I was craving peach cobbler so bad and stopped in expecting to get my socks blown off. I popped in and grabbed two peach cobblers to go. I pulled the cobbler out the bag to see they were individual pies poorly wrapped. Juice all over the place. I tried my best to be positive and pop them in the oven.. maybe the flavor would redeem cold ass cobbler. Wrong! It was a bland mess, legit canned peaches and a dash of standard cobbler flavors. I give this bbq 5 freaking stars!!! The meat is outstanding and tender. The smoke and flavor is a work of art, but the sauce, the sauce is the faithful side kick. I love bbq that can stand with or without the sauce and this bbq does. It is consistently cooked! I hear at least 4 times a month. It's my treat to myself and it's worth it! The sides are great too. The baked mac and cheese is exceptional and the baked beans will make you slap somebody's momma! For me I didn't love the potato salad or greens. I gave them each a 3. But that personal preference. Takeout Review We were craving BBQ and found JR's on yelp - reviews looked pretty good but when I re-read some of the reviews again, many did mention that their experience has been inconsistent - very good on some days not so good on other days. I must've picked an off day which is very unfortunate since I LOVE bbq & have been choosing places to support very carefully. i've eaten a lot of BBQ in my time - all around LA and also when I traveled to other states (including TN-Memphis). This was probably my lease favorite ever, 2 stars only because I'm being very nice. The baby back rib, brisket, rib tip, beef hot link -all extremely dry. I had to slather it with their bbq sauce (which was just ok). Their sides - coleslaw was not my favorite. Their potato salad was probably the best thing I had and it was just so-so. Though my experience was poor, it seems like this place is a favorite for many Angelinos so like I already mentioned, I may have experienced a very "off" day. A toilet-hugging experience. Don't. Just. Don't. This place cost me $74 for take-out dinner for two, and a day and a half of work to follow... I ordered two 2 meat combos; one with brisket and beef ribs, the other with rib tips and sausage. Both came with coleslaw and potato salad. $68.xx + tip came to ~$74 total. I was offended by the price from the get go, but had high hopes for a mind blowing experience I wasted no time unboxing and devouring my meal. To my dismay, none of the meats tasted good. Truly, not a single one of the four were at all noteworthy. They lacked flavor, texture, did not taste fresh, and the sauces were lacking, too, so no saving the meal there The potato salad was truly awful and lacking in portion size (just one plastic ramekin size serving per two-meat combo). It lacked flavor and was nothing special. I'm not picky, but this didn't make the cut --straight to the trash it went The coleslaw tasted good --it wasn't heavy or very sweet. Felt more like a slightly over-dressed cabbage salad. I didn't mind it, and I'm not a coleslaw person. It was also lacking in portion size (one plastic ramekin size serving) The corn bread (cost extra) was the real masterpiece of this meal --probably because it was sweet and moist. The serving size was that of a small muffin. It tasted great actually. I wish my entire meal were the coleslaw and cornbread --would've served as a much better experience Sock-it-to-me cake -- basically a dense cinnamon mini loaf. Dry, doughy, with cheap Betty Crocker-esq frosting thinly spread across the top. Basically inedible. I had two bites and trashed the rest. Did I mention I'm generally not a picky eater? This was quite disappointing The next day: I had to take the day off work; I woke up feeling absolutely terrible and was physically ill for a day and a half to follow. Let's just say the rib tips did not sit well with me and ended up coming out the same way they went in. As someone with a stomach built from steel, this REALLY upset me (physically and psychologically). I had the pleasure to order from Jr's BBQ on La Cienega today. I've been to this location a few times over the past 15+ years. I've grown to love this place throughout the years. The food is spot on and flavorful. It can be easy to miss finding this location if you are traveling northbound on La Cienega. Today however I ordered the full slab of pork ribs with a half-pound of links with potato salad and baked beans. The food was superb and hot on the go. I placed the order ahead of time and the food was ready upon pickup with no hassle. The potato salad is freshly made and spot on. The pork ribs were good, but I wish I had ordered more sauce. The links were very good also with no complaints. The baked beans were apparently from the can, with an addition of pork, but I enjoyed them. As I stated earlier it's hard to find a decent BBQ place in Los Angeles which can be unfortunate to many, but this is a spot I reccomend. read more

Was there 1 hour after open and Sweet tea slightly going sour, ribs were ok and brisket was dry. Also spices on ribs were bland. Now I have a high standard for BBQ as I grew up in the south and have a good idea what I should be getting. The sweet tea was properly sweet, but was either old or in a bad container or mixed with old tea. The ribs were the best part of the meal, they held a bite and were not too fall off the bone but bland, and the brisket was very dry. I have a feeling if you order a sandwich and it was smothered in sauce you would have no idea and it would be good but on its own it doesn't shine. The food didn't take long to come out at all. Probably 10 minutes at the most. He thanked me and invited me back. The bbq aroma filled my car the entire way home. Once I got home I tore open the bag and went to work. The Mac n cheese was good and creamy. The chicken links were delicious as well. Memphis style BBQ is quite different from other styles in that the meat is served dry, meaning it's not slathered in sauce. Rather the sauce is served on the side. So with Memphis style it's all about the seasoning on the rub. I'm not claiming to be an expert on BBQ, but I do know there are a few things that should always be present in good to great barbecued meats. They should have great seasoning, be tender and juicy, and should have a great flavor of smoke and that ever important smoke ring. This place fell short on all accounts. And the reasons run beyond missing all of the points above. Take a look at my pictures and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'll break down the entire meal starting with the beef brisket: Beef Brisket - this was the most disappointing part of the entire meal. I'm sure when this meat was made the day before it might have been pretty good. But I know when dried meat has been steamed and this brisket was the perfect example of it. Perhaps it was the re-steaming that stripped it of its flavor. The beef crumbled apart in my hand and not in a good way. It was a bland brown color all the way through indicative of a reheat. Zero flavor whatsoever. Beef Ribs - the beef ribs were better than average and large. But again there were some hints of flavor but that was about it. And it did have a nice smoke ring. With Memphis style barbecue the ribs should have had a flavor that stood on their own. They did not. Beef Links - these surprisingly had really good flavor and a perfect amount of spice to them. But again I'm not sure if this was day old product because it had the look and color of something that has sat overnight and was reheated. Mac and Cheese - the mac and cheese had a great crust on top and again pretty decent flavor. But I could not get past how over salted it was. I think this is just a seasoning issue and on a different day it might be great. Potato salad (side) - the potato salad had more of a consistency of lumpy mashed potato than actual potato salad. The flavor was average so not bad and not great. Usually when I hit up a great barbecue joint besides are where it's at. Not so much here. Cole slaw (side) - I read some of the reviews of people disliking the coleslaw. I have to disagree. It had a pretty interesting flavor that I'm not used to for most coleslaw. I couldn't quite pinpoint it but in a meal that lacked seasoning and flavor, this side stood out. A couple of positive notes. The hot bbq sauce had good kick and actually tasted great. It made the brisket somewhat salvageable. Also you do get a lot of food for about $20 if quantity is your thing I really wanted to like this place a lot. A friend told me about it and said I would love it. I read the Yelp reviews and was excited to dig in. And when I arrived the owner couldn't have been more than gracious. Which is why I hate writing this review because he was a genuinely nice person and seemed very enthusiastic about his restaurant. And with all of the great reviews on Yelp I was excited to finally find some great barbecue in LA. I will always give room for the possibility that I showed up on and off day at any restaurant I go to. But the lack of freshness, flavor, seasoning, and tenderness in the meats is not something that should be hit or miss on any given day. Especially when I had three different types of meat. And I know when meat has been reheated using steam. The look, flavor, and texture give it away. Similar to when you're at a restaurant and you know that they microwaved your food. I'm not saying he did that here, I'm just saying you know when something has been reheated. I really do hope all the best for this place and maybe someone else will enjoy it more than I did. But I cannot recommend it or would I go back. read more

Not as good as I remember. Been coming here since they opened. Hadn't been for awhile. Smelled the bbq the other day and wanted to pick some up. Dude smoking right outside pickup window. No more inside seating. Charged $57 (whole chicken, 1/2 lb "brisket" and rib tips that weren't even bbq-Ed) and they didn't include any sides of the sides advertised with the order online. Wanted to try this place and finally got my chance yesterday via take-out. Brisket and Baby Back Ribs with a couple of sides including their amazing cornbread muffins. Here's my two cents: the sauce was in a separate container and had a little vinegar base - enough for all of the food we ordered. Oh man this place is awesome. After having a bad experience with BBQ at another place, I started going on a quest for finding good BBQ in LA. This was one of the places I tried to see how it compared and before the week was done, I'm back here again. Lol. I also found out that this was where my friend got BBQ for me years ago and I have always wondered where it was from. So yeah, three times I had this place and they've always been great. The meats are the highlight, as it should be. The beef brisket, pork ribs, tips, beef links, and beef ribs are the ones I tried and the ones that stood out to me a lot were the ribs and brisket. Can't wait to try the pulled pork soon. (and I most definitely will soon) Also, look how beautiful that brisket sandwich is. There's no cole slaw in there too like a lot of crappy LA BBQ places like to do. The sauces do come on the side for now, just so the containers don't get soggy. That is fine for me since I do that for sauces often anyways. Lol... but I hope they'll get to open their dine-in soon so I could enjoy these sandwiches properly slathered in sauce before serving. I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of them when they do. This establishment has been around since 1989. Their sides have that classic taste as well. The beans and the potato salad however does stand out though. Some classics are nice to have as they are. This place is by no means a hipster place. Right now you order through their window for take out. It's definitely a small business so things might not be as readily available like your chain restaurant. If you want to support small businesses, you're definitely at the right place though. The place looks pretty old and I bet you've driven past this establishment a few times driving up La Cienega without thinking about them, but you're definitely missing out if you don't give them a try. My Auntie and I have been passing by JR's Barbeque for the last 6 months and vowed to try it one day. Today, was the day and so glad we did! We were met by Robert, one of the owners, and Rosie. Literally, some of the nicest, down-to-earth people you'd ever want to meet! We ordered food to go and had good conversations about how JR's Barbeque was founded. JR's Barbeque took me back to my childhood growing up in Los Angeles - nostalgia Robert did say its better if you eat the food at the restaurant and enjoy it - next time for sure so I can relish the ambience.
