I want to share my experience. I have never had my hair professionally done before, so I didn't really know what to expect. I simply wanted to go darker by adding lowlights to my natural copper hair. I showed a reference photo and was told that to achieve the look, I would need highlights first and then an all-over color. I also asked for layers and curtain bangs without losing too much length (my hair was last measured at 30 inches). I am 17 and was getting my hair done for my birthday. I made it very clear that I wanted to keep everything as natural as possible--no heavy or extreme colors, and nothing so dark that it would look unnatural as it grew out. At first, I liked the color when it was wet. Once it was dried and styled, the lighting in her studio made it look close to what I had imagined, so I initially believed it was done correctly. However, I also wanted a butterfly cut with layers while keeping my length. Joy responded with, "That's not happening. I don't care what you want." After drying, my mother and I had to practically fight just to get her to blend my curtain bangs and make them wispy (I have very thick hair). When my mom tried to stand up for me, Joy became combative and rude. Every time I mentioned layers, she would say things like, "No, you don't want layers. I promise layers won't look good. I'm not doing layers." I felt pressured to trust her because she said she's been doing hair since 1993, and her reviews initially seemed good. After looking again, none of the reviews are recent (all over three years old), and the most recent one is extremely negative. I paid $120 for what I thought I loved--aside from not getting layers--but the moment I left, I felt overwhelming dread. In the car, I noticed my ends were the exact same color as my original hair, even though she supposedly did an all-over copper brown. My roots are a very dark, unnatural red under my top layer of hair, almost peekaboo-style, which is absolutely not what I wanted. The colors do not blend, and I can't even see the highlights she claimed to put in. After researching, it's clear the color was not left on long enough. The color on the left side of my roots was left much longer than the right side, and my ends--like I mentioned--are completely unchanged. She applied color, aggressively "massaged" it in, washed her hands and bowl, and then rinsed and shampooed my hair. The color was on my ends for maybe five minutes. The entire appointment lasted from 5:45 PM to 8:24 PM and felt rushed and extremely unprofessional. As someone who has never done anything to their hair besides simple trims, I didn't know what was normal or what to question. I felt forced into what she wanted instead of what I asked for. She was rude to my mother when she tried to advocate for me, and now my hair is uneven, poorly colored, and badly blended--especially the bangs. She was still paid $120 for a service I am deeply unhappy with, and this experience has caused me severe emotional distress. I've been crying for hours. I will never be going back to Joy, and I do not recommend her services. Also after my mother and I did some more research, all her hair images are from Pinterest. We reversed imaged searched her pictures they are ALL from Pinterest. I also want to note that her house smelled of marijuana. read more

Joy is a wonderful stylist. She works out of a comfortable, well appointed studio in her home. Lots of personal attention and care, with a full shampoo and style included with my haircut cut. I find the whole process very relaxing. When my hair was longer I tended to cut it myself because I'd had way too many bad experiences with stylists not listening and giving me terrible haircuts. Now that I have shorter hair, I needed someone who wouldn't make me cry! Joy is the first stylist I've had who listens and has actually given me great haircuts. I've loved both my haircuts with her and will definitely be back. The only thing I feel weird about is the automatic tipping calculator on her payment screen. I know you aren't supposed to feel obligated to tip a salon owner because the entire fee goes to them already (eg: they aren't renting their space). But I can feel self-imposed pressure (because it's on the screen, not because of Joy) to add a tip anyway. Otherwise, no complaints! read more

This hairstylist is awful. Only go there if you want to catch Covid-19. She gave me serious attitude when I asked her to wear a mask. In addition, the haircut was about 4 inches shorter than requested and looked quite different from the photo provided. She burned me twice and acted like it was nothing. I found Joy's hair design online a couple years ago. I went in for a consultation because my natural hair color is salt and pepper and I had been coloring my hair blonde. I wanted to find a way to blend colors so I could decrease the maintenance and make my hair look more natural without spending a fortune every month. I've been a client of Joy's for a couple of years and she is the best in the county. I especially love her talent with the coloring of my hair. She is absolutely a delight to see as I know I will walk out of her salon feeling and looking like a million bucks! I had such a wonderful experience having my hair done by Joy today! She was very welcoming, friendly, and made me feel like a priority throughout the whole appointment. I really appreciated that before she cut and highlighted my hair she made sure she understood what I wanted and knew what would look best for my hair type. When it comes to hair, you can tell that she really knows her stuff. By the end of the appointment my chunky layers (botched by a previous stylist) were all smoothed out and looked very natural. I was given a gift certificate for Joy Kincaid and it could not have come at a better time. Joy was able to make the appointment the next day after I phoned, and it was at a super convenient 10 am! Having never met before, she immediately took one look at me and told me that she could do a lot to make my hair far better both in color and condition. This was refreshing to meet someone who "tells it like it is", not insulting or demeaning, but certainly the truth and a truth that needed to be told and rectified. After talking with her for a few minutes, she took me to the sink, shampooed, then placed a deep conditioner and had me under the dryer for a while. Then, she cut it, removing a lot of fried out ends. She was careful and thoughtful as to what she visioned for my hair and my best look. She kept most of the length but removed a lot of the fried hair. Then, she went to work on the color. My hair had gotten so light that people would comment on it, saying "your hair has gotten so light"....these are the comments I have heard, not anything like "Your hair is pretty". Because it is too washed out and dull. Well, not anymore. Joy did a full head of foils in both highlight and lowlight colors. No bleach was applied to my scalp...none. It was all in foils. No burning scalp experience like I have become accustomed to. Instantly, when she removed the foil, and I saw it as it was combed out, I was very surprised, pleasantly I might add! Joy put my natural, youthful color back in my hair....but the odd thing is that i did not tell her or show her a photo or even have a clue that this could be done! I did not even know that this was the best thing to do! I would have been fine if she had just done the roots and a trim, but I got soooo much more than I expected was possible. As she dried it and then styled it, I could not believe my eyes. Yes, I am still blonde, but not like before...nothing like before. Joy is truly a master colorist. I am impressed, and oh-so grateful. I have never been so disappointed or upset with my hair. I have come to Joy a few times expressing what I wanted, at first I knew it would take time to get there because I needed a full color correction to get the blonde that I was looking for. Unfortunately, since going back time and time again, I have found that she doesn't listen to what I want and runs on her own schedule, even when I have told her that I have other places that I need to be and showed her exactly what I want done. I understand that sometimes hair can take longer than expected, however, I was not expecting to be blamed or guilt-tripped when I told her that I had other places that I needed to be, (especially after being there for 4 plus hours) and she needed to take care of the mistakes that she had done to my hair first. She is also very rough with my hair and with my head. I have a soft head(which was expressed to her multiple times) and instead of working with me to understand the certain ways to work with it, she would rip a brush(and especially her fingers with rings on) through it and yank my head back any and every time my hair is done. I have left Joy's with my head aching and even burning from the amount of product and torture that my hair/head has been through. I have found that even days after I am still feeling the effects of the pain that she has caused my head. Even after mistakes were made, I was still charged a ridiculous amount that I felt I shouldn't have had to pay, considering it was nothing like what I wanted, and it was her mistakes. This particular time, I went in for root touch up and more highlights and possible lowlights, with face framing. While she was doing my hair, I found that she would often try to talk me into doing something completely different than what I wanted, and when I would say, "Oh I'm good, I just want to do what I came into do, like the picture." She would persist by talking over me and pushing me until she'd just end up doing what she wanted to do anyways. I left with darker hair(so far from the picture of the blonde hair that I wanted, more close to an ash brown, mushroom looking hair cut.), uneven layers, and now I have long bangs. It is so far off from what I wanted that it is asinine to even comprehend that she thought this was what I told her I wanted when I went into the appointment. I have found that after leaving I often feel worse about myself because I know that I did not get even close to what I wanted, and even cried about it because I look so different than how I did before going into the appointment. I am mortified and traumatized by this whole experience. After this last appointment I will never go back and I wouldn't recommend anyone else to go there either. read more

Idaho Falls --- What are you waiting for? GO! Joy is the best you can get! I've been to her twice. Once when she was at Retreat Day Spa and the second time after she had relocated her business. Let me tell you how Joy rescued me: After we relocated, I had been trying different stylists, in Idaho Falls, for over 2 years, but was never happy with the cuts I was given. When I got the ULTIMATE bad cut, my husband so kindly said, "You paid for THAT?" Not only was it the most horrible, uneven, lop-sided cut, I've EVER had, but my daughter was getting ready to graduate with her PhD. It was a big family event. I didn't want to look terrible, in all the pictures. I decided to give Joy a try. Joy talked with me for about 30 minutes, about my lifestyle and how much effort I usually put into maintaining my hair styles. I love being outdoors, hiking, snowshoeing, etc. Needless to say, for me, the less maintenance required, the better! We talked about what I thought I wanted, cut-wise, which was "It looks terrible! Chop it off!". After listening to everything I had to say, Joy made suggestions about cuts that she thought would look good on me and be easy to maintain. I went with Joy's suggestions and let her wield her scissors. All I can say is, "THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!" My husband commented on how much better my hair looked. (That's a HUGE compliment!) My best friend who now lives in Michigan came for a visit. She had heard ALL my hair cut travails, seen the haircuts I'd had over the years and told me that she really liked the cut Joy gave me. For me, going to the hair dresser is like going to the dentist. I hate getting my hair cut and colored. I can never find somebody that I like and does a good job. I usually get my hair done twice a year because that's how much I hate it. Yesterday, I finally decided that I needed to get it done bc the grays were taking over my hair! It was looking pretty horrendous. I had Joy do my hair and I have to say, she is my favorite hair dresser ever!!! This lady knows exactly what she's doing. She will do whatever you ask or even make a suggestion. I was getting a cut and color but then she suggested some highlights. I never do highlights, but so happy I had it done. Joy does a fabulous job on my hair! She is very attentive and has a great eye for blonde. I have quite long hair (to the small of my back)and it takes a long time to color, trim, and dry that much hair. However, she never makes me feel rushed and she takes her time in getting it just right. Joy has a very calm demeanor and makes you feel right at home.
