Two slices tomato, one party green unripe, the other the very end slice. Lettuce was an outer leaf hard dry. Totally uneatable entree. Fish was a gelatinous texture similar to stiff yogurt. Surely frozen, microwaved and exceedingly over cooked. Service excellent and apologetic. Asked what they should do to make it a better experience. I suggested hiring a chef. We were pleasantly surprised on our first visit. We were served by Doreen who was very friendly and accommodating. After reviewing the menu with us we had the creamy Parmesan Alfredo with shrimp and the Italian Parmesan Chicken. Doreen brought us a sample of the chicken soup which was delicious as was our meal. We have been hearing quite a bit about JR Chophouse & decided to give it a try. Ugh. We were hopeful that there was a new fine dining option in Franklin. Unfortunately, not there yet. To start - the food was a solid B+. Some items were really well prepared and presented as one would hope. But overall, we were hoping for an A. The biggest negative (and it paralleled everything we've heard - was the service. No one was really attentive. No welcoming greeting or introduction Our first encounter was our server that literally said - "what can I get you"? Once our food arrived "here you go" - we had to wave our server over. Never checked back / no water refills, no plate clearing. We bought a bottle of wine and did all the pouring (not a big deal, we know how to do it , but what about experience? We were there on a Friday and there were only two other tables (that's a bad sign). What really capped the evening was turning off the music and bringing up the lights 25 minutes before close. They even started sweeping around our table. When we said we were sorry to be keeping them there they replied that they could prepare our wine to take home. Sigh. Franklin desperately wants a comfortable, inviting fine dining experience. Unless they dramatically change the service - I'm afraid this one won't make it. If you did - it could be a gem. read more

Oof this place was not good - somehow something was off on about everything we ordered. We're not offered a drink menu at first - two drinks were weak and one was way too strong to drink. The apps were okay - the mozzarella pops were bland and the fries were all undercooked. My friends roast beef sandwich tasted like it had cinnamon in it, my friends chicken fingers were fried in the same oil the fish was, the French onion soup was made with Swiss cheese and a hot dog bun? The salad was covered in dressing and the chicken in it was obviously preheated premade. The server got our checks wrong, she did ask if everything was okay, but we were just all unhappy and didn't wanna deal with it - all of our food was barely eaten and drank... would not eat here again. I spent Thanksgiving with my family at the Chophouse, my card was left there accidentally, I called they said my card was not there. Two days later my card was charged again at the restaurant for a different amount. I went in and called 3 times leaving contact information each time and 3 weeks later still have not heard back. I have had better customer service from McDonalds. What a joke! A server had to have my card for it to get used and to have no response from management from what is supposed to be a high end restaurant it totally unacceptable!! read more

We came here for my friend's bachelorette trip. My food was absolutely delicious, however the service left much to be desired. The restaurant seemed to be decently staffed, but we had to wait 10 minutes to get our waitress's attention in order to get more water. We waited almost 45 minutes for our food, and the kitchen read the ticket wrong and didn't make one person's food. Thankfully her meal was comped. What an awesome experience. We came to the mountains to spend Thanksgiving and go to a Christmas tree farm. We decided to come to Root and Barrel after we arrived at our cabin. We took advantage of the half price appetizers and had pork belly and wings. Both were cooked to perfection and tasted great. My wife had a salad and her own order of pork belly for her dinner. Both kids and myself had the chicken fettuccine. It was very good and everyone enjoyed it. Flavors were great and we all would recommend it. Mei was our server and did a fantastic job. This is a beautiful restaurant and I've been hopeful after each new owner/management/name change but once again the food and service is disappointing at best. Caesar salad dressing is advertised as homemade but had a very odd flavor and I could only eat two bites. I had a Philly cheese steak special which was dry and flavorless. I will say the sweet potato fries are great. Staff was okay but not very friendly and welcoming. They never once asked how our meal was and didn't even comment when they cleared my uneaten salad. Not that I wanted it comped but if they cared at all I would think they would encourage feedback. I feel they are overpriced on top of it. I had high hopes for this restaurant. I made reservations almost a week ago. We got there about 15 minutes before our reservation. Waited until our actual reservation time and were seated in a back room that looked like a storage room. See photo. I did not get a picture of the half moon booth with dirty dishes most of the time we were there or the vacuum in the corner. When couples make a reservation knowing they will be spending $150+ on dinner, they do not expect to be seated in what feels like a storage room. It was us and 2 other tables the whole hour and a half we were there. There was a couple behind us. The girl asked if we felt like redheaded step children and yes we did. By the way, a group of 5 that came in after us with no reservations were seated in the main dining area. Please tell me what we did to deserve the seating we received. On a positive note, Faith was very nice and the food was good. Will we return, probably not seeing how guests with reservations are treated on the first visit. I've been to Hall's Chophouse and Oaks Steakhouse among others and were not seated in some back storage room. Very disappointed. read more

They could give you six of them instead of five is what I was thinking when they brought them out. The pub fries were okay but lacking in the bacon department. This was our first time to the Root and Barrel. The menu offered a nice selection of interesting takes on classic items. Thanks to Covid19, the hostess took our temperature as we came in. She did this without a word so I was a bit taken aback when she pointed the thermometer between my eyes. I guess i should just be glad it was not a rectal thermometer. Once seated we ordered the fried pimento cheese balls and they were amazing. We did have to eventually ask someone to have our server come by as she did not come back to take meal order. When waiting for our order they served us bread which We observed mole on bottom surface of bread. Told waiter and he had manager come to our table to observe mole on bread. Manager apologized and took bread away and sent out more bread. We decided not to stay and eat there due to manager seemed not to be concerned about mole on bread. 5 Star Rating for sure. Finding a restaurant like this in a small NC mountain town is a real joy. The decor and ambiance (and the entire experience) are what you would expect to see in Charleston, Atlanta, etc. Noah waited on us and provided excellent service. Started with pimento cheese appetizer with flat bread which was ample serving for 4. I had the Mountain trout. Reasonably priced entrees. The wine list was surprising - many wines by the glass at realistic pricing. Looking forward to a return visit. read more

The decor was impressive; beautiful light fixtures and decorations. The showstopper for our group was the R & B meat and cheese plate. It was simply delicious, and included salami, pimento cheese, red wine cheese, pickles, nuts, fruit, okra, infused sorghum, and bread slices. Oh, but wait, if you want a steak, they will bring the dinner menu out to you' so you can order the most expensive option on the dinner menu, but nothing more than steak. Get real! if you can cook steak, you can cook salmon or your other dinner options. This is elementary.
