A bit surprised at the low reviews, I quite enjoyed this place! Restaurant was spacious, service was very fast and we enjoyed everything we ate. Our favourites were the rice rolls (shrimp, beef, and chinese donut), eggplant with shrimp, and chicken feet. We were pleasantly surprised with the egg tarts, which came out fresh, crispy and warm. One gripe I had was with the bean curd roll with mushroom and pork, which we ordered for someone with a seafood allergy. We ordered this twice and the first time there were no issues, but the second one came with shrimp inside. This was most likely an accident as the one we ordered isn't supposed to contain shrimp, but there is another one on the menu that does. The mango pudding also tasted a bit strange and had a weird texture compared to other dimsum places. Overall, we had a good time here, and would come back for their dimsum and rice rolls. read more

I especially enjoyed talking to Sam, he had a great sense of humour and kept us entertained throughout our meal. We came at around 10am for breakfast. Before 11am you get 15% off on weekdays and on weekends it's 10% all day. Tea charge $1 per person Shiu mai dumplings - not bad. 2 shrimps in each. Strong mushroom flavour. The outside skin kind of melted though Steamed beef tendons- stomach was chewy. Tendon was okay soft but not the softest we've ever had. The flavour was okay Meat and shrimp fried dumpling - one of the better dishes. Very crispy and fresh. Nice chew. We liked the sa got on the inside that gave it a good crunch and sweetness. If you like a lot of meat in the filling, this is not for you Rice rolls with fish paste - this was disappointing. The inside fried tofu was not very crispy. The fish paste and rice roll had no flavour. Would not get again Pork octopus rice - rice isn't actually cooked in the claypot which is disappointing. Rice itself is cooked dry and there's no octopus flavoue in the pork octopus XO radish cake - this was actually pretty good. Lots of radish flavour and sausage flavour. The go-to items such as pork dumplings (siew mai) and shrimp dumplings (Har gow) were huge pieces and delicious. The steamed BBQ pork buns were fresh not frozen and steaming hot. You will have to make reservations even on a weekday, it is very popular unless you are willing to sit & wait. Our first time to Joyful & it was not disappointing. Ordered the usual & the food was good, typical dim sum menu. The chicken feet & the spare ribs were not that tender however the flavour is all there. Otherwise the rest of the items were flavourful, They are generous with the amount of tea leaves in your teapot, usually by the 4th - 5th refill, the tea is not that strong. Not here, even after several refills of hot water, the tea taste remains robust. That's because the tea leaves fills half the teapot. Service was good, they were efficient & polite. Enjoyed authentic dim sum here last week. It's my first time here and I really enjoyed their plain steamed rice rolls 腸粉. With the snow piling up today, I am really grateful I got to satisfy my rice roll cravings before the snowfall. Joyful sits next to Denny's on Kingsway and have free parking spots. Opens at 930am and offers 15% discount if you pay your bill before 11am. The place kinda feel like a "hidden gem" with its restaurant sign not highly visible. But seeing how the place quickly filled up around 10am on a weekday, I gather a lot of local and loyal repeat customers dine here. Repeat business is always a good sign. Nice and friendly service. Came here for dinner with 10 others Sunday night. We called ahead a couple days beforehand to make reservations. It's a little bit nicely decorated but isn't a super fancy ambience. There's a decent sized parking lot behind the restaurant that's shared with the other restaurants in the same plaza. To make ordering easier, we went with a 10 person set menu for $688 and ordered a veggie noodle dish for the one vegetarian present. It ended up being way too much food and probably could've fed 13 people. Overall I thought the dishes were okay but most tended toward the bland side. Good if you prefer to eat food with light oil and salt, but I personally would've preferred a little bit more salt in most of the dishes. Had dim sum with 3 of my friends. Book reservation for 11am. We were finishing up our food, when the waitress gave us our bill without asking at 10:45am....45 minutes after being seated. We paid the bill and gave them $15 tip on a $98.50 bill for 4. After we paid them, the waitress came back and said our table was already reserved for someone else. My handicapped friend had left her backpack on her chair to use the washroom, and the wait staffs started removing the dishes, while I was still trying to finish my food. We have not even been inside the restaurant for 1 hour and asked to vacant out table. Not very good service at all. Even Macdonald restaurants doesn't ask you to leave after 45 minutes. It is the only time we get to meet up with friends to see each other. Why go to restaurants, if you are asked to leave ASAP! The food was ok, But paying $115 for 6 dim sum plus a noodle dish for 4 people and also getting kicked out is not acceptable. None of us will go back! terrible service. read more

The place was packed with diners and people waiting. My rating is based on lunch only. The prices were on the high side due to Covid and inflation. Enjoyed this place so much, I got married here in September 2021. Service is always excellent. The staff tries.... and they work really hard given the restaurant is usually full. Peking duck is great. Some meat on the skin for the first dish and the tortillas are always light and chewy. The lettuce wrap portion is also very good. Tried the Salty Egg crab and lobster with the rice cakes. Really good, not too salty and the rice cakes are well done and I've been rice cakes for over 50 years. Some staff changes in the last few years and the manager Chris is no longer there but the staff always tries to please even if they don't recognize you. I'm pretty sure the food at our banquet was excellent, but sadly, I didn't get a chance to ear most of it as I was running around and enjoying seeing friends and family for the first time since covid started. read more

They did not have dim sum don't know if it's because it's after 5pm. Service is so forced. These people alway looks over your shoulder. Don't even ask if we're okay. But it's pretty typical for an asian resto for that. The price is ridiculous!! Over priced for any item. Beef gailan though is primo! Dim sum in Burnaby! Very good dim sum at this location. I guess based on how busy and the age group in this restaurant, the food must be pretty good, seems like I walked into a aarp convention . Everything we ordered was quite impressive as far as taste goes. One thing I did notice was the chicken feet were as plump as what I could get in the U S, the siu mai's however are almost twice the size and flavour compared to what is in the U S, also the meat is chopped and not pureed like what we get, also no hint of cornstarch. If you are looking for some Dim Sum - this place is it. First of all let's talk about parking. They have their own parking lot and there is plenty of street parking everywhere. However since I went on weekday there seems to be an ample amount of parking. When I entered the restaurant around 1:30 pm I thought that this place wasn't busy - and yep I was wrong. The restaurant was completely full, we had to wait about 15 mins to get a table for 2 which wasn't that bad. There was a number of people that came after us as they had to wait for their seat. Sat down, and there was a menu sheet where you can pick and choose your items, for those that didn't read Chinese there is also English as well. I ordered the following: Scallop Dumplings, Sticky Rice Wraps, Shrimp Spring Rolls, Shrimp Dumplings, Prawn Rice Rolls, and yes my partner today was thinking about shrimp. All the items were quite delicious, and here's the bonus you come during the mid afternoon there's a discount of 10% which was well worth it. Service wise, the waiters/waitress made sure we had enough tea, water and napkins. They were very quick and made sure we were well taken care of. The restaurant was quite clean and well organized despite the amount of people in this restaurant. The food came quick! The bill came a little over $40.00 quite fair for lunch. Joyful Seafood Restaurant is the name of the latest restaurant to occupy the spot on Kingsway in Burnaby that used to be New Starlet and Po King before that. We visited in early April and the place was already hopping on a Saturday morning (there's not many dim sum options in Burnaby). The wait was about 30+ minutes and partly due to the fact that the restaurant is a bit smallish. The other reason was probably all of the patrons who tried to cut the line by sitting themselves down whenever they saw a table empty up. We originally ordered the Beef Rice Roll ($6.58) based on the picture in the menu but what arrived at our table was far from what we saw in the picture. Still, the somewhat deconstructed version was fairly tasty but difficult to pick up. You'd think by now that we'd know better than to order a Shanghai dish from a restaurant that doesn't specialize in Shanghainese cuisine. However, we wound up ordering the Pan Fried Pork Buns ($6.58) here and I was a bit disappointed that it lacked the juicy pork filling and the noticeable char on the bottom of the buns. Instead, the bun was quite soft and fluffy (which wasn't necessarily a bad thing) but the filling was far from moist. If you're like me, anything deep-fried is probably a winner. The Deep Fried Silver Thread Roll with condensed milk ($4.98) is a bit of a confusing name for a dish but is basically a bun which has been deep-fried to a crisp and golden-hue. On the inside, layers (or threads) of soft, fluffy, white bread are just waiting to be dipped in the condensed milk. This big mountain of noodles is their Singapore-Style Rice Vermicelli ($16.98) and, as you can tell, a massive serving. The Eggplant Stuffed with Shrimp Paste ($6.58) turned out pretty good. Beef Omasum in Ginger Garlic Sauce ($6.58) otherwise known as bible tripe. The Chilled Osmanthus Gelatin ($4.98) actually arrived last - which is sometimes surprising as most Chinese restaurants just bring it out early on because it's already made (not sure if it just wasn't ready earlier or if they purposely waited until all of our other dishes were out). I found that most of the items were pretty good but service is typical of a Chinese restaurant and we were a bit put off by all of the rude diners trying to cut the line. Despite this, we wound up coming back for a revisit about 3 months later. At around 11am on a Saturday, the place was already full and there was a bit of a lineup in front of us. They initially told us it would be a 45-min wait but, as we were just a table for 2, they managed to fit us in within about 5 minutes (although we had to sit at a table near the entrance). We wound up ordering some of the same dishes that we had last time... such as the Beef Rice Roll ($6.98) and the Eggplant Stuffed with Shrimp Paste ($6.88)... both solid dishes (and I do appreciate that they cut the eggplant pieces the proper way). We also ordered a couple of dishes that we hadn't tried before... namely the Chicken Feet ($6.88), which was super tender, and the Har Gow ($6.88), which was stuffed with plump shrimp. To satisfy our carb cravings, we also ordered the Deep-Fried Silver Thread Roll with Condensed Milk ($5.38) and Braised E-Fu Noodles with Mixed Seafood ($20.38). Overall, some pretty good dim sum dishes here and they were still offering a 10% grand opening discount when we last visited. It does get quite busy here tho so best to come early. read more

My party of 4 had no reservation for dim sum but received paper menus and a pen to order, the hostess even coming outside to ask how we're doing and to help us decide. Seated after less than ten minutes anyway, and soon the food began arriving. Perfectly executed chive & shrimp fried dumplings was a good start. But to fully review this restaurant I must tell about the gai lan. It is tender, brilliant, chubby, and yet firm enough to gently snap when bitten. Also it is served large and very slightly oily, and near impossible to handle with slick plastic chopsticks. So I ask for scissors: no problem, a server quickly snips it into at least individual branches. And then I ask for the disposable bamboo chopsticks I prefer: no problem, everybody at my table gets them. Then I see the Kikkoman soy sauce, and I have to ask... do they have the thicker, less salty kind? Yes, no problem. I stopped there: One must be cruel to find better service. I've been looking for a dim sum restaurant ever since the Fortune House in Metrotown closed down (where did it go?). I've been to a few different locations looking for a spot close to home. Very close to home. And have not really managed to find anything that wowed me. Until I found Happy Flowers. I really like the dim sum here. I found it last week. I've already been twice and spent $250. My wife and I love dim sum and we love to order a lot. Our first visit here. We took my mother. In our second visit, we went back withmy mother, my wife's mom and dad and 3 of my 4 kids and made a big lunch of it. The customer service on our first visit was the best I've ever had at any dim sum restaurant. The server we had was very polite. Very considerate and very helpful. Usually at Dim Sum Restaurants, in my experience (and I don't hold it against them) but there's no personal or personality connection. I chalk it up to my being Canadian and only English speaking and not part of the Chinese culture ? This restaurant was excellent for making me feel welcome purely with great service. My second visit however wasn't the same when it came to the customer service we received the first time. The server we had shook his head (in a displeased manor) when initially we ordered water for drinks. . It's funny because my wife, my mom and I caught his IGNORANT gesture separately and we all looked at each other like "WOW really" haha Lucky the food here is delicious . Or I would have not returned because that's a difference maker for me. I'll tolerate bad service if your food is great and your close to home. I'll tolerate bad service to an extent. I'll just say he's having a bad day and hope to get. A different server next time round. But if your food sucks, bye bye. The food here is great.
