Stopped by Julio's mid-afternoon. It wasn't as busy as I assume it usually is. The food was amazing. I had the grilled chicken chalupa (which is a tostada). It was amazing! Refried beans, cheese, chicken, and I added avocado. Delicious. It was so great. My friend had beef fajita tacos with rice and received beans. Loved it. We loved the chips and salsa we were given. Sweetbabyjesus I love this place. I just got back from my first trip to Austin and I can't stop thinking about the food. I got the chicken enchiladas and the chicken fajita taco. I absolutely recommend the green sauce on the enchilada -- it just has a really unique flavor that sets it above any other enchilada I've ever had. I also really adored the chicken fajita taco -- the veggies were perfectly cooked and their chicken is really delicious. This is definitely the type of restaurant I would recommend the chicken -- which is pretty rare for me. All in all, the meal was perfectly seasoned and much lighter than typical Mexican food. I was pretty much ready to reorder my entire meal. It was just that good. We went again for breakfast tacos another day. They were fine (though, I preferred Torchy's), but I don't think their greatness really compared to their dinner plates. Seriously eat here Austin people. You can't beat Julio's for amazing rotisserie chicken, great mexmarts and margs, and an all-around perfect neighborhood spot to hang out and enjoy an evening with friends. Definitely the place we go more than any other, and for good reason. Stella and Julio, Jr. make sure everyone is treated like family. The food is always super fresh, homemade, and delicious. Once it actually gets cold (and by cold, I mean below 70), I crave their incredible caldo. One of my favorite winter dishes. Hubs loves the nachos. Salsa is scrumptious, guac is great. I really love the food here but sometimes I can't get as much stuff as I want because they only accept cash. I'm not gonna use some general ATM that charges me a fee to withdraw money. Fuck that with a capital F, yo. My go-to is the chicken taco. For only $3 and some change you get a healthy portion of delicious, tender, pulled rotisserie chicken (I think that's what it is), lettuce, tomatoes, and the perfect amount of melted cheese. The tortilla is always a little crispy which makes every bite a momentous occasion. The salsa is spicy and the margaritas are strong, just how I like my Mexican restaurants. read more

This is me and my boyfriends go to date restaurant. Enchiladas are the bomb! They top it with delicious green salsa or red- your choice. Also comes with tortillas which are always so hot and fresh and beans and rice. The staff is also very friendly and the restaurant is small and cute. Can't wait to go back. I really wanted to like this place as it is a local business, but the food my friend and I ordered was not impressive. She ordered the nachos and I ordered a chicken salad. Service: I had thought about ordering something else and had asked about a meal containing food I am unable to eat to which the lady at the counter rudely replied to, causing people in the line behind me to literally laugh at me. That behavior was completely unacceptable from the lady behind the counter as it was a rude tone and seemed to make fun of my dietary restrictions. Food: For the salad, I know this isn't a speciality of theirs, but the lettuce seemed old and there were only options of balsamic or ranch dressing which I felt like was limited. My friend did not like the nachos either as she said the toppings were good but the chips were not. COVID Safety: The tables outside are way too close to each other even during non-Covid times as I could hear everyone around me's conversation as we were bumping chairs. This is especially unacceptable during Covid times. Overall, my friend or I will not be returning. Maybe they have better meals but this experience is not worth me trying it again. read more

One of the great family owned cafe's in Austin--and it's real tex-mex! It's about the food here--no scene. They roast their own chicken so it's always succulent and tender. Amazing caldo de pollo that will cure anything--okay maybe not covid. The best chalupas and green enchiladas in town. And if you are watching your weight--you can get a piece of that fresh roasted chicken with a huge salad. The guacamole and salsa are so fresh--maybe the best I've had. Amazing margaritas, plus they will make a delish alcohol free version for nondrinkers. I've eaten at Julios for 30 years. I hope to eat here for 30 more. It's the best. read more

These guys have great Tex Mex! I have been to most of the Tex Mex places in Austin and this place is among the best if not the best. Basically it comes down to fresh ingredients and a good cook on them. I like the migas and roast chicken especially. while visiting friends in Austin last weekend, all my husband really wanted was good Mexican food (something there's not much of where we live). Julio's was recommended to our friends so we decided to try it for brunch. we all ordered the exact same thing - Huevos Rancheros. I had to fight my urge to order tacos because it sounded so good. none of us were disappointed. it was the perfect amount of food - all cooked perfectly. when we were finished, there were four empty plates in front of us. next time we're in town, we'll definitely be coming back here. This place would be a great 4 star place but for the service and the cash only. I went here for brunch a few times and I'll explain what was memorable about this place: 1. The food is good and affordable. 2. On all occasions I've been here, it took forever to get our food. Most recently, I placed my order for two bacon and egg tacos at 10:55 and received my two bacon and egg tacos around 11:40. C'mon, really? Over forty minutes for two bacon and egg tacos? It was especially frustrating because the restaurant wasn't even slammed or anything. 3. They only accept cash. I rarely carry cash. On my most recent visit, despite my desire to order a higher-priced menu item, I was prevented from doing so because I didn't carry enough cash. Because the food was quite good and reasonably priced, I would like to come back and have my opinion of this place redeemed, but it'll be a while before I go here again. read more

Additionally, the staff takes care of you--we were received with additional chips (you do have to pay for chips and salsa, unfortunately)--and the portions can satisfy even the largest of patrons. The various combinations give way to tacos, enchiladas, and the sort, coming alongside tasty rice and beans. I, however, find their $10 whole chicken to be the most viable option. Though the meat possessed a slightly dry texture, I still appreciated the char and poultry flavor. Their flour tortillas, housemade, are enormous, to boot. Nothing stands out above the rest at Julio's, but it just feels like a perfect everyday Tex-Mex, what with its healthy options, local ambiance, and low-key menu. We checked out Julio's this last Saturday night since we were craving some more authentic mexican food (no knock on tex-mex) and had heard that Julio's was a Hyde Park staple. It is also insanely close to our house making it quite convenient. We went right before happy hour ended at 6pm (awesome for a place to have HH on a Saturday night) and ordered beef nachos and green chili enchiladas with a happy hour margarita and a beer. The place is small on the inside but we found a table for two with no issue. The margarita was great for the price. Our food was ready quite quickly which was nice and the plates were large. A couple quick notes: The salsa that came with both plates had some serious kick. Good for people who enjoy extra spice but should be used with caution for those who do not. The green enchiladas tasted great and rice and beans were some of the better we have had in town. Nacho's were excellent with plenty of beef and included guacamole which for $9 was a welcomed site. Overall Julio's provided a much more authentic Mexican food experience closer to what we are used to having lived in Southern California. The price is right, the place is close and the people are nice. We want to go back and try some of the tacos that looked excellent. Only small knock as many others have mentioned is CASH only and they charge for chips and salsa, but it is what it is. read more

Went to Julio's because it was recommended to us by a friend who lives in that neighborhood. First off this place is cash only (so that's important to know). It's the type of place where you order and pay up front and then grab a number. I usually like places like this because if you're in a hurry, you can get your food and leave pretty quick. I had the beef fajita taco plate: flour tortillas, green pepper and onion veggies, and beef strips, topped with fresh chilled lettuce and fresh tomatoes. It was great! We also got the queso and the house salsa. I think I walked away loving the salsa the most. It was spicy but not over the top. It was the best house salsa I've ever had. Go back to the counter and tell them that my single taco can not possibly be the chicken fajita taco plate. Confusion in the kitchen. Eventually get the actual chicken fajita taco plate. And I got to keep the extra taco. Score! But really, it sketches me out that the guy can bring out the obviously wrong item and not even notice. Food wise, it's basic tex mex. Nothing fancy going on here. The food was fulfilling, if not particularly memorable. And it's cash only. Meh. read more

An old reliable - it's been a few years since I've been back (I remember their location in Clarksville). Julio's has that laid back, good time lovin' Austin vibe - indoor/outdoor seating (doggies welcome outside), affordable, nice mix of people, good coffee, friendly service and simple food done well. Breakfast tacos for my wife (bacon, egg and cheese AND potato, egg and cheese) and Huevos a la Mexicana for me (migas minus cheese and chips, plus fresh fruit, refried beans and corn tortillas). The tortillas were obviously home made - very yummy. The fruit was a good selection (watermelon, grapes, blackberry, strawberry and some other melon) and did I say the coffee was good? The eggs were cooked right - my only two quibbles is that they needed a bit of spice, and the salsa was a bit runny. I gotta go here more often. read more

This place is slightly overhyped. They are famous for their rotisserie chicken, but ive had mixed experiences with it. Sometimes its delicious and tender....other days its been dry and disappointing. I can also agree with another poster that the nachos (the 1 time i tried them) were dry and uneatable after a few bites. However, i LOVE the quesadillas here. Some of the best ive ever had. Also the rice is so fluffy and perfect every time i go. This is pretty much my go-to order here now. This place was pretty good. We were meeting a few friends for a late breakfast. I got a chicken taco and kiddo got the kid's quesadilla. My taco had a huge hunk of chicken in it that was well seasoned and really hit the spot. The kiddo's quesadilla was a little light on the cheese but still okay. I can totally see Julio's charm and would be here often if I lived close by or within walking distance. It's small, but with a lovely patio, in one of the hippest blocks in town.
