Upon arriving at the place, there was a couple people seated and the place looked inviting, but I noticed a weird metallic type smell almost like a cleaning product or something that I couldn't quite pinpoint. I looked over the menu and talked to the two gentlemen behind the counter were extremely helpful and polite. I proceeded to order a pound of ribs, quarter pound of smoked turkey, quarter pound of smoked sausage. When I got home, I opened up the packages and found that the one had something it spilled out of one of their container containers and got all over the bag and all the brownie. The ribs looked appealing at first glance but were tough and dry. The smoked turkey was the best tasting of the meats but was also very dry. The smoked sausage was good as was the green chili mac & cheese. The potato salad was also really decent but the coleslaw was not edible and I can't even describe the flavor to you. Lastly, I had high hopes for the brownie, which was soft but again I took a bite and it had a weird metallic taste to it.. for fear that it might've just been me my lunch partner also tried it and couldn't swallow it as well nor describe it other than it tasted metallic. Initially I was going to rate this as a two star, but after reviewing my experience and the sick to me, stomach feeling that I now have I'm reducing it to a one star. Sadly this will be my first & last visit to this restaurant, as well as having buyers remorse.

Overall good experience, the place is super clean which is important. It made for a nice first impression. The food was good and the owner, Mr. Vargas asked us how our meal was and explained that the restaurant was ran by him and his daughter. We love supporting local, family owned businesses and it was nice to be able to that for our visit to J's Var B-Q. Give it a try!

I'm cheering for this place, but they could do somethings better. I wanted to try all the meats, but certain meats are only sold as a whole or half like the chicken. The brisket wasn't sold as slices so they overcook their brisket so it falls apart. The turkey appeared to be sliced with the grain. The rib tips they cut off. I don't see why they don't St. Louis rib cut the tips off to make rib tips to sell as a dish. The service was fast and friendly. The food was good, but I'm not making a trip just for this food. The green chile mac & cheese was good, but was not able to get as much green chile flavor as I had hoped for. It was good to see they rewrap their meat in foil after cutting to helps save the juices. Overall, OK BBQ joint.

***New Business"** SIDE NOTE: I'm from Texas, so Bar-B-Q is different J 's Var-B-Q is located in the Louisiana Plaza on Montgomery and Louisiana.  If you're driving too fast, you just might miss the eatery. Slow down and stop by. Business hours are 11a to 7p everyday. Met Julian Vargas., the owner and his wife, while I was enjoying a relaxed Sunday afternoon.  The wonderful staff greeted me with warmth and a smile.   (David L.) took my order. and Alex, the restaurant manager, also assisted with my order.  She and David were cordial and professional. Good food, nice folks, great atmosphere.  I ordered 1/2 brisket, ribs, beans and mac and cheese.  Alex provided me with a sampling of smoked chicken wings  Brisket: high quality, tender meat and mildly seasoned.  When you add the barbecue sauce, it adds more flavor  Ribs: smoky, tender and fell off the bone Smoked chicken wings:  definitely smoky, a little spicy and a little sweet.  Wings did not have a crispy, outer skin but weren't overdone either.   Beans tasted smoky but sweet, syrupy-like, but in a good way.  Could be because I hadn't had sugar in a while.  They were yummy! The mac and cheese was velvety, cheesy, thick and delicious. I did not sample the baked potatoes but did find out that those spuds are named after the owners' grandkids.  How cute!. Available dessert is a brownie.  I did not sample it because I'm not really a fan of chocolate desserts.  However, I will try it should I return to J's Var-B-Q. Give this new establishment a try.

This weeks date was J. I was not feeling well again due to my diseases so we had it delivered and we were not disappointed. J Vars BBQ was amazing. We had the brisket and the turkey. The sides were the okra, potatoe salad, and Mac and cheese. We got the cobbler for dessert. It was all seasoned well, the meats tender and had a delicious smoked flavor. The sides were amazing. The Mac and cheese was super creamy. The cobbler had just the right sweetness and the crust was crispy. The whole meal was amazing, next time we will visit in person.

    The Kai Kai Brisket

Had the Kai Kai with brisket -- it's basically a mac and cheese brisket sandwich -- and it was really good. The meat was tender, the mac was creamy, and everything had great flavor. The service was fast and the food came out hot. I'll definitely come back.

Oh goodness gracias that was delicious! We tried the 'Ma family pack' to get lots of sampling options. It's Oklahoma style bbq for starters and I am in love with the Mac and cheese (green chile option was phenomenal- I did NOT share). The potato bun is soft and tasty. Then the meats. The sausage is flavorful all on its own. And then we also tried the brisket and the pulled pork. This place doesn't even need tons of spices- they've perfected the smoking process to bring out the meat's natural amazing flavor. And it's still moist! I'm a die-hard for spicy sauces and their Hot bbq sauce (with red chili) is wonderful. Service was great! Ended up meeting the owner who explained the names of the food meals were named after his grandkids (adorable). The place is nice and clean and bright inside! Bathrooms are obviously clean! And for those other chocoholics like me- the brownie is to die for and made fresh daily. Run, don't walk~

Not bad but I would certainly not come back for it. French fries were freshly cooked and crispy... Yum. Service... One woman working in the front... Justin from another job with the other jobs T-shirt on... Didn't seem to know much about what was going on. Another woman who was serving food that where the orders were took seem to know the score there in terms of the menu. But she wasn't family. She didn't ask if I needed anything else when she brought my food and never came back. I got a sandwich with yellow mustard on which I absolutely do not like ever, but ate it given the circumstances and wasn't feeling like I wanted to wait for them to redo it and the environment with the lack of service. I must say too like so many places you pay they turn around for you to sign and then it asked for a tip and I absolutely refuse to tip before I get service. Or if the service is just taking an order or buying something. It's crazy. Anyway, between the food and the service, I would definitely not come back to the café. If I live closer, I'd probably come check out the bakery. That was pretty busy while I was sitting there.

I've been going there ever since. A few years ago, they added a bakery. It is chock full of delicious cookies, eclairs, cannolis, and you can even get a wedding cake there. Most recently, I went with some coworkers for lunch and ordered the Bella Mozzarella sandwich. Beautiful, thick slices of fresh mozzarella, loaded with tomatoes and basil. The bread was super fresh, and the potato salad was very flavorful. My coworker got an eclair on our way out. I just had a bite and it was divine. The older gentleman behind the counter was courteous and friendly. The atmosphere is laid-back, and the side wall is covered in shelves that contain imported pasta and various other products from Italy. There's a freezer case filled with premade meals and meat. If you haven't been there, it's definitely worth a stop

I've been going here for almost 40 years - not sure what it's going to take to get it through my…read morehead that Tully's just isn't to my taste. Over the years I keep going back, about once a year: I've had their sandwiches, their pastries, their pies . . . all kinda "meh" and all priced pretty reasonably but not inexpensively. Sandwiches give you a lot of everything . . . except flavor. Pastries are . . . fine. Pies are . . . fine, and kinda small (and not inexpensive, maybe reaching towards pricey); it's the kinda thing you are willing to pay for in order to bring it to a gathering, only to find almost no one bothers to eat it. And so you don't bother. The cookies are pretty good, actually. (And, yes, I know Italian delis - my Italian grandparents brought me to them in New York when I was a child. However, I'm not judging Tully's against these (as in "it's not as good as Back East"), I'm just saying it never really turns my crank.) Today I had a hot chicken, cheese, onion and pepper sandwich, the Carmela. It was a lot of food. But . . . not a lot of flavor. A whole lot of drippy mess in the bottom of my basket, though: water absolutely sopped through the (completely unmemorable tasting) bread loaf and pooled at the bottom of my basket as I ate in. The potato salad served alongside was fine - like what you'd get at Albertson's. The chicken was tender and . . . essentially without flavor, not even salt. There had clearly been a little marinade (I could sense some oregano and maybe garlic in there) but man could this thing have used about five times as much seasoning and then a healthy dose of a vinegar/garlic/oregano dressing on top of it. Bland. Lots of food in that $17 (almost $25 with tip) sandwich, but not a lot of enjoyment. I've had other Tully's sandwiches (both for here and to-go) that were better, but I can't really recall any of them . . . and I _never_ rush back. Like I said, this is a place I think about ("Hey, I'm right nearby; I should try Tully's again!") about once a year . . . and then, meh. To be fair - I believe that I am pretty out in left field on this take: Tully's is popular and always hopping. Get here early unless you want to stand in line. I only had to wait about three minutes to order, but by the time I left at noon this Friday there was a line to order all the way from the counter to the door. In terms of the room, it's a deli. Reasonably well set out with a decent amount of seating set out well, as well as some outside seating that you might want to try when it's not in the nineties. You order at the counter, pay, go get your own fountain drink (they also have some beer and wine, which they will serve you), find a seat and they'll bring it to you. When you're done, you bus it yourself. Pleasant staff - I don't regret tipping, although they don't do much. (As others have mentioned, if you get a cup of water, Tully's generously gives you a decent sized Solo cup - another plus.) It's fine. If you go, at least get yourself some cookies - they're pretty good.
