was really good for Mexican style rice. She liked the meal and thought the red sauce was spicy which added a nice kick to the dish. After getting the check our waitress brought us a little cup of mini sprinkle cookies which were probably some sort of popular Mexican cookies. I thought that was a nice bonus to the meal. Overall, the restaurant atmosphere was great and the food was pretty good for Mexican. If you like Mexican definitely check them out. They seem more authentic than other places. read more

The restaurant was very busy both times that I went, so they must be doing something right! My most recent visit was on a Friday night, around 6PM. There was about a 20 minute wait. Service was prompt and friendly. The salsa was pretty good...very salty though. I got a pineapple margarita & it was strong and yummy. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos...best I've had and believe me, I eat A LOT of Al Pastor tacos! The meat was tender and thin sliced, delicious! My BF had a tosada and chimichunga...he said that they were both very fresh and delicious as well. They serve you these little sprinkle cookies with your bill. I will admit, the cookies taste like cardboard with sprinkles on top but it's a cute little touch to the end of the meal. :) read more

First of all the guacamole made tableside is absolutely delicious! The first few times weI ate here we opted not to get it thinking it would be too much for the two of us... because we wanted a meal, right?! But one night we were hungry for guac specifically and decided to have it and share a meal. It was so delicious that we get it every time we go now. And when we decide to share a meal the server is always gracious enough to bring two plates with it already divided. Quality and value* hands-down the best. Atmosphere * whether sitting inside or alfresco Menu options* they have a refreshing variety that you don't see on typical Mexican restaurant menus. Also, We keep going on various days of the week to see what kind of special they have. We have become weekly regulars at some point through the week.
