My review is more like 3 1/2 stars but closer to 4 than 3 on our visit this past Monday. The chief negatives to me were (1) that a few of the food trays were more warm than hot when food was transfered to the plate (2) seeing some unhappy employee faces and (3) the ice cream machine was not in service. However, drink refills were fairly timely and most of the food was very good, though my lady said the mac and cheese was subpar. The baked fish was rather dry. The cheesy broccoli soup was decent, though all the broccoli in the soup were "crumbs". Some of the truly excellent offerings were the fried shrimp, bourbon chicken, beef stew and what looked like burnt pork, though I had to scrape out what little remained. The riblets were fine and tender but missing BBQ sauce. Salad bar was good and plenteous. Loved the ICEE machine, mixing the cherry flavor with cherry limeade. The blueberry pie was OK but what really off the charts was their strawberry/cherry (was not identified which) cake. It was not something I would expect a buffet to serve. The presentation was so-so but the taste was gangster, something you might find in an upscale eatery. Highlight dessert. Upon check in to pay, the cashier told our party of 3 that they were out of several items and for that reason took 10% off the bill, a very nice gesture which kicked my 3 star rating to 4. Three of the items said to be unavailable were the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and meatloaf. However, the mac and cheese was available about halfway thru dinner as were the mashed potatoes. The potatoes were fine but as noted in the first paragraph, not so much the mac and cheese. The $16 charge for me and my lady (we're "young seniors") was fair. There's obvious need for improvement at this location but the one star review from last month is baffling. Although I had none of the fried chicken, it looked fine to me and my lady said it was good so I am a bit skeptical of Chris's lengthy negative review, though I concede it's possible. It was a bit of a drive to come here from Michigan City where my family is but the sizable amount of food available was still a blessing, despite a few lackluster offerings. I may return but I may also consider the Merrillville or Mishawaka locations for a classier experience. Still overall not bad here but admittedly it does need some oomph. read more

Hardly any customers for Friday night . I can see why as we had already paid. The food was terrible ,most was cold. They only had one server on one side and the plates were dirty and stacked up on the table behind us. She was doing all she could do. The bathrooms were filthy. Terrible experience. Arrived before 4:00 for lunch prices and staff left the register for several minutes to seek assistance so we paid dinner prices. Not the end of the world BUT THEN many of the dinner food trays were empty (mashed potatoes, corn, onion rings, pizza) and remained empty for 10+ minutes. I asked for potatoes and was told it would be a few minutes. When they were finally squeezed out of a plastic bag THEY WERE COLD! This place is dying. Was here for 39 minutes and still didn't get my drinks or utensils AFTER asking many times finally got my drinks still no utensils have to walk to the front desk to get it myself. Do not patronize this location. I filed two complaints on this location and haven't heard back from the owner nor the management team. Almost a week ago I went to this location and saw that the place was almost empty due to the cold temperatures outside. I paid for my food and they had the buffet stocked well. When I filled my plate I noticed because there wasn't many customers in there that the food had been sitting there for a while and most wasn't fresh. When I sat down to eat I notice that the skin on the chicken wasn't crispy at all and room temperature. I took the skin off the thigh and bit into it. As I put the chicken back down I saw blood flowing out of the chicken: down my chin and in my mouth. The chicken wasn't cooked all the way through. How in the world would they let undercooked chicken make it to the buffet for consumption? I sat my plate down, took pictures and informed the cashier as I couldn't tell you who the manager was. I left there and contacted the corporate complaint line via email and sent them a picture of the bloody chicken that was served to patrons. You would think that they would contact me immediately but to this day I haven't heard from the owner nor the manager from this location. I contacted the Health Department who responded the very next day once they saw the picture of the bloody chicken on my plate. The chicken was supposed to be cooked for a certain length of time and then checked with a thermometer before being put on the buffet. This clearly wasn't done. I made a complaint with the BBB and sent them pictures. This location finally responded to the BBB complaint saying that they saw that I contacted them and the complaint was forwarded to the owner and staff who would be contacting me. I never heard from the owner nor the manager. Eating undercooked chicken can lead to serious health issues especially for those with compromised immune systems and children. I have seen chicken go straight from the basket to the buffet as a line form waiting on it and not one time did a thermometer touch a piece of chicken. If you care about the health and safety of your family, don't bring them to this location as the owner and manager hasn't addressed my concerns even after seeing the bloody chicken I left on the table. read more

Because we frequent various GC locations for breakfast, we decided to go for dinner. The greeter(We'll call Ms. P) was extremely rude and unprofessional from the moment we walked through the door. First, we were one of only 4 customers (1 single/2 couples) to be seated. When we walked in she walked away. no explanation of any kind and stayed gone for 6 minutes. When she returned no apology nor explanation she waited on Customer 1 then walked away again leaving Customer 2 and us once again waiting FOR 7 MORE MINUTES. When she returned she offered no explanation nor apology and clearly had an attitude. When asked what was wrong she YELLED WHY? Needless to say we asked for Corporates information to report her behavior and she started fuming and called the police! The officer was nice and understanding and pretty much agreed that she'd gotten upset because we wanted to report her to GC Corporate office. Let me restate that we've been here as well as other GC's before for breakfast and the staff was really nice but this employee is the Epitome of What drives customers away! Shame on GC for allowing such behavior, she is a lawsuit waiting to happen! read more

I am definitely not a fast-food nor big chain restaurant lover. Just not my thing. Traveling with someone who does like those, I got "persuaded" to try Golden Corral in Schererville where we were staying for a few days. I know a few Golden Corrals and wasn't looking forward to dinner that much, but I wanted to give it a try. Apparently the old restaurant closed down and this newer one opened in February 2019. It looks clean and pretty new, we were being welcomed by a friendly staff member. I do have to point out that I'm not a buffet lover; the thought of too many people touching the same spoon to dish up isn't appetizing to me. Their salad bar isn't too bad. I was happy to see there was more than the infamous iceberg lettuce: a bowl of spring mix made me sigh with relief. A selection of the same old dressings and toppings we all know too well. It wasn't the worst and not the best salad bar. Having said: we're only paying $12 so let's look on the bright side. Their carving station offered many options. My dinner companion and big Golden Corral fan had fried chicken, turkey in a good gravy with mashed potatoes) a selection of salads (I believe tuna and sea food). Their Brussels sprouts swim in bacon butter sauce; too much for me. Their creamy spinach was anything but creamy, it was too watery. That needs definitely work. Spare ribs were really tasty. The desert area is messy. Parents should accompany their kids and not let them run wild on a high sugar intake to just massacre cookies and stick fingers in the chocolate fountain. Pretty disgusting if you ask me. I tried their red velvet cupcake which was underwhelming. The carrot cake was dry: had much much better and slightly worse. Evaluation? It's a cheap place to eat. Parents with kids do like this place hence the fact we saw many kids run around. Will I be back? I don't think so, it's not a place I would recommend to people without kids. This is our first visit since they reopened. I have to say the food was excellent and more importantly it was super clean (with workers constant sweeping the floor and cleaning the spilled food up from the serving areas. Also, the hot foods were piping hot and the salads were nice and cold. Perfect! The hope is the management keeps it up. If they do, we will continue to patronize this location and I'm sure others will jump on board too. Management: keep up the good work! read more

My previous experience here was a chaotic from terrible service, to dirty restrooms and hardly anything edible. So I'm giving this place a 5 stars simply to help offset some of the negative reviews. My wife and I travel quite a bit and have been to other golden corrals the one in Lafayette Indiana, really exceeded my expectations. The quality of food here from my last experience at this location is much better, some dishes were a bit over salted and they seemed to have a difficult time supplying fresh silver ware in time. We are here during dinner, the restaurant is not packed but to get the "dinner item" -steak there is constantly a wait. Hence my tip (come during lunch) 14.95? + drink prices for dinner... Still of you eat alot and know what to pick out you can snag a value. A buffet is what you would imagine it to be, nothing to knock your socks off but this place is definitely good enough to "gorge" if that's your thing. read more

It's a buffet. I know that's an obvious statement. You're not going to get great food except for me one or two things. But it's good all things considered. There's a large variety the staff is friendly they try to keep it clean but the table turnover can be high and staffing is on the shorter side. But they are very attentive with refilling drinks and trying to take your dirty dishes. Like I said it's a Buffay. It satisfies your craving to eat all you can the salad bars good and the dessert bars really good kids love the place. If you don't set your expectations super high it'll be a good experience. I've been to the G.C. in Grand Junction, CO. What a great place to eat. Foolishly, I thought all G.C. were like this. The G.C. in Schererville is a huge disappointment. The buffet selection IS smaller than I expected. The food looks pretty sad.... Not much in the salad department. Also, if you like fruit, you'll only have sliced peaches (not fresh, it's the canned type in the slimy juice), watermelon and dried out orange slices. The fish looked pretty pathetic (I was afraid to touch it). In many places, there was food on the floor, that remained on the floor (wait staff would walk right by it). There was also a woman (customer) there who had a deep, hoarse cough (she sounded like she had one foot in the grave). A person like that should not even be allowed to dine in public. Wow.....just wow. If the company mission of Golden Corral is to make its customers feel like they are actually in a corral waiting to be fed, then mission accomplished with this location. Hopefully, they aren't all like this. Lines of hungry crowded people herding together waiting for a table. Then once you get a table, its back to lines of hungry CRAZY people waiting to get food. Someone dropped a hunk of taco meat on the floor, and it stayed there for a good 10 minutes while people stepped over it, including some staff. The food stations took forever to be refilled, a few of them didn't get refilled the entire time we were there. Golden corral has become a gross filth hole. Family went there for "breakfast for dinner". Bacon was chunks of deep fried rocks, prescrambeled eggs were inedible, and the omelets were cooked with one part oil, 4 part egg "mixture". Came out to be an oily mess. The waffles were the only edible thing (if one can find someone to cook them as all the workers avoid interacting with customers). Good luck if you have to use the bathroom, or take a toddler in them...ill let you enjoy that level of terror on your own I wish people would stop going here to force the owners to fix the facility or just close and let a new business try to do better. read more

I had to escape Illinois and cross the border into Indiana for some work the other night. So I thought I would try out Golden Corral after seeing all those TV commercials about the place. Entering the building I to hold back from tossing my cookies due to the smell of the joint, if I was not running late and hungry I would have. If you ever been to a Country Buffet, you know the smell. I do not know what it is but they all smell the same. Also, people when you get in line to pay for your meal, have your money ready, it is like Let's Make a Deal here. People digging for cash or credits cards, asking repeatedly how much, and just general nonsense. They do have a wide selection of items to eat, but still nothing looked like it was going to knock my socks off. The only good thing that I seen was pot roast, I can eat plates of this stuff. Tried the ribs, brisket, chicken, all of it was either luke warm or cold, so no seconds on that stuff. All of the other items were just the usual buffet junk. The only thing that makes this place any good is the wait staff. They have about a dozen people buzzing around cleaning plates and refilling drinks. My server would not let my drink get any where near the bottom of the glass. At one point I had to tell, no more, I have a long drive in front of me and did not want to make a lot of washroom stops. Also the manager (I assume) was on the floor and noticeable throughout my meal. Most of the time you can't the wait staff and never the person in charge. Getting to the restaurant is a bit tricky, it is tucked away behind the Home Depot Store. There was a lot of kids running around the place so the noise level is very load here, so a quiet dinner is out. But then again, going to a buffet is always a gamble. read more

This isn't a Golden Corral location I've ever been to, I'm more just speaking of going to Golden Corrals in different parts of the country throughout much of my life(and most recently, going to one in the Huntington/Barboursville(WV) area, late last year). Golden Corral blows Old Country Buffet/OCB away by such a great margin, that it isn't even funny(if anything, it's sad how crappy OCB is, in comparison, looking back at all the times in my life I've been dragged there by family members against my will, as Golden Corral has pretty much no locations in Chicagoland, except in far-out suburbs that are a long drive away). That factoid aside, the variety of food is so much better than what you can find at OCB, plus the dessert bar they always have is amazingly good. I'm always surprised every time I've been to a Golden Corral that I give in to my dark, gluttony(sp?) desire to try most things on their dessert menu. Ironically though, I don't think I've tried their ice cream more than once or twice in my life, but then again, why bother? Especially since the cakes/pies they have are THAT great, and rich to eat. Plus, the seafood offerings you can find here are so damn good, especially the catfish. Just wish there was a way I could magically transform all the crappy OCBs on earth into Golden Corrals, even if that means a few of them did slightly become more ghettoey. And that's how much I HATE going to OCB. read more

Selection wise, def the best around the area. Steak, salad bar, dessert bar are always on point. However, they have become like the Walmart of food buffets and made it difficult to choose this place to eat most of the time. The area where the food is is generally kept pretty clean. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though, because my trips with the family are often during dinner (high traffic) and the area suffers some bc of the sheer volume of people coming and going is quite a bit. The dining area are dingy at times, bathrooms disgusting. I'm scared to find out how much dirt is in there if they get inspected. Buyer beware! read more
