This place was so amazingly good, we came back for lunch the next day after having dinner the night before. There were five in our party and we all ordered one or two of our favorites so we had a table of many delicious selections that included broccoli beef, honey prawns, garlic string beans, steamed fish, and noodles. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. We enjoyed our meal immensely, and hence the reason we came back the next day for lunch. Dim sum place on Granville & 67th. Parking is available in an underground lot (not sure if free), as well as the side streets. The place is pretty nice and modern on the inside. Staff are friendly and professional. No problems here. Dim sum quality is quite good. Dishes are few bucks more than the competition, but this is expected. This is the W side after all. One thing that is nice is that the shrimp dumplings and siu mai are 5 per basket. The other dish that stands out is their signature roast duck. Nice and moist, and not too fatty. Came for a classic Chinese dinner tonight and we were happy with the meal that we had tonight complete with winter melon soup (small) and peking duck (2 courses). We started off with the Peking duck wraps and honestly, were a bit disappointed to see their skin having quite a few feathers still stuck! The pancakes are a little bit on the dry side but their pieces of duck skin still had a lot of meat (which I prefer). The duck lettuce wraps were great with plenty of duck meat, some veggies and crisps. The lettuce was also expertly trimmed making for a pleasant experience. The winter melon soup was a family favourite being light, flavourful and filled with an assortment of ingredients. There were shrimps, chicken, pork, different veggies and of course, huge chunks of winter melon! Spareribs with candied walnuts - the fam LOVED this as there was a plethora of crunchy and sweet walnuts. The spareribs were not too fatty and the sauce was the right amount, not too much. Crabmeat with Greens - a little too saucy for my preference but the pea tips they gave us were fresh, sweet and well cooked. There was an adequate amount of crab meat on top but not enough to make a huge difference. Scallops and egg white fried rice - our final dish of the night was a pale and boring looking fried rice that was a huge surprise for us as it was great in texture, nice and dry and had lots of large scallops. It was not too oily either and very flavourful. Overall, a nice place to have a classy dinner with service that wasnt exactly on top of everything (had to ask for soup to be refilled/plates to be changed) but they were very nice and came when flagged down. read more

As a dimsum lover, I was delighted when my co-worker suggested having dimsum here for a team get-together. There are quite a number of parking stalls reserved for Red Star in the complex's underground parkade, so one doesn't have to worry about finding parking. We ordered half a duck, plus a variety of dimsum staples, including some of my faves: deep fried spring rolls (filled with prawn), siu mai (pork & prawn stuffing), har gow (fresh prawn inside), xiao long bao (soupy meat dumplings), and egg tarts. I also tried a duck-filled pastry for the first time, which I really liked! It tasted similar to the bbq pork-filled version that I like. The chrysanthemum tea we got was refreshing and aromatic, a good tea to help wash down the oilier dishes. Overall, excellent service and delicious food. I'll definitely be back again! read more

Wow! Amazing seafood, well prepared just as I remembered from my HK days. Every time I come visit my parents in Vancouver, I make sure to organize at least two feasts at Red Star. What I order is predictably the same with minor additions each time. Start with house shark fin soup, followed by whole Peking duck prepared two ways, steamed live shrimps, the king crab three ways. For a group of 5-6, that's plenty. The house deserts rounds out the meal. Services are great because they have people! Best meal of our Vancouver trip. We had a party of 16 so experienced a myriad of dishes, but sadly not one photo. The Peking Duck and salted fish fried rice were the excellent standouts. Meeting up with friends we haven't seen for a while is always great. Nothing like going for a banquet style dinner at a chinese food restaurant. We started off with their Peking (Beijing) Duck and loved the crispiness of the skin. It seemed liked it was smallish but the flavour made up for it. Next up is one of my favourite vegetables. Pea sprouts! Simply blanched and then cooked with garlic, it's sooooo good! Then the duck lettuce wrap is always a nice second part of the Peking Duck experience. We also ordered what I call deep fried shrimp slathered in mayo and topped off with honey crusted walnuts. Might sound weird but the combo is delicious. Can't have a meal without sweet & sour pork! Red star offers a more premium dining dim sum experience. We come here due to the higher quality and finer dining environment. Staff is almost always more friendly than some of the more popular dim sum spots in town (but this is almost like comparing a restaurant to a Cafe), and free underground parking is available. We have been here quite a few times throughout the years, and have enjoyed anything we have ordered off their dim sum menu. We'll continue to come whenever we are in town. read more

We enjoy coming to this location for good quality, clean dim sum without having to go into Richmond. The food has always been anywhere from good to excellent. We usually focus on seafood, but their squab is particularly good. The only area that we are consistently disappointed with is that their deep fried items tend to be quite greasy, so we usually avoid it. Normally, this place is packed and you have to wade through a throng of 20++people in line to see the host/ess (make a reservation!), but alas, this weekend the place was barely full and absolutely nobody in line. I suspect that the COVID-19 scare has impacted this place like so many other restaurants. I noted that this weekend, the dim sum menu was significantly smaller than normal, with many of the usual favourites (pan fried seafood dumplings, pan fried radish cake, etc) were not available. That said, maybe because it wasn't as busy, and the menu smaller, that everything we had was excellent (with the exception of the deep fried dumplings which we found a bit too greasy). I've been to Red Star before and was blown away by the food during my first visit. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same this time again. Actually, the food wasn't bad at all but there were other things like hair on our plate and lots of small hair on the napkins. The service was really good, and our waiter, Michael was exceptional. We ordered about 10 different dishes, not all of them are in my photos because we finished a couple of dishes before I managed to take my photos. I believe we ordered the following dishes: - Crispy duck skin and pancakes - scallops on tofu - pepper beef and mushrooms - crispy fried chicken - fried rice - shrimp in egg yolk - Beef noodles with enoki mushrooms - stir fried Duck and lettuce wraps - Shiitake mushrooms, broccoli and nom Choy - Honey garlic pork - Red bean soup. There were 10 of us in our group and we were hungry. We thought we hadn't ordered enough food but we actually ordered more than enough and there were 3 dishes that we took home. Everything was really good but I think most dishes were overly salted, especially the beef dish with mushrooms. Personally, I don't like sweet dishes so the honey garlic pork and the black bean soup didn't really work for me. My friends enjoyed them though. I am not a huge fan of steamed scallops so I didn't try them but based on feedback from the others, it was okay. I think we all like our Scollops nicely seared. The stir fried duck with lettuce wraps were exceptional. Packed with loads of flavour and just a really balanced dish. If you want a nice, fresh and healthy dish, go for the shiitake mushroom, broccoli and bok Choy dish. Just delicious! What I also really enjoyed was the shrimp dish, cooked with egg yolk. Who knew this could make such a delicious unhealthy dish but once in a blue moon, it's just divine! The winner for me was the crispy duck, as always. I could've just eaten the duck and be satisfied but dinner but everything else was quite good. We paid about $400, including tips for everything. I've been here for years, both for dim sum lunch and dinners ranging from family dinners to special celebrations. The meals have been mostly good, but tonight was oddly...odd. We ordered mostly classic ordinary dishes like crispy skin chicken, seafood tofu soup, beef, prawns, deep fried oysters, and vegetables. We have comments on both the food and the service. Food was mediocre. Nothing spectacular (except for the price). Chicken was dry. Deep fried prawns were chewy, including the walnuts that came with it. Beef was only warm. Vegetables was bland. Deep fried oysters was probably the biggest surprise. At $35, we only got EIGHT pieces. They were good, but certainly not spectacular. Service was unusual as each dish arrived individually with a 5-10 minute interval between each dish. This made it a slow meal. By the time the last two dishes came, we were getting full, not because of the amount we ate, but due to the time we waited. One of the bowls served to us was not only stained, but actually had a piece of vegetable left behind! Lost a bit of my appetite there. Then at the end, we had the almond milk dessert with egg white. It was just OK. A bit watery, and only a bit of egg white. The big surprise was that it cost $27!! We rather doubt they ground almond nuts to make this. More likely from powder. We could certainly have done better with that. So it was a bit of a let down. Had this been my first time there, this would have been a 1 or 2 star rating. I've kept it at 3 due to past experiences, which were good but still, nothing outstanding. Hopefully, they get it together soon! read more

My family and I are regulars at the Granville Street (Vancouver) location. For about eight years now, any time we have a family dinner or meal, Red star is our go-to so heads up!!! my review is more biased than others. To be honest, I have grown sick of chinese food and seafood restaurants (海鲜酒家) because there was a period of time where my family would come here for dimsum and then later again for dinner! I think I've tried everything on their menu already. However, my family's loyalty to the Granville location is not due to our relationship (friendship at this point) with the staff but because the food here really is delicious. Whether it be the seafood, the meat, veggies or desert--everything is fresh and you can taste it! Whenever we have relatives or friends from overseas, we always take or recommend them to Red Star Granville location--that's how confident we are about this place. Red Star (Granville) holds a special place in my heart as many special occasions were celebrated here and the staff have watched me grow from a little girl to a young adult. Overpriced dimsum for the quality/taste that you get. All the dishes ordered are barely ok to terrible (so left unfinished). At $6.38 for overly garlicked spare ribs to $7.38 for overly gingered beef omasum (tripe). Basic dishes aren't even done well. Sticky rice wrap - bland and left a weird aftertaste. Chinese donut rice roll - burnt/stale tasting donut. BBQ Duck Bun - taste ok but you can't tell its duck. It taste exactly like the BBQ Pork Bun. Add $1.75/pp for tea. If it was OK food for a lower price, it would be less offensive but that's not what you'll get here. Top it off with subpar service (won't seat us even though plenty of seating because they wanted to wait for a smaller table cramped at the back). The lotus wrapped sticky rice, sui mai, prawn spring rolls, stir fried pea tips tasted standard as well. Nothing exceptional. Exceptions noted: Prawn dumplings. These were massive. I would say they give the ones at Western Lake a run for the money. One difference tho, these had no paste like the ones at Western Lake. These were ALL prawn. No filler, no paste. Roast duck pastry. Never seen these before. Quite tasty and the pastry was made with butter or lard, (more likely the latter). A little on the sweet side. Fried wild rice with dungeness crab, chicken(?) and dried scallops. This was a wicked killer dish. I could eat this all day. Seriously. Nice wok flavour on the wild rice, which really surprised me. Why hasn't anyone else thought of this? However, this comes at a price. $38 for a standard sized main rice/noodle dish. Yeah, it's not cheap. Live a little and try it. The food is too greasy, I, my mom and her friends went there to dine, and we booked a room instead of eating outside ever since the summer for the chinese new year, however the waiter just took away our reservation and just gave it to others as they thought that the number of people we have had decreased. The food came up really slow and we have waited for 20 minutes and only 1 dish was brought up. My family and I never decided to go there ever again. Went once recently for dinner. Spicy deep fried sparibs were one of the the best I've had. Unique approach to the batter which was a little more sturdy than others which are more airy. The quality of the veggies even stood out (egg tofu w veggie and pea tips). The beef patty was also a unique and well prepared dinner item, similar flavour to the beef meatball at dim sum. Mango pudding was unique and well done. Good balance of creamy to fruity, and came with some mango sauce and evaporated milk in the dish. Service was very good from all servers which seemed to be from 3 different generations, and the young guys English was very good. Even addressed our member as "mam" which was funny. read more

The quality of food here is excellent. Dim sum quality is as good as what you'll find in Hong Kong. As such this place is packed! Even with a reservation you'll be waiting for a bit. This is an amazing place for dim sum! We came here on Christmas Day and it was delicious. The food here is very good and the price isn't too bad. * Steam pork dumpling w/ tobiko ($5.40) ~ these were super flavourful and bouncy texture. Very tender pork too. * Bean curd sheet wrapped with minced shrimp paste ($8.38) ~ nicely wrapped and the shrimp paste was flavourful and delicious. * Spring roll ($7.88) ~ super crunchy and garlic flavoured! One of the best! * Sticky rice ($7.98) ~ who doesn't like lotus sticky rice? Nice amount of filling to rice ratio. * Prawn rice noodle ($7.98) ~ very smooth rice noodles and perfectly cooked shrimps. * Bbq duck noodles ($9.38) ~ very flavourful duck, and the noodles were nice and chewy. Sweet and salty contrast is perfect! * Soy sauce rice roll ($10.98) ~ comfort food, very well dressed. * Shredded chicken cold cut ($11.98) ~ so good! Love the chicken, wish the crunchy part was crunchier though. * Bbq duck pastry ($7.68) ~ 100% my fav dish. 4 stars but -1 for service. Good food - better than the Richmond location. Street parking available. Reservations highly recommended. Also can reserve certain dishes that require preparation or are very popular, such as the suckling pig. We had reserved a suckling pig and wintermelon soup. We also ordered a half chicken and a tofu and vegetable dish. I was not too happy that the dishes did not come in order. The suckling pig is supposed to come first as appetizer. Then it is supposed to be the wintermelon soup. Then the chicken and tofu/vegetable dish. Instead, we got the chicken, suckling pig, and wintermelon soup in that order. Chicken - nothing special. Pretty good I guess. Suckling pig - amazing. Very expensive of course, but soooo delicious. Crispy top, flavourful meat. I love this dish. Wintermelon soup - presentation not as nice as the one I had recently in Toronto. Not many duck pieces, but there were scallops, shrimp pieces, crab pieces, dried scallops, ham, and chicken chunks. The soup was not salty. Quite nice for those who don't like super salty broths. When the wintermelon soup was brought out, they left it on a table near us but did not serve immediately. After 10 minutes of waiting, we had to ask multiple servers to serve the soup to us. The captain (no name tag, black suit) ended up doing it for us, without a word or a smile. This was not professional at all. Food should be served immediately when it has left the kitchen! At least throughout the meal they were compliant with refilling our soup bowls. I would have preferred if they were more careful when serving the soup - spilling it over the sides is not nice when we are paying $52 for the dish. I was disappointed that the soup was not placed on our table, but I guess it was because the table was too small for it. I would have liked the photo opportunity. I will probably be back, but not for the soup. Next time I would get the suckling pig and other dishes to accompany it. read more

We had lunch and dinner at this restaurant in the past. Yesterday we came here for a Mother's Day lunch. We made reservation two weeks ago. Even though we had made reservation, the wait for a table was still very long. More than half an hour.... Lots of people were waiting for tables. The foyer or entrance of the restaurant was packed. Some customers had to wait outside the restaurant. It was ridiculously packed. We waited to be seated. The service was quite good even though the restaurant was busy full of customers. Surprisingly a few servers took care of our table. Not bad! We ordered a few dishes of food and some dim sum for lunch. Everything tasted great. We didn't have any complaints about it. We loved their roasted squabs and BBQ duck. The skin was crispy and tasty. This restaurant is located on Granville Street in Vancouver. There are not too many good Chinese restaurants around that neighbourhood. Be expected to pay a little bit more, but it was worth for the wait if you would like to eat good food. There is an underground parking next to the restaurant but not a lot of parking stalls that belong to this restaurant, so I would highly recommend people to look for street parking directly. Don't even drive into the small underground parking and get stuck that you have to wait to go in and out of the parking lot. There is free street parking just a couple blocks away. read more

Reservation on Saturday noon means nothing to the restaurant. Made reservation at 12:45pm but our table was given to other customers that know the staff. Waited for 45 minutes before we were seated. Food was very good though, especially the Sticky Rice with chicken wrapped in lotus leaf. The best I ever tasted in my life and I have eaten A Lot of Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf in my life! Other dimsum dishes we ordered were very good also, see attached photos. 4 of us ordered 10 dishes but we had left overs enough for one more person. Forgot to take some photos because I was getting Hangry! Over all. Food quality 9/10, service 8/10 once we got our table. Red Star is my flavour dinner restaurant and my family goes there for dinner regularly, however, I didn't realize no dinner or update review since 2010. The service is great if they are not too busy, the staffs are fast and efficient. In general, food is not greasy but very favorable. Most important thing is the quality of food and the portion size is acceptable. Great place to go with big party too. I would say their roasted piglet and duck are the best in town even though it's a bit expensive! Roasted piglet so crispy and duck so delicious! Seafood dishes were excellent too! Fresh and cooked perfectly. They always give 2 kinds of dessert after meal (red bean soup and lotus paste cake). Lovely! read more
