If you are in the Tucson area, you have to check out Mantis Gourmet. We are in town from out of state for a wedding and so glad we found this spot for dinner. It's a small, clean restaurant with about 9 tables, and the service is impressively fast. The owner, Andy, is hands-on and personally makes sure everyone is enjoying their meal, which adds a great local feel. The Food * Street Dumplings (Fried): We started with these as an appetizer--absolutely delicious! * House Special Chow Mein: My husband really enjoyed this; it was flavorful , good for two and well-prepared * Vermicelli Salad with Chicken: refreshing and colorful dish that balances warm, savory grilled chicken with cold rice vermicelli noodles, crisp raw vegetables, and a zesty, light dressing. Atmosphere & Service Even though it's a smaller space, it's very popular. I noticed a constant stream of "to-go" orders and delivery drivers picking up, which is always a good sign that the locals love it. We will definitely be back the next time we're in town. I absolutely love the bun tofu lemongrass vermicelli here. I get it with their dumpling sauce instead of the fish sauce. It is so flavorful and so fresh. It has become a standing tradition for my husband to use this dish at Mantis as a way to get me excited about something that doesn't involve stopping in busy phoenix for dinner on a long drive back to Tucson. I didn't love the Szechuan hot garlic tofu which was a tad oily when I tried it but now I can't help just sticking with the bun tofu lemongrass vermicelli anyways! My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! Take-out order. So glad Mantis opened back up. It has truly been the only Chinese food I've enjoyed since moving to Tucson. I got the tofu with vegetables in garlic sauce and was tempted to eat the whole thing at once. Luckily, looking forward to a second helping the next day at lunch quelled my gluttonous tendencies. I especially like that they offer brown rice as an option to white rice. They are an eat-in restaurant, as well, but it's not a sit-down kind of atmosphere. I hadn't been back to Mantis since they reopened in their new location. However, I was craving Chinese food (and delivery) and Mantis offers both! I ordered the BBQ Pork Lo Mein and a side of crab rangoons. The lo mein noodles had a great texture, albeit they were a little thicker than I usually like for lo mein. There were plenty of BBQ Pork pieces which was great. The flavor was amazingly savory with a sweet sauce, no spice at all which I prefer. The crab rangoons had a great crunch and were full of flavor. Mantis has a ton of menu options so I'll definitely be getting more food from here in the future! read more

3.5 stars for us. Spicy Salt shrimp was pretty decent. Would like it better slightly less sweet. Will order it without or with less sweetener next time. Wor Wonton soup was good. Broth was tasty and veggies crisp. Wontons appeared to be house made. Beef lo mein was good. Ask for chili oil on the side if you like spicy. Enjoyed the chili oil. Good choice for Americanized Chinese food in this area. Order strategically to avoid bright orange sweet and sour stuff. Service was A+. Owner is friendly and attentive. We could see there are many regulars here. Atmosphere was pretty standard for a family owned Chinese place. Nothing fancy. read more

Arrived at 2pm on a Sunday to a mostly full restaurant. I wanted a to-go order so it was easy to find the menu at the podium. I was greeted by staff & told when I was ready to step forward to the counter. Food was ready in just a few minutes, hot & sour soup was fine, a bit on the sour side & I liked that, the shrimp lomein I really enjoyed, lots of large healthy shrimp & fresh onion, more shrimp than I've ever seen in a single order. The Summer rolls were 2 very large cold rolls that were literally massive. The peanut based dipping sauce was delicious as well & they provided an ample amount for the 2 rolls. All in all I could give the experience 5 stars, based on the meal for taste & value, but since I didn't have time to dine in that's the only reason I gave 4 stars. I'll certainly be back for more, I've tried another nearby Chinese food restaurant & I like that Mantis is a new option I'll try again not far away. read more

They are open again! Went there for lunch today. The good news: the food is as good as ever. I had the egg roll bun and added tofu and it was just wonderful. The bad news: all food except pho is served on styrofoam containers with plastic forks, spoons, etc. Unless you are good with chopsticks you will use a tiny fork to eat your meal. I give them a 5 for their food, but a 1 for the plastic dinnerware and the fact that you have to order at the counter. They bring your food to your table but its now a "fast casual" service model apparently. read more

Mantis is our go to Chinese restaurant in the Marana area. The owners and staff are friendly and professional. The food is always excellent and the portions are usually enough for two meals. We usually go with the carryout and the orders are always ready on time and stay hot for the ride home and dinner. The only suggestion I have is that the egg rolls that come with the combination meals aren't good, in my opinion. read more

Decided to pick up something to go. My picks were all appetizers. Vietnamese eggrolls, steamed street dumplings and the summer rolls. The street dumplings were okay the wrapper was a bit doughy for me. Egg rolls were crunchy and not oily. The summer roll was kind of dry. The egg rolls didn't come with traditional lettuce and herbs. Service was super quick, warm and friendly. The restaurant was basic no big deal I'm about the food usually. The AC and fans made it super comfortable and cool. When Mantis closed down during the pandemic, I think I cried a little. Then when I found out recently that they reopened, I think I cried a little again! I couldn't wait to go and I was not disappointed. I had the Szechuan Hot Garlic Beef and my sister had the Chicken Curry. One of the things my sister and I commented on is every time you eat there, the food comes out sizzling, so you know it is not only fresh, but it doesn't sit under the heat lamp. My fave for Bun, especially Tofu Bun. What is bun? A Vietnamese dish, light & flavorful with thin rice noodles (vermicelli) and broth. My idea of a great lunch or dinner, the add ons like fresh cilantro and lemongrass, it is my go to when I dine here. Inside is basic, a handful of tables and happy people. They are usually busy, so order to go or you might have a short, but worth it wait for a table. Don't get along of Vietnamese food on this side of Tucson, so it's on my regular rotation of places for lunch or takehome dinner. read more

The food tasted great. You can go Vietnamese or Chinese. Tried both were great. I love spring rolls and theirs were some of the best I have had . The price point was reasonable for the quality of the food. We we're their for about 1 hour and no exaggerations at least 15 to go orders were picked up. I have ordered take-out no less than 20 times in the past years and have always given 5 stars and recommend to everyone, however I ordered food on a Saturday afternoon at 3:00PM and the food was off. Things were overcooked, had sauce on the sweet and sour chicken(have always put the sauce on the side in the past so it wasn't soggy when you got it home), the wontons and egg rolls were sub par. I am not sure if they have a new cook or what - but generally this place is outstanding. Service at the counter is top rate. read more

We've had a few meals here, take-out. The service is great and friendly. My wife loves the sesame chicken, and I have to say it's the best I've seen around. I like that you can ask for extra sauce because most are skimpy on sauce. I've had a few different dishes and haven't found one I'm impressed with yet. All are decent, good flavor etc but none have grabbed me. It seems the dishes have a lot of seasoning added which doesn't impress me because I prefer flavor from the cooking not in relying on added seasonings that just pile up on the food. We will go back and hopefully I'll fine a dish I like as much as my wife has. read more

I have decided that this is my new favorite Chinese food restaurant. If I ever eat Chinese food again and it isn't Mantis Gourmet, I am settling. My group decided on this location as we returned from an event in this side of town. My drive will be lengthy to get here to eat Chinese food but I am confident it will be worth it. 10 STARS! Service is very fast. The food was some of the best we've ever had between Tucson and Las Vegas. Everywhere you look it's CLEAN! Mantis looks from the outside to be a hole in the wall carry out place only. There were never any less than 5 to go orders sitting on a back table waiting and always 5-7 people inside waiting on orders. The owner was cleaning tables, seated us, took our orders and served us himself. We had the special dinner combo between 5 of us. Beef chop suey, pork sweet n sour, cashew chicken, orange chicken, pork fried rice, and something else I can't remember. $115 is all it cost us! All of us loved everything! Usually there's one or two items that aren't up to par but not at Mantis!! It's a ways away from where we live, but all of us agreed we've found the one good Chinese place in Tucson!
