Why can't we give half stars yet? This place is a solid 4.5. The venue is rather small and the grits were way too creamy for me but besides that I really enjoyed it. The food was great. My daughter and I went to Just Spoons Cafe for lunch for the first time. The people were friendly and I liked the slogan that "we are all cousins" when we dine there. : ) The manager was amazing. He greeted us at the beginning and informed us that it is a one-hour experience, but promised that the food comes quickly. And it did! We observed that the place was being run very efficiently with even the manager helping out from time to time. I had grits with cheese and fried catfish and scrambled eggs. Overall it was a delicious meal. The grits were hot, the catfish was very hot, but the scrambled eggs were just warm and parts were cool. My daughter enjoyed all of her meal. The biscuit and croissant we got at the beginning of the meal were phenomenal! When we were ready to pay the bill, our waitress read out each charge we incurred on her little hand-held billing device, which we thought was very nice. She then informed us that a 20% charge was added to our bill, and went on to explain that that is for all the staff, not just her. She said that I will have an opportunity to give her even more "tip" on the next screen as she held the device in her hand waiting for me to select an additional tip for her. I told her that I felt very pressured into giving her more money (with her standing over me watching). She still stood there showing me the screen where I am now prompted to give additional tip of 18% and HIGHER on my bill that was $110 of which 20% was already taken out as a surcharge. I felt pressured and uncomfortable. I am used to restaurants automatically charging a high gratuity for large parties, but not for two people sitting on stools (no table). I passed the machine to my daughter who unhesitatingly selected No Tip. The 20% we already paid is enough; and they may continue to call it what they may. The stuffed salmon & grits had a really uncared for taste. We spoke with our server (Meme) who was great) she spoke with the front house manager (JOE) who stated, I understand but my hands are tied." The stuffed salmon bowl was UNTOUCHED!!!!!! Unfortunately they were not able to accommodate us with another option. That was HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING..... I recommended to Joe that he should probably have his staff cook that dish for him so that he could be made aware of the taste...... I'm a huge fan of black owned establishments and JUST SPOONS is one of them. Food comes out pretty fast and it's very well seasoned. The prices are alittle high for me BUT I do understand the business. Thankfully the portions make sense so in essence the price doesn't entirely upset me lol. Our waitress Kea was very helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. She explained how the banana bread pudding was coming out and I was sold. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. I love to support black business, but I need black business to earn my support. Ok... let's start, it's 25$ to make a reservation. The business location moved and I called on our way to confirm the address. The woman that answered told me to Google the address. I explained that we were en route and asked her to verbally tell me and she said she didn't know the address. We were greeted at the door by armed security (for brunch ). We had a reservation so that cut our wait time to 20 minutes as opposed to 1 hr or more. The restaurant is HOT! We asked multiple people if the a/c was broken and they said no, that is the temperature inside (so don't wear anything warm and bring a fan). They seat you and let you know you have ONE HOUR ONLY to eat, pay and leave. We were fine eating and leaving because it was so hot inside! Our server was lovely, their thing is to address everyone as "cousin", at first I thought it was cute, but then it became overkill. The food was good. We had: Two orders of Vanilla French toast with fried chicken tenders Shrimp, catfish and grits Fried chicken tenders with biscuit and eggs. The chicken was flavorful and the grits were creamy and delicious. I ordered a mimosa and that was a total disappointment. I think they waved the bottle of prosecco over the orange juice because they surely didn't put any in the drink. I paid 17$ for a small glass of orange juice. For 4 people, entrees only and 1 "mimosa" our total bill was 175$ (minus the 25$ reservation fee). They automatically add 20% gratuity. The bathroom was disgusting. read more

Visited Just Spoons for lunch after reading about it online. The decor is very 1920's, very dark and cozy. We were greeted at the door and shown to our table and given menus. I selected the chicken sandwich and my partner selected the whole fish. I was warned that the chicken sandwich is spicy, but I like a little heat so I said that was fine. While we were waiting, the waitress brought us a complimentary honey butter, croissant and a honey butter biscuit. My partner liked the croissant so much he ordered another one. The music was very loud l, especially considering the size of the restaurant, but was told they were unable to adjust the volume. After a while, the food came out and the presentation was very nice. I took a bite of my sandwich and they are not joking about the heat. It was so hot spice wise, I could not even eat two bites. I also finished my drink very quickly and it was not refilled, so I sat there with a burning mouth for a long time until I got a refill. My partner enjoyed the fish and sadly, I just sat there and watched him eat. I must say, the potato wedges are delicious. Towards the end of the meal, I went to the restroom and the floor inside and in the hallway were so slippery I almost slipped 3 times, so I let the waitress know. Gratuity is included in the bill and the waitress told us multiple times that they split tips with everyone and extra is appreciated. The bill was $146 after tax, tip, and extra tip, pretty pricey for lunch, in my opinion, but YOLO! I did take my sandwich home and rinsed it off and reheated it in the airfryer. Let's get into the drinks : Brunch punch is a must have. So delicious, presentation 10 out of 10, and perfect balance of flavors. I had fried lobster, home fries and eggs.
