july menu: skirt steak croissant, madame lorraine, peach & sweet corn cruffin
    Ashlee L.

Omg!!!! I swear I had Butter & Crumble on my want to try list for YEARS!! And I finally got to try their AMAZING beautiful gorgeous pastries yesterday!! I went around 12:15pm on a Saturday, and the line was short (comparatively) and moved quickly! Pro tip: keep up with their instagram stories because they occasionally post live updates about the line/supply! It only took around 15 minutes to reach the front. Another tip: decide what you're going to get & some back up options (in case they sell out of your first choice options) so you don't hold up the line deciding at the cashier! I think that is the main reason the line sometimes moves slow. Because tbh once you put in your order, it takes like 3 minutes for them to pack it up. I tried 3 pastries from the July menu: Skirt Steak Croissant, Madame Lorraine, and Peach & Sweet Corn Cruffin. I also wanted to try the Bruschetta Danish, but they were sold out of that one. I was definitely most excited about the Skirt Steak from the beginning, and it was indeed my favorite! The croissant was so flakey buttery crispy, it was actually perfection. I love the chipotle aioli and arugula pesto sauces. Wow one of the best pastries I've ever eaten. The madame lorraine was my second favorite. I'm biased though because I love salty a lot more than sweet. The pork was so tasty in this one, and I really liked the parmesan toppings. I don't even like runny egg yolks, but it worked so well with this pastry. The peach & sweet corn cruffin was a little too sweet for me but the peach and corn flavors worked sooo surprisingly well. I NEED to come back to try their other pastries wow. It is 100% worth the hype.

Line was extremely long. 2.5 hour wait on a Friday morning. It was painful. Staff was courteous and came out around 11AM to update the people in line about what's left, what still has plenty, and how ordering should go. Inside is a narrow walkway up to the cashier where I ordered. And then I moved off to the side of a smaller space to wait for my box of pastries and drinks. It is pricy but it was an experience I guess. I would come back for the cruffin but maybe when it's not a holiday weekend.

Omg are you kidding!!!! The best bakery I have EVER been to! Anybody that complains about the wait is simply not meant for a place like this because you do need patience. But you also don't need that much patience when the line moves fast and you are just having a jolly old time in line with your friends. We got almost every single pastry as a group of 8 and my most favorite ones were the brisket (more like chunky steak), strawberries and cream, and passion fruit. Each pastry was filled to the brim and so fresh. They even threw in a free cookie for me for my birthday and even that rocky road cookie was spectacular. Everyone here loves what they do and it really shows in the way they interact with you and in the taste of the pastries. I will most def be coming back!!!!

This place has a rotating menu that changes every month so the pastries and flavors never get old!! The pistachio cardamom croissant is typically a regular on every menu and the inside filling is sooo nice and light! You can try pre-ordering a box a couple days in advance but it's typically hard to secure. If you want to go in person, be prepared to either get in the line by 8:30am or wait three hours. No in between!! update: obviously didn't listen to my previous advice. got there at 9 and got in at 10:30. well worth the wait though. but def get there between 8/8:15am. for minimal wait. passion fruit pastry was sooooo good. filling was incredible. strawberry vanilla bun was sooo good as well. like a strawberry shortcake flavor. rest were also really good.

Finally got to try the specialty menu items!! I committed and went around 8:30 on a Thursday and did not have to wait long - probably an hour or so. I absolutely loved the key lime and elote pastries sooooooo much. When I first came here I just got the regular croissant because I was way too late. But after trying the unique flavored items here I can confirm it's worth the hype. I highly recommend coming here and waiting at least 1 time! The staff are also extremely nice. This is a must try if you visit or live here.

I'm really glad I finally got to try this bakery. My sister and I strategically planned to get in line by 8 AM even though they open at 9 AM. There are maybe 15 people in line already. Once they opened, we only waited maybe 15 minutes before getting inside and ordering. They said we could only order 10 items per group not per person. The service was very kind and I think as quick as they could allow possible. I spent about $55 including tip for four pastries and one iced coffee. They don't put prices on their menu, but I think it's about $10 an item. I think some of the pastries are worth $10 but an iced coffee for $8.50 is an overcharge, I think. My favorite thing that we ordered was the Chorizo & Tot Croquiche, it was very filling and good to share. I also loved their gluten-free Cinnamon Swirl Banana Cake, it's a good slice with some frosting on top. Another great pastry was their Passionfruit Raspberry Pan Suisse. We also really liked the Cheesy Ratatouille Bearclaw. It had a pizza flavor to it. I would order all of those three again and be fine which is those items. I did not love their barbecue brisket sandwich. it was a smaller sized pastry, but they put a couple of good thick slices of brisket. I think it would've been better if it was just the brisket and some creamy coleslaw and no barbecue sauce.

Arrived at 8:05 on a Sunday and waited 90 minutes for pastries. After waiting so long with my sister, we decided to get as many pastries to try to share with the whole family. We liked the lamb croissant which had a surprising amount of lamb and the twice baked strawberry croissant. However both are not "wait in line" good. All the other pastries were underwhelming for us (either they weren't very buttery or the creams had an artificial flavor). We also got the matcha latte (very grassy and grainy), rhubarb matcha (very light rhubarb flavor, matcha was more astringent here), tiramisu latte (nothing special, just coffee with cocoa powder), and the sesame latte (too sweet, light sesame flavor). Would not come for drinks. Place is tiny but once it's open, line moves at a reasonable pace. Would come back to try other pastries but probably not anytime soon as there are so many other bakeries that are better.

We managed to snag a preorder box from Butter and Crumble after hearing much of its hype we wanted to see if it's worth the wait. The preorder box came with randomized drops of what's in season that week, our small box came with Herby Olive Twist, Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat, Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Lamb Pain Suisse. The pastries: they really got their lamination down. The pastry shell is amazingly crispy and really good layers regardless of the type of toppings or fillings it has. The flavor combinations were fun and familiar. It's like getting some of your favorite foods being converted into a croissant. Of the ones we tried I really enjoyed the salty ones like the olive twist and lamb, I was impressed how well the pastry kept crispy even with the sauces. The sweet ones like the caramel were too sweet for me to even finish, but that can be personal preference. After trying all these fun flavors I still think the highlight is def the pastry, will need to try the original croissant next time! Ambiance: the vibe of the bakery was great, lots of hard working ladies and feels like they are passionate about what they do. Bright and airy with lots of pink accents. Would definitely come back again, but probably would not wait over a hour for it because we do have a lot of great bakeries in SF.

My friend was visiting and top of her list was to visit Butter & Crumble. I must admit I was wondering what could I say to avoid the mega line. After her reinforcing how much she wanted to go, we did it. We showed up a Saturday at 8am. Surprisingly the line move within one hour. Inside you are welcome by the kindest, staff ever! They are sweet as their pastries. We even got some free cookies. Honestly, I was scared that we were going to be there for hours but it moved really fast. Inside there are only two seats, expect to buy and go. Go with patience, and a big sweet tooth. My favorite was the double baked peached one and the strawberry one.

My partner managed to get onto their weekly preorder drop. He had been trying for weeks. We got a box of 8 assorted - 3 savories and 5 sweets for about $64. It included, "Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat, Orange Rosemary Pastry, Herby Olive Twist, Blackberry Ricotta Swirl, Morty P (pork!!), Lamb Pain Suisse, Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Brown Butter Pistachio Cookie" They also offer a box of 4 but I'd figured it's so sought after, we'd go for the 8 and damn, the hype is real. When we picked up our order at 9am on a Saturday, the line stretched 2 blocks! I can now see why. I hate that they change their menu monthly because it makes me want to try to preorder another box and it was so hard the first time. It's the best and our favorite bakery in SF for us right now. It's highly ranked up there. Hopefully when they open up their 2nd location, the wait will be much shorter.

I finally got to try B&C! Came on a Friday around 11am and only waited about 20 mins. A few of the pastries were out, but that's fine by me if I don't need to spend 2 hours waiting for them. The banana pecan cold brew was delish (I wish it was easier to just get their drinks) and the savory pastries were particularly good. Next time, I'd get more savory than sweet options. Love the rotating menu too! Beware the long line. Check the Instagram for updates and don't plan to eat there since there is standing-room-only that is taken up by waiting patrons.

Butter & Crumble has been on my list for so long because every time I walked by, the line was insane. First time I tried going around 1pm and they were already sold out even though Google said they close at 2pm. So next time, I prepared. I came back at 10am, with my kindle, waited in line around 40 minutes before finally got to the pastries. From their May menu, I ordered the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin and the Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant. And you know what, just wow... I was shocked. These pastries are seriously next level. The cruffin was my favorite, buttery, unbelievably flaky with layers that shattered perfectly when you bite into it. The strawberry rhubarb filling had the perfect balance of sweet and tart, while the orange blossom mascarpone cream outside had a very light floral flavor. These combination was just god made. The pistachio croissant was also another level . Super buttery, crisp outside, soft inside, with very (very very) heavy pistachio cream filling that tasted very nutty and rich but not too sweet. The cardamom sugar coating made it even better, and aromatic. Every bite tasted so heavenly. Definitely the best bakeries I've had in the Bay.

I decided to see what all the fuss was about and went on a Sunday morning. While the food was undeniably good, I'm not sure any pastry is worth a two-hour wait. I'm always hunting for the city's best bakery whenever I'm traveling, so this was certainly and experience. I ordered the cold brew, the bacon, egg, & cheese, and the pistachio cardamom sugar croissant. The breakfast croissant was great, but the pistachio croissant was the winner. The cream filling was perfect--rich but not overly sweet. It's a fantastic bakery; just be prepared to spend your entire morning in line. No seating inside. You're picking up for to-go. They also have limits for how many pastries a group can order. Check out their signage for more information.

Chocolate Almond Croissant (7.8/10): This one was amazing! I will say that this one is definitely on the sweeter side but it was still delicious. I wasn't wanting my money back. I wanted my coffee drink with my pastry and the no communication. Like, "yours is next, or sorry for the wait. Nothing. Instead I see her going slower and told the customer before me to come back and gave her my espresso shot that was to go in my drink! Very passive aggressive and a power move, unhappy miserable, angry, person. Whoever this person is really rude, and has no business being around people. They need to keep the usual barista up front with long dark hair, who is always bubbly friendly, efficient and has impeccable customer service. The one today was like "I'd rather give you your money back and get the fk out" Rather than work on my customer service. I just think with all that's going on in the world, being kind, compassionate, communicative and accountability goes a long way. You never know what someone is going through. Maybe me coming in for a $5 morning bun and an $6 oat milk latte with my fixed income from being on a medical leave, is what makes my day. I wish for the angry barista, would go through sensitive and diversity customer service training. Because it really felt like she has some homophobia/bigotry towards me.
