A cousin has brought over cakes from Butter& on numerous occasions, and they've been a hit each time. Beautifully crafted with the outside layers so you can see both the cake and frosting layers. I absolutely love the unique-esque of flavors here. The first cake I tried from Butter& was their brown butter lemon cake. It was a bit too sweet for my liking, but love the sound of that flavor combination. It was great texturally. The second one I tried was their lychee raspberry. Wow, they really get that lychee flavor super well there! Very impressed. This one was more to my liking, and it was as equally as beautiful as the first one. I recently got a small expose cake for my partner's birthday. I had tried a slice of their brown butter and meyer lemon cake when I stopped in the store and loved how light and subtly sweet it was. When I saw that they have a lychee and raspberry cake, I knew I had to get that for a birthday cake! It's simple to place an order online and pick up is at their Dogpatch location. Everything was super smooth and I grabbed candles in store when I went to pick it up. The cake was gorgeous with gold lettering on top (you can customize it but I went with the traditional happy birthday). Now let's next talk about service. I had this cake delivered because I couldn't pick it up and it was exceptional service from beginning to end. The Butter& team was in communication with me 24 hours after I put in my order and made sure all my phone numbers were updated on file so they would be able to contact me or my girlfriend. On top of that, I wanted a golden custom script but sadly what I wanted to say wouldn't have fit on the cake. I didn't realize this was a $20 extra fee and ended up paying for it. Thankfully the staff was so on top of it, that they emailed me the following morning and made sure that this wasn't a mistake. I ended up getting a refund for the $20 after my cake was delivered without even having to contact them. This alone sold me on the integrity of the business let alone the quality of the cakes. I was super thankful. Last but not least let's talk about the delivery. The window I chose was 10-10:30 AM and my cake came by 9:50. I couldn't have asked for more prompt and professional service. So. After going through this experience, ordering delivery, and tasting the cake, I would highly highly recommend Butter& to anyone and everyone. The price you are paying for is not only for the cake itself, but to ensure the workers here at Butter& also receive a fair living wage. That alone is enough for me to want to become a long time customer. The cake just like all of their varieties was simple, everything tasted freshly made, and had notes of cinnamon that really made it a perfect indulgence for the Christmas season. The strawberry & cream cake was a delightful take on the traditional cake and the strawberries and cream also tasted extremely fresh and not filled with chemicals and sugar like the comparable store bought variety or ones from 85 degree bakery. What I love the most about the experience at Butter& is how knowledgeable and excited the staff are when it comes down to talking about cakes. They used words that I had never heard before to see if I was eating it now or later to ensure they brought the cake down to the right temperature. And when I bought it for the Christmas dinner back in Fremont, they gave me all the steps needed for proper refrigeration, and time needed to temper the cake to be served. Converse to the cake, the frosting is light and relatively airy. Vanilla cake has plenty of visible vanilla beans in the frosting which I love--you can see, smell and taste the real vanilla. Not too sweet, so I can more easily eat this one. Lemon brown butter (?) cake had 2 layers of frosting--brown butter (?) and lemon curd--in between each cake layer. Lemon is not my choice of flavor in dessert ever, and this curd was definitely on the more tangy side. It was fine, but this cake is super sweet and incidentally not at all what my hubby ordered--they must have switched cakes. He ordered hazelnut or something and he has the receipt to prove it. My expectations were sky-high, especially after driving in from Fremont through cold, intense SF traffic for my 40th birthday cake search. The shop is cute and minimalist. However, the first hurdle was customer service. I pointed out a beautiful design on their own website, only to have the staff member insist they don't do custom orders. It took a frustrating conversation to confirm they did, in fact, offer that specific style. For a high-end specialty bakery, this initial confusion was a major turn-off and felt surprisingly unprofessional. Next, I needed samples. They did not offer me smaller tasting portions, a baffling business choice for a bakery that specializes in wedding cakes. I bought the three available full-sized flavors to take home. After all that effort, the cake needed to be transcendent. It wasn't. A varied group of six people sampled them, and we were universally underwhelmed. The flavor combinations were just "fine." They weren't bad, but they were certainly not worth the price, the trip, or the relentless hype. The Verdict: While the bakery may appeal to others, Butter& fell short for me. Really do not understand the hype. I was gifted 2 cakes from here for my birthday (out of town friends googled the best bakeries in SF and this came up) and wow, they were both so disappointing. Lemon cake had a horrible crumb and artificial lemon flavor. Hazelnut chocolate had a little better texture but still overall tasted stale with forgettable frosting.
