There is something delightfully American about turning an old church into a brewery. It feels almost inevitable, as though the building merely exchanged one congregation for another. The faithful still gather every weekend--they simply kneel before pizza instead of pews. Beer Church sits just down the street from Sonny D's, an establishment I recommend only to those conducting scientific research into disappointment. Keep walking. The church itself has lived several lives. A friend who grew up in New Buffalo told me he spent his Cub Scout meetings in the basement. Today, where badges were once earned for knot-tying and fire-building, adults earn merit badges for surviving a flight of IPAs and deciding whether to split one more pizza. I've eaten here over several summers before writing this. Restaurants in seasonal tourist towns are notoriously difficult to judge. A spectacular Tuesday in July can become a forgettable September afternoon, and many survive simply because the next wave of vacationers doesn't know any better. Beer Church is not one of those places. Across the board, it accomplishes something surprisingly difficult: consistency. The Crema di Pistachio pizza remains one of the finest things to emerge from its wood-fired oven. Fennel sausage, creamy pistachio, restrained sweetness, and beautifully blistered dough somehow manage to feel both rustic and elegant. The crust has enough leopard spotting to remind you someone in the kitchen understands Naples, even if Lake Michigan is a long way from Campania. For a small harbor town, this pizza punches well above its weight class! Then there's the Banana Pepper Royale, another showcase for that excellent fennel sausage. Creamy goat cheese softens the peppers while bright San Marzano tomato sauce ties everything together. Each bite balances acidity, richness, spice, and sweetness without missing a beat. Not everything receives my unconditional blessing. Someone in the kitchen has committed what can only be described as a crime against nduja. A beautiful Calabrian spreadable sausage--possibly even Tempesta from Chicago--is treated like ordinary chorizo, cooked until it loses the silky richness that makes nduja so special, then smeared onto bread. Don't smear it for me. Let me do that. This is sacrilege. One does not buy a Stradivarius only to use it as a canoe paddle. The frustrating part is that the rest of the menu suggests someone behind the scenes has traveled well and eaten even better. These details matter. When you're working with artisan meats, respect the artisan. I'd also love to see more seasonal rotation on the sausage board. Service has consistently ranged from very good to excellent. Whether downstairs with families or upstairs at the bar, the staff is friendly, attentive, and never overbearing. My daughter has declared the strawberry gelato mandatory every visit, and I've learned not to argue. The beer is, appropriately, very good. Their Italian Pilsner has become my reliable companion through many summer afternoons--crisp, refreshing, and exactly what you want after convincing yourself that yes, another pizza is necessary. Behind the bar, Nikki and her team know both the beer list and the spirits with refreshing confidence. The cocktail menu is admittedly a bit busy, with plenty of sugary drinks for vacationers, but that's life in a tourist town. Ignore the sugar bombs. Order something classic instead. I've ordered cocktails obscure enough to stump bartenders in San Francisco, Chicago, and even Tokyo. At Beer Church, those requests are met not with panic but curiosity--and more often than not, an excellent drink. That's perhaps the highest compliment I can give. Beer Church isn't trying to be Brooklyn. It isn't pretending to be Chicago. It simply understands hospitality. Inside a building once devoted to fellowship, it still brings people together. The sermons have been replaced by pizza, the hymns by conversation, and the communion wine by an excellent Italian pilsner. Frankly, that's a conversion I can enthusiastically support. read more

The menu is massive--seriously, pages of options. We ended up ordering an espresso martini, a mimosa, a brunch plate, and breadsticks with cheese that were honestly some of the best we've had. My wife and I come here about 3-4 times a year. Well this weekend we went twice! First was for lunch right when we got into town. We shared the beer flights and margherita pizza. Pizza was delicious. The center of it probably could have used another minute or two but overall it was great. The beers we had were Pontius Pilate, Marinetti, Peach be with you, Margeaux Rita, and Lime of God. We enjoyed them all except the Margeaux. (Too salty) While still in town we went back for breakfast. I had the Communion bread toast flight (half order) and my wife the Meet Me at the 2 Egg Funeral. No complaints on the food it was all delicious. We had the mimosa flight which our flavors were Cranberry, guava, mango, peach, and strawberry banana. They are not shy with the champagne! We have passed Beer Church Brewing several times while in New Buffalo and we finally stopped in, but I doubt we will be back. They have an extensive drink menu . I tried their homemade seltzer and could not drink it . It tasted bitter, fortunately it was a 5 ounce. My husband trued the Peach Be With You ! Was so excited to try this place.... Oh boy was I wrong!!!!! Started off good with breadsticks, pizza was good too, until we found a GIANT VERY DEAD GRASSHOPPER on our pizza!!!!! I'm a server and I know things happen, but this was handled absolutely terribly!!!! We told our server what happened, who proceeded to leave the pizza with the grasshopper in front of me until we left 30 minutes later. The manager didn't come over to address the issue and no one offered me something new to order or a new pizza. After me and my friend only ate one slice each, we were told only TWENTY PERCENT was taken off of the pizza!!!!! RIDICULOUS!!!! I had to ask to speak to a manager as she never initially addressed the issue with me. I had to beg for the pizza to be taken off... as the manager blamed the large bug on the "outside kitchen" or "outside seating". It was inside the arugula and was VERY much dead for a while. The manager, Jasmine, was awkward, unapologetic, and handled the situation terribly. She initially said "the best she can do is 50% off" since we each ate a slice. I had to describe how absolutely repulsed I was for her to take me seriously at all. After negotiation, she finally took the pizza off. This is our second time at Beer Church Brewing and both experiences were excellent. The food was so fresh and tasted great. We were pleasantly surprised by that for a random Wednesday afternoon. I do think the prices for a salad or sandwich are a little high, around $22, but at the same time the ingredients tasted quality. The beer flight comes on a cross so that's a nice touch for the venue. The servers were quick and attentive and great with our kids. Looking forward to coming back! read more

I was excited to experience Beer Church the minute I learned about it, and we had that opportunity this past Labor Day weekend. My expectations were high and, despite a few delays due to a hectic dinner rush, the visit did not disappoint. My wife and I sat on the patio to enjoy the nice, mild weather, but I wouldn't mind sitting grabbing a seat inside to fully take in the decor on a future visit. The "Hymnal" pages are chaotic and overwhelming in the best way, with a wide variety of beer, cocktail and food options. I ordered the "cross flight" to sample 5 brews - each selection was distinct and flavorful, and I would most recommend Crooked Cross Cream Ale and Lime of God Lime Lager. I regret to say we did not try any of the pizzas (another reason I'll have to return), but our food was still delicious. The Communion Bread made for a satisfying appetizer with whipped butter, the Cobb Salad (It's Cobblicated) is always a reliable go-to when a menu offers so many intriguing options, and the Wood Fire Italiano was the best of all three. As a five hour drive, it'll probably be a bit before we have a chance to stop by again - if your trip is shorter, I would absolutely take advantage while Beer Church is in service. read more

I Was super excited to try this place, we come from chicago every few months to new Buffalo and this was the first time we decided to try the beer church brewing. The food online looked good. Once we sat down, I got a beer and ordered the wings and pizza. The beer was the only good thing about my meal. The wings were cold and somewhat fatty. I said okay, maybe it was just a one off. Well the two pizza come that my wife and I ordered, and they were lukewarm at best. The waitress came by and asked how everything was. I told her the pizza were somewhat cold, but we didn't want to cause any issues, which I should have send them back. They were tasteless and cold. She said oh sorry and it wasn't her fault so we just decided to keep eating. A hostess came over and we said the same thing, and she also said sorry, but didn't say let's exchange your pizza. She was nice, but said I'll tell the cooks as you came at a strange time at the night. It was 9.30pm, and they close at 12. So I'm not sure what time I should come to have a warm pizza. Pretty much over priced, cold food that tasted like cardboard with some tasteless meat on it. Sad, I really was excited about trying this place. I wouldn't go again. The Church Brewery made for a great dining experience after a long day at the beach. It has an accessible entrance for both the indoor seating and the patio, which was appreciated. I was not able to check the restrooms. The upper patio felt a bit more lively with music, while the lower patio was just as spacious and a bit more laid back. The staff were warm and friendly. We ordered the Margherita pizza, which was fresh, flavorful from the tomato and basil. Being a brewery, they offered a beer flight for $25, which was a fun way to try different flavors. And for those who don't drink beer, they also had moonshine, cocktail, and wine flights, which was a really cool option. The menu had more than just pizza--sandwiches, tasty appetizers, and even gelato were available. I'd definitely come back again, whether for brunch or a dinner. Have driven past here every time we go to New Buffalo. They always seem to be busy even during the week days. Decided to finally stop and we are so happy we did. Even thought it was busy they were able to seat us right away. We went to the top patio which was open seating. Drinks were 10/10 with all the ones we got. Tons of different flavors and really does taste like a quality made cocktail. The beers were also great, you can get them in multiple sizes or in flights to get a variety. Pizza is expensive (cheapest was 18$) but so delicious with the neopolitan style. If it wasn't so pricey we would stop in more often but also understand why they keep it that way being a tourist town.
