This is absolutely the most hyped, most disappointing, most not-worth-it place ever!! We came here for Christmas dinner and was told they only had a pre fix menu on that day. That was fine but they should have told us when we made the reservation. Anyway we decided to give it a try. First of all the service was slow, not sure if it was just our table or the waiters were all busy. We didn't even get the complimentary bread until I asked after 2 courses. And the waiter pretended to be surprised when I asked, he was like "do you want bread?" Duh, did you ask all other tables the same question? Now about the food. First course was lobster bisque, tasted like the $5 lobster bisque you'd get from Safeway. Second course was sushi, tasted worse than sushi from any random supermarket. A ton of sticky stale rice and very little tuna wrapped poorly in a seaweed role and topped with thousand island ish salad dressing, absolute crime! Third course was fillet mignon and fresh catch fish. Poor presentation, the plate looked messy, and there was also a lot of poached bok choi. Excuse me, are you so cheap? Moreover bok choi doesn't go with the meat at all!! The fillet mignon was ok, but the fish was over cooked and dry. Fourth course was dessert, a small cream sandwich with 2 tiny pieces of macaron shells, this was the only thing that tasted good in the whole meal. Last shocker, this disastrous dinner was $109 per person before tax and tips! Complete rip off! I would not pay more than 20 given the quality of food. My husband and I were celebrating a special anniversary. Our 20th date-a-versary. He suggested that we really go out and celebrate. A fancy meal in fancy clothes at a fancy place. I hopped on Yelp and poked around but a little birdie on my shoulder chirped "Ko!" So off I went to make a reservation. The woman on the phone was so polite. I told her it was our anniversary and that I wanted to be there in time for the sunset and then dinner. She suggested times that were helpful in securing our reservation so we wouldn't have to rush down from town. She reminded me that Ko offers the best Kama'aina on island along with a beautiful setting at the Fairmont Kea Lani. I was so excited! Parking was a breeze as they offer free valet when you dine at Ko. The Fairmont.... it's stunning! The decor, the view, the slight breeze.. We headed down to the beach to find the sun setting. The walk down was full of beautiful flowers and plants of every color and size. We were greeted with by warm friendly staff who showed us to (I think) the best seat in the house. The ambiance of Ko was relaxing, welcoming and pure awesome. Our server Sarah was so super friendly and helpful! She asked us what we like, offered ideas and her favorites which was helpful. We started off with THE most incredible drinks! Ever had a Calamansi mojito? Don't even think about it, just get yourself one! I don't even really like alcohol... but this drink is not to be missed. Food. (sigh) So yum! Everything was awesome. We got Ahi On the Rock You Sear it to start and it was so fun to cook it ourselves. The salts and the meat cut was perfectly matched. I got the lemongrass coconut broth with the fish of the day (Ahi? Whatever it was: ONO!) The bread/cracker platter, rice--it was all tasty. My husband said "This is the best food I've had on island to date." And he EATS.. so ... that should say something. T We wrapped up the meal with dessert and they even wrote "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate on the plate. It was a platter of different tasty sweets and... I ate way too much. After all of that, a little tray of ginger candies was delivered to cleanse the palate. And this was the start of my new ginger obsession. Seriously, they went above and beyond to make our experience awesome. I've been there one other time since then (with a group of 20 women!!) and they were the same way. Very overpriced mediocre food and questionable service! Condescending hostess too. The best part of the meal was the free bread and dip! The free bread and dip stood out the most amongst the other dishes we actually had to pay for. There was taro bread, spinach chips and another bread with seaweed. The dips were unique: lavender cream, edamame hummus and Korean hot pepper paste. We ordered everything to share (thank God we did) including lavender honey macadamia nut fried shrimp ($21 USD), Kobe beef poke ($26 USD) seared scallop udon ($42 USD) and roasted coconut curry chicken breast ($39 USD). The shrimp was good and crunchy but nothing special and I didn't taste the lavender at all. The Kobe beef poke was such a let down! The name is so misleading because it wasn't poke at all. It was literally just stir fry cubed beef in a mini pot! I'm pretty sure poke is supposed to mean raw! The scallops were meaty and fresh but we only got 3 pieces and the udon was too sweet. Now for the chicken breast.... my fiancé felt it was too dry so he told our waiter about it and he quickly became very defensive and said "I don't know! I'll talk to my manager"... something so simple you have to discuss with your manager?? Anyway his manager comes along and offers to whip up a new piece of chicken for us. Little did we know he actually meant JUST the piece of chicken. He re did the chicken for us and served it alone on a small white plate. How unprofessional is that? Usually restaurants would re do the whole dish for you not just the ingredient you weren't happy with. So weird... the manager also never came back to check up on us like what managers usually would do! Neither did our waiter. We felt our waiter was dodging us after we complained about the chicken. Eventually my fiancé realized the chicken that was served the second time wasn't what we ordered from the menu. The redone chicken seemed to be just plain grilled chicken. We asked our waiter and he again said he doesn't know he has to ask his manager. His manager came back reluctantly and hesitantly told us that he didn't give us a roasted curry chicken breast like we ordered but rather just gave us a piece of grilled chicken because that's supposed to be less dry. We felt totalllly cheated at this point! Why didn't they ask us if it was okay to swap the chicken instead of just swapping and hoping we wouldn't notice!? When it came time to pay, they of course charged us for the curry chicken that we didn't have so we asked to speak to the manager again. Instead of coming out to apologize, he just hid in the back and told our waiter to take that item off the menu for us. This guy does NOT know how to be manager. We had a great overall experience here and I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone staying at the Fairmont or a surrounding resort. We made an 8pm reservation through Open Table for a Friday night and were seated promptly along the garden wall. There are no ocean views, but the ambiance is nice and tranquil. Our server was Hannah - she was very sweet, attentive, informative and friendly. She gave us great recommendations for dessert, which I'll get to shortly! We asked if there was any particular place to be for nightlife, and she told us that the bartender was at the hotel lounge this evening making specialty cocktails that he won a contest for, and I'm glad we checked him out because it was an awesome experience to chat with him and learn about his two cocktails! After ordering, we were received a beautifully presented bread plate (check out my photo): sesame rice cake, whole grain bread and taro-stuffed rolls with 3 dipping sauces: edamame and avocado spread (AMAZING!), butter (delicious! I forget what flavoring it had), and a sweet and spicy Asian sauce (amazing, and so good mixed with the edamame and avocado spread!) We started with the Lumpia Filipino Spring Rolls. My husband is Filipino and his grandmother is known for her spring rolls, and these did not disappoint in comparison. They were delicious and served piping hot! There were 5 fresh catches, and I chose the Mong Chong, Kea Lani Garden Herb style preparation. It was pretty good- I actually found the fish to be a little bland, albeit fresh and light. I had the Mong Chong at a different restaurant earlier in the week and it was tastier there. However, maybe it was because of the simple flavoring of the preparation I chose. The mashed potatoes it came with were creamy and delicious. My husband got a beef tenderloin special, which was tastey and cooked perfectly to medium rare. Now the best part - dessert. There was a special - whiskey ice cream with a Coca Cola sauce drizzled over top with bread pudding. We just wanted the ice cream, so we got one scoop plus one scoop of Bananas Foster ice cream. These two were the BEST ice cream flavors I've ever had! The whiskey ice cream was so unique and had just the right amount of whiskey! The bananas foster was so incredible - it wasn't just vanilla-looking ice cream with a banana flavor. It had chunks of bananas foster throughout and was delectable. I wish I took a picture but didn't! We also got the creme brûlée - Hannah recommended several desserts but this wasn't one of them. I had just been craving it. Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. Other reviews cited this too, which I didn't read before ordering. The dish was too deep and so left a lot of custard with little glaze, and the flavor was very bland. It lacked sweetness and vanilla bean- needed more. Overall, I hope we get to come back here! We decided to have an early girls' night and check out Ko's happy hour, which is 4:00-6:00. We're Maui locals but don't dine out at the hotel restaurants very often, usually because of price lol. Happy to report that Ko's happy hour prices are reasonable. :) I had a yummy mai tai which was nice and fruity but I could still taste thr alcohol. One friend got the "Upcountry Buck" which I didn't personally care for since I don't like ginger. And another got the lava flow, which was really good but we didn't taste a hint of alcohol! We decided to sharer the following pupus... Oishi Sushi - Just your typical sushi roll, nothing special. But we are a group that eats a LOT of fish and sushi. Crispy Calamari - We couldn't stop eating this! Kept popping them left and right. Korean Style Spicy Chicken - I've eaten a lot of Korean chicken and I'd say this one was just okay. Not bad but not the best I've had. Stir Fried Peppered Shrimp - Nicely cooked shrimp with a yummy Maui onion sauce. Kalua Pork Flatbread - My favorite of the night! ALMOST lives up to Flatbread's "Mopsy" pizza (check it out if you haven't yet). Kobe Beef Poke - Cooked medium raw. Two of my friends didn't like seeing the "red" of the meat. I wish the meat was a little more tender because some pieces were hard to chew. Overall we had a good time with nice ambiance. The rest of the diners seemed like hotel guests, which is expected. Wish we got to be seated by the pool to get a nice breeze because it was a little hot where we were sitting. The instrumental guitar live music made up for it. Headed to Ko for a special treat business meeting lunch with a few associates. We got there before the lunch rush and got an amazing table overlooking the pool. Our server, Ross, was super helpful and friendly. There were lots of great choices on the menu but I settled on the mac nut crusted fish and a lemongrass cocktail. The fish was cooked perfectly and there was some ginger on top that really put it over the edge of being fantastic. The flavors were excellent! My cocktail was also very good. We had a reservation for 7 pm and arrived on time but the hostess mentioned they were sorry due to being short-staffed and backed up it would be a bit of a wait, 10 min later we got seated. This was a bit of a weird start but from then on everything was fantastic. Our waitress Christina was amazing! She went exceptionally above and beyond. The food and drink options were all wonderful and tasty however I highly recommend the Oishi sushi, lavender honey crispy shrimp, and the coconut gelato malasada for dessert. Brado! We came here to see our good friend Brado Mamalias. If you luv great music, this is the place to hang out, have a drink or dinner and listen to the great sounds of Brado. We stayed and had drinks while listening to Brado play. We watched the meals go by and talked with a couple of customers while we were there. We made reservations to come back and have a meal, but the day did not pan out for us due to our newborn. But, the menu and the food looked great! Most fine dining places give you expensive itsy bitsy food on fancy dishes. My boyfriend and I thought it was a typical overpriced itsy bitsy dishes so we ordered a lot of food. The appetizers were bigger than normal portions and our entree... Oh my probably triple of what any fine dining gives you. Everything tasted absolutely amazing. Since we live in Oahu we received Kaimaana discount! Buy 1 appetizer, get another appetizer free. Buy 1 entree, get the other entree free. 25% off alcohol. I believe our original bill was supposed be $200 and we ended up paying $137 with gratuity. All you locals better make use of that Kaimaana discount! (Another reason we ordered sooo much food). My husband and I were celebrating our Anniversary and decided to go Ko. We have been to Ko once before and was impressed, so we decided to go again after 2 years. We were seating immediately and had great seats to watch the sunset. They brought orchid Lei for the both of us as they knew that we were celebrating a special occasion. Ross was our server and he was very attentive. After going over the fish and specials of the day, he took our order. We ordered for appetizers the ahi on the rocks and oishi sushi. They both were awesome and they also have shiso, daikon and ginger to accompany the dishes which was awesome!!! For dinner my husband got the ginger steamed fish and I order the special of the day which was a seafood trio which consisted of fish of the day, shrimp and scallops. I informed him that I was allergic to shrimp and asked if I could just get the fish and scallops and he said that Ko takes food allergies very seriously and makes sure that there is no cross contamination etc. He also asked what type of allergy it was and I told him anaphylactic and he said ok, he'll definitely speak with the kitchen. They dropped bread at our table prior to our appetizers which consisted of a furikake 9 grain with a rice puff cracker and taro rolls. It came with a edamame hummus, kochijan dip as well as a honey butter. Let me tell u, the edamame hummus was out of this world!!! I think I may crave it soon! When the appetizers came out the server who dropped our food made sure to inform us that it was not contaminated with shrimp and the same with our main dishes. I was so impressed that they were more than accommodating when it came to my allergy. All the food was outstanding. Also what was awesome is that they had the Kamaaina special of buy one appetizer get one free and buy on main dish get one free. Please be wary that when you opt for this special, 18% gratuity is added to the tab but we didn't mind as we still had a great meal and great service. Definitely will be back. Located in the Fairmont hotel , kinda hidden away, just ask the front desk if your not familiar with the hotel bc you won't find it . Ambiance : indoor- outdoor , but no ocean view ; modern and casual; dark unless near the entrance or bar area, which can make it more romantic . Service : our waitress was very friendly and attentive . Everything came out in a timely manner . Food: plantation themed- so it's a mix of Asian and Portuguese I would say . Everything we ordered we loved . For apps we had the lavender honey macadamia shrimp , which my wife loved , and the Ahi on a rock which is sashimi grade tuna in which you self sear to your liking ( I recommend a very quick sear bc the quality of the tuna is fantastic ) and can dip into an orange ginger miso sauce . For entrees we had the lobster tempura which is battered perfectly ( not overly done and heavy) and the special which was a large piece of snapper over a semi creamy lobster broth. I've been somewhat averse to dining in hotel restaurants ( this one is in the Kei Alani) however I am starting to change my mind. Spacious, inviting outdoor restaurant near the adult pool. Very friendly and professional service ( thank you Drew). Food quality and prep exceeded our expectations. Nice choice of wines. Full bar with cocktails, etc. Menu with wide variety of Asian dishes ( some Japanese, some Chines, some Korean). Even a page of healthy dining options ( I threw this page out). The gave my wife a welcome lei and a fantastic free dessert as it was her bday). An overall superior dining choice. Free valet or self parking. Very impressive meal. As soon as the 1st bite hits, your in another world!! Modern day Asian twist with Hawaiian goodness!! The Breads, Wow is quite simplest way to describe. My favorite the sweet rolls with taro root which gives it the purple hue. So pretty in sight and taste. Their mixed salad was out of this world and the dressing was their signature vinaigrette with vanilla flavor is best way to describe. Monchong fish was their catch of the day.... Absolutely delectable it was fluffy light such a pleasant taste and chose it to be macadamia crusted. Served with mashed sweet potato and baby bok choi. Lavender honey macadamia nut shrimp, literally can not express what this did to my taste buds served with white rice. Molokini Tini was a rare treat... Ginger taste and so yummy with a kick on all counts. Desert was baked chocolate custard with macadamia nut crust. This looked like two slices of a brownie. My fiancé and I went here for the last night of our Maui trip. The ambience of the restaurant was quite nice, and we felt like the decor was similarly lovely. However, we were both somewhat disappointed with the food. The lobster bisque and spicy tuna roll were both excellent, but the main entrees lacked pizazz and felt somewhat off. The meal was also definitely overpriced; we felt that we had had significantly better food elsewhere on the island for significantly less money. It's possible that we just didn't really vibe with that night's fixed menu, but suffice it to say that we weren't particularly impressed. The service also felt subpar compared to other places we've been to. Bottom line: if you're looking for fine dining, then there are other places on the island that offer better food at comparable (or even lower) prices. read more

Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items and gave excellent wine recommendations. Would prefer more sauce but that's personal preference. Had purple mashed yam on the side. Not too sweet, kind of bland and not my favorite. I like regular yam. The good rating is more for service and atmosphere rather than food. Second time back at restaurant. Had vegan curry and brown rice. Wish someone would make black rice or combine black with brown. I just don't like coarse tasting brown rice. When I cook at home combining black and brown rice, the texture is softer, sweeter and even my kids would eat it as a healthier choice to white. Not the restaurant's fault, just the way brown rice tastes. I loved the curry, so tasty with big chunks of veges and mildly spicy. A bit thick though, like a stew, if you like that consistency. Ko Plantation is the best drink ever! Couldn't describe.. It's sweet, tangy, sour, uplifting, complex, refreshing, and bursting with flavors. Could be the fresh juices like pineapple and sugar cane? Total disappointment after reading the reviews. Complimentary bread was unfortunately the best part of the meal. The lumpia seemed double deep fried and extremely greasy, flavor was not great, definitely not what I'm use to, having many Filipino friends. The macadamia nut crusted Snapper was also a let down, flavor ok but dry and a tiny portion for $45 ( 2 x 2oz).... see pictures. Finally, we were sat early...430pm ish and requested to be out of the sun; I was blinded by the sun setting for 90% of our visit, mentioned it to our waiter Drew and was blown off. 2 stars for the bread. read more

Excellent food and service at Ko. Our server was supremely accommodating and helpful for our diverse group of eaters. All of the various plant based options our server suggested (and even worked with us to create) were delectable. My nephew's king crab crusted fish looked amazing and we even found something tasty for my gluten intolerant niece. Fantastic wine list too. read more
