Neighbor Bakehouse has become a staple in my weekend routine. I love that they offer a great mix of both savory and sweet baked goods. I've tried a variety of items, including the butter mochi muffin and their flavored twice baked croissants, but my favorites are the banana bostock and the mushroom tart. I also appreciate that they serve drinks from Paper Son. I've been getting the Guava Pillow, which is a tonic espresso topped with guava foam, it's such a great caffeine option if you're not in the mood for something milky. The staff are all very friendly, which makes the experience even better. The location itself is a bit awkward in my opinion, as it's on a busy street, but they do offer a few parking spots right in front as well as some outdoor seating. They offer a variety of baked in house items that range from the savory ( mushroom and cheese "tart") to the sweet of banana croissant invention. EVERYTHING is tasty. Items are limited in quantity, so go early. The mushroom green onion tart is delish! It has a generous amount of mushrooms, manchego cheese, and light green onions. It's a lovely flavor profile. The only downside is that it's not given to you heated. Eating it cold was not optimal. The banana "tart" because I don't recall the exact name, is to die for! It's sweet, it's sooo good! It's like banana crack. It has caramelized parts to it, and you won't want to share it!! The double backed pistachio/blackberry croissant is a food group all its own. Recently on a coffee run to get a morning latte at Paper Son next door, I picked up a Banana Bostock to munch on. Well, the wait was definitely worth it! My best friend and I made the trip over for our city day, and it was popping on the weekend. Lots of folks lined up to get their baked goods. She ordered for us, since I had my pup. Ordering was quick; all baked goods are on display. You share what you want, pay, and take it to-go. Service for her wasn't the friendliest, but interactions were minimal. They have some tables outside, but most take them elsewhere to enjoy, which is what we did. I got the Pistachio Blackberry Twice-Baked Croissant, Ube Twice-Baked Croissant, Curry Potato Bourek, and Char Siu Croissant. I definitely preferred the sweet pastries to the savory ones. Each pastry was unique and flavorful. You could enjoy the buttery flakiness alongside the filling, making it a perfectly balanced treat. Here's a hill I'm willing to die on: SF bakeries are elite. I have so much faith in their greatness that I approach most with the assumption that I'm going to find something to love. So I start to question everything I thought I knew when I come across a spot with underwhelming product. Neighbor Bakehouse is a teeny establishment in a beautiful brick building. Their savory pastries called to me but having just eaten lunch nearby, I stuck with a couple sweet treats. I was disappointed with the lack of gingery goodness in the Ginger Pull-Apart. I also thought it was a bit dry, & generally not as fresh as it could be. Pistachio Blackberry Twice-Baked Croissant sounded amazing, but again, not much in the way of filling. When I went to the register, the employee was chatting with her coworker, so I was just standing there until she was done with her conversation. I found that very unprofessional and awkward. I love this spot but have had inconsistent experiences here. The line here can get pretty long, but I work in the area so am able to stop by when there's no line. The service here is always amazing and is my favorite part, and why I'll keep coming back until I find my favorites. So far I've really enjoyed their bread. I came on a Saturday morning and there were a lot of people enjoying their pastries and drinks. The shop was cute and the staff were very friendly. Sadly this shop was a miss for me. I can't believe I've never heard of this place before, it is definitely now one of my top 5 bakeries in SF. I just happened to be here yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon for a work event, and stopped by a few minutes before closing to pick up a ham and cheese croissant. There were so many other cool Asian fusion flavors that looked great too! Even though there was a line, staff and customers were patient as everyone ogled the large selection of breads and pastries. You are able to order coffee at the bakehouse. No indoor seating, a few outside seats, gets noisy/crowded when there's line for bakery, so more of a to go place. Many various croissant options, the one that stood out to me was the char siu. It has a more sweeter honey flavor for the meat, but it tasted so good. Flakey dough as well with good crunch. Home is new in Sunnyvale and it has become my go to spot for espresso, but that's a different review... This five star is for the pistachio croissant. However at their flagship store, the pastries are about $6 each. The selection here is fantastic. Not only do they have pastries, but they have loaves of bread, mochi muffins, coffee using Paper Son beans, and non-coffee options. Service was average. The workers were not super friendly or warm but it got the job done. Our pastries weren't warmed but rather individually bagged. *Guava pillow - 5/5 this was such a unique drink. Its light on the coffee flavor, a bit bubbly, with a sweet guava finish. I would love to recreate this at home because it was so refreshing. Its the perfect summer drink. *Pandan aerocano - 3.5/5 Light and smooth coffee however I couldn't really sense any pandan flavor and it wasn't as sweet as I like my coffee to be. Between the two drinks, I would rather get the guava pillow. *Mushroom tart - 5/5 Pastry base is perfection with buttery layers topped off with melty cheese and sliced mushrooms. When I got here on a Saturday morning, there was a line out the door, but it moved pretty quickly. To be fair, only a couple of people can fit inside of the shop at a time, so there's bound to be a line out the door! All of their pastries are displayed behind a glass window at the register. They have quite a few options, so you're kind of under pressure to decide quickly, since you can't really see the case up close until it's your turn to order. It would be helpful if they posted the offering online beforehand or had a sign with their offerings for the day that you could look at before getting to the front of the line. The pastry I was most looking forward to trying was their Char Siu Croissant. It's filled with sweet and savory pork (more on the sweet side) and is VERY juicy, so be careful when you're biting into this one! I really enjoy savory pastries, so I also got a Mushroom Tart (one of my faves), a Savory Pull-Apart (like a pizza pull-apart bread with pork/ham, peppers, and cheese--also enjoyed this one!), and a Curry Potato Bourek (super flakey). For a sweet item, I got the Ube Twice-Baked Croissant, which was yummy as well.
