Visit Portage / Kalamazoo Michigan this Thanksgiving and been craving for Ted's Joy Fong Fried Rice, Crab Rangoons, Hot dinner rolls, Hot and Sour Soup, along with Salt Pepper Squid and other wonderful items on the menu. Only offering takeout or delivery, Joy Fong still rates as my favorite Chinese restaurant in Portage. The General's chicken, medium heat, included crispy breaded chicken in a well-seasoned sauce accompanied by a good assortnent of vegetables. The fried rice was also well-prepared. The egg rolls were filled with well-seasoned meat and just the right amount of shredded cabbage and bamboo shoots. The hot and sour soup was delicious! The price was very reasonable. Live in GR now and haven't found one Chinese restaurant as good as Joy Fong! Every time I make it back to Kalamazoo I stop at Joy Fong. Family owned business, very friendly people. Their complimentary sweet rolls are delicious (eat them hot and fresh!), fried rice is unique and like no other I've come across. I seriously have cravings for it when I think about it! Overall, food has been consistent and fresh every time since I first ate there in 2014. Seasonings in some dishes are definitely not what you get used to at more Americanized Chinese eateries and I think that is why some reviewers who have eaten there once think it's not fresh. Chinese spices are very different from American. Also, don't let their building scare you, I've gotten sick off restaurants that look "perfect" and seen things in kitchens from working in national chain restaurants. If you need a pretty environment, just order to-go. read more

Ok this isn't the best looking spot in town, but I honestly don't feel it deserves some of the bad reviews it gets, but c'est ce que c'est. Pulling up to this spot, I was a little leery because as previously mentioned, it isn't the best looking building. Has a weathered, beaten down look about it. But my brother assured me it was worth the visit. So inside we went. Immediately my entire perception of the place was flipped on it's head! We were immediately greeted so enthusiastically and warmly it caught me off guard for a second. You would have thought we were old family friends! We were immediately seated and offered free hot tea. After bringing our menus, the server asked if we wanted soup, which was also free! I opted for the classic egg drop, which was delicious. My brother also had egg drop and my mother had wonton soup. Both agreed the soup was tasty. After bringing our orders, she checked back on us frequently but it wasn't annoying. It felt more like that aunt you don't get to see much, but always wants to make sure you get enough to eat! The food was great! Probably not in my top 3 Asian spots but good enough to eat there again. I had the Sweet & Sour Combo (pork,chicken,shrimp), My brother had the Pineapple Duck, and mom had the Seafood combo. Food came out quickly despite there being a few other tables occupied. The take out counter was also constantly busy the entire time we were there. As soon as we were done, the server immediately asked us if we wanted ice cream.. for FREE lol We declined as we were stuffed by the large portions. Prices are very good for the amount of food you get. This combined with the super friendly staff will have me visiting again in the future! Yet another restaurant I have overlooked in the Portage area even though I've been visiting for years and I've gone to the bar right next to it a million times. Their sweet and sour chicken was delicious and I loved my roast pork egg foo young (omelette with brown gravy). Their wonton soup and egg rolls are great as well. Honestly, I can't think of any reason why I would dislike my meal. I encourage everyone to try Joy Fong if you haven't already. I wish I had found this place much sooner. read more

This place has been around for a long time (just like me). Quality is good and portions are above average. Their fried rice is some of the best I have had. Entrees I have enjoyed include sesame chicken, kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, sweet and sour pork and beef broccoli. I have been pleased with each of the entrees I have ordered. Additionally, I can recommend the wonton soup, egg rolls, and egg foo young. I recommend giving this place a shot. read more

Went here tonight with my sister and her family and we were the only ones in the whole place when we arrived about 6pm on Black Friday. The waitress was so friendly, happy, helpful and prompt! Soon after more and more people started coming in, but for our entire dinner experience, she still treated us as if we were the only people there. We initially went because my sister and I both missed the Suwan restaurant that was in Battle Creek about 20 years ago and found through a FB post that the owners of this place were the same. My sister has CONSISTENTLY through the last two decades reminisced about Suwan, the rolls, the won ton soup, and the Mongolian Beef dish with the crispy rice noodles and how NO ONE else does it the same or as well. So we were happy to come here tonight. Just sad it took 20 years to figure it out! Ha! So we got to talking to our amazing waitress and it turns out she had her first job at Suwan when she arrived to the USA! So that was a nice, sweet treat! The food and service were amazing and the owner came out as we were leaving to say hello and thank us and we left with a complimentary bag full of the fresh yeast rolls. We also left with 4 full bellies and every one of us had another full meal of leftovers from our dishes. The ingredients were fresh; not frozen, canned or dehydrated. The won ton soup is nothing like I've ever had anywhere else than Suwan. This place is off the beaten path and does not look amazing from the outside. Just go! Go here and enjoy! I really wanted to like this place. I've driven by it a million times but the shabby exterior always turned me off. A week ago a friend suggested we eat here because she likes it, but when we entered we learned that the dining room was closed due to the pandemic. I grabbed a menu on our way out and tonight my family and I decided to place a takeout order. I ordered moo goo gai pan, but ate only half and threw the rest out. The chicken was chewy and tasted old, most of the rest was cabbage that was bland to bitter, and everything was coated in a gelatinous greasy sauce. My hubby ordered orange chicken. He was disappointed. I tried a piece and the sauce was odd. You would expect it to be sweet and spicy but it was neither. Our son got sweet and sour chicken. He didn't seem to mind it. There were very few veggies in it. I also had a piece of his chicken; the breading was soggy. The egg rolls were good, but we were not forewarned that they contained pork. Should we have expected that they would ... ? Hubby's fried rice also contained pork. I could see that being an issue for some diners. So the search for a good Chinese restaurant near our home continues. One final note: the cashier was not wearing a mask. read more

Biscuit, what is this? ...throw it on the floor. Entree, General chicken, large portion, hard fried portions of chicken that was rendered inedible, about 25% of the chicken had no sauce on it and it looked like freezer burnt KFC bits. The fried rice was bland, egg roll greasy. I ate half of everything. Crab Cheese, disturbing, these are not wafer thin crisp little joys of happiness, these are closed triangles with dense undercooked dough and stuffing with no flavor, and forget about the sweet in sour served in a ketchup bottle...ate two halves of the 6 I was served. Ice cream....no chance I was ordering this, I'm paying and running. If these other reviewers are local I'm assuming they have a great relationship with the workers or owners which were all very sweet, and clearly they knew everyone that walked in, hence the 2 stars, beyond that don't go to this place for anything other than company, if you want to eat, pack a lunch to bring there! read more

We came here on Christmas day - I know - and they were packed! We had called ahead and ordered pickup. 25 minute wait time. We made our way over to the restaurant and arrived a bit early. There were a few orders ahead of us. We did end up having to wait a bit longer than planmed but it was understandable with how crazy busy they were! The staff was super friendly. Order came our hot and as ordered. The food was good for this price point. Being a favorite of my husband's, we stopped in Kalamazoo only to eat at this gem and I couldn't stop eating :o I am happy to report that this is now my favorite Chinese takeout! The icing on the cake is that the owners are very genuine and sweet. It is sad for me to say that this is probably the worst Chinese food that I have ever had in my life. Even the fried rice was really bad - it had a congealed fat in cube size folded into the fried rice. The wonton soup had no meat filling, just a thick, rubbery wonton skin floating in a tasteless watery broth. I am sorry to say that this was the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. I just moved to the area and well decided to try the nearest Chinese restaurant. I was sorely disappointed. The food was hot as in temperature at least. But the general tsao's chicken was bland, mushy, without any accompanying vegetable whatsoever, pretty much nondescript. The rice that it came with was overcooked. And the dinner roll was hard. Yes I said dinner roll. Hopefully it doesn't make me ill later. The only saving grace was that they had two different kinds of eggrolls, no meat or "all the meats". I chose the no meat eggroll. It was reasonably sized, good and crunchy with good flavor. But I'm sorry eggrolls do not a meal make. Hopefully their other dishes are better made but this one was a fail. read more

My wife is from Taiwan and I am a non-Chinese but for both of us this is our favorite restaurant of any type. Large portions excellently prepared at a very reasonable price. If you don't see what you want on the menu, just ask, they will make things not on the menu. Not many employees, mostly the owners so delivery may be slow. read more

Egg rolls are easily the best in town as is the Egg Drop Soup! Prices are more than reasonable and the portions are significant. To the reviewer that complained that their sweet and sour chicken was served with chicken and sauce together? You've been eating at WAY too many low scale Chinese buffets. That's the way Sweet & Sour is supposed to be served. Best part is the owners and their family are really nice people. exceptional quality americanized chinese food. Their meat is tender and not at all chewy or rubbery like some cheap chinese food places tend to be. I ordered a Szechuan style chicken made ungodly stupid spicy and my wife the szechuan beef. Good veggie to meat ratio and the veggies still crisp and not cooked to a mush. The rice accompanying our szechuan dishes was some of the best rice I've ever had from a Chinese restaurant. They offered us soup, i chose egg drop but she suggested to try the other soup which i did (it was divine). The pricing for the food was really good as well as the service, our total was like 11.50 for 2 szechuan dishes, some tea and some water. The spiciness level was insane and my wife commented how my face was turning red but i didnt care as I spooned more and more chili oil into the dish until it was a red mess.
