We decided to try this place today after I saw on social media that they had started carrying gluten-free bread. I was excited to give it a try since gluten-free options can sometimes be difficult to find in Albuquerque. When we arrived, they weren't too busy. I looked over the menu and narrowed my choices down to The Kind sandwich or the Not'Chos with chicken. I explained to the person taking our order that I have a gluten allergy and asked about the ingredients in both items, as well as what precautions they take when preparing gluten-free sandwiches. Unfortunately, he really didn't have a clue. He had no idea about any thing I was asking. He did say everything is prepared in the same area and that the sandwiches all go into the same oven/toaster together. I was really disappointed to hear this. It's frustrating, simply offering gluten-free bread doesn't make an item safe for people who medically need to avoid gluten. The employee taking our order had no idea what cross-contamination precautions meant when I asked about them. After asking several questions, I decided that the Not'Chos seemed like my safest option. I was told they are placed in the oven on their own paper, so although I was still hesitant, I decided to give them a try. Unfortunately, I became sick shortly after eating them. My husband and daughter enjoyed their food, so I can't speak negatively about the food in general. However, based on my experience, I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone with celiac disease, a gluten allergy, or anyone who needs to strictly avoid gluten. I really hope they consider providing better employee training and putting proper cross-contact precautions in place, since they are advertising gluten-free options. read more

It's been at least 12 years since I last went to Cheba Hut. I was in my early twenties a college kid who had a spunky vibe with a dash of adventure. I used to walk from UNM there all the time. I found myself curious if they still offered Koolaid it was one of the fond memories I had of this place being that it was one of the very few that offered it. I walked in and the first thing I saw was the variety of Koolaid. I felt relieved and excited. The staff was pretty chill. Being it had been so long since I last ate at a Chebahut I had to review the menu because I couldn't remember what I liked before. The menu had a very great variety. They had a little bit of everything for just about everyone. I settled with a Midwest Best. It's their own version of a club. I'm a sucker for a club sando. I paired it with a cup of their tasty tropical punch Koolaid and of course you know I had to have that chocolate rice Krispy treat. It set me back 20 bucks. It was a bit pricey. The sando came out fairly quickly. I didn't realize it came with tomatoes and onions. I admittedly took them out. I ate the pickles by themselves just because I'm weird. I don't like pickles in my sandwiches or burgers. I really like them by themselves. I took that first bite of the sando. It was marvelous. You could tell it was made with love. It truly was a site for sore eyes. I savored every bite. At 20 bucks for everything it stung at first but I'm one of those people who believes in quality over quantity. This was a quality sando. I was probably seated for 10 minutes before another diner came and sat down, yet the bartender greeted and served them first before even acknowledging me. Instantly annoyed, but I let it go. I ordered the G-13 on garlic & herb bread, with all the fixings, plus honey mustard and banana peppers. Very good, Cheba's! Only thing--I wish it had more meat, but still solid. Loved the sliced pickles--gave it great texture. Paired my sandwich with nacho cheese Doritos and a Tito's & cranberry. Now, what stole the show for me? KOOL-AID. Yes, they serve Kool-Aid! And not just any flavor--Tropical Fruit Punch, one of my all-time favorites. Talk about nostalgic! Now for the downside... When I was ready to pay, another bartender took my payment and swiped my card twice. I immediately noticed two different charges pop up and asked why she would do that knowing she had already successfully processed my payment. Like, pay attention, toots! I could be wrong, but I think this was my first time trying Cheba Hut after seeing so many videos about this place online, and hearing good things from several people. If I went before, it was a very long time ago. All of the subs on the menu online looked really good, and I couldn't decide, so I went with 2 different 4" subs. I got the La Canna, which is one of their Italian subs, and I got the KGB which is Roast Beef and Horseradish. Both of them were really delicious. It wasn't what I expected when I arrived to pick up my order. There was a bar inside and it just seemed like a fun, chill spot to hang out. The subs are toasted here and the bread is really good, making for a good, nice crunch. The sauces on each sub were really good and the amount of toppings were balanced well. Wife and I came here while visiting and I must say these subs exceeded our expectations, delicious, on point and filling. You order at the counter and try to find a seat, it's busy. Has a bar seating with full service drinks, outdoor patio to enjoy conversations and drinks while you wait for food, hip spot. There are several places around town that make a great sub. Someone asked me if I ever tried Cheba Hut. I hadn't so I needed to change that. WOW! What a great sandwich. I got the "Pinner" sized "La Cana", on garlic herb bread. 8" of deliciousness danced around in my mouth. The Shake & House dressing really make it pop. I'll definitely be returning for some of the other sandwich offerings. I have my eye on the "Kali Mist" for next time. That will be very soon. Woo! Cheba Hut is making their way across town with this new Uptown location. Right next to Fork & Fig, you can get your munchie fix. I ordered a 12" White Widow with a Kool-aid and a peanut butter rice krispy ball. The sandwich obviously was enough for a few meals and was really good, probably better than the last time I grabbed Cheba Hut by UNM. If you don't know, Cheba Hut has its own vibe. I think it is funny to read through the menu but also the sandwiches are just good especially compared to some of the other sub chains around. I enjoyed the Watermelon Kool-aid while I waited, which honestly I was surprised they told me the wait would be 15-20 minutes because I went in off-hours during the middle of the week. I love me some Cheba Hut!! Especially the new one in Uptown Albuquerque. Really excellent location Louisiana and Menaul. Exceptional sandwiches, they make their own bread in house, and the toppings on the sandwiches are unique and tasty. The variety is amazing. Whenever, we have trouble choosing a spot for lunch or dinner, we usually end up say CHEBA!!!! In the warmer weather, the patio is very appeasing! For example, the sizes of the sandwiches are: the 4" nug (small); the pinner 8" (medium); and the 12" blunt (large/footlong). I ordered the White Widow sandwich, which is a chicken-bacon-ranch (grilled chicken breast, bacon, ranch, shrooms, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, Shake & House dressing). I added extra sauce and house dressing. While I needed a lot of napkins (my own decisions led to that!), it was appetizing. Subway this is not! The chicken was moist, the sauces not too thick, and the sandwich toasted well. From ordering it took about 10 minutes until we got our sandwiches, which isn't bad at all for the quality. The business is in a nice little area with a couple of other food places and a big outside and inside eating available. The Sandia was with turkey and Jalepeno cream cheese and was nice and wet so lots of napkins but it was a great explosion of flavors. The bomb was decent just not enough red sauce on it.
