Engine started, but cutting out, warning lights flashing: they replaced my battery and then when that wasn't the problem charged a several hundred dollar diagnostic fee on top of the battery and sent us off to get the dealer to fix it with a bill of over $600! read more

Long story short, I wasn't in the shop to actually see the expensive part that he claimed was broken. Several people told me no way that part was broken on a fairly new car with low mileage, but I wasn't in town to see for myself. $800 later, the expensive part was replaced. When I went to pick up, the fast talker at the front desk spent 10 minutes trying to explain why I needed more expensive parts replaced. My car isn't that old and I'm not going back for more (unnecessary??) repairs. read more

We've had 3 cars serviced and body work done at K&S over 7 years. They are top notch. Great group of people to work with-friendly and the get the work done right the first time. Incredibly honest. They always check warranties and recalls and have advised working with the dealer in such cases. One time we couldn't pick up out car until Saturday (when they are closed) and they arranged the pickup during off hours! read more

my car shop in Columbia has been my car shop since i was born, literally. my car guy is like family. so, it's been a challenge to find a shop in Baltimore to come close to my Columbia shop (Benchmark Motors, if you're in the area). K&S is that shop. Dave is awesome. i don't have to know the jargon to be taken seriously and taken care of. top marks for customer service. i awkwardly described noises that i had concerns about, and the shop was able to diagnose the problem efficiently. the shop didn't have a replacement part for my car at the time of my visit; so they were able to effect a temporary fix while the part shipped. and then they made the quick repair in literal minutes on my return visit. i had an oil change done at the same time of my first visit. they have Mobil 1 synthetic, at a reasonable price. i'm used to buying the oil myself- i think K&S charges less than Autozone, or at least comparable. and certainly more convenient than buying the oil beforehand. i mentioned a couple issues with my car that i had observed, but it was obvious the shop gave the car a good once-over, and i really appreciated that. their rates are comparable to Benchmark's, whose were considerably less expensive than dealership and other shops. i confidently recommend K&S! read more

The latest news: they've permanently damaged my cylinder head, which is an expensive part of the car and not worth replacing on a 12 year old vehicle with 160,000 miles on it. A mechanic at K&S broke a bolt off while they were trying to take it out and never bothered to tell me about it. I only discovered the problem after my car started spewing oil all over my engine. This is something that never should have needed to be repaired in the first place and could never have resulted from me simply driving the car. It is definitively the error of some mechanic who majorly screwed up under the hood. Just when I thought this place couldn't get any worse, they manage to surprise me. Don't ever take your car here. I had an unfortunate experience here a few months ago when my car broke down. I asked them to check why the car stalled and let me know what the problem was. It was towed to their garage, and the car was looked at immediately, and I appreciated the prompt service. An hour later I got a call saying it would be a few thousand dollars for the repair, and they included a laundry list of other things they wanted to do in the quote (4 new tires, motor mounts, new wipers, some other random things). I don't know much about cars, but I took inventory on the list they gave me and started doing some price research. It also helps that my father used to be the consumer reports writer for a large metropolitan newspaper in Pennsylvania, he helped me look at the situation objectively and get sound quotes from a number and variety of sources. Just to get my car to work K & S said it would cost me $800. I called around to various other garages and dealers in the area, and everyone else consistently quoted me $250 or less for that exact same repair. I quickly paid ($100) to have my car towed out of K & S and to another local garage to have the repair done. The new garage took the same look over my car and said everything else was fine. When I went to have the car picked up by the tow truck from K & S I was given a bill for $90. It was for "diagnostics and labor." I have had my car hooked up to diagnostic machines before by other garages (here in Baltimore and in PA) and retail stores (Autozone, etc ...), and I had never been charged for that. Nor, had I been told of a diagnostic charge up front. I will never go back to K & S, and I would never recommend anyone else go their either. Thank you for reading! read more

I need to update a review. I would ask fir amir if tou want expert advice. I had had a catalytic converter put on by another company. My engine light cane one and k&s replaced my oxygen senors. My engine light came on after 50 miles. I was lets say pissed because they said i needed to spend another $1700 after just having my car fixed. I went back to other company and they agreed with k&s diagnositic and repalced the catalytic converter for free. read more

I've been taking my cars here for years-first with my Acura-now with my Volvo-its nice to see a women that's been working there forever and Dave is awesome! He is totally honest with me and he only suggests what I REALLY need to get done to my car! Every time I would take my car into the other shop around the corner (that also specializes in imports)-I could never get out of there under a grand!...i won't go any where else! read more

I have had lots of work done here but recently was given a battery that is too big for my car but was not told. I had to find out because the cover to the battery does not fit and it was broken. The headlight assembly was broken and will cost me over $700 to fix. read more

Though the front desk and mechanic staff were very friendly I will NEVER take my car to K&S again. They overcharge and will rip you off. Especially if you are a woman. They charged me $550 to replace 2 tires that were only about $150 each. They told me they were $220. But worse I was in a tricky situation a week later and had to tow my car there. They wanted to charge me $800 to fix it and I was stuck. I had another mechanic come in and take a second look, the owner then turned nasty. The second mechanic got the car running and got it working within and hour with just a little lube. No $300 part, no $500 service fee. Lube and one hour. SO needless to say they are there to take advantage and get your money not to help you. read more

David and team help me keep my 1992 Volvo 740 wagon running. They understand that I just want to keep it going and they only do what needs to be done. For instance, they were able to cut out a rusty section and weld the exhaust system back together instead of making me replace the catalytic converter. My Mom uses K&S too. They remember that we're related and always ask me how she's doing. We've always been pleased. They do beautiful work. They figure out how fix things others have failed to fix, like Mom's leaky sunroof. read more

Ok, so I was referred here by a City Paper Best Of 2 years ago when I first got my car. Initially I was told all the things wrong with my car and the 3K price tag it would take to fix these things. I was also told that because my car had been modified that there was a lot of work they couldn't do and a lot of work that had to be done to make it drivable. Over $300 later and multiple visits and they still don't know what is wrong with my car and suggested multiple minor but costly fixes that don't amount to anything. Every time I've taken it in, I get charged over $150 for diagnostics but no actual work gets done. They even suggested replacing a $60 sensor with a $300 one, when all that was wrong was a fuse was pulled. I have tried them thinking "it might get better" but after taking my car to Heritage, A DEALER, and getting better work for less money and also talking to numerous other garages that have offered me SOLUTIONS, I am never going back to K & S again. I'm not sure how they have stayed in business this long. Either people are really dumb (like I was) or just have money to throw away. I am not dumb any more and never really had the money to just toss at a problem that never goes away. The bottom line, unless you want to waste time, money, be talked down to and never get solutions to seemingly easy problems, DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR TO K&S. If however, all of those things seem like just what you enjoy, by all means, do, you'll deserve the poor service you get. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. These guys are crooks who will take you for everything if they can. I took my new, used car that I had purchased a month earlier from a dealer to have them go over it before a family trip. You'd think the car had just come from the junkyard with the laundry list of repairs they came up with. I was not aware of any front suspension trouble but agreed to have them do one repair-replace the front strut mounts, cost $400. 12 months later my strut mounts are completely shot. Around the same time I took my wife's car in for a check engine light for an evaporative emissions leak. They replaced the Purge Valve, cost $200. Within 7 days the check engine light was back on with the same code, same problem. My last trip to these fiends, I was getting a sporadic service engine light for a hard shift. This time I did some homework on Google. Everyone suggested replacing the Pressure Control Solenoid. So, when I take it to these guys I asked them to check that first. They said the solenoid was fine and suggested flushing the transmission fluid and replacing the transmission pan gasket and filter, cost $400. Against my better judgement and really out of desperation, I told them to go ahead. So, they did the work, cleared the code and within 24 hours the light was back on with a hard shift. Took it to the dealer who replaced the Solenoid and the problem was gone. Now, 12 months later, the gasket they replaced (which was replaced for no reason at all) is leaking fluid all over the place. I took it to a great shop (D&J Auto), just around the corner, who redid all the work K&S had botched for 40% less. The moral of the story: stay far, far away from these scoundrels. read more

I'm baffled by the reviews. As a single lady who knows nothing about cars, they take care of me. I never get the feeling they're trying to sell me services I don't need or anything like that. I was going through a rough time personally and couldn't afford to get some minor things repaired, and they fixed them no charge when I went in to get an oil change. Then they thanked me for running back into the shop to thank them after I noticed. Also, the Big Wheel is hot. Just sayin'. Very nice group of people. read more

I and my dad have taken 3 different cars to K & S since 1989. I have always had great service there. When I lived in Philly and DC I couldn't find mechanics that I trusted and ended up always bringing my car back to K & S. One of the things I appreciate is that they are honest and thorough. When I was a grad student and had to keep a closer eye on expenses I knew what was urgent and what could wait because of K & S. When I was buying a new (used car) they inspected the cars I was interested in and steered me clear of the bad models and even helped me know how to negotiate a better price. After almost 30 years there is no other shop to which I would ever take my car. read more

Had a great couple of experiences with K&S after some unfortunate events with my car. I was in two accidents within a 6 week time frame and K&S not only fixed my problem, but they did it in a timely manner and the customer service was great. I had over 8,000 dollars worth of damage done to my car from my second accident and they repaired everything back to normal quickly and got me back on the road. I called them to check on it as it was in the shop and they told me step by step what was going on and the timeline was right on track. The employees at K&S are great to talk to as well and I am very surprised by these other posts below about horrible service since my experience was fantastic. Go somewhere else, anywhere. Car never ran correctly after their service. Went to pick up the car and it wouldn't make it off the lot, pulled it back into the garage where they worked on it for another hour as said 'it just needed to run a bit'. The car didn't make it to the gas station a few blocks away. When I attempted to negotiate the 2k in charges from 'their recommended' service costs down they offered a discount on future service. Well, I have to say in reading the other reviews, I have a VERY different story to tell. I don't live in the Baltimore area, but was there on business in early December (2014) and experienced 'disabling' car trouble. I drive a Volvo SUV and wanted someone experienced with Volvos. Another shop in Annapolis recommended K&S, which was just 4 miles from downtown Baltimore (easy access - so that's where I went) ... and I have to say I received great service at a reasonable price. They didn't try to upsell me on the repair work and even suggested a 'true' repair versus a part replacement (which would have been three times more expensive). They were friendly, delivered services on time, and even helped with finding a hotel and provided transportation. For having unexpected car troubles on an out-of-town trip, they couldn't have made it much easier for me. They even offered to pick me up the next day to get back to the shop. All in all, I received great service and would recommend K&S! read more

I got into an accident two days ago and had my car towed here because my husband's family used K&S when he was growing up in Baltimore. I was pretty shaken up when I arrived and I know very little about cars, so I had no idea if they'd be able to do anything for my busted up car. When he saw my car, David looked at the tow truck driver and said "are you kidding me?" He completely ignored me, acted like I wasn't there, and when he finally addressed me it was to say "what do you want me to do?" He treated me with utter disdain and made me feel humiliated. I understand that he couldn't do anything for me, but when my husband had told him what happened on the phone he said to bring the car in. I do not understand why he couldn't explain the situation with kindness, compassion or even just respect and professionalism. When I went back today to get the car towed away, he started calling me "sweetie." I think this was his way of trying to make up for yesterday, but the degradation and sexism didn't do much for me. I will say that Rina (I hope I'm spelling her name right) was very kind and helpful, but needless to say I will never go back to this place again. read more

I had one of the worst customer service experiences of my life at this establishment. This shop is supposed to specialize in certain types of vehicles, yet it takes weeks for parts to arrive that have no tracking numbers and the communication is shoddy. The mechanics and front desk personnel are extremely rude. They were actually yelling at us in front of other customers! I strongly suggest you do not give these pompous people business! read more

I had a pretty ok experience with these guys for some body work on my Mitsu. Being non-mechanical and an insurance job, it was a pretty different kettle of fish from the other reviewers on here so far. That said, it was good work as far as my amateur eye can tell. The involved door and molding came back looking good with no 'around the edges' indications that they'd been replaced or otherwise worked on. Additionally, when I did have a concern about some of the rubber molding around the window looking cosmetically a little kinky to me, they went after it with no questions asked even though it was a detail item. They were friendly and communicative, and I see the guy who supervised the work around the neighborhood sometimes and he asks me about the car. read more

Surprised to see poor reviews here -- I've been to K & S several times (once for repairs and twice for maintenance) and have only had good experiences. After my front bumper came almost entirely off, I had my car towed there over a weekend on a friend's recommendation. This was my first big repair on a car and I was nervous a body shop would try to convince me I had to buy a new bumper. To my surprise, they called me first thing in the morning on Monday, said they could put it back on, quoted me a very reasonable price, and then offered a free maintenance check. They called back again before noon and said the bumper was back on and gave me a list of a few maintenance items they could have seen to, but before I even said anything said it was totally fine if I chose not to tend to those items at this time. I really appreciated how they didn't put any pressure on me for additional services. They were incredibly friendly and helpful, not to mention quick and reasonably priced. I'll definitely be using them in the future. read more

I recently moved to Baltimore from Canada with my 2006 Volvo S40 and stumbled upon K&S. I've had my car serviced twice at K&S and they have always been amazing! They broke down all the costs and told me what I could wait on and what needed to be done. They even helped me get my car safety inspected and arranged for me to get a rental car while my repairs were being done. I have taken my car to K&S many times for the same problems. ahhhh it makes me so angry! I just took my car to another shop to have a exhaust install and what do you know the belts they replace need to be replaced again but they stripped the bolt so thats extra labor. And the transmisson gasket they replaced less than a year ago needs to be replaced again! They also replaced the oil gasket on my valve cover and it needs to be replaced as well. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. it seems like a legit shop but it just isn't! read more

Let's start with this: K&S would need to take two steps up to reach vile. My car was overheating, I told them that, my car was overheating. I think that makes it clear. They put in a new battery. My battery was 6 months old. They charged me $400. They explained to me that the problem with my car was the ABS system. Yes that's what they told me. I drove out the door and my car overheated. Interesting. I'm a college student and my dad owns the car and had approved the work so they would not act. My father lives in California and couldn't do much about it so, guess what? We took the car to a dealer and they replaced the water pump and a belt. It works fine. It doesn't overheat. K&S would not return the perfectly good battery they removed. They also informed my that the car needed and additional $1900 of work on a host of other problems. The car runs fine and the only problem it every had was K&S. STAY AWAY FROM K&S. THEY ARE HORRIBLE. THEY ARE LIARS. THEY ARE THIEVES. NO STARS NONE. DON'T GO. DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR THERE. read more

I also can not believe these reviews! We have been using K&S for 15 years. They kept 3 old Volvos alive and in great condition for years. They worked on our Acura and my Toyota Highlander Hybrid. We bought an old Volvo from one of the mechanics for our Au Pairs and he frequently did repairs for free. I have called them while on the road describing a troubling symptom several times and they have told me to come straight in and they fixed it immediately. All of the staff there have been truly caring and accommodating always. Dave, the owner is heavily involved with Hampden charitable causes, most notably, improving childhood education and resources for low income families in the community. I recommend them to all our neighbors regularly and believe they have never pushed unnecessary services on us, on the contrary, they have suggested less pricey options. We have even taken goodie baskets to one of the mechanics because we were not charged for some work he did and wanted to show our appreciation. Bottom line, they have been very good to us for over 15 years and we had tried most repair shops in the area with disappointing results until we found them. read more

Some reviewers are certain these guys are crooks. Personally I can't decide if they are crooks or if they flat out don't know what they are doing. I took my car here for a repair because I was certain"the dealer will charge me an arm and a leg!" After about an hour I received a call from K&S telling me "I'm going to need two things from you. Time and money." I was pretty stunned at such a bold statement, and this was my first red flag, but I figured these guys are experts so I went with it. Three hours and $300 dollars later, K&S diagnosed the problem. Evidently they had to take part of my car apart to find the problem... Seemed pretty excessive for a diagnosis, but what do I know about cars? No matter, this was my second red flag. As if that didn't hurt my wallet enough, they informed me that it would be over $1,000 to fix the problem. Third red flag. Unable to afford it, and also highly skeptical about the pricetag, I declined the repairs. I had spent $300 with absolutely nothing to show for it. Out of curiosity I took my car to the dealer to see what they had to say... Imagine my surprise when they found AND fixed the problem in under an hour at a cost of $87.10. TOTAL. What a tremendous relief, but at the time I really couldn't decide if I was more thrilled about the cost or more furious at K&S for taking me for $300 and trying to take me for a thousand more. A lesson learned for me to just take it to the dealer and be done with it. Again, I can't decide if these guys are crooks or if they don't know what they are doing, but frankly either option is unacceptable. read more
