So these there my gizzards I paid almost $8 for...they taste nothing like gizzards...
    Alondra C.

Bought a almost $40 order just so all the food could look and taste how it looks..the gizzards had absolutely no crunch, but that may be because the batter wasn't stuck on them. They were also very chewy and salty.

I'm surprised I'm the first one to review this little gem. I travel for work, so whenever I land in a new spot, my M.O. Is to hit up the apps which tell me where's good to eat. I found a few positive comments about this place being a good lunch joint on another site, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Jr.'s is a little hole in the wall, by the railroad tracks (no, really!). Blink and you'll miss it. The outside looks a little run down, but the full parking lot at noon (and streetside filling up) told me to press on. Open the door and you can see the place is a haunt for regulars; a small bartop counter to your left and alternating booths and tables to the right. This out-of-towner was invited to grab a seat anywhere and a friendly waitress took my drink order. There's a small board with "specials" on the wall, but after watching a few happily-munching folks, I could tell ordering anything but the "buffet" would be the fodder of a new-comer. The sign on the wall advertised a lunch buffet from 11-2, a dinner buffet on Wed and Fri from 4-8 and separate Saturday and Sunday buffets. The cost for each was between $7-9, which is cheaper than some TV dinners! I visited during lunch, so the rest of this review reflects the time. The buffet could possibly change during dinner/weekend meals, so keep this in mind. Toward the back of the place, (just ahead of a dividing wall, carving out a busy to-go order station) are two buffet tables. To the right, is a well-stocked (but under-visited) salad bar and soup station (Chicken and Beef Barley). To the left (swarming with people) is a station with a handful of offerings. Fried Chicken Pieces, American Chop Suey (or goulash as known in some parts), pulled pork, mashed potatoes, green beans and chicken gravy. Wanting to be well-rounded, for this review, I grabbed some of each! The main event- the chicken: crispy, well-seasoned crust was yummy, but for me it's also about the meat... And Jr.(assuming it's his recipe) did not disappoint. It was juicy and flavorful, and definitely worth naming the place after! The sides: Mashed potatoes/gravy- good, creamy and just the right hint of seasoning. Chop Suey- elbow macaroni, tomato and meat sauce and red kidney beans (a first for me) mixed all together, it was very tasty. Green beans- canned, cut green beans. Nothing special, but a good staple from my childhood. Pulled pork- an unexpected bonus. I'm a BBQ aficionado, and this was some of the best I've tasted in some time! A little char with a SLIGHTLY sweet tomato and onion based sauce. Awesome! After I returned to my seat, the waitress checked in to make sure I was good and I enjoyed my meal, returning for another chicken drumstick and scoop of pork. The waitress returned again to refill my drink and remind me that the salad bar had some cold desserts (puddings) and that there was also pie as an option. (I didn't ask, but I assume it was an additional cost.) After gorging on the buffet I was in no shape to eat dessert! I waddled out, pleasantly fed for under 11 bucks including tip. If you're on the fence, give this place a try. I will be back here at least once before I return back home to the Northeast!

Glad I don't live in this town. This chicken is so good that it could lead to "Chicken Addiction" lol

Best fried chicken in the area, but I'll never understand why people like their macaroni salad so much. It has a really bitter aftertaste.

A couple kinds of French toast. Scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, country fried steak, bacon, ham, corned beef hash, lots of potato casseroles, waffles, two kids of French toast...it just goes on and on. And then you have a full salad area with fresh fruit !! Oh and did I mention an entire buffet of pastries? Donuts, cinnamon rolls, danishes, muffins. It just kept going !!! Everything was fresh and replenished and delicious. The only thing I'd pass on was the Bloody Mary bar. Not a lot of stuffs. Cold chicken nuggets, bacon, green olives, some sad pickle spears, lemon wedges, celery, kielbasa, that was pretty much it. Would Have like to have seen cheese cubes or maybe some shrimp. But it was not bad, just nothing to write home about. All in all for 20.00 a person for food (I don't remember what the bloody bar was) it was a good deal. And they do it daily, not just on the weekends!!!

As for the food, the Pepperoni Pizza was excellent and the salad bar was a nice addition. Unfortunately, the Buffalo Chicken Wing Pizza was quite dry, which was a letdown for others in our party. The pizza we ordered was thin crust and it came to the table greasy as all grease. It didn't smell like pizza nor taste like it either. The manager said it looked as usual to him, said the cheese was making the pizza greasy, what? The salad bar was still good so that is all we ended up eating and leaving. Was comped the pizza and asked if we wanted to take it home- not sure why we would want to take it home to only toss in the trash. Never seen this manager before, again the ingredients changed on this place, I'm sure due to the cost of everything today they may be seeking lesser valued items and it sure tastes like it. We'll be looking for another pizza place to visit out of this town because there are no other good pizza joints.

My review is more like 3 1/2 stars but closer to 4 than 3 on our visit this past Monday. The chief…read morenegatives to me were (1) that a few of the food trays were more warm than hot when food was transfered to the plate (2) seeing some unhappy employee faces and (3) the ice cream machine was not in service. However, drink refills were fairly timely and most of the food was very good, though my lady said the mac and cheese was subpar. The baked fish was rather dry. The cheesy broccoli soup was decent, though all the broccoli in the soup were "crumbs". Some of the truly excellent offerings were the fried shrimp, bourbon chicken, beef stew and what looked like burnt pork, though I had to scrape out what little remained. The riblets were fine and tender but missing BBQ sauce. Salad bar was good and plenteous. Loved the ICEE machine, mixing the cherry flavor with cherry limeade. The blueberry pie was OK but what really off the charts was their strawberry/cherry (was not identified which) cake. It was not something I would expect a buffet to serve. The presentation was so-so but the taste was gangster, something you might find in an upscale eatery. Highlight dessert. Upon check in to pay, the cashier told our party of 3 that they were out of several items and for that reason took 10% off the bill, a very nice gesture which kicked my 3 star rating to 4. Three of the items said to be unavailable were the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and meatloaf. However, the mac and cheese was available about halfway thru dinner as were the mashed potatoes. The potatoes were fine but as noted in the first paragraph, not so much the mac and cheese. The $16 charge for me and my lady (we're "young seniors") was fair. There's obvious need for improvement at this location but the one star review from last month is baffling. Although I had none of the fried chicken, it looked fine to me and my lady said it was good so I am a bit skeptical of Chris's lengthy negative review, though I concede it's possible. It was a bit of a drive to come here from Michigan City where my family is but the sizable amount of food available was still a blessing, despite a few lackluster offerings. I may return but I may also consider the Merrillville or Mishawaka locations for a classier experience. Still overall not bad here but admittedly it does need some oomph.
