We stopped in for lunch with a friend. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon and there were a couple people at the bar watching the Yankee game. When our waitress came over we let her know that my husband has celiac and I have a grain intolerance. We asked if the bone-in wings were breaded and we were told they weren't and we ordered them. Our friend ordered the fish and chips. When the food came we could tell our wings were coated and made our waitress aware. She took a new order from us (taco salads, no shell). We were hungry by the time it came out and I forgot to snap a picture of it. I am a member of a group in "Meetup" for game enthusiasts. Juan Murphy's is one of a few locations where the group meets at regularly. Juan Murphy's is a perfect location for us to meet. The usual bartender is lovely and there are two spacious rooms--one is where you enter from the front door with a good sized bar as well as a good number of tables and the second one is where we meet and have a plenty of tables and seating for our various games. Lets be serious for just a moment here. When you read the name of this resturant you think its a typo, when you think about a Mexican/Irish fusion this sounds like something out of a cheesy rom-com film where a bad date is destined to happen. But with all that said this is NOT that! This place is truly a GEM with GREAT food, a fun ambiance and food fare not typical of what we consider Pub food. The meal began with complimentary chips and salsa which were promptly devoured. The appetizer chosen was the "Knockaverry Fries" crispy seasoned fries covered in melted cheese, crumbled chorizo and ranch dressing. My only request was more ranch because the fries were SO GOOD! Hot and crispy, lots of toppings. The meals chosen were the Special of the Day "Surf and turf", Sea food chowder and Chicken Quesadilla. The chowder was delicious! Not the kind of fare I would find at a pub but was I sure glad as it was cold outside and that chowder warmed my soul. The Carne Asada was SHOCKINGLY good, like it had no business being that good in a Mexican/Irish fusion but it worked. Full of flavor and not all tough and stringy, the shrimp were clean, hot and so buttery good! The refried beans were actual mashed beans not out of the can, guac and rice were on point. The quesadilla was STUFFED with chicken and cheese, crispy really just what was needed. As the meal came to a close I had half of everything still on the plate as I could not finish it all but was so glad i took a chance on this place. Came here for a birthday party where we had the entire front of the house to ourselves. The service of this place is absolutely incredible... We were checked in on constantly and provided such a personal type of service. There was a fixed menu so I got to try a bunch of the different menu items and I have no complaints about any of them. Everything that I tried was super delicious and it's some thing I would order over and over again. The drinks were also delicious. They were also super flexible about us hanging of decorations and setting the place up however we envisioned which is super awesome and gives anyone peace of mind when hosting an event. Came here with a group of friends for a birthday and got the same bartender as I had in the past. Boiler maker shots didn't come with the beers causing us to pound beers before the shots name which made our drinks taste weird. Before coming here, I had no idea that corned beef spring rolls (i.e., their reuben spring rolls) could be a thing. It's an interesting thing. Those, and the mix of Irish and Mexican offerings, a beer list that satisfied me, comfortable surroundings, and decent service, combined for one of those "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" experiences. The atmosphere here is laid back, and I think that's because it's far enough away - both in distance and ambiance - to not be a huge draw to the college crowd. For my beer for the evening, I sampled things new to me, first a Breckinridge Vanilla Porter, followed by local Peekskill Brewing Eastern Standard IPA, both I believe $6. We ordered a number of apps we shared, which included the reuben rolls and also the chili. I think if you want truth in advertising, it should be labeled as "chips with chili" because you certainly got more of the chips than the chili. The chili was meaty and smoky and somewhat heavy, covered with melted cheese, and definitely good for dipping into with the chips. My only complaint here is that I am still being reminded of the taste of the chili the next morning as I write my review. Service was fine. We were attended to often enough to check on our progress, and to take and serve orders. Monday night is darts night, though no one was using the dartboard. I understand they also have trivia and live music on other nights of the week. Those, plus some other menu items I'd like to try, will probably have me coming back. read more

Came here on a Friday night after work to get a couple of drinks with a co-worker. Neither of us had been here before so we thought we would give it a try. When the waitress took our drink order we proceed to ask her what drinks they have since they didn't have a drink menu and she stated "we have everything" in a bit of nasty tone. So we said we'll have some blue moons and they she replied well we don't have that. Then we asked her again what drinks they have and she said "they're all on the wall just take a look" again in a nasty and rushed tone. On one of the walls they had a list of everything they had on draft which would have been nice to know in the first place since we've never been there before. So I saw they had a local beer and I asked for that and then she proceeded to say "well we're out of the one" so then I settled for something I didn't really want. One the other hand the food was actually pretty good. Had the Guinness BBQ chicken wings which were very tasty and the chips and salsa that give to you we great. Bottom line: if you're looking for a Mexican restaurant, it's OK; if you're looking for an Irish pub, you'll be disappointed. I'll give the caveat up front that we'd been going to the Dubliner for many, many years. It was my favorite bar in the country. It broke my heart when the Dubliner closed last year. I was thrilled to hear it reopened, and was eager to try it out. Juan Murphy's is not the old Dubliner. Superficially, it resembles the Dubliner. But it's been cleaned up, sanitized, the lighting is too bright, the floors too light and shiny, and the old character is largely gone. The inviting, cozy seating nook up front is gone. The furniture and lighting now look like they're from a TGIF. No more soft, worn-leather dark wood low chairs. The Dubliner had a warm, inviting, well-worn ambience that made you want to linger for hours over fabulous beers. If you squinted (especially after a few beers), you could convince yourself you were really in Dublin. In the current incarnation of Juan Murphy's, no. Now it just feels like an Applebee's franchise. Most heart-breaking of all, the beer menu has been decimated. The Dubliner had one of the best draft beer lists in the world - yes, it was that good. Juan Murphy's beer selection is just meh. You'll probably find a beer or two to drink, but it won't make your jaw drop in awe and your mouth water with plans to come back again and again. It's now just a list of common mass-market beers with a few locals and never-heard-of-them oddballs thrown in. Years ago, the Dubliner's food was solid, very good quality pub food - it was worth going there for the food alone. In recent years, it went downhill. To this palate, it hasn't gotten any better, except now Mexican dishes have been added to the menu. The 'Street Corn' is genuinely delicious - truly char-grilled and with a cheese sauce. It's a must. The other Mexican dishes we've had were OK. Not bad, but not much different from what you can get in a couple of dozen other Mexican eateries in town. Nachos are fine, quesadillas are fine, tacos are pretty cheap. Nothing at all wrong with it, just unremarkable - the same stuff you can get all over town. I'll admit at being disappointed that the new Juan Murphy's is just not at all the same place as the Dubliner. I think it's having an identity crisis. Purely as a Mexican restaurant, I think it's 2 stars, with 4 star 'Street Corn'. Just like so many other places in town. Does Poughkeepsie really need yet another Mexican restaurant? As an Irish Pub, it's 0 stars - it's a Disney-esque caricature of the old Dubliner. As a Mexican-Irish mash-up, maybe it's a match that wasn't made in heaven? On a recent visit, we were the only customers there during our dinner - maybe some other people aren't feeling it either? If you go looking for decent Mexican food, you'll have a fine meal served with very friendly, warm service. Just don't go expecting an Irish pub to hang out in all night. Maybe Juan Murphy's needs to decide if it's going to be 'Juan' or 'Murphy', because to us, the strange hybrid isn't going to bring us back. read more

Costas tries really hard to have masked COVID requirements followed. They make a great shepards pie. And now a unbelieveable tomato soup.
