OMG is all I can say... I'm the pickiest of pickiest eaters EVER!!! So seriously, I'm a tough critic here. Kudos to this Chef, he has made so memorizing and unique dishes that are hard to describe. As soon as the 1st bite hits, your in another world!! Modern day Asian twist with Hawaiian goodness!! The Breads, Wow is quite simplest way to describe. My favorite the sweet rolls with taro root which gives it the purple hue. So pretty in sight and taste. Their mixed salad was out of this world and the dressing was their signature vinaigrette with vanilla flavor is best way to describe. Monchong fish was their catch of the day.... Absolutely delectable it was fluffy light such a pleasant taste and chose it to be macadamia crusted. Served with mashed sweet potato and baby bok choi. Lavender honey macadamia nut shrimp, literally can not express what this did to my taste buds served with white rice. Molokini Tini was a rare treat... Ginger taste and so yummy with a kick on all counts. Desert was baked chocolate custard with macadamia nut crust. This looked like two slices of a brownie. We have dined with Ko before, and really enjoyed it. This time, we just weren't as impressed. For a fine dining price point, we expect a little better. The food was just ok. Nothing was really hot, which was the real problem. The flavors were good, but the food fell flat because it seemed perhaps it had been sitting. When we first were seated we mentioned to our server it was our daughter's birthday, and we chatted a bit about it. When it was time for dessert we were going to skip it, but said since we were celebrating a birthday we probably should order dessert. No candle. No writing on the plate. And the cake was just ok. I recognize this is not a huge deal, but little touches go a long way in hospitality, and make the difference when we are choosing where to return to dine again. read more

Our experience at Ko was fantastic. My husband and I went here for the first night of our honeymoon and it was the best decision. The service, food, and ambiance were above and beyond what we expected. We made a reservation and the hostess, Sylvia, sat us immediately with a beautiful view of the sunset. Our server, Lo, was incredibly kind and attentive. He was so fast with everything, we never had to ask for anything, not even a water refill. For starters, we had the macadamia nut crusted shrimp and coconut curry soup. These dishes were out of this world. So fresh, hot, and delicious. For mains, my husband and I chose one surf and one turf to share between us. He chose the Korean braised short ribs and I chose the tempura lobster. They were incredible. I can't get over how fresh and hot the dishes were. Lastly, we asked Lo if he would make a recommendation for desert and coffee because everything was so good. He ought us the brined butter banana bar and a latte for my husband. I'm still dreaming about that dessert and the latte was the perfect touch to pair with it. While we were eating, we wanted to grab some quick sunset pictures and the hostess, Sylvia, was kind enough to go over and reorient our table and fix the chairs so we could get the perfect view. When we were first arrived the sun was pretty fierce so we were positioned away from the sun, but we thought that was such a thoughtful touch for her to move it while we snapped some pictures. We had our best meal on Maui here. My miso soup was awesome - I really didn't think you could make miso better, but they did it. My salad was tasty as well - passion fruit vinaigrette FTW. My first time eating here. Service was excellent, people are nice but kind of slow. For start there were a plate of complementary bread with dipping sauces. Generous portion and ok to taste. Bread has purple yam like filling and Green crackers on bread slice. We ordered calamari appetizer. Was good with the dipping sauce, crunchy and decent portion. Seafood stew with small lobster, tomatoes, clam, shrimp and black mussels was tasty. A bit salty because of the green olives but I liked it. A cup of white rice on the side. Was a bit softly cooked. Not the kind of drier rice you get in Chinese restaurant or Japanese. The lamb chop rack came in three separate pieces. Meat was very tender to chew, the best part. Would prefer more sauce but that's personal preference. Had purple mashed yam on the side. Not too sweet, kind of bland and not my favorite. I like regular yam. The good rating is more for service and atmosphere rather than food. Second time back at restaurant. Had vegan curry and brown rice. Wish someone would make black rice or combine black with brown. I just don't like coarse tasting brown rice. When I cook at home combining black and brown rice, the texture is softer, sweeter and even my kids would eat it as a healthier choice to white. Not the restaurant's fault, just the way brown rice tastes. I loved the curry, so tasty with big chunks of veges and mildly spicy. A bit thick though, like a stew, if you like that consistency. Ko Plantation is the best drink ever! Couldn't describe.. It's sweet, tangy, sour, uplifting, complex, refreshing, and bursting with flavors. Could be the fresh juices like pineapple and sugar cane? We REALLY disliked Ko. Food was significantly overpriced and just OK. Ambiance for dinner was terrible. Bad lighting- reminded me of a cafeteria. Diner style appearance - including server's outfits. I'm not sure why this place gets so many good reviews, but I would advise to stay away. read more

I'll have to preface this review by saying that we ordered from Ko via room service. So, from restaurant to door, the dishes lost some of its freshness and were a bit overcooked from being covered too long. With that said, I had the Lobster Tempura ($42) with Spicy-Sesame, Pineapple Sweet Chili Garlic and Grapefruit Soy Sauce. The lobster is Kona slipper lobster tails, which are smaller but sweeter than your average Maine lobster. The batter was more of a beer batter consistency than a light tempura batter. The dipping sauces were very good, with the spicy sesame being my favorite (don't worry, it's not spicy at all). My husband got the Maui Cattle Company New York Strip ($38), seasoned and Grilled with Sauteed Hamakua Ali'i Mushrooms. The strip was tender but suspiciously a little squishy. The sauce was very good. The mushrooms were great. Overall a very nice and convenient dinner option at the Fairmont. Service was impeccable. read more

Literally.. the BEST meal I have ever had in my entire life. First of the our server was incredibly kind. The hospitality of this place is off the charts. It was our anniversary and they gave us a very romantic spot away from all the people with lanterns hanging above us during sunset. And then for dessert they brought us out a complimentary dessert plate custom made for us. Did not even ask or expect it. Anyways, getting ahead of myself. We ordered two appetizers. The BBQ ketchup pork skewers & the macadamia nut crusted shrimp. Out of this world good. Then for dinner we got the rib eye and vegetable stir fry with chicken. Each dish had so many new flavors I've never tasted before and every bite left me with pure joy and happiness. Please stop what you are doing and make a reservation. You will not be disappointed. We arranged prior to the reservation requesting a nice seat and alerting your staff of a birthday for us. We did not have the best experience. The waitress was nice but we felt VERY rushed into ordering and she spoke extremely fast. I mentioned to her that my mother was hard of hearing and she continued to speak super fast and not near her. Our table was nothing special. No flowers or a candle, no table cloths. It felt like a cafeteria. Other tables had flowers but our table did not. We felt rushed into ordering, finally placed our order and the meals came out piled on top of one another and our courses were removed before everyone at our table was done eating. The lobster tempura was terrible and we asked if it was fresh or frozen, the waitress did not know. It tasted frozen and she confirmed that it was. The bread platter was weird too... nothing special and small containers for dipping? No special small spoon? Weird set up. We ordered dessert and the cake for my mom came with a nice birthday and a candle so that was nice! My masala fried ice cream tasted as if the oil was old or rancid. We returned that immediately. The dessert was served with tiny spoons and we ordered ice cream, a cake slice and a piece of pie. No forks given or a check in to see if we were doing Good. No coffee offered at this time It felt very rushed and not genuine service. We asked the server to please slow it down. She did accommodate us by removing the frozen lobster and masala ice cream because these were terrible. There was a huge event going on which made it hard to hear even for someone with hearing aids, like my mom. Unfortunately, We were super disappointed with our experience. If you want expensive cafeteria food with not much ambiance, this is your spot. Sadly, we did not have a great experience communicating w management either. Although we weren't staying at the Fairmont, we had no problem finding free parking since we were eating here which was a plus. Our waiter was EXCEPTIONAL. He wasn't pushy and was extremely friendly and agreeable. The classiest service I've ever had. We ordered the coconut thai dish and the macrobiotic dish. Both were decent and the servings were large! Because i was pregnant, we didn't order any fish but I think that would have been a better thing to order. Our dishes were OK but nothing to write home about. We should have ordered something a little more fun ;) Their ingredients are fresh and the portion sizes are huge! We love Ko!! Ko has an excellent Kama'aina deal with BOGO apps, cocktails, and entrees, but we were gunning for the Happy Hour menu. We started with a Kea Lani Mai Tai, a Bikini Blonde, and the scrumptious bread plate with three tasty dipping sauces - an edamame hummus, a Korean BBQ sauce, and a lavender butter. We tend to devour two servings of this plate each visit. We topped off the yummy goodness with the Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl and the Oishi Sushi. The tuna was like butter - yummy and rich and it seemed to melt in our mouths. It was after we were halfway through our appetizer meal that we found out about the Sunday Night Laulau. Oh, boy! Had we known about the laulau special on Sunday evenings, I would not have eaten a plate of spaghetti marinara for a late lunch. The laulau sounds decadent and incredible, so it is shelved for a different night at some point. Aside from lovely food, a beautiful view, and tasty cocktails, Ko offers something special - a lifestyle menu. My boyfriend cannot eat dairy, so when we dine, we are careful to chose restaurants that offer lifestyle choices for food. They have a menu dedicated to diners with special dietary needs. Ko is perfect for a relaxing meal, and if you like the sunset, you'll have an amazing view from their outdoor dining area. * Note: Another yelper mentioned that residents are seated in bad spots. We have never had that experience. Every visit to the restaurant, we have been treated with respect and have had excellent service, and they know we are residents when we make a reservation, and even when we just take a seat at the bar - possibly by our "not on vacation" demeanor. Restaurants have nothing to gain by mistreating residents, and Ko staff has always treated us nicely. We go to Maui to visit family a couple times a year, this is the only place that is non negotiable for our trip, we will eat here, always. The food is beyond spectacular. I have never been to a place where every single bite of food is perfect, until here. I definitely miss this when I leave, and dream about it until I come back! My daughter, at 15, is the pickiest eater ever, and will eat everything that she sees on the table! The staff is always so wonderful and friendly, and we never fail to ask for Andrew as our server. No experience is complete until you get to meet andrew. He's so passionate about making every detail perfect and your dining experience will be greatly enhanced by his smiling face and warm heart. Oh, and if you're wondering, this trip we had ahi on the rock, calamari, tempura lobster, pasta, and fish special. I give it a solid 4.5 stars, but I cannot select 4.5 so I choose 4! Our first choice was "Mama's fish house" but the prices were so outrageous. Hubby and I wanted to celebrate our 8 year anniversary at a nice restaurant on Maui. We yelped and asked the locals what spot was nice and they mentioned Ko. So I booked Ko a week in advanced and they promised us lei's at arrival with a nice view. I was sold! We arrived at our reservation with no lei's at arrival. I was a bit sad as I was promised and it was our first time in Maui together on our anniversary. We get seated by the nicest host and she hands us the menu with the special's and recommendation. She mentioned that the "lobster tempura entree" was her favorite, and I was sold! Our sweet server's name was Hanna and our bus boy was Roland. Hanna was super exceptional and had a wonderful personality. Roland was super friendly and took our photos at sunset and at our tables. I mentioned to Hannah about the lei situation and she apologized and let us know that they had run out. She reassured us that she can figure something out, she was so sweet about it. Ten minutes later and just in time for sunset, Hannah brings us two beautiful purple lei's just in time for photos! We did the lei exchange which was sentimental for the hubby and I and we got some good shots. Hannah saved the day, thank you!! Ko's background is an asian infusion restaurant mixed with Hawaiian legacy. I love how they include Japanese, Korean, Hawaiian, Polynesian, Philippino, (Portugese plantation) in all of their recipe's. All of our favorite foods in one! We started off with the ooishi roll and it was wonderful! The dip bread dish they bring prior to your meals is amazing! My favorite is their honey, lavender butter with the rice patty. It leaves this amazing taste in your mouth. Something so unique and addicting, making you want more. So amazing. Also, the edomame hummus is lovely too! Hubby ordered the surf and turf special which included 5 oz. maui cattle filet, shrimp and scallop skewer, vegetable stir fry with garlic jasmin rice. He gives it a solid 5! I ordered the tempura lobster with asparagus and sticky rice with 3 amazing sauces. I give it a solid 5! It literally melted in my mouth and it was the best thing I've eaten on the island so far! For dessert, we wanted to try something tart and not so heavy so we ended the night with a key lime coconut graham cracker crust pie. So perfect and amazing. Ended the night with sour ginger candy which cleansed the palette. I would definitely not hesitate on making reservations here. The only con is that they ran out of lei's and didn't mention anything about it and our dessert wasn't comped as some other reviewers in the past mentioned it was for their anniversary. I think everyone should be treated with equal respect on their special celebration whether they are locals or tourists, etc. This was our first time having to pay for an Anniversary dessert ever in our lives, but as I mentioned before, it was all worth it!! Best guest/customer experience. A little too formal with "Excuse my reach Mrs. As I place your plate in front of you" for me. But, it's at a resort so I see the appropriateness. Our server (regret forgetting her name) is simply amazing! Knowledgeable about the menu. Offering suggestions and detailed answers to my questions. First restaurant I didn't have to look or ask for a waiter. Other busboys were prompt in taking away appetizers and bread to make room for our main entrees, with cleaning our table in between. I would suggest the Lilikoi martini. Amazing-not too strong, but the alcohol is there as well as the sweetness. For starters, we tried the oishi Ohana, which comes with: oishi sushi, lumpia, and stir fried sushi. Sushi is exactly like a friend tempura spicy tuna. But so delicious for you sushi lovers! Lumpia was served in a little bowl cut in half pointing upwards. I thought it would be stale or oily, but it tastes just as if it were home cooked! Yummy! Stir fried shrimp with bok Choy. Honestly tastes like Chinese take out that I could've got for $3 in 8th Ave, Brooklyn. Really basic. We also tried the bbq pork skewers with banana ketchup. Not so great. Meat was tough. Didn't even care to finish my skewer. For dinner, we had the lamb chops. Cooked to perfection. Perfect seat with some red inside, tender meat. It came with mashed sweet potatoes. (Purple) I would rather have regular steamed sweet potatoes. The combo didn't go well for me. We also had The Zarzuela. It was a tomato based broth with seafood. The lobster was overcooked but everything else inside was great! Not tough at all. Very generous in clams, mussels, shrimps, tail lobster, squid, and scallops! Overall, service is probably the best I've experience. Food is up to par. Ambiance was peaceful, as you sit poolside with the view of the stars and open seating. Won't feel crammed. Food was ok. I came here for the Monchang. They had it several different ways. We tried the macadamia crusted and the grilled versions. Liked the grilled more, but it was a 4 out of 5 at best. The lobster tempura was ok, not great. We had another noodle dish with various seafood(scallops, shrimp, etc.) and it was mediocre. The scallops were funky, and they remade them. The second time they came out they were fine. Overall the food was so-so, but felt way overpriced for this level of food. The best part was the bread and dips, by far. Would not come back for the food. Decor was ok. We had been told they recently spent 6 million on a remodel, and I don't think it shows. I didn't think the decor was anything to write home about. Would rather have had a better ocean view, like over at the five palms. Prices were high. When all was said and done, we were at about $60-90 per person, and we didn't have much to drink. read more

I brought my best friend who was visiting for a nice dinner for her last night here. From the moment we called to check wait times to the moment we left we were treated like family. First, Sylvia greeted us on the phone and in person. She was kind, professional, and made is feel so welcome right away. Luiz was our server and was so attentive and knowledgeable. He made some great recommendations recommendations. Ronaldo also was very attentive and was great to meet several members of the staff. Ko is the fanciest restaurant on the Fairmont Kea Lani property. Being that we were celebrating our honeymoon, we made it a 'must' to visit. The hostesses were very pleasant and seated up quickly. It was raining outside, and they put us on the very outer edge of the restaurant. Even though we put it on the reservation, there was no celebration or mention of our honeymoon. They gave us green leis for some reason, but they didn't say that was for anything specific. I normally aren't big on this type of stuff, but it's hard to read about all the wonderful things have experienced without feeling left out. Our server was a pure salesman, and very much came off that way; his accent sounded like Michael Rooker which was weird (RIP Merle & Yondo). He was trying hard to upsell and made the mistake of forgetting to 'read' his audience; for instance, we weren't downing a bottle of wine no matter where we were or when it was. After he realized this, we were mostly left alone including when it came time to pay the bill. The menu here tends to be overly fancy and with small dishes. Based on what I saw, the dishes were not overly impressive. Bread plate was diverse but only good. I was hoping to try their pork lumpia (the traditional kind), but only chicken/mushroom was available. The wrappers for the lumpia were great but the insides were dry. For my main I wanted to try the locally sourced steak they had. I requested it cooked rare, but it was only cooked medium. Oh course our waiter was nowhere to be found so I could send it back. It was thoroughly unimpressive--buyer beware with "locally sourced" dishes--but I ate it because I was hungry. It only came with a few purple sweet potatoes which dry and oddly acidic. My wife got a healthy dish that she liked, but was overpriced for what it was. We finished the meal with a banana bread cake, which despite our server's suggestion was only okay. This was one of our most expensive meals of the trip, and was by far our most disappointing. If you don't mind walking/driving, head to the Four seasons down the road for much better restaurant options. Otherwise still to the other big restaurant or the cocktail lounge off the lobby. Response to Management Comment: Saying you specialize in "plantation era" food is no excuse for it being overpriced and mediocre--at that point nobody cares if it is authentic or not. I was lucky to try a number of other restaurants in Hawaii specializing in plantation food which were all better than yours. I am very well traveled when to comes to food of all kinds (these weren't my first lumpia) as my record on Yelp shows. Your response isn't becoming of a Fairmont resort; I'm removing another star here. read more

Service was good at the bar and quick. We went at 5 pm on a Friday with no reservation and able to get in right away. WORST HAPPY HOUR ON MAUI! Actually an unhappy hour...starting with no service for about 10 minutes...then their happy hour menu had higher prices than the one posted online. No one asked if we wanted another drink...or food...and it's not busy season. The 3 bartenders just didn't pay us any attention. Finally begged for our check...and they charged $14 for a well gin and soda with lime (we asked for lemon). And that was "happy hour" price! Bartender finally brought our bill, we paid cash, and when he made change and it was wrong by $2. OMG...an unhappy hour...and the worst on Maui (we live here so we know). We will NOT be back! Very very very impressed with our meal yesterday evening. We had a group of 7 in our dinner party and found Ko to be a really gem. I had never heard of it and juts did a search on Yelp. I made the reservation and we were sat outside. The service was impeccable as was the atmosphere in the surrounding area where we were seated. The menu is a true Hawaiian menu and doesn't differ too may h which I commend them for doing. The appetizers were incredible. The Kobe need poke was outstanding as was the the poke. This was actually a lot of fun as we were given a hot rock sitting on salt to make it the temp one wanted. The drinks were fabulous as was the wine come dinner. Even the bread with the many different types of butter etc was wonderful. I ordered the lobster and again...outstanding! I strongly urge people to maybe try Ko over the other resorts as it was far vested than anything I've had in both Kihei or Wailea. read more

Ko was a really great experience. We sat on the best table in the restaurant with the view of the sunset. Watching the pink sunset couldn't have gotten any better. Our waitress was Sarah. Sarah knew what she was talking about and she recommended us with very delicious choices. For the appetizers, we had the Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl, Oishi Sushi, Seared Ahi on the Rock, and Korean Crispy Chicken. Each of the appetizers were very flavorful. As dinner came along, we had the Ribeye Steak, Ono Pulehu Chicken, and Grilled Lamb Chops. The ribeye was really good! It was juicy and soft. The Grilled Lambs were on point as well. Our water glasses were never empty and we never left thirsty. For dessert, we had the Lumpia. The banana inside was soft and the shell was crunchy - which we all liked. I plan on coming back here.. For appetizers, we got the Vegetable Tempura and Tiger Prawns. The tempura was surprisingly different and we liked it better than the prawns for its originality. For entrees, we tried the Zarzuela, Grilled Makai Catch, Ko Paella and Paniolo Bone In Rib-Eye Steak. The Zarzuela was a stew version of the Paella. So if you get one, skip the other. The steak was so chewy that it was hard to eat and cut. I haven't had that kind of texture anywhere else so I would pass on it. Plating and presentation was very upscale. Complementary Bread was very good and has great variety in breads and dipping sauces in a very pleasing setup. This is probably the most expensive restaurant we encountered in Hawaii. If you're a value eater, you should probably skip since the venue / food / service doesn't justify the price unless you have a dining credit or come during happy hour. For that price, I would expect better service or perks but none came. Its probably because the waiter had to cover a wide area so getting his attention was a bit hard. read more

Our first night in Maui our flight was delayed and we missed our dinner reservations here, so we decided to pop in for lunch today instead! The location is gorgeous and it's very chic inside, but not too dressy. The first thing I noticed was their extensive cocktail list, each cocktail with a Hawaiian flare added to it, yum! Twists on the Moscow mule, daqueris, and mojitos all of which were quite tasty. And all of which came out looking like a picture. I had the chop chop sesame chicken salad with avocado, very light despite the large portion size! It maybe could use a little kick - soy, spice, peanut sauce...just something but either way it was very good. The stir fry noodles with chicken was phenomenal, and the pulled pork flatbread and mahi mahi wrap, though a bit messy, were both great choices as well. We did try the vanilla creme brûlée as well, so creamy and flavorful, very classic. They do have more adventurous dessert options as well! We loved our lunch and will probably be back for lunch again this trip! The service was spot on and the view is beautiful overlooking the pool :) read more

My wife & I have dined at many restaurants in Maui and KO is one of the best. The (Monchong) catch of the day was creatively integrated into a delicious special packed with fresh local ingredients and the Lau-Lau was really delicious. The staff was very warm and shared much ohana with us as well as all of the guests. We are looking forward to returning to try a few other entrees as they all look to be as delicious as the ones that we had. read more

This place came highly recommended by our concierge as well as a few locals we asked. And it did not disappoint! The ambiance was a perfect mix of sexiness and class. The menu was Hawaiian, plantation fusion. The food was beyond amazing. We had the Ahi tuna app and we got two versions of the Snapper (macadamia nut crust and miso). Both were delicious! Both fish entrees, the app and two beers came to $145 which was reasonable, IMO. They also gave us a wonderful dessert (something banana bready) for our anniversary, which apparently blew my banana bread out of the water! We were able to get reservations (recommended) but did not need (Tuesday night). We would 110% recommend this place to anyone who attends Maui and wants a beautifully unique and upscale seafood dinner. read more

Oh and the taro rolls are to die for [ the best I have ever had in my life] This is a really nice place to take your other half out or possibly a business partner. The food here is just extremely delicious and the derive was so on point. Water filled drinks refilled the whole nine. Interesting menu and fantastic service. Growing up in Hawaii I've been accustomed to Asian fusion. Ko's menu does Asian fusion in a unique way. I came here on a date and we had such a tough time deciding what to order becAuse there wee so many interesting items on the menu...in every category, too! What we ordered: Appetizer- lavender honey, macadamia nut shrimp. This was amazing. Perfectly cooked shrimp, soft and not too chewy. The breading was light and not oily whatsoever. The lavender honey glAze was great, sweet with just a hint of lavender. Entrees- Mongchong special. Mongchong fish wrapped with a lobster tail and topped with tempura onions and scallops, with a side of Bok choy and Kim chi rice. To die for. The fish was so tender and the sauce it came with was something akin to a sweet chili aioli. That mixed so well with the fish and balanced the spice of the Kim chi rice. The scallops and lobster tail were icing on the cake. Tempura Lobster served with asparagus and white rice. Four generously sized lobster tails, lightly battered. The lobster was good on its own, but was made even better when dipped in one of the three side sauces it comes with: Shiracha aioli, mango sweet chili and grapefruit soy sauce. Desert- lilikoi cheesecake. Tangy cheesecake perfection. It had an edible yellow glitter exterior..need I say more? *side note- they have a menu for those with various dietary lifestyles, including vegan, raw, gluten free, macrobiotic. A solid restaurant with excellent fish preparations. I had the grilled opa with a fried prawn and Hokkaido scallop with the lobster cream sauce. Very very good. Also had the plumpjack Chardonnay to go with it. Also very good. One thing about service. Drew was our waiter and possibly one of the best we have had on the island. Very down to earth and steered us in the right direction with the multi faceted menu. The menu itself is a fusion of different Asian styles including Filipino, Japanese etc. Don't let that dissuade you from going here. The food is definitely solid. I would eat here again. read more
