I've lived less then a mile here for pretty much my entire life and I have never been here. Decided to finally try it and pick up some take-out for dinner and it really was just A-OK. I called in General Tsos chicken, lo mein, cheese wontons and a wonton soup. All of which were ready in probably less than 5 minutes (huge plus). When I dug in though, the disappointment begun. The General Tsos pieces were absolutely huge, and honestly difficult to eat without cutting them multiple times. The sauce was lacking a lot of flavor and was very thin. The lo mein was OK, but it was soaking in the Tsos sauce which I didn't care for. The cheese wontons were good and they had plenty of filling. The wonton soup seemed a little lackluster, but better the second day when it was reheated. It wasn't a "bad" meal, but I think I'll stick to Great Wall. read more

My quest for the perfect (if there is one) Chinese take out continues as I dismiss Joy Wo Chinese Kitchen from my list and from my memory. While taking care of some errands in the shopping center, I decided I would try Joy Wo for lunch. Their menu is like any other and prices are average, however, there was such a horrible smell emanating from Joy Wo I was weary about going in. No scents of General Tso's frying up or lo mein being stir fried. I stepped a foot inside, could barely breath, felt like throwing up and left. Wo soldier, stay away. The menu is expansive but all of it can really be simplified into different combinations of chicken, pork, or shrimp. I'm not like every Chinese food-eating American who is content with just General Tso or Sesame Chicken all the time. China is the third largest country in the world and I feel like there should be more to offer. My taste buds grow weary with the all too common fried rice, lo mein, chicken, and dumplings. I understand the restaurant is family-owned, but it would be nice to have a cashier who can carry a conversation about their food in English. Since there aren't descriptions of each dish on the menu I usually ask the cashier about them and he seems impatient. The attitude here is more "place your order, and take a hike." This message is further conveyed by placing a minimum amount of seating. In conclusion, I feel that Joy Wo is out of place here in Shoreham and might be better served in a metropolis where the Asian population is higher and people don't waste time sitting down. If it wants to succeed in Shoreham, I recommend they make the interior more inviting, ask the customer if they would like to stay and eat instead of just bagging up the food to go, and offer descriptions on their menu or hire somebody to explain them. Rocky point has a few places like these and is only one town over. read more

Still good. Lo Mein noodles, General Tsao, Tofu and veggies, egg roll things, fried rice, many of the usual favorites were sufficiently good. I put on at least one pound every time I eat their food. Is that a plus? I am liking it. There is not much difference between the chow mein and chop suey, except for a few carrots in one of them, I forgot which, but you can ask. Everything is still good. I don't have any idea what the other couple of reviews are even talking about; as I've been going to Joy Wo for years and years. In fact it is the thing I look forward to most when I come back to the Island to visit my family. I have never experienced a terrible smell, certainly not above and beyond the usual odors of any chinese take out place and Joy Wo is definitely better than any of the chinese places to be found in Rocky Point. The only complaint I think one could legitimately have is that it is small--the customer area is roughly 12x14 and taken up by vending machines and a table reserved for the children of some of the employees as well as the couple of tables for eat-in guests. This is one of the best chinese food places I've ever eaten at no one I know doesn't like getting food from there. Also there are adorable chinese children--belonging to one of the cooks and the woman who typically mans the front counter (I think)--running around and being adorable a lot of the time. Once, I was unable to pay (having misplaced my wallet) but due to my repeat business they gave me the meal I was purchasing on the house with their thanks. The service, food and prices are all excellent. If you're in Shoreham, I suggest giving it a shot.
