Butter & is a premier cake bakery in San Francisco. They create elegant special occasion cakes, with flavors that are unique, and change seasonally. Getting married? They offer a five slice option for cake tasting. You can purchase an additional slice from the seasonal selection for an additional cost. The tasting is enough for at least a few bites from each slice. I like the option of ordering the "sampler" and having the tasting in your own home. The designs for their cakes are that simplistic beauty that stands on its own. It's a very elevated look. The price point is on the higher end. Current flavor offerings are: lychee raspberry, brown butter/lemon, hazelnut/chocolate, double chocolate, and cookies and cream. You can walk in and purchase a slice for around $10.00. The offerings are whatever they have available. Lovely staff and a lovely experience.

Butter& has such beautiful cakes, and I've been wanting to try them for the longest time. I ended up trying the cookies and cream cake along with the lemon cake, and personally thought they were just okay overall. The lemon cake was definitely the better of the two, while the cookies and cream tasted pretty average to me. The inside of the shop was super cute, and the staff were friendly as well. I've always wanted to order a full cake from here, but considering the price point and taste, I'm not sure it would be worth it unless you're mainly going for the aesthetics.

I only have the best things to say about Butter&. The sweetest people work at the cutest cake shop in the Dogpatch. The signature cakes are not to be missed and their monthly seasonal flavors are a delicious, creative surprise. I usually stop by for a slice on my way home and have ordered full cakes in the past. They're incredible.

I recently got a small expose cake for my partner's birthday. I had tried a slice of their brown butter and meyer lemon cake when I stopped in the store and loved how light and subtly sweet it was. When I saw that they have a lychee and raspberry cake, I knew I had to get that for a birthday cake! It's simple to place an order online and pick up is at their Dogpatch location. Everything was super smooth and I grabbed candles in store when I went to pick it up. The cake was gorgeous with gold lettering on top (you can customize it but I went with the traditional happy birthday). The cake layers were gorgeous and I loved the lighter than usual lychee flavored buttercream and the tart raspberry jam in between the cake layers balanced out the sweetness perfectly. Would definitely recommend Butter& for celebration cakes or just if you're craving a slice of cake. They have seasonal/monthly special flavors as well which I'll definitely need to try in the future.

The cake shop has been on my list a long time and I was finally in the area. I only wanted a slice of cake. Out of the three options they had, I went with the brown butter and Meyer lemon. The cake was moist and yummy. The flavors worked well together. Even so, I cannot justify coming back and spending $9 for a slice that's about the size of my fist.

There are not that many places that can live up to its hype but Butter& can. Don't even debate ordering from here, just do it. I ordered the brown butter and meyer lemon cake for my girlfriend's birthday and it was probably the most delicious cake I ever had. As Paul from Great British Bakeoff would say "I want the lemon flavors to punch me in the face" and this cake indeed did just that. The lemon was sour enough to pack a punch but not overwhelming enough to be like a war head hard candy. The brown butter balanced it out excellently and I am so excited to try future cake flavors. Now let's next talk about service. I had this cake delivered because I couldn't pick it up and it was exceptional service from beginning to end. The Butter& team was in communication with me 24 hours after I put in my order and made sure all my phone numbers were updated on file so they would be able to contact me or my girlfriend. On top of that, I wanted a golden custom script but sadly what I wanted to say wouldn't have fit on the cake. I didn't realize this was a $20 extra fee and ended up paying for it. Thankfully the staff was so on top of it, that they emailed me the following morning and made sure that this wasn't a mistake. I ended up getting a refund for the $20 after my cake was delivered without even having to contact them. This alone sold me on the integrity of the business let alone the quality of the cakes. I was super thankful. Last but not least let's talk about the delivery. The window I chose was 10-10:30 AM and my cake came by 9:50. I couldn't have asked for more prompt and professional service. So. After going through this experience, ordering delivery, and tasting the cake, I would highly highly recommend Butter& to anyone and everyone. The price you are paying for is not only for the cake itself, but to ensure the workers here at Butter& also receive a fair living wage. That alone is enough for me to want to become a long time customer. With that said, I hope my review pushes you over the edge to order from this wonderful bakery and cheers to the owners for running an amazing business. P.S. One small feedback. You should just create another menu item under the personalized message option that says "Leave Blank" to prevent more experiences like mines. More so because I can only imagine how time consuming it must be for your staff to double check with every customer. Other than that everything is great and easy to navigate.

    Lychee and Raspberry cake
    Patrick P.

First time customer here and definitely will not be the last Worth it? Yes! - Ordered a Lychee & Raspberry cake for a going away party in the smallest size available and for the price $, I would say it is absolutely worth it! Ordering: - It was super easy on the website and seamless which made it less stressful when ordering last minute (ordered 2 days before when it was needed which was their standard anyways). Delivery/ Pick up: - I decided to pick up rather than deliver (which could honestly turn into a nightmare especially if it is cake) right before they closed and it was convenient that they were able to contact me through text with updates. Better to pick it up yourself for that peace of mind. Customer service: - As I walked in, my cake was very much ready and the host greeted me with clear instructions of when to keep the cake out before consuming for best quality (instructions also included with the cake). They also wrote a letter that I've asked to be added on the side. Writing on the cake was beautifully done. Letter was nicely written, or typed? Packaging was very secure and cake had no chance of sliding around. Now to the cake itself : - Flavor was absolutely amazing. The lychee and raspberry could not be missed from every bite! It stayed moist and even after days, it was still fragrant and flavorful. - Easy to slice and serve with no mess at all. Each slice off of the cake was clean cut and it stayed pretty. Overall : Highly suggest Butter&! I ordered this cake was for someone else (who is not a huge cake fan but they LOVED it and enjoyed the flavor so much) This cake was cakin' even for its size. Delicious baking by the team at Butter& and I look forward to trying other flavors! I'm getting it for myself this time Thank you for fulfilling our night as well as satisfying our sweet cravings Butter&

Wedding cake for 26 and a gluten free small cake.

If I could give them more than 5 stars I would. We got our wedding cake from here and it was the easiest part of the whole wedding. I loved that we could do a tasting at home and we were then able to include my mom and dad via zoom. The communication and ordering was seamless and the staff was so responsive to email questions and scheduling for drop off concerns we had. The drop off at the venue went off without a hitch and our cake was ready to be cut when we were ready! For our anniversary they sent us a little order reminder and we got a cake to cut on our one year anniversary! So happy with our choice and loved the cake?

Mini 2 tiered strawberry & cream kintsugi marble cake
    Jessica H.

My best friend ordered a mini 2-tiered strawberry & cream kintsugi marble cake w/ fresh flowers for her wedding. I can't speak on the ordering process, but I was the contact person for delivery & that process went very smoothly. The day before delivery, I received a text from the bakery with an update/confirmation that the cake would be delivered on the expected date & time. On the day of, I received tracking information & the cake was safely & timely delivered to the restaurant. The cake itself was not too sweet. The strawberry compote/jam in between the layers of vanilla cake was nice & tart and complimented the cream on the exterior. Overall this was a very lovely wedding cake.

    Alicia L.

A lot of friends recommended their cakes since I am looking for a wedding cake. I was checking their website and saw they have a cake tasting option. I ordered and it was soo good! I loved all the options which is going to make picking a cake so much harder. The staff was super friendly and they make ordering online for the cake tasting and pick up so easy. I am def going to be ordering cakes from here. It is so bright inside which makes the place so inviting.

    Small Lychee + Raspberry Cake
    Stephen L.

Butter& truly does have high quality cakes and flavors. We saw the lychee raspberry cake and had to try it. The raspberry jam/paste had a nice natural flavor, sweet and slight fresh tartness. The frosting had a slight lychee flavor, but I was hoping it would be a bit more noticeable. It was still light and delicious. The cake itself was quite dense. Good moisture level but very packed and dense. You can tell the cake was made fresh and they provide detailed instructions on how to best enjoy it. Pickup was super straightforward and the inside of the bakery is modern and nice. High quality cake, but definitely a steep price. In terms of value, that'd be the one place I would knock it just a bit

    Brown Butter & Meyer Lemon
    Charlotte I.

I've had this bakery bookmarked for ages so I was thrilled when my partner surprised me with one of their cakes for my birthday! He preordered a brown butter and meyer lemon cake and pickup was quick and easy. Their store is bright and clean and you can purchase single slices of their cakes too! First impression: what a beautiful cake! And such detailed instructions for transport, storage, and serving. We refrigerated the cake since we were eating it much later that day, but took it out 3 hours ahead of time as advised before slicing. The cake was delicious! It was moist, had a wonderful lemon flavor, and the buttercream was rich but not overly sweet. I don't usually like cake much because it can be overly sweet but I loved this one and would definitely order from them again!

These cakes are delicious -- there's no arguing that! I was excited to order one for a Friendsgiving to share with friends that have not had Butter& before. I ordered the cake to arrive 1.5 hours prior to having to leave, so there would be plenty of time in case of traffic, etc. I noticed 3:30 pass... 3:45, 4pm, and still no delivery. I texted the number provided and was met with pretty poor customer service -- just telling me to contact DoorDash because that's who they use for deliveries. Also kind of shocked given the caliber of this business they'd use a service like that for deliveries. Anyways - my cake is now on its way, and will get here late, making me late to the dinner. Hoping the Dasher handled the cake with care. Just a disappointing service experience that I was not expecting from a company like this! Lesson learned - go pick up the cake myself. Update: was refunded the delivery fee plus a small portion of the cake price because of these issues

Yes, we partnered with a delivery service that does serve that area. You can find the fees by city on our website in the How It Works section here: https://butterand.com/pages/how-it-works#handoff. Just a quick caveat that the fees are a little high…

How many days can I leave the cake in the fridge before the event?

Hi there! Our cakes can be stored in the fridge up to 5 days after you receive them.

    Do they make vegan cakes?

Hi! Unfortunately we do not have any vegan options at this time.

    Plant base ingredients?

We don't offer vegan cakes yet.

Do you make gluten-free cake as well?

Yes! We have multiple gluten-free options available for no additional charge.

Does their cake need to be refrigerated?

Our cake can be out for up to 4-5 hours. Afterwards, it should be refrigerated.

All of our cakes come in a box so they're easy to transport or store.

There are three Arsicault locations, but this is the original, opened in 2015 (or so the internet told me). Our hotel was closer to the Tenderloin location, but that area wad sketchy. The line was 15 people long, but moved incredibly fast. The menu is on the front glass window (no prices,). Once you enter, you can see the pastries and corresponding prices. Unfortunately, you enter when it's your time to order, pay grab your food, and then leave. We went twice and our whole interaction was less than a minute per trip!!! We had many things and there were only winners. If you don't want to spend $60 like we did, here are my thoughts on what we tried. Croissants: the almond was the winner by a long shot!!! I liked the ham and cheese, but only if you need a savory option. Chocolate chip croissants are not my favorite, but my daughter ate the whole thing and loved it. The almond chocolate chip had too much going on and it's the only one I would not recommend. The kouign amann is delicious and worth getting. The morning bun is good, but only if you want a bit of citrus flavor (orange zest). The monkey bread was good, but after all the other pastries, it didn't stand out. It seemed similar to the kouign amman in retrospect and I'd need another side by side to really sort out the differences. The chocolate chip cookie is delicious, but beware that it is salted. My son wasn't a fan, but the rest of us liked it. A bonus if you go the Richmond Ariscault -- it's next door to Breck's, a great coffee shop that has seating. Looks like most Arsicault customers grabbed their pastries and went next door to get coffee and sit down. We followed suit and it was a perfect pairing. After our pastries, we went to Golden Gate to walk off the meal. An epic morning!!!

The storefront is small so you pretty much walk inside to tell them what you want, pay, and get your pastries to go. No place to sit; only drip coffee offered. The croissants are crunchy on the outside and flaky on the inside. One of the best croissants in San Francisco. They don't offer a huge selection of pastries but the more popular ones are the croissants and Kouign Amann. With the croissants they offer a number of variations including almond, chocolate, ham and cheese. They also sell scones but I would stick with the croissants in my opinion.

This most recent time I arrived just before opening and waited about an hour and a half for my delicious strawberry roll. If I had got there earlier, I think the line would've been only about 20 to 30 minutes so if you are an early bird they allow you to line up anytime after around 7:45 AM. I listened to a new album and great podcast while I was in line, it can be a great solo activity and makes the wait go by fast! I also enjoy talking to the people around me about whether or not they've been here yet and hearing what their favorite items are or what they're excited to try. This time I met someone who had brought their family member all the way from Mexico to try! I think a lot of the people who are frustrated don't understand that there will be a wait. The owner has explained on her Instagram that the reason they cannot simply bake more is because they are not baking pastries that are designed for bulk creation. They are all handmade small batch goods that simply cannot be made in large quantities. I think when you go into it understanding that it's going to be an experience that more often than not comes with a wait time it is much more enjoyable. I did see some teenagers show up with their parents who immediately seemed like they did not want to get in the line. The thing about lines though is that typically if there is a consistent line somewhere that means it's good! I really admire the parents that did wait with their kids because it is worth it! We all need a little bit of whimsy in our life and these goods and the wonderfully magical people who work there make my day a little brighter each time I go in. The shop itself is decorated so well, you can tell that the cookbooks and tools are not just props on the shelf. They are actually used. There are also a couple glittery surprises that I will leave for you to find out... I cannot recommend this little bakery enough. If you are in San Francisco, even just for a day, add it to the top of your list and start your day with a treat you won't be able to find anywhere else.

The namesake Pistachio Cardamom croissant was excellent for a filled croissant. It had excellent layers and the cream was just enough to add a lusciousness to each bite that wasn't too heavy. The madame lorraine was my other favorite. It was meaty and rich with the soft baked runny yolk and the light touch of rosemary was just enough to accentuate the bite. The not as good...a standard butter croissant. Maybe we got a dud but there was a serious lack of layers in ours and it wasn't as crisp or as buttery as I like. The elote corn croquiche filling was also quite salty which was a shame because the pastry layer was pretty good. I still have two more pastries to try but given the weight and the mixed bag, I definitely expected a lot more from Butter & Crumble. Pro tip: get a butter croissant at Arsicault, walk to B Patisserie and get a kouign amann. You'll have both before the line moves here.

We had the drinks right away and I enjoyed their honeycomb toffee latte ($8.25) while my husband ordered a flavored lemonade. The honeycomb itself was sweet and crunchy and you can either pick it out and eat it or stir it into your drink and let it melt. We also brought home a few of their pastries. All of them were fresh and well made. The basque cheesecake was creamy and satisfying without being overly sweet. The chocolate chip cookie had dark chocolate and was really rich and satisfying. The last pastry I forget the name of but it was like a cinnamon roll but with an orange glaze and some cocoa powder, this one was also delicious and not overly sweet. They had some savory options that were sold out when we visited and we would definitely visit again to try those and more items from the menu. We can see why this spot is so popular.

5 stars because of the unique Injeolmi and Kalbijim croissants…read more Injeolmi croissant - so unique and executed perfectly, Kalbijim croissant - very nice and unique. Nice savory flavor Kalbijim salt bread - also nice and savory. A bit too cheesy and not as much galbijim as the croissant. Tayberry kouign-amann - acidic and crispy, a really good more basic pastry Banana chocolate almond croissant - fresh banana, balanced textures and flavor Roti salt bread - texture was disappointing, not as soft with the outer crisp I look for in a really good salt bread, it also wasn't hot, so not fresh even though we went at opening. Coffee crisp surrounding the bread was tasty though!
