The rooftop is brightly lit, funky/cool decorations, string lights. No drink menu, but machines of frozen passion fruit daquiri and pina colada spinning behind the bar - $14 each w/ a tiny umbrella. Good music & not too crowded, though was certainly picking up a bit when we left. We didn't try any food or see the other floors, but definitely plan on it based on the nice time we had this visit. read more

Really enjoyed the food and the entire atmosphere of Joy District! I was there to have dinner and then stayed to dance the night away. My friend ordered multiple appetizers from the menu to share with the group and all were outstanding. Really liked the octopus tacos and the hawaiian tuna poke cones which are the ones I remember. I ordered 2 sushi rolls for dinner (the spicy tuna and the shrimp tempura) and really liked both (nothing out of the ordinary but the fish tasted fresh). Some of my friends ordered the scallops which they enjoyed. Drinks were very flavorful! I was pleasantly surprised to see a few whiskey drinks on their menu so I tried a few. My favorite one was the "Final Ward"... highly recommend it! After dinner I went to the rooftop, which was smaller than what I remember from Epic but it was cool. They had a DJ spinning on the rooftop and multiple bars to grab drinks. Then I made my way down to the 2nd floor where we danced the night away! Music was a good mix however not much different than clubs like Underground or Paris. The vibe was cool so we ended up staying there until almost 2am. Absolutely love this place! Joy District is a place me and my friends love to go any day of the weekend. The venue has three very distinct floors, this past time me and my girlfriend decided to check out the rooftop. It's very colorful with lots of fun decorations everywhere and creates an inviting and happy atmosphere. While we were there, we also decided to catch a light dinner that included amazing lobster rolls.. omg.. if you're a lobster lover, you need to try these. We also didn't miss our chance to try the frose, frozen rose champagne! I love this place, and will continue to go back regularly. read more

Years ago in the clubs it wasn't like this. I've never not enjoyed myself more than at this place. Horrible service. No covid protocol. Drinks outrageously priced for absolutely no dance room at all. Had to pay 20 per female in a 10 girl Bachelorette party to get roof top. To get to club didn't charge 4 girls in the party and stopped the rest to pay another 40 to get to shitty night club. I've never ever had such a poor time dancing and drinking. I'll never go back. read more

The bouncer (?) kept asking us how long we had been there, then the hostess told us they needed our table and we needed to leave after being there for an hour. Before I write the actual review, I must say I have never used yelp, but I find that my experience here recently should be publicized since it has to do with a public figure. My company recently had a holiday event here that seemingly went very well. Bianca did a fabulous job setting up the party and that staff and the managers working excelled at ensuring our needs were met. That is why this review is not a 1 star. My issue, and I believe it is a large one, and I fully plan to call the Tribune and follow up with this, is that one of the bartenders was the most unprofessional and rude person I have ever encountered. One of my coworkers first brought the young lady to my attention because she refused to serve her due to her saying "I'm busy" as she was on her phone. When I then asked if I could get a glass of wine from her, she responded to me, "I don't have to serve you." As she then turned her back on me and continued to scroll through her cell phone. I then asked another bartender for service and asked what the ladies name was and the professional bartender told me her name was Sidney. Ok, great. I waited a few minutes and then approached Sidney again and asked if we had done something wrong to her for her to give us no service. Please keep in mind this was a private event in the early evening and we not only paid a large gratuity in our contract but I saw my fellow coworkers leaving cash tips as well. She replied back to me that she just didn't want to because she wasn't going to make any money. I was very perplexed but was remaining extremely calm, and I followed up with another question and asked her whether or not it was her job to bartend for us and would she not be doing us a disservice since she was hired for this? She literally said the following words, "Look my dad is an Alderman and I'm never going to get fired here I can do what I want." She then turned back around, again, and continued to look at her phone. Now 3 of us heard her say that. Another of my coworkers asked a different Joy employee what her name was and he confirmed it was Sidney, and we also asked the gentleman what her last name was and he looked up something on his phone and he said Sawyer. Now there are about 5 of us including multiple directors at our company discussing this. We took pictures of her ignoring us and staying on her phone. And of course it was easy to google Alderman Sawyer. And lo and behold it even lists his children, and yes, Sydni is one of them. So at this point I find myself still upset 2 weeks after the fact. Some at the venue, but more so that a City of Chicago Alderman would allow his child to have such a terrible attitude about customer service. One must question what his thoughts are about the rest of the citizens of Chicago now. I also want to know why the ownership of Joy District allows bad customer service to continue simply because she is the daughter of an Alderman? What special favors are being done? It just reeks of terrible backhanded deals. I want Joy District to know that this will not be the last you have heard from us about this incident, but it will be the last time my company ever does anything with your establishment. I am going to be sending my incident, as well as the documentation it, and I believe 5 other co workers are as well, to the Tribune and the City Inspectors office. read more

Honestly I gave this place a try and can't say I would ever come back again or recommend this place to anyone. First off, if you are going to advertise that you are open until 3:00 am on here, maybe don't start kicking out people at 1:30 am. Secondly, if you are going to charge people that much on drinks and such (which I have no problem paying for good service), maybe have your staff actually treat them with respect and hospitality? I was literally shoved out the door and refused to use the bathroom before we left. I was here for a networking event yesterday and here are my thoughts- 1) Our company had our banner set up since we paid for a reserved space. We were near our banner the entire time. If your going to take it and put it in the back. Maybe ask us first? Maybe we were actually of thinking of disassembling it ourselves. 2) We had advertisements/pamphlets set up on a small stool near the banner. As we are standing right next to them someone came by and "cleaned" them up. I'm sorry, but I don't care how little something is worth, but when something does not belong to you. Don't touch it. Especially since it was in our "reserved" space. Again, maybe ask us first. Communication goes a long way in life. I've been to Joy District a few times now with family and friends for drinks, but hadn't tried the food until this past weekend. I really like the place, but it does get really crowded as the night goes on. The music is perfect...a nice combo of new and old. However, the crowd comes and goes so you can usually find a seat pretty quickly. Now to the food from my first experience this past weekend. I ordered the corn and zucchini fritters as a starter and was very pleased. I am from the South and these had a very Southern feel to them...guessing that was the fried breading part hahahaha!!! I wasn't sure what to order for my main, but decided on the Ahi Tuna Bowl. I am not stretching the truth at all when I say that this is now my favorite dish in Chicago. The portion of Ahi Tuna is very generous and the sauce and seasoning is spot on to my taste. One negative is that they don't have Captain Morgan. They do have other alternatives such as Cruzann spiced, Bacardi Oakheart, and Sailor Jerry, but all of them leave me with a raging headache the next day. This is usually an issue that only I have, but I always like to mention it in hopes that Captain Morgan will get it together and fix this ongoing issue in Chicago. Also, super happy to see our fav bartender, Rico, from the old EPIC back at this location!!! He makes great drinks, is super friendly, efficient, and on top of his game. Server tried to talk 2 of our friends out of a wristband deal. She made over $100 added gratuity but the poor bar back was the ones giving us cups and refills. Then she asked every other table if they wanted a refill but brought us nothing. A group of 10 women in a bachelorette party went to Joy District and I thought it was okay, we had a reserved table. we stayed there for 4 hours. The crowd is young, we had no problems, our waitress was very attentive, she kept coming back to serve us drinks. I do not have anything negative to say about this place. I held my wedding ceremony here on the rooftop on July 28, 2018, and it was such a beautiful, fun venue! Bianca was awesome throughout the planning process, and the staff was very professional. We were able to serve drinks to our guests before and after the ceremony that were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend for weddings or private events! read more

I recently attended their brunch for the 1st time this past Sunday (5/19). Previously, I have been to Joy District to visit their rooftop/bar and usually have had a good time. However, their brunch is far from that. There were plenty of food options, but it was cold and not visually appealing. I recommend the food display to include more lights. Personally, I like to see the food I am picking up. Also, our waitress was not attentive at all and most likely forgot that we were even in her section until my friend requested the check. Would I come back for their brunch? Nope, I don't think it is worth the time or money. read more

This brand now downtown eatery/rooftop has revived what was a pretty (in my opinion) stale and bored Epic. The decor is eclectic, the music is Fleetwood Mac, and the menu is fantastic! The head chef Matt is also the man responsible for the delicious food at the Hubbard Inn, and does NOT disappoint! I ordered the Grilled Chicken Bowl and it was delicious! Was here for an event six weeks ago. The bartender rang me out on another customer's tab. I let her know, and she rang me up on my correct tab. Unfortunately, she didn't refund the incorrect charge. I called the restaurant the next day to let them know and was told a manager would call me back. I didn't receive a call, so I tried again the next day. I have called the restaurant nearly every day for six weeks, left voicemails, left my number with hosts, spoken directly with managers three times, and still have not received a refund. Last week I spoke with a manager named Iggy who told me the refund would be taken care of, but nothing has happened. This is probably my new favorite summer spot. Boozy cocktails, great food, and friendly staff. Lee greeted us when we arrived and ended up being our server as well. She was knowledgeable of the menu and we were happy we trusted her recommendations (and she was just a sweetheart in general)! The tiger shrimp and chicken lollipops were killer and the Blackberry Mojito was fresh and delicious. My friend got the manzinita which had apple cider and tequila. It was yummy, but seems more appropriate for a fall menu. We went to the rooftop after and had a great time as well! Nowhere to sit, but it was a warm evening in Chicago so it was to be expected. My friends and I wanted to come here for a going away party for two of our friends. We came on a Friday night, with a fairly large group and expected there to be a cover charge based on reviews we read. We didn't make a table reservation because we were okay with standing or hanging out on the dance floor. When we arrived a little before 11pm, we asked the bouncer about cover charges prior to getting in line. We were told that it was $10 for guys and free for girls to go to the underground level. We figured that was fine and decided to wait in line. When it was our turn to get IDs checked, the bouncer asked how many people we had and started to count off people. He then decided that we were too big of a group and therefore, it was MANDATORY to buy a table or pay cover. We would've been fine paying the cover fee, except in the 10 minutes that we waited in line, it had magically gone from $10 (for guys) to $30 (or $20, we got two different answers from two different bouncers) and now ladies would have to pay, too - all just because they suddenly decided that our group was too big. I did not see any sort of disclaimer on the site about that, nor did the bouncer tell us that when we asked about cover. The inconsistency in pricing leads me to think that those numbers were arbitrary and they were just trying to rip us off and pocket the money. There was also a girl behind us who skipped the long line by tipping the bouncer $20. While we weren't necessarily surprised by any of this due to many negative reviews online, it left a bad taste because no one likes to feel like they're being taken advantage of. Went here for St. Patrick's day because the photos looked like so much fun and we were excited for the multi levels of the bar. When we got there, they were only allowing the first floor. Which was fine but, still a little disappointing. Then we went around and it was difficult to find a spot, so we chose to stand by the bar which has very little space to avoid getting in someone's way. My husband and I ordered two drinks; Crown and red bull that was $20 and Jameson and sprite which was $19. There was also an additional 4% COVID surcharge. It's one thing to pay for a COVID surcharge when the business is using that money to pay for extra cleaning supplies or ways to prevent the spread of COVID, but this place did nothing. There were no masks being warn, so why would you pay more? All in all our two drinks cost us $45 before tip. Wish we would have known we were paying so much for low quality.
