The food is very authentically German. Like my grandparents made!! Sooooo good. The wait staff was awesome. The atmosphere was good, nice booths by the bar and a separate more quiet area in back. The bar looks good. I spoke to the bartender, he was very nice and friendly. We went around 4:30 on a Sunday so it was pretty quiet. Looks like a really fun neighborhood bar. Pull tabs, some electronic games, darts,pinball but only a few at the front so if you're in the back you might not hear the noise. Also saw a sign for karaoke on Thursday! The service here was slow. The onion rings were good and my Reuben burger was massive and tasty. My boyfriend ordered a burger too and asked for a medium-done burger and it was well done like a hockey puck. He mentioned something to the waitress after he ate half of it. He said he was so hungry so he ate some. I then tried a bite because I thought he was just being high-maintenance and I felt really bad about what he got served. It was awful. We would not come back. Our server came right over and took our orders for drinks and appetizer. She was very friendly and attentive to our kids drinks and meals which help us all enjoy our time there. The music was pretty loud but added to the environment. Our food came out hot and my sons mini burgers where cooked perfectly. The Sauerkraut was very good that came with my sausage platter and the cabbage was very good. The sausage was fine ver bland in taste but the rest made up for it. Used to love this place but the last two visits have been rough. On our most recent trip, a brand new cook working by himself. We were warned by the waitress, but I thought "how bad could it be?" since we were only going to order a bratwurst and a French dip. We should have left at the first warning. Well over an hour wait and then three trips to the kitchen to get things right. Pretty pathetic for an early Saturday evening. I have been part of my job and part of myself a world traveler and my passion for food and being a humble amateur Chef fortuned to enjoy many different restaurants during my trips, besides being an Italian/German. First time at Bierstube and let me tell you it is very nice. Great atmosphere, nice bar and great food. Wonderful service. We tried Winer Schnitzel Plate and the Schwein Haxe. Now, in America we call Winer Schnitzel which is made out of pork. In Austria Wiener Schnitzel is made out of beef. Wiener means Viennese. In Germany the pork Schnitzel is a Schnitzel. Schnitzel itself is the way to prepare the food, the meat, could be pork, beef or chicken and then breaded and fried. In Austria they fry it in Germany they fry in butter. Only a couple of suggestions if someone from Bierstube read this. The bread crumbs should be extra fine, thus it makes the Schnitzel lighter. The Schweinhaxe was good but needs some improvement. First needs to be cooked with the skin, though the skin is not eaten. Thus, stays juicy. The taste was good but needed more cooking. I would recommend 2 to 3 hours at 350 in a beer gravy sauce that should be filter and serve with the Haxe. I recommend the first 2 hours covered in aluminum foil. The service was superb. Crummy they have low reviews! I had an impromptu lunch with my parents here today. Bierstube chain have a rep of great food. They delivered at the Oakdale location! We had jalapeño poppers, bravarian pretzels and stube steak bites. My dad had a wimpy burger with waffle fries. Food came out hot and delicious. The stube bites were amazing! Steak bites cooked to prefer glazed in like a teriyaki/horseradish sauce with fried onions. Omg. Heavenly. All beers n tap are authentic German. We had Hefeweizen. Served in a chilly mug! I remember when there was only one Bierstube in Hastings. Larry and Hilde, the original owners, were wonderful. Over 25 years ago they opened a location in Oakdale which was much closer than Hastings for me. I looked forward to a meal and a beer at the Bierstube in Oakdale, but often they were packed and you would have to wait for a table or a place to sit at the bar. Since then, the quality has slowly faded, prices have crept up, and the crowds have disappeared. I am not sure what they are doing with the money, but sure aren't putting it back into the bar (I am not counting replacing the dim filament bulbs with $1 LED bulbs, which is one improvement.) Let me share some observations from a recent visit. Since the 20 ounce Porterhouse was on special, so I thought I would try it. Not sure how much it had to cook down, but I find it hard to see how it could have weighed 20 ounces at one point. At best, a mediocre steak. Another person at the table ordered onion rings. I tried one. I have reheated frozen onion rings purchased at Walmart in the oven that were more flavorful. Certainly the quality and quantity come no where near justifying their $8.50 price tag. And here is the kicker that got me to write this review, when I went to pay I was informed that there was a 3.9% surcharge for using a credit card. If I knew that up front, I would have stopped for cash, better yet, I will skip the visit until they turn their act around. If not for the fond memories of the founders, I would have given 1 star. read more

First time here and had a very nice time. We had the Reuben egg rolls and split the weiner schnitzel (definitely big enough for two). We wandered in on a Friday night expecting a bit of a wait. However after 15 minutes we our drink order was taken, 10 minutes later we got our drinks and were informed it was and hour and a half wait for ANY TYPE of food. We had our one year old and said "sorry, he can't wait that long we'll just take our tab" $16 for a rail drink and a short tap beer. Stopped in today to have a sandwich and a beer about 7:00 pm, unfortunately when we walked in we noticed the music that was playing overhead was so darn loud , you could not even hear yourself think. Employees must have had it cranked up since it was not busy at all , yet no one came to greet us. I get it. Hole in the wall bar - bad service and bad food is sort of a bit expected. But, we've visited three times and just won't waste our money any more. The service is terrible each time, the food is terrible each time. Yesterday, we ate and my husband's food didn't come out until we were all done with our meals (the server said the chef forgot about it). We didn't complain, but expected it to be taken off our check (it was the $10 chicken breast special) as standard for service in the area. Didn't happen. There's a smoking area on their small patio out front, and it drifts into the restaurant. Again - I'm sure some folks love the dive bar feel, but if it were accompanied with dive bar prices, we'd be more on board. We paid as much as we would at Tamarack Tap Room - which is down the road a mile or two and is so much better for around the same prices - its not even comparable. Please go there! read more

This place is a total mixed bag... I have come here and greatly enjoyed the experience, but I have come here other times and left honestly wondering what I was thinking. The other evening is what this review will be based on, as this was kind of my final straw when it comes to here... I walked in and spent almost 15 full minutes sitting at a table right next to the bar. A waitress was on the patio having a cigarette when I walked in and sat out loudly talking, yelling, joking, and swearing up a storm with a very drunk guy that was sitting at the end of the bar. Even after coming in the only acknowledgement I got for sitting down was her letting me know that she would "be there soon." Fine, I moved up to the bar. The bartender now actually offered me a drink immediately. I got my staple Vodka Tonic and waited for my brother and his partner to arrive before considering that I would like some food. The menu was placed in front of me and the bartender scurried away. No heads up on specials, or if there was anything good. I spent the entire cocktail debating on something that I wanted, and after two separate check ins from the bartender asking me if I was ready and me saying no, there was no suggestion made on his part. He stood there staring at me for a minute, and then basically walked away after SIGHING. Like, sorry I don't know what food I want to buy and pay for in which you would collect a tip on?! To end it all, I ended up paying for the one drink and leaving. The service here is ridiculously awful, and unless you know what you want, don't plan on eating or drinking anything. read more

This is a great hometown bar & grill. They have been opened since 1991 and the decor is still from the 90's. They have good food I love the asparagus Plate -Asparagus, mushroom Sauteed onions, American and swiss cheese melted on top with ham. YUM! I didn't like this place the first time I came here. I never thought I would be here again but there I was, standing in the doorway, holding my ears as "Ride a cowboy" is blaring. I didn't want to enter but I did. My friend had a certificate to use up so we ventured in, ordered some buffalo wings, some bread/sausage "thing" for lack of a better word, and a corona for me. I thought alcohol might diminish the annoying noise the amateur one man band was playing. The waitresses, both times I have visited, have been friendly enough. The chicken wings were OK but barely luke warm so that was not good. In the menu, they say the blue cheese dressing and celery are free but we ended up paying for the blue cheese dressing separately...Really??? But the menu says..... and NO restaurant charges you for the condiment that is SUPPOSED to come with your entree.....Not worth the dollar battle so I let it slide. The bread with the equivalent of one hillshire farm smoked sausage grilled was not worth more than a few dollars....Ughh I would not order that again...Oh yeah, thats right, hopefully i wont ever be ordering ANYTHING from here because I don't ever want to come here again. I don't go here as much as I'd like to because it's in a strip mall right next to Garibaldi's that I love. I remember them having daily specials. Once it was some kind of large meatball with a cream sauce. It needed and onion or something, it was bland and didn't need to be. The Friday fish fry was okay. Our daughter's first Birthday is a couple of weeks away. We have planned a party for her and my father isn't able to make it up. So he came up this past weekend to celebrate his Granddaughter's first birthday. He was staying in Woodbury, so we chose the Bierstube because of the proximity of it to the hotel. Alyssa & I have been here about four times before, eating the All-You-Can-Eat Friday Night Fish Fry half of those times. It is located in a strip mall right off of 694 on 10th Street in Oakdale. Pretty easy to find. Because of it being in a strip mall, there is plenty of parking available. Walking into the place, you are greeted by a pull tab booth immediately. It's positioned so if there is a line waiting to buy pull tabs, you can't walk right in. You'll have to meander around a big table, avoid the video games, and swing back around to the other side of the pull tab booth, just so you can find a damn seat. Stupid placement of that booth. There is booth seating along one side of the restaurant and the bar is on the other side. In the way back is a little seating area with a few tables and booths. We chose a table back there. The table had menus under the condiment set up they have, along with a drink & specials table tent. I was looking into what they had for drinks when our server stopped by asking us what we wanted to drink. My Dad asked for a Bud 55, but the server said she wasn't sure if they offered that choice. I said it was on the drink list and pointed to it. She said she was new and wasn't familiar with everything yet. I went with a mug of Bierstube Red. Alyssa stuck with water as did my step-mom. She came back letting my Dad know they didn't have Bud 55 anymore. He asked for a Miller 64. She took our drink tent to see if that was a choice listed. I knew it wasn't, and told my Dad if he was going down that route to get a Michelob Ultra Light, which I knew they had. He took my advice and went with it. When she came back with everyones drink, we placed our order for food. In all, 3 AYCE Friday Night Fish Fry's & A Ruben(Step-Mom). The Fish Fry comes standard with Beer Battered Cod, French Fries, Coleslaw, & Garlic buttered hogie bun. While waiting & conversing, I take in the place. The wall are adorned with memories of Minnesota sports teams of yore. Homer Hankies. 1998 Vikings. Was that a Kevin Garnett autograph? Nothing Lynx, though. They also had a fall theme, too. Huge pumpkins out for guessing the weight of 'em. Plenty of TVs. When our food came, our Fish Fry was served in a basket. Everything kinda stuffed in there. Well, everything but the coleslaw. It didn't come. We had to ask our server where it was. She said she forgot about it. The basket was deep but had a small, narrow opening on top. Hard to eat outta that thing. The Cod was thick & flaky. Tough to eat with your hands, but with the basket opening so narrow, the fork was tough to use as well. The Fries were crinkle cut Ore'Ida kind. Soggy because of being at the bottom of that deep basket with the Fish steaming heat onto 'em. Crappy, soggy fries. Bletch. The coleslaw, when it came, was served in a soup cup. It was dry coleslaw with a squirt of coleslaw dressing on top. The dressing has the perfect amount of tang to it. The slaw itself is crunchy & fresh. The tartar sauce is great. It has red pimientos mixed into it. The lemon wedge was the perfect size. Huge & with lots of squeeze for three pieces of Cod. The Cod was good, bordering on great. Big meaty pieces with a nice crunch to the shell. The Beer Batter is almost perfect. The pieces of Cod they use is so flaky, that once your bite into your piece, you must use a fork for the rest of the fillet. The hogie bun is unnecessary unless you wanted to make a Fish sandwich outta your supper. Half way through our meal, our server asked us about more Fish. We ordered 4 more pieces and Alyssa asked for a plate. She couldn't stand eating out of that basket anymore. Our reorder took roughly 5 minutes. They were brought in one of those baskets with more lemon & tartar sauce. The reorder pieces were just as full, flavorful, & flaky as the first. The fish is spot on here. However, it stops short there & is the reason for the two star rating. The AYCE Friday Night Fish Fry costs $12.99. For that price point, I don't want to be eating out of a basket. Put that dinner on a plate! Server was new & forgetful. She never cleared any empty plates or baskets off our table and they just ended up piling up in the middle. The French Fries, ugh. Hogie Bun doesn't go well with this dinner. Texas toast just might. And that pull tab booth. We couldn't leave without negotiating the line waiting to buy some. Again, we had to go this round about way just to exit. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!! Also, if you find yourself drunk, they have a BAC video game you could blow into just to see how drunk you are. A place I used to love, seems to be heading down the tubes. While they serve great bar food, you will find better service and prices almost everywhere. They used to have a killer happy hour, even on Fridays, which is no longer the case. They also used to have fantastic servers, that would ask you if you needed another beer, or if you were ready for your check, again no longer the case. Both of these are noted by the fact that we were one of about 10 people in there at 11:00 on a Friday. Manager on duty was unfriendly and not welcoming at all. Our waitress was great. The $16.99 meal of corn beef , cabbage and potatoes, minus carrots was lukewarm and smothered in bottled gray. Yuk ! Typically, a boiled dinner is served without gravy. My daughter's steak was grisly and tough. We have eaten better steaks at Applebee's. The coleslaw dressing was bitter tasting. The floors were dirty,tables too. I saw the cook leave grill area and then go to sink where I could see dirty dishes stacked up- not sure why he did this? Was here on Sunday a month ago for the Game, first and last time I will eat there. Beer was ice cold, great view of the game but food was horrid. Knocked the wind out of my sails about what I liked about the place. We had cheese curds which we were trying our hardest to find any cheese, and my the sandwich is something that looks like it came from a gas station, one slice of cheap deli meat and a kraft single. They didn't have the decency to try and make the recipe correctly instead they used a processed chicken patty and passed it off as Wiener Schnitzel. very disappointing. The gravy served with it was loaded with ginger and too overpowering. Ginger is a nice root/seasoning however it doesn't not go into a Hunter sauce. My husband and I had dinner here last night. There was no greeting when we entered the restaurant and we had to seat ourselves. The waitress was friendly but did not bring us silverware with our meal. The booth was dirty and the menus were greasy and full of food. I ordered the deluxe grilled cheese and it was the worst sandwich I had ever had. It was soggy and the bread was disintegrating.
