I have been coming to JuRin since before I can remember. I've now eaten at Japanese restaurants all over the world and JuRin is still one of my favorites. Maybe it's the hometown in me talking, but I love love love coming here and I bring my out-of-town friends whenever someone comes to visit. After living in Chicago for a few years, I can say that I think JuRin has equal or better food than many of Chicago's Japanese restaurants -- at 1/2 the price. Contrary to some of the other reviews here, I've never had bad service, food, or experiences at JuRin. It can get pretty crowded on weekend nights, so I can see how some people could feel rushed during busier times -- especially with the door area filled with people waiting on you to just finish up and leave so they can take your table. I typically go in right as dinner hours start and it's still pretty empty. I've also celebrated birthday, anniversaries, and other more random events here. No matter the occasion, the staff has always been incredibly friendly, and I always find something great on the sashimi, sushi, or hibachi menus. The decor is a little dated, but it's never really bothered me. I think of JuRin like visiting my grandparents' house -- sure, it's a little dusty and rough around the edges -- but grandma can cook. Until grandma learns to cook hibachi, I guess I'll keep coming. read more

My uncle took us there on a Sunday. They open at 5pm but we were already there at 4:50pm. They kindly let us in and we sat at the sushi bar. 6 of us had the chef's choice sushi bar menu (mystery menu). I grew-up eating traditional Japanese food so I wasn't worried. We had beautiful small dishes made just for the 6 of us: raw octopus, squid, fatty tuna (toro), deep fried fatty tuna, all sorts of sashimi, sea urchin (uni)..sashimi salad. Presentation was great so was the quality of food. A big bottle of premium sake (720ml not on the regular sake menu) was opened for us as well. We were all so stuffed and had to call it quits after 7 dishes and dessert. Our bill with tax and 25% tip was less than $60 per person. Very small/tight restaurant that has about 6-8 hibachi grills, 6 seating sushi bar, and about 10 regular tables. The place was packed by 6pm (they opened at 5pm on Sunday). I would suggest you get there right before they open so you don't have to wait too long. Don't judge the restaurant by it's looks outside/inside. The quality of sushi/sashimi beats most fancy, overpriced Japanese restaurant. Don't sit at the sushi bar if you plan to order from the menu. read more

I visit this place quite frequently and I have to say it never changes. I love getting the sushi from here, although I have yet to try the hibachi. My favorite roll I always order when coming is the Hana Flower roll. It always comes nicely presented and looks pretty to eat. They are decently busy and I would definitely recommend a reservation for the weekends though if you have a large party. but coming in by myself i have no trouble getting a seat. They are fast and efficient when bringing food to your table. I would recommend this place to everyone even if your not the biggest fan of fish, at least give this place a try. read more

I have been a frequent diner at Shakou since it's opening, but looking for another option for sushi, someone recommended Jurin. Upon first notice, we were a little concerned as it is located in a strip mall, but hey, the location does not always matter. When we entered, the place was packed and I could not help noticing that it's very similar to Benihanas which I have not been to in over 15 years. While trying to dine with my fiancee, I was getting faintly annoyed at the constant birthday singing and slapping of spatulas on the hibachi grills. While this concept is good for families with small children and those looking for less expensive sushi, this is not really my thing. I have been to Jurin about 5 times in the last several years. Each time has been a very good dining experience. We have had several family birthday parties at the entertainment tables and while I prefer not to dine at those tables, the food,service and show were good. My 7 year old daughter has been there 3 times and each time the wait staff almost fall over each other trying to provide extra special service for her !! (I don't understand the one review that had a problem with the staff and their child) We have only sampled the sushi at Jurin, so it would not be fair to try to make any comparison with any of the other local sushi restaurants. Unceremoniously kicked out at the end of our meal after I paid the bill, on a Tuesday night! I can tolerate the mistake of two screwed up orders, which were begrudgingly corrected at the end, but the meter ran out for our party of 9 sitting there trying to finish our drinks and enjoy the evening (total time 1 hour and 15 minutes). Wait staff strongly pressured us to finish and get out they had a larger party to seat. "We'd love you to sit here all night, but you can't" Well, you've just lost a customer. read more

Make sure you make reservations If you want to sit where the chefs cook right in front of you. The sushi was really good and decently priced- avg $7-$10 a roll for 8 pcs. I got the crunchy spicy tuna, Godzilla roll, and I can't remember the third roll but it was definitely fulfilling that I ended up eating the rest for lunch the next day. The one thing that was a bit annoying is that when we were seated, we weren't given any menus or asked what drinks we wanted until 10-15 min later. It was understandable considering they were really busy, but we were really hungry. The food took about 40 min to be brought to us- there are only 3 hibachi chefs. But if you order sushi, that only took around 10-15 min. The staff is really nice, but they should consider hiring another server and bus boy. The environment wasn't that great, but people come there for the food and it was delicious. I want to try the JuRin in South Elgin though because it seems like it's a nicer restaurant. read more

My husband had never been to a hibachi restaurant so thought this would be a fun night out with friends. Went on a Saturday night a couple weeks ago. First impression was terrible. They had boxes of cups and supplies inside the front doorway. The restaurant is dark and outdated, which isn't a huge deal but it just looked kind of dirty and sketchy. The food was fine and the guy who brought us our drinks was really nice and outgoing but the hibachi chef was BORING. No personality and didn't do any of the traditional hibachi tricks. What a huge disappointment. Will not be back. read more

If you like gobs of butter & oil and being rushed out of your seats after half an hour, this place is for you. Always been our go to for birthdays, but gone way way way downhill, off the charts downhill. Birthday tonight, made reservations over a week ago for 5:00, tepon. No "show" at all, rushed us through our meal, and literally kicked us out of our seats at 5:40...moving us & our drinks to a table to make room for another party that had 5:30 reservations...just what????? Decided to try this place out with some friends. I've never had Hibachi before and I really enjoy sushi, so this looked it would be awesome! The environment is dimly lit but not romantic. The tables are ok. I would suggest when dining to get hibachi, much better seating. I ordered a few rolls because I'm a sushi head . Everywhere I go, I order at least 1 shrimp tempura. I was really disappointed that this roll was my least favorite. However, their Dragon Roll, Sandy, and Cancun specialty rolls are AWESOME! So much flavor and bodied. The presentation of these rolls are gorgeous too. The hibachi rice with shrimp and chicken was bomb too. Definitely a hole in the wall place. Absolutely loved Ju Rin! The sushi was great and came in pretty large portions, which I wasn't expecting. My friend and I ordered four rolls thinking we'd be able to eat them no prob, but we had to take a lot home with us (which is fine by me). Prices were pretty reasonable too. I'm used to Swordfish prices (a sushi place on Randall Rd in Batavia) which are definitely more expensive and there isn't as much variety. I really recommend the Crunchy California roll; it was my favorite of the four rolls that we got. The other three were the Godzilla roll, the Tom roll (which was a close 2nd), and the classic Philadelphia roll of course. But what I loved most about Ju Rin was the service. You walk in to the sushi chef welcoming you from behind the curtain where he's working, and then all the wait staff make sure you're enjoying your meal. At the end they're absolutely precious and tell everyone "See you tomorrow!". Warmed my heart a little bit and made me consider actually going back tomorrow! Needless to say, this will definitely be where I go to get my sushi fix out in the burbs. read more

I am craving sushi and its lent...so heck why not search on yelp for the local Sushi joint near work. I am going to disagree with the average yelp rating for this place. I don't quite get it. Maybe I was majorly put off by the cardboard across the 3 windows in the front. I kept thinking has this place closed down, been in a recent shooting, or has there been an earthquake that shattered their windows?!? The interior was just as grimy. Don't get me wrong...I love little hole in the wall restaurants with delicious food...that's what's so great about the city of Chicago. But this is Geneva, a well-to-do suburb and this restaurant has a very Japanese name and it felt nothing like Zen. The service was good but I do not think my hispanic server spoke much English. When I mentioned that my maki roll did not have one of the ingredients listed, he quickly got the host. He never really even spoke to me...just handed me the menu. The sushi was average. Good sushi, low prices. Not too many options for rolls but they are all very good. Their hibachi is the best I've ever had as well. Super flavorful, everything is cooked perfectly and prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Good service too, I would recommend getting their hibachi scallops- they are to die for. We have been dining here at lunchtime for countless years, we love it. We were celebrating two birthdays and made reservations for 15 on a Sunday (January 8th) dinner due to schedules. Never again! The "manager" was ridiculous and the service was horrendous, we will never dine at this location while he is working. Also not the first time we have had issues with this specific person. A few people in our party was running late so we were forced to order for them. After we ordered we had to ask repeatedly for water and our drinks. We made it known that we had two celebrating birthdays. A couple ordered sides of noodles that we were charged $20 for but only 1 person was served them and the others were told no they can't get them. We didn't receive everything that we ordered and paid for. They forced half our party to leave while the other few at another table was still eating since they were served 30 minutes after us. They didn't offer the Birthday Certificates as usual either. Truly dissatisfied in the service and I hope the owner realizes that a single person is ruining his business. read more

Best sushi in Kane county, and I'd venture to say beyond as well. Sudo really knows his stuff, and always has the freshest and best tasting fish available. This restaurant beats all sushi restaurants I've had in the city as well. Hibachi is always a fantastic choice too, and you really can't top their fried rice. I recommend doing the steak/shrimp with garlic and egg combo if you choose to do hibachi. The highlight of this restaurant is the smoked salmon sushi. Simply incredible. I know Jurin is a favorite of many, but I think it depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. There were many happy families with small children sitting around the grill watching the show. This restaurant is for them. My husband and I were the unhappy couple seated at the next table over, trying to enjoy some sushi and grownup conversation. This restaurant was not for us. The sushi was not good--the fish was not well cut and didn't taste especially fresh. The atmosphere was not like your typical sushi restaurant--more like Chuck E. Cheese's, complete with screaming children. The service was very friendly and fast, but the atmosphere is loud, dated, and starting to get pretty worn. I then asked for the owner's info and he told me that he was in Japan. I informed him that I can afford a call to Japan. Jose then said he will no be back for a year. This is average sushi. Small place. Humorous waiter. Small and messy maki. Fast service. Got a bad soft shell crab (by bad, I mean smelled not fresh--at all). In contrast, their sashimi (tunas and salmon) was very fresh. I noticed they do have toro. Feels neighbor-hoody which I like. Seems to have a loyal following. In the hour-1/2 we were there, we witnessed 4 birthday songs performed by the staff. The first was cute, but each of the other 3 reiterated how invasive they are in context to dinner. Overall, an average experience. Prices are a tad below what you'd expect. Maybe that's not a good thing. If it was my neighborhood, I'd likely return, but wouldn't call myself a regular. read more

This place is great... The rolls are fresh.. the service is SPECTACULAR.. and the atmosphere is just so comfortable and happy. When my husband and I visited last week, there were 3 birthdays.. normally I cannot stand these types of loud crowds when I'm on a date.. but it was so cute! The ENTIRE staff came out, including the cooks in the back, to sing Happy Birthday.. in Japanese! =) I'm not really sure how long we were waiting for our food, but I'm pretty sure it was about 10 minutes.. when the Manager [not our server] came with our food, she apologized like crazy! I told her it wasn't a problem at all and she just kept smiling and asked if there was anything else she could get us. The sushi chef even came out to ask us if our food was okay.. which of course it was. I sadly cannot remember what we ordered, except for the salmon skin roll [sakekawa] and a river eel roll. This is my go to place for sushi. The food is always excellent and fresh. I prefer the Geneva location but they have a very nice location in South Elgin as well. The South Elgin has a conveyor where you can sample different kinds of sushi. Great place to go if you are a sushi fan. read more

Besides the price, I'd say this place would be a great place to bring kids. That aside, I think that it's more of a date-night/ special occasion type of thing. First time here last night with friends...a group of four. We sat at the hibachi grill table. There was another group at the table with us, they had five people in their party and that filled the whole table. So I would say no more then nine people at a grill unless you want to be uncomfortable. The hibachi experience was fun! The chefs are pretty comical and are all about giving you a show. They make trains with steam and even cho cho noises out of onions, and at the end fling little pieces of shrimp at you while you try and catch it in your mouth. I swear when we were there, there were at least five birthdays celebrated so they were constantly clapping and singing happy birthday to customers in English AND Japanese....it was actually fun though because you can also get into it and start clapping and saying "iey iey iey" (haha something like that) Food is amazing and the sushi rolls were pretty great too.
