We both had the southern breakfast fried catfish. I chose mine with cheese grits and my wife had home fries. The food was ok, it reminded me of MLK restaurant in liberty city. There was really nothing that stood out and when compared to the son's restaurant it was sort of a downgrade. We have been going to Spoons for a while, at least 15 years. This is Southern-style Black cooking at its best. Yes, that includes heavy gravies, large portions, and probably lots of not too healthy, yet delicious meals. But they are always served with great hospitality. Today's visit for take-out lunch was near closing time (1:40 p.m.). And we were curtly informed that rice and vegetables are no longer offered, just grits and fries. There are no more lunch specials, just regular prices. And they were out of grits. We didn't mind the absence of the grits, because we don't like grits anyway and "smothered" works best with rice or mashed potatoes. (It seems to me that rice is the cheaper and easier side dish to make.) We expressed our disappointment and accepted the fries and chose biscuits instead of toast. The lady did warm up as I insisted on chatting her up. When we got home and dived into our smothered pork and smothered chicken, we were greeted with a very salty gravy (more salty than usual). Looking to tame that saltiness with a fluffy biscuit, we discovered that we didn't have any; they were missing (something we look forward to with the grape jelly). I never did understand the accompaniments with the meals. Everything seems to come with eggs and toast or a biscuit. (I usually end up putting away my scrambled eggs for the next day's breakfast.) I love the liver and onions, salmon patties, smothered anything, homemade pancakes and biscuits, and fried catfish. I wish Yelp would add 1/2 stars, because this should be a 3.5 star rating. While we understand that restaurants have had to pare services and food, it seems like some of the best parts have been trimmed at Spoon's. read more

Had a strong taste for fish and grits, did a quick google search and find this gem. I called in my order when I arrived there was a line to pick up and the dining areas was full which was a good first sign for me. I ordered catfish and grits with eggs and toast although all I wanted was the fish and grits. The fish was fried to perfection nice crispy and well seasoned. My only gripe is the o my have one slice of fish with my order, I didn't want the eggs or toast. The young lady was very nice and pleasant getting everyone in and out. Believe it or not, I'm not a go to person for soul food, being I'm in the health and wellness field. But I am a staunch advocate for moderation and nutritional/physical fitness balance because life is too short not to eat some fried pieces of fish with buttery eggs and grits once every blue moon ---extra burpees for me later, of course. Lol. I won't belabor the menu here, but they are a classic basic soul food restaurant staple. They serve breakfast and lunch for sure on weekdays....I'm not sure about dinner and weekends, you'd have to call for hours. I've always come back to this place when other area soul food restaurants fail sadly to produce. I'd bet a lot of other folks feel that way, too. They are also known for the cakes, baked by a very popular local cake baker.....this awesome person would squeeze my neck if I called him/her out.....the slices are huge and the cakes are amazingly moist and perfect....they don't sit for long at all. The breakfast here was so darn good! The reviews that have given this place 5 stars are 100% accurate. First off, the inside of the restaurant is very spacious and not cramped like a some other places I've been to. My husband and I were greeted immediately and seated within seconds of walking into the establishment, in fact, I think we were allowed to seat ourselves. Our server, a young guy, I can't remember his name, but he is probably one of the best servers I've ever come in contact with. He was pleasant, not pushy, attentive, but not overly attentive. His personality was bubbly and kind, long story short, the world needs more people like him. The food was great. Cooked to order, hot when we received it and savory. We had enough food for 4 people. Called in a takeout order for a nice Sunday morning treat after I tidy up my car at the car wash that's across the street. The phone rang for a while, but when answered, my order was promptly taken by a pleasant woman. My order was ready as promised when I arrived. Food presentation was appealing, the grilled fish & shrimp breakfast was very tasty with generous portions. So I didn't realize that I didn't take a picture of my food until I was biting into the last piece of my fried fish. It was really good by the way. Food: I got the fried catfish breakfast. The fish was delicious. I asked for it to be fried hard and although it wasn't fried as hard as I would have liked, it was still good. The eggs were fine; I mean they're eggs. The grits, I was not a fan of. Every since I've had ikrave grits, I don't like grits made with water and these were just bland. Customer Service: The reason for the low rating. Our waitress was not up to par. I am not sure if she is new and still in training but she needs a little more training. And if this is the case, they should not assign her to big tables. It was seven of us. For one our cups were empty for far too long. It got to the point where Jasmine, the waitress we were hoping for, was assisting. On two occasions she came over to assists us with our re-fills and checking on to-go orders for us. Despite writing our orders down and repeating it back to us three times, on her own accord; not ours, our order was still missing items at which point we didn't even request anymore. One of the young ladies cheese was not melted into the grits. She asked the waitress to put her food in the microwave to melt the cheese and was told that the grits would melt because of how hot they were. For one the grits were not that hot to do that and two it took her asking the manager to out it in the microwave to get it done. Mixing the cheese into grits did not do anything. The cheese sat there in clumps. It took about 20 minutes to get a to go plate for one of the other young ladies at the table. I'm sure you get my drift by now. The customer service could have been way better. Restaurant: The restaurant itself was very nice. It had your typical "hole in the wall" feel to it which I love! That's when you know the food is going to be good. It reminds me of MLK Restaurant in Miami before it moved to its new location.
