Both croissants were flakey and not too buttery. I loved the tartness of the raspberry and passionfruit. I also thought the choco croissant had more chocolate than usual. At arsicault, I feel the fruity pastries are super sweet but this was more tart and way less buttery. It was my first time trying a choux and I was delighted. I was a bit unsure about the passionfruit hazelnut combo at first but it was really good. The hazelnut cream was rich and tasty and perfectly complemented the tart passionfruit filling. Drinks: Iced pumpkin latte with oat ($8): it was pretty good for a 16 oz drink, I asked for light sweetener and they did it well! Iced banana cream matcha: this was the worst drink by far. The matcha is watered down and milky, you can barely taste or see the matcha. The banana cream saved the drink but it's barely a matcha. Iced espresso tonic: it was good for what it is. Food: The mushroom danish ($7.75) was so good! Ambiance: On a Sunday afternoon this place was packed. They have a few tables and I noticed many tend to hog them even after finishing their food. I can't believe this place has no long lines. 5 stars easy. The Traditional Croissant is made out of European butter so expect that umami buttery goodness burst of flavor. It easily became tied at 1st spot of my most favorite croissant in the city in terms of flavor and second in terms of texture. It is really really good, just a tad less crispy. The Cubano Croissant is what really sets them apart for me. The filling is a good mix of both tangy and savory from the protein, the pickles and cheese. Then wrapped in this perfectly laminated and baked pastry that literally shatters with each bite. That top is crazy level crispy! With the 2024 people's choice best croissant award, this spot has loong lines nowadays . Expect to wait 20-30 minutes on weekends pretty much anytime in the morning. Thier croissants are crispy and flaky on the outside and soft and chewy on the outside. But they're a little bit too crispy and crunchy on the outside for my taste. If you're looking for the more Paris style croissant which is the kind I prefer, I think Arsicault is a better bet. We were lucky with the chocolate croissant though which was fresh out of the oven and really good. read more

I came here with some friends on a Sunday morning, and this place was busy. The line was slightly out the door, but it moved fast. My fiance and I ordered a Choux + 6 other pastries (for here + togo), and an orange Pandan vanilla latte. The lemon Choux was pretty good - the cream was refreshing, but I probably wouldn't get it again. I loved the flavor of the black sesame kouign amann, I just wish the kouign amann could be more crispy/flakey on the outer layer. The elote one was just okay; my fiance had most of the breakfast sandwich so I don't remember much of it. If only they could warm up the dine in pastries for us in store, I'm sure it would've tasted a lot better. We saved 3 of the pastries to eat at home; unfortunately, my cat suddenly decided that she wanted to try (steal) human food after 7 years, and ate a whole giant croissant (the one my fiance was actually looking forward to) + the breading part of the kimchi danish. No, it's not cat friendly, but yes, she's okay now and we learned a messy lesson. All I can say is that that cubano croissant must've been amazing for her to steal it out of the box and devoured the whole thing. I did actually get to eat the mushroom one, it was good, but I should've air fried it. SF existential crisis moment: As I stood in line eying the $7.75 mushroom Danish, a homeless person was asking around for $1. SF makes me sad sometimes. I tend to get skeptical at popular bakeries, especially after visiting France where good bakeries are common and equitable, but Juniper is worth a visit if you're in the area. I first heard about it for its award-winning croissant, and Juniper also tends to be included in those must-try bakeries highlights by influencers. (++) The croissants are expensive but solid ($5 for pain, over $7 for the fancy ones), flakey and moderately buttery as you would expect for an award-winning croissant. Croissants are daily breakfast fare by nature, so I suggest appreciating the simplicity rather than anticipating something mind-blowing. (++) Pain au chocolate is filled with delightful 48% cacao sticks of chocolate, a nice rendition of this patisserie staple. (++) The black sesame kouign aman is curious; it looks like a morning bun but tastes like a kouign aman. It had a good ratio of pastry to sesame paste. I still prefer b. patisserie for the kouign aman gold standard, but Juniper's was fun to try. (+) The raspberry macadamia cookie is a hefty $4.50 each, but it's such a perfect cookie with just the right amount of crunch, nuttiness, tartness, and mild sweetness. (+) The cinnamon orange sticky bun is zesty citrus goodness, tastes as good as it looks. (+/-) Another popular item is the bite-sized choux pastry puffs, which come in interesting rotating flavors like hazelnut chocolate passionfruit and lemon juniper. They are a bit small for what it's worth (considering each is literally one bite). It's packaged very aesthetically in a fitted branded box, so I think it makes a nice small gift. The pricing gives you a small discount if you buy 3 rather than 1, and they also have a 1 choux + drip coffee special. There's a range of coffee and tea options, but also on the pricey end so I just went with the choux/coffee pairing special. - I've never seen such pretty packaging for a bakery. The blue matte boxes are very presentable - Staff are friendly, and the line moves at a reasonable pace - The space is nice with tables, tall ceilings, and counter seating for a vibey breakfast - It's paid street parking and can take a bit of circling to find a spot, but not impossible - Gets busy on weekends, don't expect this to be a quick stop. The traditional croissant is excellent, however, the raspberry almond croissant is utter perfection. With an almost impossible blend of texture between flaky croissant and a scone-like exterior, it's elevated with a warm, fresh, tart raspberry filling. I'm long overdue reviewing this place. Metered street parking is available, but parking can be tricky, so plan accordingly. When I arrived, there was a line going out the door. It moved quickly and it was fun to see all the batches of baked goodies coming out of ovens and being loaded onto racks. It smelled heavenly. Ordering is done when you reach the counter with all the pastries. They'll box or bag it according to your order. You can order your drink at the same time. I always order a plain croissant and a Cubano croissant. The Cubano is my current favorite baked savory item in SF! It has a depth and balance of flavor that caught me by surprise the first time I had it. The plain croissant is perfectly crispy and flaky. Anything else is icing on the cake. This spot was VERY popular on a Saturday morning and after trying it, I know exactly why. The quality of the kimchi bacon danish was something that I just cannot get over. The combination sounded different, so I was intrigued and the pastry was so flaky and delicious with the complex and bold flavors of the kimchi and bacon. I got a simple oatmilk latte as well that was a bold coffee flavor that I love an and really refreshed me on a busy weekend morning. Can't believe I have neglected to review Juniper! This is one of my special 'go to' spots whenever I'm in the neighborhood. People often ask what's my favorite bakery and I have to admit it is actually a list - different ones for different reasons. However, Juniper is right at the top. Exquisite croissants, and I can never pass up the adorable choux. (Getting multiples? Get the choux box.). Staff is super charming and all seem to love serving up the products. I feel they are on the same quality of pastries as B Patisserie. They are one of the only places I know that do Choux (pronounced shoe) and they are a bit bigger than Choux on Fillmore. Their mushroom pastry is excellent, very flavorful and savory. I usually get that and a rose latte. This place has a following so it tends to get really busy and recently they took a chunk of seating out for more kitchen room. It was bustling in the morning but became a little less crowded after the AM rush. I enjoyed the zesty zing from the lemon oil on the avocado toast. The crunch of the cucumber and radish gave the toast such a fresh and revitalizing feel. Post climbing. I had wanted to try this place but didn't wanna wait in the line this summer or was too lazy but I went today cuz there was barely a line. The croissant was the kind that I liked from b patisserie that was like croissant x scone/cookie/baked thing? Idk but I like that texture slightly better than the regular croissant. 3.5/5 My friend and I came on a Saturday around 2:30PM. 3PM is their closing time so I was afraid there were going to be no pastries left but to my surprise, they still had some stuff left. We got a Strawberry Matcha Latte (3/5 Matcha color and flavor was not strong) and their Butter Croissant Loaf (4/5 very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside). I absolutely love the laminated pastries at Juniper and recently stopped by to pick up a mid morning treat and grabbed a Black Sesame Kouign-Amann. It was perfectly buttery and flaky with a great black sesame flavor and nuttiness. The black sesame definitely adds to the richness of the pastry but really gives it a unique spin and while I love traditional kouign amanns, this one really has to be the best I've had. FOOD: They have a variety of savory and sweet croissants with unique flavors. Our absolute is their Cuban criossant. IT'S A MUST GET. Their chocolate croissant has the perfect amount of filling and SO ASMR worthy. AMBAINCE: Pretty small interior. The line will be out the door because they don't have space to fit everyone. They do have some seating inside but very limited. Parking was surprisingly easy to find on a Saturday late morning, but it can be hard to find later in the day. SERVICE: Very efficient and friendly. Had a great time sipping and people watching at Juniper this foggy Saturday! Line moved fast, and the pastries were mouth-watering. Service was really friendly and warm! I ended up getting the rose pistachio vanilla latte with decaf coffee and almond milk, and while it took a little while to come out, I thoroughly enjoyed it, although to me it just tasted like a sweet latte. It's possible I didn't hear them call my name, but it was pretty loud in the cafe. We came in on a Saturday around 9am. There was no wait but shortly a short line formed after us. Tried the Cubano croissant, an orange cake which was more like a muffin, a black sesame kouign amann and a pistachio vanilla rose latte. The latte took a while to make. The rose was very light and the pistachio wasn't noticeable. Coffee was good though. I usually don't like Cubano sandwiches but the croissant here was amazing. I love the croissant texture a lot. I would get this again. The orange flavor in the orange cake was very noticeable. I also loved the texture and crunch of their black sesame kouign amann. Although it doesn't have as much black sesame flavor compared to another bakery I've had, I much prefer Juniper's pastry. I found this spot while looking for a coffee shop within walking distance of my hotel. Got there before 9 am on a Sunday and there were only a couple people ahead of us in line and we were able to grab a seat at the bar counter. We ordered black coffee, an oatmilk latte, a ham n cheese croissantwich and avocado toast. I also got an apple caramel Choux pastry. Everything was excellent. The avocado toast was perfect. The bread used was hefty while also delicate in flavor. I was nervous the bread would be too chewy and hard, making it difficult and messy to eat but that wasn't the case at all.
