WOW - FANTASTIC! We went to Jumpin Catfish for dinner tonight & fell in love with it. The food was all homemade & soo flavorful! They even give you free appetizers of whiteheads & ham, coleslaw & hush puppies - a meal in itself! We shared the generous portions of the Seafood Platter (build your own combo). Ohhh my gosh - it was soooo good. Every thing was fantastic & at such a great price! We've paid more for a fast food lunch. We would highly recommend the Jumpin Catfish Restaurant to anyone who likes great food at terrific prices. Nice people too. Since my husband is a hunter,, we especially liked the hunting theme. They even had Tuesday specials,, all you can wat Quail & Childre Eat Free on Tuesdays! Then there's the cool stuffed wild animals just like at Cabelas only behind glass cabinets. Very cool! My husband works in the Lee's Summit area and decided to stop at this Jumpin' Catfish on his way home from work to pick up dinner rather than stopping at the one in Olathe that we usually go to. Growing up I went to the one in LS a lot. I know they just rebuilt, but I'm not sure what happened after the fire. We always get a few catfish fillets, sides and stuffed crab, which are always more than wonderful from the Olathe location. When he picked up the same thing from the LS location tonight, everything was awful. They only gave us one tartar sauce (Olathe will give you more than you ever need) and the food was extremely dry, tough and bland. There was something odd in the mashed potatoes. We never really figured out what it was. And when I started to eat the coleslaw, I bit down on what looked like a splintered piece of wood from what they would use for a shrimp cabob. How that got in there, I have no idea. The catfish was so dry I couldn't eat it, so I ended up just throwing everything away. We love the Olathe restaurant, even though it could use an interior revamp since the carpet and booths are pretty dated. We've never had any issue there and the food is always delicious. Hope LS can match that again at some point. read more

The food here is fairly average. The hush puppies were good. The coleslaw was excellent. The ham and beans were fine except there was no ham in the beans we got. Mother didn't care much for her chicken livers. The grilled chicken I ordered was the toughest piece of chicken I have ever had to try to eat. Not a huge fan of the restaurant but my husband loves it. The catfish is a little bland for me, however, I must say the waitresses usually make for a very pleasant experience. If fact on our last visit my husband told our waitress he had be craving the beans and she bought him out a to go serving so kind. I just had Jumpin' Catfish via Door Dash. The food arrived hot. This was the worst food from a resturant I've ever had. I ordered a combination platter with a baked potatoe and boiled shrimp. I also ordered the peach cobbler. My husband ordered quail and liver and gizzards. Oh my gosh!!! The fish had no taste and was hard. The chicken strips were soggy and gross. The baked potatoe tasted old. The liver and gizzards were over fried and hard. The peach cobbler had a strange aftertaste and tasted old. The quail was over fried. I called the restaurant to report the issues and was told the peach Cobbler was made fresh today. No comment about the other complaints. I don't believe anything was fresh. My husband and I tried this for our time and the food was okay. I had chicken tenders that were pretty tough and my mashed potatoes where not even warm. My husband had the crab legs and said they were okay. The thing that grossed us out was our waiter. He was an older gentleman with barely any teeth, who's shirt was nasty and his hands were not clean. When he would deliver something he would touch our food and straws. It was very gross. I am not sure about the ones who did not like what they got or the service. But I am here to tell you there was nothing better then sitting down and having great service and AWESOME food. The catfish was better then my grandfathers. HOLY COW!! They bring white beans and ham, hush puppies and coleslaw to the table and you don't have to ask for it. This is a home cooked meal "at its best folks". I told my wife and grandson I would move to Lee's Summit just for this restaurant. What was even more delightful is that our grandson reminded us after we finished that wonderful meal, that all my wife and could do was reminisce about what this food remind us of. Thank you to the whole staff for a wonderful experience, and I am not sure who they got in the kitchen cooking. All I can say is "WOW" Thank you to the kitchen staff as well. Best catfish in Kansas City! This place reminds me of a southern restaurant back in Tennessee with good home cooking. Each meal comes with coleslaw, white beans and hush puppies just like the places back home. The catfish here is some of the best I've ever had and I love the fact that they have all-you-can-eat. They also have other dishes that are all-you-can-eat like shrimp and chicken. They also offer a all-you-can-eat platter where you can pick 5 different dishes for $30 bucks. Jumpin Catfish also has crab legs that I heard was pretty good. The waiters/waitresses are friendly and my food has always came out hot. An added bonus is that they have a tv, so you can watch football on Sundays while you eat. Highly recommend this place. read more

I wanted to update to say how good this unpretentious fill'r up is. It's a not a five star cosmopolitan restaurant. Or a sheik sushi bar. It's down home comfort food. It serves good food, good quantity, at good prices. All you can eat catfish all the time, all you can eat quail on Tuesdays, shrimp on Wednesday, Crab legs on Thursday night, and Friday night offers two lobsters for $22. Elk, Buffalo, and other game items as well are on the menu. With unlimited navy beans, hush puppies, and cole slaw sides. It amazes me how few people are aware it is even here. The best homestyle comfort cooking I'm likely to get outside of my Alabama-born mom and grandma's sunny kitchens. Bonus points, because neither my mom nor my grandma serves up cornmeal-breaded catfish with any regularity. Those looking for something trendy and stylish should probably scoot on down Blue Parkway to Sakura Sushi or similar. Those who don't find servers clad in hunting vests and taxidermied squirrels costumed and arranged as if they are members of a jazz combo to be prohibitively offputting will reap the benefit. The last time we were there, we had the absolutely sweetest and most attentive server, with a tasty southern drawl to match the hushpuppies. The portion sizes are hefty, plan to bring leftovers home. As a former farm girl, I'm a big fan of family-style sides, and those hushpuppies threated to spur a serious addiction. The white beans and ham have the perfect flavor balace (don't you hate it how overcooked white beans can turn into something reminiscent of wallpaper paste? Not happening here, though). The coleslaw was only okay, needs a little kick, maybe some grated horseradish. Last family foray there had us sampling the flavorful catfish, juicy friend chicken, and baked quail. I did not enjoy my food here. I had fried catfish and fried shrimp with french fries. They bring you a bowl of coleslaw and a bowl of ham& beans. I really don't like coleslaw. However, there have been a few occasions where I have had coleslaw that I really liked. This was not the case for Jumpin' Catfish. As for the ham & beans...It probably was the best part of my meal. It tasted ok. There were exactly 3 small cubes of ham in my bowl. Now it's time to discuss the entree. Let's start with the fries. They were cold and did not taste good. I left the whole pile untouched sitting on the plate. The catfish was a crispy, greasy, flavorless mess. There was no seasoning on the fish or the cornmeal breading. It wasn't soggy, but all I could taste was grease and cornmeal. It was not good. The fried shrimp tasted old and greasy. I don't know if I would try this place again. read more

This place is on the decline. The food is average at best and the decor is run down. The service is average. Went here a couple weeks ago and got their chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes. The chicken was overcooked and dry and the gravy on the potatoes was as thick as the potatoes. There was a lot of salt in this dish to try and give some flavor but the attempt failed. I was drinking tea with my meal and waited for 10 minutes with an empty glass before I finally asked another waitress if I could get some more. Down-home southern home cookin' style, you'll think you're at Memaw's. The catfish is light and crispy, the sides are abundant. There's also a host of other interesting things on the menu, including frog legs and quail, but I couldn't resist the catfish (their specialty, after all.) Everything was prepared well, no muddy less-than-fresh taste to the fish, no tough hush puppies. The decor is also just like Memaw used to make, but you were expecting the kitsch, right? Good fish...Hot and delicious. The restaurant consistently serves good food. We went tonight because we had a Groupon which they couldn't (wouldn't) honor. There were signs posted everyone stating that they do not honor Groupons for the Olathe location, but the Groupon actually states it is good for both locations. Oh man am I full! I ordered one piece of catfish meal with wedges. There is white beans and ham, coleslaw, and hush puppies brought to the table. We split a 1/2 pound of peel and eat shrimp. Verdict is I did not order enough fish! The catfish was boneless, tender, and flaky. The cornmeal was perfectly fried with a nutty flavour! Next time its all you can eat catfish all the way! Had lunch at the Jumping Catfish Thursday noon. Grilled Cajun cat fish for me and my wife had three deep fried catfish. Let me tell you it was fantastic and we have had cat fish all over Missouri and Louisiana. The fish was not the only thing that was fantastic. The sides were out of this world especially the coleslaw. This was all topped off by the outstanding attitude and service provided by the waitress. Don't know about the KC location as I only ate at the location in Lee's Summit. For a place that advertises seafood and especially catfish, I was very disappointed. Very friendly staff. Really liked the white beans but the coleslaw was not really good; hush puppies were very dry; popcorn shrimp was hard and slowed little evidence of actually been shrimp at some point. My catfish actually was served with an interior gill still there. I had the lemon pepper grilled catfish that looked like there was lemon pepper but could not tell by tasting the dry but warm portions I was served. This was my first experience there but will try them again. Everybody has bad days and maybe this was the case. read more

Oh my god, this place is awful, nasty and creepy. The decor has not changed since the 70s, displaying dead stuffed animals everywhere. The smell of mold and fish is quite pungent. For those of you who may not know, if fish smells fishy it is NOT fresh. If it smells fishy after being fried, not only is the fish not fresh, the oil it was fried in is rancid. That's what happened to me. I hadn't been there is several years so when I was in the area recently I stopped in to get my favor, fried catfish filets (32.00 worth). After picking up my order I put it in my car and left for home. Within 10 minutes the fish smell was so strong it was my son sick on his stomach. He said it smelled worse than the football locker room. I actually pulled over and threw the fish away, 32.00 in the trash. I'll never go there again. Stay away and avoid hospitalization. read more

Good fish, family style sides. Nice service. Place smells like fish, but its called Jumpin' Catfish. Good selection of fish, seafood, and fowl. Sides include some type of white bean and ham, hushpuppies, and coleslaw. Coleslaw is fine, but I'm rarely excited about that. Hushpuppies are better than the Captain D's I use to get as a kid and the beans with ham are seasoned with black pepper, which lends to some of the flavor. I like them. Specials usually include some type of all you can eat alternating with the day of the week. Its not for everyone, but if you like comfort food I can see this place being for you. read more

They say filer but you get half a filet if not a third. My husband ordered the elk steak and it was a charbroil over cooked dry as a powder puff ground beef burger. We have had elk before and this was not it! The utensils were old and unclean. The decor was grungy. This place use to serve good food, WHAT HAPPEN! Went here a few nights back and was eager to try it as I had never been before. They bring you coleslaw and beans and ham with hush puppies right off the bat, all of that was good. Ordered the fried oysters for approx 14 dollars I got about 8 tiny fried oysters and some seasoned wedge potatoes that were cold. Then there's the service. My husband ordered catfish and when she brought it we asked for some malt vinegar. We waited about 5-10 minutes for it without her bringing it so we finally waved down another server and she got it for us. Then we are sitting there with nothing to drink, never came and asked how the food was, didn't offer refills. She finally noticed we were empty after my husband held his glass up and she says, "oh you need a refill?!?" Gee, ya think? Then at end of meal had to ask for our ticket. It takes a lot for me to not tip a server but this was awful. I ended up giving the other server a tip since she did more for us anyways. Went to pay and complained to cashier about the service which she apologized for but didn't discount anything and just basically brushed it off. If I want seafood from now on I know where not to go. We went in for the all you can eat crab legs. The order came and these crab legs must have sat in water for hours. I have never had crab that you could ring the water out of. The meat in some of the legs was pasty looking.(we didn't eat those). The beans, cole slaw and hush-puppies were good but served before we even gave a drink order. We had fries (cold and soft) and mashed potatoes (luke-warm and tasteless). Service was good unitl we told the waitress we need our check and she disappeared for like 30 mins. Returned with a thanks for being patient and laid our check on the table. We paid at the front desk and about fell down when we realized how much this nasty dinner cost us. Visited here this afternoon. I had the 3 pick your combo, grilled tilapia, grilled catfish, boiled shrimp, and baked potatoe. And of course their endless pinto beans and cole slaw. That was my first time ordering on the light side, I normally get the fried catfish. But it was well worth it. The fish was very tender and seasoned well, and it didn't have a fishy taste to it. This location has been closed for a year due to fire. I was glad they were remodeling because although the food was good the building looked and smelled nasty, carpet filthy so imagine my surprise when they reopened and the place didnt look any better.Foyer hasnt been swept or mopped for months. They painted a few walls and thats it.Carpet still old and stained. The only change is the prices which have increased.I was so disappointed.I dont understand how restaurant owners dont know we want to eat in a clean dining room.We arent going back and its a shame, cause the food really is good. read more
