When we are seated, they usually have a cart of dim sum ready for us to select from. My favorites are the baby squid and crispy taro dumplings (I think that's what you call it). The chicken feet here is just okay though. They have soup dumplings here and it's pretty good. We've tried JS Chen DIm Sum a number of times. Gone in the middle of a Sunday and it was great. The last few times though it's been quite a disappointment. We would order dim sum a la carte and the dumplings weren't bad but sometimes very over steamed. What was difficult was that it would take upwards of 20+ mins to receive the full order. Which doesn't bode well if you get full by the time the last order comes out. In almost all of the instances they forgot certain parts of the order. We made the best of it by just saying we were full so it's fine. In the end we would rather hit Kirin Court as long as they don't have a private event taking place. read more

We ordered several dishes and one came out cold! When i told the manager they were cold she got defensive and said they are suppose to be cold. The menu item was "steamed vegetables", last time i checked steamed meant hot. The chicken feet were so heavy breaded and soaked in sauce you couldn't eat it them. The garlic ginger scallops were ok. I had a tiny amount to eat which was very noticeable when i asked for the check not the server or the manager asked if everything was ok, offer to take the cold vegetables off the check but instead asked if i wanted to take that nasty food home! I think JS Chen has some respectable dim sum, especially for the Dallas area. They use carts which is the traditional method of serving dim sum. Service was quick, they speak cantonese, mandarin and english so it was easy to converse and pick item. We had all the regular items like har gaw, congee, egg tarts, shrimp in flat noodles, spare ribs, fong jow, bbq pork buns. I found lunch to be quick and satisfying. Ok... so this place doesn't have the best customer service or manners, but food is always fresh and great! We've tried a variety of dishes here and I can't remember one that wasn't good or bland. Came in for a table of 3 was given only 2 menus. Was rushed to order drinks and food by the server hovering over the table. Was never checked on, staffed stared at us THE WHOLE TIME. It felt incredibly uncomfortable and rushed to leave. At the end of our meal the server had the audacity to demand a tip. She then questioned me why I didn't put a tip on the ticket, after being told why she went off talking and pointing at us to the other staff. One of the more disappointing Chinese restaurants I've been to. For one, tea should be free, out of the many places I've been to, this was the first that ever charged for tea and they charge per person. Something like $2 per person but you always get one pot no matter if you say 1 or 5 people. At least the tea was hot. The Dim Sum was good and better than I expected it to be especially in Texas coming from Hawaii. The things that were disappointing were the portion sizes and taste of their Honey Shrimp and Walnut and their broths were flavorless. But they need to work on customer service. Ever since we got seated, never had someone come by to check on water refills or if we're okay. The food here was alright, and the location was beautiful. I was super excited to come here and I was really looking forwards to come here and eat dinner with friends. We were seated very quickly, however the service left quite a lot to be desired. The server took forever to take our order, and told us that we could purchase one pot of tea with nine cups, but we were charged for 9 cups of tea (I wasn't upset abt the tea as much as I was that I was told one thing and charged for something else). Same with rice, they refilled our white rice but charged us, while the server said it was free. A staff changed the tea from nine to two, but didn't take off the tea. However I was most disappointed with the time that it took for the service. As a waiter myself, this service would be completely unacceptable and I personally would not want to come back again. Second time here. The restaurant is situated near my house and easy access to mall. They were very friendly and attentive services. Also the prices are reasonable. I think the place is accessible and affordable. For the meals, honestly their dimsum are not what I have eaten usual. The wonton skins were too thick and were torn very easily. Some meat smells were a little strong. But good thing was the spicy sauce, which was placed on the table killed the smell. Overall the place is not great but not bad. read more

Good thing the dim sum dishes are rolled out in carts so they are mostly available soon as the patrons are seated. Front door is super heavy; they even put up a sign to let people know, and yet never feel compelled to get it fixed. If you are low on blood sugar prior to eating at this place, you may need a full tug-o-war team to gain entry. read more

I like JS Chen's better than Kirin Court, just because the wait at Kirin is so long. We go to JS Chen's more often anyway since it's closer to us. Food-wise, I haven't noticed a substantial difference in quality. The ambiance at Kirin's I do prefer, especially if you get a table by the window. As usual, the service at JS Chen's isn't going to be amazing. But we got there at 10:30, earlier than we've ever gone, and carts were stopping regularly by our table. We even felt a bit rushed, and had to try and slow down the eating, haha. Still, a small nitpick, even though we took off the lid of our teapot, we still had to grab someone's attention to actually get a hot water refill. How long have they been serving buluo bao? I noticed it for the first time today, but maybe it's because I wasn't paying attention or they didn't have it available all the other times I've been. My favorite buluo bao in Dallas is still Sweet Hut's Hong Kong style one, but JS Chen's was good too. They put a sweet filling/cream inside, and I would rather it be butter instead. Still much better than the ones from the bakery inside Baijia (Jusgo) and the bakery inside Ranch 99. And Kirin's too, although I haven't had theirs in awhile. Their chicken feet are pretty good. Their xiao long bao isn't bad at all, it has a good amount of soup inside. Jeng Chi's is better though. Also, this time they really overcooked their Chinese broccoli. It was super soft. So, Megan and I had a hankering for a crepe and headed north for lunch. Well, come to find out you can't get a crepe at noon on a Tuesday so we wandered into another restaurant just next door, JS Chen Dim Sum & Barbeque. Megan has never had Dim Sum so this was a prime opportunity to get her little feet wet. The restaurant is really nice on the inside. The decor is really clean and modern but comfortable. We perused the menu and settled on the #13 lunch special - 2 shrimp dumplings, 2 pork dumplings, 1 steamed bbq bun, 1 dessert, steamed or fried rice & soup ($7.95). The only soup options we had were hot and sour (she got it) and egg drop (I got it). I like wonton soup much better, but hey. I'll take what I get. The soup was fine but not really memorable. Next we got our lunch dim sum combo plate. Truthfully, I've had better dumplings. They were tasty, they were good... but I've had better. I wouldn't go out of your way on a Tuesday lunch and go. Maybe they're better during cart service? I'll happily go on a Sunday and find out, but I would much rather try some of the really great looking chinese dishes I got glimpses of of coming out of the kitchen first. I can definitely see this place jumping to 4 star category after another visit (and trying more of the menu), but based on dim sum at this lunch, I'm going with 3. Don't worry JS Chen... After having been to 2/3 of those(State Bird Provisions is bloody hard to get into), I have to say: 'Hmm...' On one hand, I associate 'Dim Sum' with 'Binge', and JS Chen is far easier in my wallet than Koi or Yank Sing. (How does one refuse food when it rolls up to your table!) However, I don't think the menu options, quality & atmosphere really compare to San Francisco. They have high prices, but they really do bring the quality and great menu items. That is not to say it is bad. For the area(I've only tried Kirin & 99 ranch here), it is the best Dim Sum I've had. But I still don't know if it is one of the best in all of America. They serve the staples, plus more. Everything I tried was very well cooked, and flavorful. Not too sweet, not dry, good ratios of meats/sauces/starches. Really good quality stuff. Unfortunately, they don't do a great job explaining what everything is, and (like most places), not everything comes around, many items just have to be requested. ___________________________________ Conclusion: Ignoring the comparison to San Francisco Dim Sum, JS Chen is good stuff. This ain't SF, so it seems unfair to compare it to them for local Yelpers. If you are in North Dallas and want Dim Sum, JS Chen is a very solid choice. This is probably one of the better dim sum places in Dallas. Forget Kirin Court. JS Chen has pretty much the same selection, and it's cheaper. Cheaper means more casual service, of course, but they still are attentive and accommodating -- they even changed the TV channel for us when we asked to watch a football game. This is the closest dim sum place to me but it would be honestly more worth to drive 10 more minutes and go to another place. The food here isn't bad but if you wanted good quality dim sum, I'd try another restaurant. The prices here are not bad though. Some things were a little pricey like $10 wonton soup. And they only have one size of everything, so it is family style here. The pork bun is always disappointing. Dry and probably made earlier which caused it to dry and taste old. The siomai is okay and their wonton soup kind of tastes like the frozen wonton soup you can get at Costco. Service here is a little rough as well. If you go during lunch rush on weekends, the wait staff is generally in a panic, rushing through all the tables, slamming steamers on to your table and possibly even getting aggressive. We went here once during Sunday lunch rush and we were asking the lady bringing our food out questions and she was getting angry, yelling at us (even louder than normal bc it was pretty loud in the dining room already), and she just had a snappy tone that didn't sit well with us. She returned later and i guess realized she was coming off rude and reexplained her answers and apologized. Hello. I am not Asian. OK Point? I have not been to China or any other Asian destinations. My Mom didn't cook (thank G-d) or take me to Dim Sum on Saturday mornings during my youth. OK again, Point? My point is, I have no idea what truly authentic Dim Sum should taste like! The only thing I know is taste and what I like. So JS Chen gets a weekly visit from me. I have tried every single Dim Sum item on the menu, and on the Saturday and Sunday cart service. Sure there are some where texture or execution are an issue (the fun rolls are gooey and the soup dumplings are always stuck to the doily) but the flavors are always there for me. I never leave without having the Curry Cuttlefish. Deep Curry flavor with tender little guys that melt in your mouth. The spare ribs and the Chicken feet are winners too, but they both facilitate a lot of sucking and slurping. Don't be shy though, no one there cares! The hot and sour soup is the best I have had, anywhere! I love the weekly lunch specials, but often I will order off the menu and enjoy some dishes that are more authentic. I will point and grunt at the stuff in Chinese and ask my very helpful server will tell me what it is. I have never gotten something that didn't blow my mind with new flavor explosions that add to my life experience! I am a Duck whore and have tried it here, but unfortunately I still drive to First Chinese for my Duck fix. It's a flavor thing. (They do this on weekends from 11-3; dim sum items are available at all other times just "off the menu.") Finally - someone in DFW that does Dim Sum right. Since moving from Los Angeles in 2003, I've been searching for a dim sum restaurant that wasn't just average. The places in Richardson are ok - but they too often run out of everything good way too soon. JS Chen, however - the location in the Asia World Market shopping center on Legacy near 75 - is just what I've been looking for. The duck was tender, the sesame balls were perfect and they ran out of nothing while we were there during a very busy lunch service. The staff is knowledgeable about their product and are easy to understand. Best part is the dim-sum prices. No plate is over $5 and most are around $3-$3.50.
