Probably my worst meal in Hawaii and the worst service. I wouldn't return or recommend. Our server was nice but we waited 20 minutes just to give our order.. we would have walked out but they had brought us a sparkling water the moment we sat down. The food took another 25 minutes and then came out wrong. Lovely ambiance.. I gave them two instead of one, because my wife got the catch of the day and that was excellent but very tiny for the price. The reviews are not wrong.. don't waste your time. Went to the pool to relax and grabbed a couple drinks on my first day in. Ordered the Kea Lani Mai Tai. I would not recommend it. Ordered a second drink Spicy Mango Margarita. I definitely would not call that a margarita but maybe I'm just not use to mixed drinks on the island. As far as beer goes I tried a sample of Bikini Blonde Lager and Pau Hana Pilsner . What a hidden gem! Great spot for a date night with ocean and sunset views!! Food and service was outstanding!!! We had the seafood platter to start, hard to pick a favorite but the salmon, oysters & lobsters were my personal picks. Then we had the beet salad & watermelon salad, great pallet cleansers, refreshing and tasty! Next was the chimichuri steak & fries, miso butterfish, chicken kabob and brussel sprouts. Again everything was great but the steak and fries were my favorite. Then we tried the sorbets and cream pies for dessert. All winners but the chocolate caramel cream pie and coconut lime cream pie didn't last long...lol I highly recommend going before this little restaurant gets too popular to get a table!!! read more

Although the food was decent and the drinks were okay, I give AMA three stars because the service was below average and the other Fairmont restaurants made it look bad by comparison. Our server was kind of inattentive. She didn't check in with our table as much as she should have. In addition, when she brought us our bill, she didn't include the itemized receipt. She only brought over the total owed. We asked for an itemized receipt and came to find that the gratuity was already included in the grand total. It was an extremely large order, so the included gratuity was substantial and tipping twice would have been quite expensive. I'm not sure if our server intentionally omitted the itemized receipt, but it was odd. I also appreciate when the server makes you aware that the gratuity is included. I think it's common courtesy. In addition, the table wasn't very clean when we were seated. As I mentioned before, the other restaurants at the Fairmont (Nick's, Ko, Ciao Cafe) have excellent service and their food is out of this world. I just wouldn't recommend wasting any time at AMA when there's better options nearby. read more

Not many vegetarian options here for poolside or at the restaurant itself. We ordered twice from this place on different days and were very disappointed. Ordered at the restaurant: Taro burger - the bread was a bit stale and chewy and the Krinkle cut fries were not fresh - probably frozen.The side pickle even tasted old. We had to search for our waitress many times, and it took over 10 mins for someone to get or waitress to give us the check. It's a very unorganized area of servers. Other customers were waiting for over 5 mins after they sat down just for water and to order. You're better bet is to order at the pool. Ordered at the pool: We also ordered from the kids menu because of the lack of veggie options, so we asked about the Mac n cheese and the server said it was Kraft! ??? Not what I was looking for or expected at a resort at all! The cost of a Kraft boxed Mac n cheese which is typically $1 at Walmart, was way overly priced on the menu here at the resort. I understand by the manager that parents had asked for Kraft brand for their kids, but parents shouldn't be giving their children cardboard boxed mac n cheese. I always make my own fresh Mac n cheese at home and for my nieces and nephew. It isn't that hard to make! Especially at a resort, the quality of the food should match the star level quality of the resort. So instead we ordered their penne marinara and that was awful as well. Very plain pasta with tomato sauce and their side veggies were uncooked (raw and not steamed enough at all). Very disappointed in the quality and cost of the food at Ama. Their grilled cheese is horrible. I can make it better at home myself. Too buttery and the cheese tasted weird. I would never let my child eat this low quality of food. Overall don't eat here and instead go grab a sandwich or something else from the "shops at wailea" and come back. It's right around the corner and tastes much much better! read more

This pool side restaurant is a diamond in the rough. Surrounded by award winning restaurants like Nicks and Ko, AMA can hold its own! Their dinner menu is full of flavor rich items from sharable, to entrees. I highly recommend the seafood platter that offers a half size of all their RAW bar offerings. My entree, steak frites was cooked to perfection. I also loved that they had gluten free options clearly marked on the menu and catered to my allergies without making me feel like a burden. I suggest going for dinner so you can enjoy a gorgeous view of the ocean/sunset while sipping on a glass of wine or a well crafted cocktail. This is the pool bar's restaurant. Service is good but the whole place is very informal as you could expect. There is a ramp that opens up to the pool, stairs along the back side, or you can actually sit at bar stools that are actually in the pool. I got their special drink in a few pineapple for the hell of it. It was very fruity as expected, but good otherwise and checked that box off my Hawaiian honeymoon. Everything I had here was good, but nothing was great. The Opa wrap contain well grilled Opa, but otherwise was mostly bland lettuce. The poke was not that flavorful with little spices and a weak hot sauce besides sriracha. It sufficed as a quick lunch option, but I was hoping for more after staying at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island. read more

With such a great location poolside and overlooking the ocean, and located on a Fairmont property no less I was hoping for much better than Ama Bar and Grill. Alas, Ama is truly mediocre and extremely, extremely overpriced as well. During our stay we had a couple different sandwiches, burgers, and assorted kid's meals (Kids do eat free at the Fairmont with the purchase of an adult entree...which is fair). However... The quality of the food and service was just meh and indifferent. As I mentioned up top inconsistent with what the Fairmont brand would seem to put out. First off the sandwiches. Chicken, beef. Whatever. $22-24 and they only include a packet of chips? French fries are an uncharge? Really? I get this is the Fairmont and its by the pool, but that price is having a laugh to be honest. At us. I don't remember the Four Seasons (next door) being as expensive, and the quality was excellent. At Ama, you pay $20+ for a sandwich that would be mediocre at Denny's or iHop (but you wouldn't pay that price and feel ripped off). Yes, quality - well, there really wasn't. My fries which I paid an extra $3 for were soggy. The sandwiches had the least amount of chicken or the thinest slice of beef, "over-bunned" and contained the saddest pieces of lettuce, etc. Oh, I ordered an ordinary ice tea. Cost? $7. $7???? Really unbelievable. to add insult to injury, the server was never around to refill it. Kid's food? OK, it was free (*unless you order poolside in which case its not). Biggest injustice - kids macaroni and cheese. It's from Kraft. Yes, Kraft. I just didn't expect that here, and it wasn't even made well out of the $1 box. Sad. Very disappointed. Just to show - or not show you - how disappointed I usually take pictures of my food. I didn't take any at Ama. It was that meh. I should have to illustrate my words. Sorry. Doubt I'll be back. Nice spot to enjoy the view while having some snacks or drinks, as well as the small, but enjoyable, swim up bar. if the server doesn't tell you about the drink specials (they always did), ask! There's usually a beer of the day for $5 and a cocktail. Ahi Sashimi is good and the Molokai Mule is worth getting! If you're like me and trying to avoid some sugar/carbs, ask for the Molokai Mule without simple syrup; you don't need it anyway! I would compare this to the 4 seasons which has a great view of the ocean and more reasonable menu choices. They need to get off Hawaii time and either step up their game on the menu choices. I love the Fairmont and I used to come to this bar on previous vacations and enjoyed the poke bowls... however the last few days when I ordered the spicy poke, it's been disappointing.. it's not spicy at all and covered in way too much mayonnaise to the point that it seems watered down. The raw ahi is served room temperature which seems kind of gross.. the first time it was bad, I figured maybe they were just swamped and it came out like this on accident but today I ordered it again to give it another try... and it was like this again! Next time I'll order something else off the menu. It's just disappointing because I do love the location and the staff are always nice... but someone needs to remake the poke! This bar is poolside, literally! You swim up to bar seats that are situated in the pool, how cool is that?! When you sit, you are presented with local style trail mix and dried mango which was nice. We ordered a couple of drinks and a sampler which had tiger prawns, eggrolls, and Korean fried chicken wings. The pork egg rolls were served with pickled cucumber, carrots, and daikon along with lettuce for wrapping and a sweet chili dipping sauce. These were my favorite on the platter. Great salads and a killed grilled mahi mahi wrap with guacamole in a sun-dried tomato tortilla are delicious. My favorite salad in the Volcano Ahi salad with fresh ahi, greens, tomatoes, vegetable curls, green onion, delicious won ton chips and a sweet sesame vinaigrette with a slight kick. Dining next to the pool in a location with views of the ocean and the Fairmont's luxurious grounds is a great way to spend time in Wailea. Fresh pineapple, orange or guava juice are also available. To top this off is an awesome cocktail menu featuring a "PIYI", (pronounced pie-pie). 151 Rum, creme de cocoa, coconut, POG and pineapple served in an actual pineapple is an excellent choice. read more

Went to AMA for the Wailea restaurant week meal. Here's the break down. Ambience - nice outdoor setting with sunset views Service - nice friendly waitress Food - here we go... Appetizer was a Nalu sushi roll. Tasty but the rice was slightly undercooked. Main Entree was a grilled mahimahi on a taro bun. The fish was salty and the fries served was like Oreida frozen crinkle fries. Dessert was a key lime pie that was too tart. Coffee served "Keoki" style was $19 each. RIP OFF. Didn't finish our food. The food is terrible. My companion had the mahi-mahi steak which was supposed to be pan seared and pink inside. Nope, completely cooked through and was very likely reheated. I had their "special" which was this beef udon soup dish. I suspect they were pushing it because the beef looked like it was about the expire. It was gross and SO EXPENSIVE. So not worth it. The extra star is because the Mai tai was excellent and the bartender was fantastic. This would also be good place for drinks during sunset. You can get a good spot to see the setting sun. read more

We came to AMA Bar & Grill several times during our stay. The food was delicious and the service was great. We've ordered the nachos, the hot dogs, and the burger and all were really good. They also have a separate kitchen in case the guests have any allergies. They were very good to respond to the allergies we told them. Kids under 5 eat free so when I'd order for my daughter, there was more than enough food for her. The restaurant has a nice view so it's nice to sit there. They also have roller shades when things are too hot. Be prepared to see birds and the like walking around the floors looking for crumbs. You can also pre-order and pick up if you'd like. read more

It also had great flavor and came with vegetables and brown rice, which complemented the fish nicely. My only complaint would be the flies and birds. I agree with the other writers that the food was like bar food at double the price $15-$20 for an appetizer. We had a grilled vegetable plate, which is served cold (?) and some drinks and a spring roll plate which was about 5 taquito-style rolls that were over-fried for about $20. We didn't order anything else here during our trip. Luckily, we had this poor food on our first day and then went to Safeway and bought drinks and snacks for our room. There is a mini fridge in the room and they keep it low, but you can pull it out and turn up the coldness on the back of the fridge. The waitress was nice and I felt bad for her. People kept asking us how the food was -both at the table, reception and the valet. I am not sure what we should say? Bad bar food at double the bar price? Maybe triple the price? This is the pool-side cafe. It should be easy to have a quality lunch here - some sandwich items and salads would do it. Maybe the kitchen space is too small? We are not that picky with food, but bad food stands out. Note: my review is for the poolside cafe only. I think a lot of reviews are for the pool swim-up bar, which is in the same place. My wife and I shared the Beach Boy Bento which had soba noodles, fruits, salad and your choice of two fish or chicken selections. We had shrimp and the catch of the day. Meh. It's in the Fairmont Kea Lani resort so it's going to be pricey so not taking that into account for this review. But...... Food was just OK. Nowhere near the quality I would expect for half of the cost. Unfortunately, the service we received sucked. Empty water glasses for more than 10 minutes. Waitress didn't seem to care. Three of us ordered entree's and my youngest ordered chicken tenders. Waitress brought out the entrees first and we had to wait another 10 minutes for the chicken tenders. I mean really? How hard is it to time chicken tenders to fry for 5 minutes so that everything can come out at once? On top of that....if all of the meals are not ready, why bring out the food for 3/4 of the table and leave a 12 year old hanging. For a resort that prides itself on superior customer service, this was a total fail. I would recommend avoiding this restaurant. read more
