Having become more health conscious recently, I decided to check out some local juice places to improve my diet. Thus far Juice Appeal blows the other places out of the water - not a sugary chain store like Jamba and with better selection and quality than Planet Juice. I'm a big fan of their veggie juice blends, especially the "Harmony" blend. Smoothies are good and not sugary or icy, just fruity and filling. Plus, they have E3 Live which I haven't been able to find anywhere else. Stuff tastes way better than wheatgrass, though they have that too. All in all, highly recommended. 5 stars for selection, quality and biodegradable cups. read more

Great Smoothies! Horrible Customer Service!!! This place tried to charge me (50 cents) extra because I didn't want ice in a smoothie instead I wanted yogurt and agreed to pay extra. However when I questioned the manager she gave me some non-sense excuse why i would have to pay extra for something I did not want. The smoothies average $5 already. The manager finally agreed and said i should not be charged extra! The next time I went in she had a BAD attitude so I will no longer patronize this joint! Walked to this location on a Sunday morning and was met with a mind-numbing array of options on the board. I have issues with indecision, so I was more than pleased when the kind girl behind the counter suggested the Ginger Mint Lemonade. She also honored my request for low sugar content. I could really taste the freshness of the lemons! No concentrate here! The ginger gave it a fantastic kick. It is located right next to the Downtown Berkeley BART, so I highly recommend it as a quick stop location if you want to grab a juice on the go. I will come back and edit this rating once I have returned to Juice Appeal and tried their smoothies. Unfortunately, I believe that many of those are not made from fresh fruits. :/ read more

alright first off, lemmie tell you people out there that havent tried juice appeal, u need to get your act together cuz its waaaaaay better than any other smoothie place out there. Not only do they use the freshest fruits an veggies but they dont use any unnatural sugars that dont already come from the fruit, so its better for your health, unlike some competitors ahem.... jamba juice. The smoothie options are all fantastic here! It's pretty difficult to settle on just one to order. I ordered the creamy smoothie called peach kiss and it was tasty and refreshing. The only hard part for me was finding the store amongst the construction and not realizing it was cash only as well. I pass this place constantly. Never knew they had fresh juice. As soon as I found out, I was there like every day. Everyone was always friendly. I was using my frequent card and I was a happy camper. They have or had only one male that worked there. One day he took charged for my order and went to the fridge, like they always do to put my carrots or the vegetables I plan to juice. He did not use any tongs, but used his hands. No gloves or anything! I thought I would be sick. He made my juice and I wanted the juice so bad I never said anything. Funny, cause I usually do. I went back and watched him and learned dude is not clean, handles his cell phone, and will touch whatever without washing his hands. I never noticed any of the ladies doing that and they are clean. I was really craving for a smoothie last Saturday so I found myself at Juice Appeal, thanks to Yelp! It was a warm, sunny day in Berkeley and so a freshly made smoothie sounded delicious. My sister ordered a 16oz mango smoothie, and I decided to go with the 24oz berry one. As they called out my name to give me my order, I hear my sister take a sip of hers and say "too sweet." Immediately I hoped that mine would be just fine but nope. Too sweet. I'm not sure if it's because we went for the fruit/berry section of the menu. Maybe we should have ordered from the veggie/organic one? Mine had sherbet in it which might be the answer to why our smoothies were so unnaturally sweetened. It tasted like Flintstones children's vitamins (shout out if you know what I'm talking about!). I was pretty disappointed. I ended up going to my sister's place and used her blender to add more fruit to dilute the sweetness. I watched as 6-7 large carrots were annihilated by a silver contraption to become my small 16 oz juice and I thought 'oh the carotenoids and vitamin A!' And I was pleased. Just imagine how many carrots inhabit a large carrot juice! The prices are more affordable than other juiceries in the downtown/North Berkeley area and they usually churn them out pretty quick if you're in a hurry. They have other veggie juice combinations with beets, spinach, wheatgrass, etc and you can get a stamp card for buying 10 smoothies or veggie blends and they will reward you with the 11th for free! It's quite small on the inside and only has one or two tables on the sidewalk for seating so it's definitely a to-go establishment for me but usually I'm dropping by before or after practicing at Yoga to the People anyway. My two experiences at Juice Appeal were totally different all due to the man behind the counter (possibly the owner). I had seen Juice Appeal several times walking from campus to Shattuck and decided to give it a shot one day when my friend and I were in the mood for smoothies. The man behind the counter (I will now just refer to him as TMBTC) was extremely friendly and greeted us warmly. He asked us if we were students at Berkeley and told us that there was a student discount. Of course we were excited about the discount, being college students and all we try to save any thing we can. The smoothies are on the expensive side, the average is probably around 4 dollars for a medium sized drink. The drinks are all pretty heavily juice (hence the name) and sherbet based, not like a creamier type of smoothie that uses frozen yogurt. They are satisfying when you are in the mood for something more refreshing and less heavy. I forgot what drink I got exactly, but I just remember being happy with my experience at Juice Appeal. The student discount, friendly service, and solid smoothie warranted future trips. During our next (and last) visit to Juice Appeal TMBTC was completely unpleasant and made us feel unwelcome. He was in a crabby mood and didn't even seem to want to take our orders. When we ordered our drinks he just bluntly repeated what we wanted in a snappy voice. As he rung us up, we noticed that he did not give us the student discount so we asked about it. He just stated point blank that the student discount had never even existed, and it just sounded like he was angry at us for even asking about it. Even if he was having a horrible day, I don't think it's right for anyone to treat a customer in such a condescending and hateful manner. Needless to say, my view of Juice Appeal was tarnished because of this incident. I don't need to go to a place that serves mediocre smoothies with crappy customer service from the TMBTC who is seemingly bipolar. read more

I've come here several times, because I live in Berkeley. For goodness sake , how is this place cash only in these modern times? I can even pay for things with my phone at other juice bars. Worst acai bowl I've ever had. Acai blend is super melted, even more than a smoothie. Minimal fruit added. The granola sucks. Even the Jamba juice acai bowl is 1000x better than this. I get a little frustrated with this place. The smoothies are all very different, which can be great, but they are totally inconsistent. I had a cantaloupe smoothie the other day that really was just like orangey chunks of ice. Wasn't drinkable through a straw at all. Then sometimes it will be really really amazing. Same with service. Sometimes the service is perfect, and other times I have to wait forever for the kids to stop chatting and ask me what I'd like. I'll give it a few more tries and see if anything changes. read more

The fresh squeezed juice menu is awesome, and this is one of the only palaces where you can get it. The smoothies are okay, but have lots of sugar juice and sherbet. The cashier/juice maker was not that helpful when I learned it was cash only. She could have told me of the atm across the street, and that she could start my juice while I went for cash. I have a juicer at home so I'm familiar with juicing. But I thought I'd give this place a try since the location was near my gym and i needed a boost of energy. I ordered a green goddess juice (apple, celery, ginger, wheatgrass and spinach), which cost $6 and was 2/3 foam. Total rip off. I'm not coming back to this place again. Not sure why they think they can get away with selling mostly air for $6! I didn't watch the person make the juice but I think they should probably weigh the produce to make sure that their workers are being consistent. read more

This place has the potential to bo so much more than it is. They have crappy ingredients, no nut milks, only soy or whey based proteins. They are missing many normal ingredients that juice bars should have, and their menu is limited. Not to mention the staff is rude and unhelpful and doesnt really want to work. What this place needs is a makeover. Sometime to come in and give life to it. Because even though its a raw juice bar its lifeless. The most rude service in the world from a supposed "part owner" the place was empty which is rare. I usually get smoothies from them and they are so good ! As a full time cal student you just kinda need something quick. My friend and I were not greeted. The "owner" continued talking while I just stood there for 5 minutes!!! And proceeded to have an attitude as if I was in the wrong for wanting to place an order. As she made a snide remark to her coworker I told her she was rude for that , she told me that she refused my service and gave me my money back. A guy who works there told me that this is the busiest intersection of people in Berkeley. And I can believe it! Their smoothies are good because they put care into them and because they use fresh fruits and vegetables. I once gave my co workers a dollar and asked them to buy me a snack on their little outing. I told them to surprise me. They came back with a shot of wheat grass. It was actually really good. It's too acidic though for me to drink every day. I have heard of people drinking a shot of wheat grass rather than coffee in the morning. Supposedly it is a wonder drug. Anyways, point is: this place is pretty cool. read more

I love fresh, fruit smoothies and juices. It's a great alternative for lunch and you'll be left feeling energized and light. I'm always making my own smoothies for breakfast and my afternoon snack with my handy-dandy bullet - mmm.. frozen blueberries and mangos from Trader Joe's.
