Trying Tasty Dumpling in the Safeway shopping center for the first time . Placed a takeout order by phone about 20 minutes before arriving. Apparently the register went down shortly after I hung up. When I arrived the line was almost to the door and the place felt very busy. The kitchen had lively music playing and several cooks working while the cashier tried to manage orders and write things down on receipt tape since the system was down. She was polite and clearly doing her best. My order had already been sitting on the counter, but since the register wasn't working she had to ask again what I ordered. While I was waiting, two customers behind me walked out and another canceled her order. It probably would have helped if customers were notified right away that the register was down. I also noticed dine in plates and bowls of soup being placed on the counter near the register where customers were standing, with a lot of activity happening around them. Eventually the system came back up and I was able to pay, but by then my food had gotten cold. For about $75 for five items I expected a better experience. The shrimp and pork dumplings had a noticeably strong fishy flavor and the beef roll was cold and lacked flavor. I understand technical issues happen but better communication and fresher food would have made a big difference. If the service flow improves I'd be open to giving them another try. read more

Even though I arrived the last half hour before 8:30 pm closing time, the restaurant allowed me to dine in and had my order ready in about 15 minutes. I asked permission first. The Spicy Xi'an Cold Noodles arrived first. You can order spicy or nonstick. Spicy still wasn't spicy enough for me, so I added chili oil from the handy table condiments. Not the most exciting dish, but good comfort food during hot summer weather. The Beef Rolls arrived shortly after. I think they are food perfection. I could eat them all day or anytime of the day! It's a Chinese breakfast or brunch menu item. One or two of the sliced beef rolls make a good pre-workout snack. I just toast them in my toaster oven to reheat, which is 450 degrees for like 2 or 2.5 minutes. Marinated beef in slices with green onions wrapped in a crispy pancake. The beef was chilled before sliced. I would order this regularly if I lived nearby. I asked the staff what were their popular dishes. He simply pointed to the image of Pork Xiao Long Bao or steamed soup dumplings on the wall. If you order them, you will not be disappointed. Plump and juicy. Make your own mixture of chili oil, vinegar, and soy sauce (regular with red cap, low sodium with green cap). I was impressed that the restaurant scrubs and washes down its kitchen backsplash and walls at the end of the day. I also saw them mopping. This is a self-service restaurant where you order from the counter, dispense your own ice cold water into stainless steel pint cups, and grab your own chopsticks and sauces. You get a number for your table. Tasty Dumpling is a fitting name for this yummy restaurant. The potstickers were okay (weren't as fried as I usually like them) and the scallion pancakes were a bit too fried, but overall the food was very tasty. I stopped by here for take out dinner since I was going to the Chip Cookies Yelp event. Very happy with this decision because the food was so TASTY! I ordered braised beef brisket noodle soup ($15), pan fried juicy pork dumplings ($13,) stir fried green beans ($12) and they kindly added a surprise container of steamed pork dumplings! I wasn't antsy or angry about the wait but I think they put it in there as an apologetic thank you. I didn't notice extra the container until we got home. Promptly greeted when I walked in, they were quite busy with diners and to-go orders. I pre-ordered online using their website and had a seat on the barstools at the front. One of the best places to get dumplings and XLB in the Sacramento area IMO. The dumplings are tasty and well wrapped (XLB doesn't fall apart or leak when you pick it up!). Keep in mind that they use the same filling for all the dumplings so what you order just determines how it is wrapped and cooked. The other dishes such as the dry braised string beans, beef noodles, popcorn chicken, green onion pancakes, beef rolls, etc, are all worth a try too! I can't believe I've not made this review sooner. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Sacramento! The staff here are efficient and hard workers. The decor is minimal save for the giant photoshopped mural on one wall. Peep the random ingredients that do not seem like they belong, haha. Offerings: - XLB: Pretty good and could hold a candle to Din Tai Fung! Love the flavor and textures! - Braised Beef Soup: this is not exactly up my alley. I love the soup flavor and the noodles. The meat is really tender but includes more random cuts that most American restaurants would not serve. This feels like a very authentic dish that I think adventurous/mainland Chinese people would appreciate. My tastes are unfortunately too white-washed. - Popcorn Chicken: really well fried and great flavor. If you're a fan of popcorn chicken, I would recommend ordering this. You won't be disappointed. - Chili Wonton: Really good and great flavor! One of the best dishes in my opinion. - Green beans/Broccoli: Both are so delicious and very salty. I will say, there must be MSG present. It is just that good. - Pan Fried Pork Dumplings: I love this dish almost anywhere. It is always served piping hot and it is so satisfying. Reviews looked good and I'm always down for a dumpling meal! - PARKING - Large parking lot for all the businesses in this plaza. No problem finding a spot here. - ENVIRONMENT - Not a huge restaurant inside, but decent amount of space for 2/4/6 party tables. Most people seemed to be picking up to-go orders rather than dining in. You order at the front and then they give you a number so that they can deliver the food to the appropriate table. - SERVICE - They got the first few items out fairly quick, but after we noticed one item was missing, we let them know. It took them over 15 minutes for one item, and it was the Beef Roll. The Beef was cold and the pancake outside was also cold! Not sure why we waited so long just for a soggy and cold item. - FOOD - Definitely just focus on the dumplings here, as the store name suggests. The other items we ordered left us wishing we just ordered several variations of the dumplings. - SPICY XLB: Great flavor, lots of soup, amazing dumpling skin! The perfect amount of spice! - STEAMED BEEF DUMPLINGS: Nice chewy skin, in comparison to the XLB skin! I went to Tasty Dumpling for the first time for dinner tonight with a friend and it exceeded my expectations! They are located inside the giant Crocker Village shopping center across from Safeway. We ordered the Vegetarian Dumplings and the Cold Noodles (non spicy). The Cold Noodles came out first, it was just wide noodles with thinly sliced cucumber and some kind of sauce on it. It was very light and refreshing - we added our own chili oil to it for a little kick. The dumplings took a little while to come out, but I know it's because they make them fresh to order. The Vegetarian Dumplings were packed with flavor and better than some of the meat ones I've had at other restaurants. They stayed together and did not fall apart when we tired picking them up. I would order this again! The inside is small with a select number of tables, but I like that you can see the kitchen from the front and watch them make the dumplings. Walked in ordered my food took 45 minutes for me to get my food. They sat other people down, who came in after me they finished their meal before I even got my order which I placed before them. DoorDash came half an hour later. They made sure to fulfill their order after the receipt was printed prior to my order being placed. Half my food is now cold growing up eating dim sum. You could take a paper menu and mark off in the boxes what quantity of each item you wanted, then take a number for your table. I'd only been here once before and tried the pork and shrimp XLB soup dumplings and the shrimp fried rice at that time. We shared the pork xiao long bao soup dumplings (8 per order), the pork and shrimp steamed dumplings (8 per order), the scallion pancake (8 pieces), stir-fried green beans, and the shrimp fried rice. Mom had a bottle of Coke Zero and I got the Honey Lemon Tea. The green beans came out first, then the fried rice, pork and shrimp dumplings, scallion pancake, and then the xiao long bao. This spread barely fit on our small table, but we did order a lot! The green beans were fresh and crisp-tender, not too mushy, crunchy, or oily with the right amount of garlic. Shrimp fried rice was very "clean," not oily or salty. The scallion pancake was also very good, which reminded my mom of the Filipino fritter "ukoy" in texture and was not overly salty or tough to chew. Since we didn't see any shumai, the pork and shrimp dumplings were a very nice substitute and good flavor! The pork soup dumplings were also very good. The honey lemon iced tea I got (green tea?) was also super refreshing and had perfect sweetness. Leftovers were enough for another meal/sitting each! Great service, from each dish that came to the table to the takeout boxes/bags/sauces, prompt cleaning/turnover of tables. Clean bathroom. Found this place on Yelp: You order at the counter and take a seat. It was near-empty on New Year day at 1pm. We ordered the pork postickers, pork XLB, and wanted soup, so we got braised beef noodle. There is a window where you can watch the staff carefully make each dumpling, which my son loved. The food was straightforward and yummy. Been here quite a few times, a quick alternative to Journey to the Dumpling. Same concept, but scaled down menu. Everything is hand made here, and the best thing about them is that nothing is hidden (exposed kitchen). I'd say Tasty's Xiao Long Bao (XLB) is a step ahead of JTD. The skin is thinner and the soup & pork filling is more plentiful inside the XLB. Once you puncture a hole or two in your XLB, drench the inside with vinegar and chili oil and eventually bite into the XLB with your mouth closed, that burst of juice inside your mouth is heaven! (Hope that's not too graphic) . The "twisty top" isn't thick & doughy, unlike those at dim sum joints. Everything else we've tried here is fresh, tasty and consistent. Green beans with minced garlic are fresh, snappy and no stringy ends! Kitchen/front area is clean and organized, and capacity max's out at 40. Owner is personable and you can tell cares about both the food and facility. He watches the employees inside the kitchen like a hawk and he busses tables, brings out orders and operates the register when he's free. If you're around the area and in the mood for XLB, get over to Tasty Dumpling, the next best thing to the infamous Din Tai Fung! read more

We ordered the Shrimp & Pork Xiao Long Bao, Sliced Potato Salad w/ House Dressing, the Sesame Balls, the Pan Fried Juicy Pork Bun, and the Xi'an Cold Noodles. The soup dumplings were super juicy! I always like making a hole in it, pour all the soup into a spoon, and then drink everything at the end. The sliced potato salad was a great starter, since it was cold.
